1 A nd it cometh to pass, when he finisheth to speak unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan hath been bound to the soul of David, and Jonathan loveth him as his own soul.

După ce David a terminat de vorbit cu Saul, sufletul lui Ionatan s-a ataşat de sufletul lui David şi l-a iubit ca pe sine însuşi.

2 A nd Saul taketh him on that day, and hath not permitted him to turn back to the house of his father.

Din acea zi Saul l-a ţinut pe David la el şi nu l-a mai lăsat să se întoarcă acasă.

3 A nd Jonathan maketh -- also David -- a covenant, because he loveth him as his own soul,

Ionatan a încheiat un legământ cu David pentru că îl iubea ca pe sine însuşi.

4 a nd Jonathan strippeth himself of the upper robe which upon him, and giveth it to David, and his long robe, even unto his sword, and unto his bow, and unto his girdle.

El şi-a scos mantaua pe care o purta şi i-a dăruit-o lui David; i-a dat, de asemenea, îmbrăcămintea sa de război şi chiar sabia, arcul şi cingătoarea sa.

5 A nd David goeth out whithersoever Saul doth send him; he acted wisely, and Saul setteth him over the men of war, and it is good in the eyes of all the people, and also in the eyes of the servants of Saul.

Oriunde îl trimitea Saul, David se ducea şi avea izbândă. De aceea Saul l-a pus în fruntea ostaşilor, lucru ce a fost bine văzut de întregul popor şi chiar şi de slujitorii lui Saul.

6 A nd it cometh to pass, in their coming in, in David's returning from smiting the Philistine, that the women come out from all the cities of Israel to sing -- also the dancers -- to meet Saul the king, with tabrets, with joy, and with three-stringed instruments;

În timp ce oştirea se întorcea acasă, după ce David l-a ucis pe filistean, femeile din toate cetăţile lui Israel au ieşit în întâmpinarea regelui Saul. Ele cântau cântece de bucurie şi dansau în sunetul tamburinelor şi al lăutelor.

7 a nd the women answer -- those playing, and say, `Saul hath smitten among his thousands, And David among his myriads.'

Femeile cântau în veselia lor, spunând: „Saul a ucis miile lui, iar David zecile lui de mii.“

8 A nd it is displeasing to Saul exceedingly, and this thing is evil in his eyes, and he saith, `They have given to David myriads, and to me they have given the thousands, and more to him only the kingdom;'

Lui Saul nu i-au plăcut aceste cuvinte şi s-a înfuriat foarte tare, spunând: „I-au dat lui David zecile de mii, iar mie doar miile. Acum nu-i mai lipseşte decât regatul.“

9 a nd Saul is eyeing David from that day and thenceforth.

Începând din acea zi, Saul a început să-l privească cu ochi răi pe David.

10 A nd it cometh to pass, on the morrow, that the spirit of sadness God prospereth over Saul, and he prophesieth in the midst of the house, and David is playing with his hand, as day by day, and the javelin in the hand of Saul,

În ziua următoare, duhul cel rău trimis de Dumnezeu a venit cu putere peste Saul, care profeţea înăuntrul casei sale. David cânta la liră aşa cum făcea în fiecare zi, iar Saul avea în mână o suliţă.

11 a nd Saul casteth the javelin, and saith, `I smite through David, even through the wall;' and David turneth round out of his presence twice.

Saul a aruncat suliţa, gândindu-se: „Îl voi ţintui pe David de zid.“ Însă David s-a ferit de el de două ori.

12 A nd Saul is afraid of the presence of David, for Jehovah hath been with him, and from Saul He hath turned aside;

Lui Saul i-a fost teamă de David pentru că Domnul era cu acesta, iar pe el îl părăsise.

13 a nd Saul turneth him aside from him, and appointeth him to himself head of a thousand, and he goeth out an cometh in, before the people.

De aceea l-a îndepărtat de lângă el şi l-a pus căpetenie peste o mie de oameni. David conducea trupele în războaie

14 A nd David is in all his ways acting wisely, and Jehovah with him,

şi în tot ceea ce făcea avea izbândă pentru că Domnul era cu el.

15 a nd Saul seeth that he is acting very wisely, and is afraid of him,

Saul, văzând că David izbândea întotdeauna, se temea de el,

16 a nd all Israel and Judah love David when he is going out and coming in before them.

însă întreg Israelul şi Iuda îl iubeau pe David pentru că acesta îi conducea în războaie.

17 A nd Saul saith unto David, `Lo, my elder daughter Merab -- her I give to thee for a wife; only, be to me for a son of valour, and fight the battles of Jehovah;' and Saul said, `Let not my hand be on him, but let the hand of the Philistines be upon him.'

Atunci Saul i-a zis lui David: – Îţi voi da de soţie pe Merab, fiica mea cea mare, cu condiţia să mă slujeşti cu vitejie şi să porţi războaiele Domnului. Saul însă se gândea: „Să nu piară lovit de mâna mea, ci de mâna filistenilor.“

18 A nd David saith unto Saul, `Who I? and what my life -- the family of my father in Israel -- that I am son-in-law to the king?'

David i-a răspuns: – Cine sunt eu şi cine este familia mea sau neamul meu în Israel pentru a fi ginerele regelui?

19 A nd it cometh to pass, at the time of the giving of Merab daughter of Saul to David, that she hath been given to Adriel the Meholathite for a wife.

Însă atunci când a sosit timpul ca Merab, fiica lui Saul, să-i fie dată lui David de soţie, ea a fost dată lui Adriel din Mehola. David, ginerele lui Saul

20 A nd Michal daughter of Saul loveth David, and they declare to Saul, and the thing is right in his eyes,

Mihal, o altă fiică a lui Saul, îl iubea pe David. I s-a spus lui Saul acest lucru, fapt care i-a plăcut.

21 a nd Saul saith, `I give her to him, and she is to him for a snare, and the hand of the Philistines is on him;' and Saul saith unto David, `By the second -- thou dost become my son-in-law to-day.'

Atunci Saul şi-a zis: „I-o voi da ca să-i fie o cursă şi astfel mâna filistenilor va fi împotriva lui.“ I-a spus lui David pentru a doua oară: – Astăzi vei fi ginerele meu!

22 A nd Saul commandeth his servants, `Speak unto David gently, saying, Lo, the king hath delighted in thee, and all his servants have loved thee, and now, be son-in-law to the king.'

Apoi le-a zis slujitorilor săi: – Vorbiţi-i lui David în taină şi spuneţi-i: „Regelui îi place de tine şi toţi slujitorii săi te iubesc. Acceptă, aşadar, să fii ginerele regelui.“

23 A nd the servants of Saul speak in the ears of David these words, and David saith, `Is it a light thing in your eyes to be son-in-law to the king -- and I a poor man, and lightly esteemed?'

Slujitorii lui Saul i-au spus aceste cuvinte lui David, iar acesta a răspuns: – Credeţi că este un lucru neînsemnat să fii ginerele regelui? Eu sunt un om sărac şi de puţină însemnătate.

24 A nd the servants of Saul declare to him, saying, `According to these words hath David spoken.'

Când slujitorii i-au spus lui Saul ce răspunsese David,

25 A nd Saul saith, `Thus do ye say to David, There is no delight to the king in dowry, but in a hundred foreskins of the Philistines -- to be avenged on the enemies of the king;' and Saul thought to cause David to fall by the hand of the Philistines.

acesta le-a zis: „Aşa să-i vorbiţi lui David: «Regele nu doreşte alt preţ pentru mireasă, decât o sută de prepuţuri de-ale filistenilor, astfel încât regele să fie răzbunat pe duşmanii lui.»“ Saul însă dorea să-l facă pe David să cadă în mâinile filistenilor.

26 A nd his servants declare to David these words, and the thing is right in the eyes of David, to be son-in-law to the king; and the days have not been full,

Slujitorii lui Saul i-au spus aceste cuvinte lui David, iar lui i-a plăcut ideea de a fi ginerele regelui. Înainte să se împlinească vremea hotărâtă,

27 a nd David riseth and goeth, he and his men, and smiteth among the Philistines two hundred men, and David bringeth in their foreskins, and they set them before the king, to be son-in-law to the king; and Saul giveth to him Michal his daughter for a wife.

David a plecat împreună cu oamenii săi şi a ucis două sute de filisteni. Le-a adus prepuţurile şi le-a dat în număr întreg regelui pentru a putea deveni ginerele lui. Atunci Saul i-a dat-o de soţie pe fiica sa Mihal.

28 A nd Saul seeth and knoweth that Jehovah with David, and Michal daughter of Saul hath loved him,

Când Saul a văzut şi a înţeles că Domnul era cu David şi că Mihal, fiica lui, îl iubea,

29 a nd Saul addeth to be afraid of the presence of David yet; and Saul is an enemy with David all the days.

s-a temut şi mai tare de David şi i-a fost duşman tot restul vieţii sale.

30 A nd the princes of the Philistines come out, and it cometh to pass from the time of their coming out, David hath acted more wisely than any of the servants of Saul, and his name is very precious.

Domnitorii filisteni ieşeau la război şi, ori de câte ori ieşeau, David avea mai multă izbândă decât toţi slujitorii lui Saul, astfel încât numele lui a ajuns foarte preţuit.
