1 A nd it cometh to pass, after the death of Joshua, that the sons of Israel ask at Jehovah, saying, `Who doth go up for us unto the Canaanite, at the commencement, to fight against it?'

După moartea lui Iosua, israeliţii L-au întrebat pe Domnul: – Care dintre noi să pornească primul împotriva canaaniţilor ca să se lupte cu ei?

2 A nd Jehovah saith, `Judah doth go up; lo, I have given the land into his hand.'

– Iuda să pornească, le-a răspuns Domnul. Iată că am dat ţara în mâna lui!

3 A nd Judah saith to Simeon his brother, `Go up with me into my lot, and we fight against the Canaanite -- and I have gone, even I, with thee into thy lot;' and Simeon goeth with him.

Cei din seminţia lui Iuda le-au zis fraţilor lor din seminţia lui Simeon: – Veniţi cu noi pe teritoriul care ne-a fost dat, ca să ne luptăm împotriva canaaniţilor, după care vom merge şi noi cu voi pe teritoriul vostru! Şi simeoniţii s-au dus cu ei.

4 A nd Judah goeth up, and Jehovah giveth the Canaanite and the Perizzite into their hand, and they smite them in Bezek -- ten thousand men;

Astfel, cei din seminţia lui Iuda au pornit la luptă şi Domnul i-a dat pe canaaniţi şi pe periziţi în mâinile lor; au ucis la Bezek zece mii de oameni.

5 a nd they find Adoni-Bezek in Bezek, and fight against him, and smite the Canaanite and the Perizzite.

Acolo l-au găsit pe Adoni-Bezek, s-au luptat împotriva lui şi i-au învins pe canaaniţi şi pe periziţi.

6 A nd Adoni-Bezek fleeth, and they pursue after him, and seize him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes,

Adoni-Bezek a reuşit să scape, dar ei l-au urmărit, l-au prins şi i-au tăiat degetele mari de la mâini şi de la picioare.

7 a nd Adoni-Bezek saith, `Seventy kings -- their thumbs and their great toes cut off -- have been gathering under my table; as I have done so hath God repaid to me;' and they bring him in to Jerusalem, and he dieth there.

Atunci Adoni-Bezek a zis: „Şaptezeci de regi cu degetele cele mari de la mâini şi de la picioare tăiate, au fost folosiţi să adune firimituri de sub masa mea! După cum am făcut eu, tot aşa mi-a răsplătit şi mie Dumnezeu!“ L-au dus la Ierusalim şi a murit acolo.

8 A nd the sons of Judah fight against Jerusalem, and capture it, and smite it by the mouth of the sword, and the city they have sent into fire;

Cei din seminţia lui Iuda au luat cu asalt Ierusalimul şi l-au cucerit; l-au trecut prin ascuţişul sabiei şi au dat foc cetăţii.

9 a nd afterwards have the sons of Judah gone down to fight against the Canaanite, inhabiting the hill-country, and the south, and the low country;

După aceea cei din seminţia lui Iuda s-au dus să lupte împotriva canaaniţilor care locuiau în regiunea muntoasă din partea de răsărit a ţării şi în câmpie.

10 a nd Judah goeth unto the Canaanite who is dwelling in Hebron (and the name of Hebron formerly Kirjath-Arba), and they smite Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai.

Mai întâi au pornit împotriva canaaniţilor care locuiau la Hebron (numele Hebronului era atunci Chiriat-Arba). Acolo i-au învins pe Şeşai, pe Ahiman şi pe Talmai.

11 A nd he goeth thence unto the inhabitants of Debir (and the name of Debir formerly Kirjath-Sepher),

De acolo au pornit împotriva locuitorilor Debirului (înainte Debirul purta numele de Chiriat-Sefer).

12 a nd Caleb saith, `He who smiteth Kirjath-Sepher -- and hath captured it -- then I have given to him Achsah my daughter for a wife.'

Caleb a zis: „Aceluia care va ataca şi va cuceri Chiriat-Seferul îi voi da de soţie pe fiica mea Acsa!“

13 A nd Othniel son of Kenaz, younger brother of Caleb, doth capture it, and he giveth to him Achsah his daughter for a wife.

Otniel, fiul lui Chenaz, fratele mai mic al lui Caleb, a cucerit cetatea, iar Caleb i-a dat-o de soţie pe fiica lui, Acsa.

14 A nd it cometh to pass in her coming in, that she persuadeth him to ask from her father the field, and she lighteth from off the ass, and Caleb saith to her, `What -- to thee?'

Odată, venind la Otniel, Acsa l-a îndemnat să-i ceară tatălui ei un teren. Când ea s-a dat jos de pe măgar, Caleb a întrebat-o: – Ce doreşti?

15 A nd she saith to him, `Give to me a blessing; when the south land thou hast given me -- then thou hast given to me springs of water; and Caleb giveth to her the upper springs and the lower springs.

– Dă-mi o binecuvântare adevărată, i-a răspuns ea, căci mi-ai dat un teritoriu în Neghev! Dăruieşte-mi şi izvoare de ape! Şi astfel Caleb i-a dat izvoarele de sus şi izvoarele de jos.

16 A nd the sons of the Kenite, father-in-law of Moses, have gone up out of the city of palms with the sons of Judah the wilderness of Judah, which in the south of Arad, and they go and dwell with the people.

Urmaşii chenitului care îi era socru lui Moise au plecat din Cetatea Palmierilor împreună cu cei din seminţia lui Iuda, înspre pustia lui Iuda, care este la sud de Arad. Au călătorit şi au rămas împreună cu poporul.

17 A nd Judah goeth with Simeon his brother, and they smite the Canaanite inhabiting Zephath, and devote it; and calleth the name of the city Hormah.

Apoi cei din seminţia lui Iuda s-au dus împreună cu simeoniţii şi i-au atacat pe canaaniţii care locuiau la Ţefat. Au distrus toată cetatea şi apoi au numit-o Horma.

18 A nd Judah captureth Gaza and its border, and Askelon and its border, and Ekron and its border;

De asemenea, Iuda a cucerit Gaza cu teritoriul ei, Aşchelon cu teritoriul ei şi Ekron cu teritoriul ei.

19 a nd Jehovah is with Judah, and he occupieth the hill-country, but not to dispossess the inhabitants of the valley, for they have chariots of iron.

Domnul a fost cu Iuda şi Iuda a luat în stăpânire regiunea muntoasă, dar nu i-a putut izgoni pe locuitorii din câmpie pentru că aveau care de fier.

20 A nd they give to Caleb Hebron, as Moses hath spoken, and he dispossesseth thence the three sons of Anak.

Au dat lui Caleb cetatea Hebron, aşa cum spusese Moise şi el i-a izgonit de acolo pe cei trei fii ai lui Anac.

21 A nd the Jebusite, inhabiting Jerusalem, the sons of Benjamin have not dispossessed; and the Jebusite dwelleth with the sons of Benjamin, in Jerusalem, till this day.

Beniamiţii nu i-au izgonit pe iebusiţii care locuiau în Ierusalim şi astfel iebusiţii au locuit în Ierusalim până în ziua de azi.

22 A nd the house of Joseph go up -- even they -- to Beth-El, and Jehovah with them;

Cei din Casa lui Iosif au înaintat împotriva Betelului şi Domnul a fost cu ei.

23 a nd the house of Joseph cause to spy about Beth-El (and the name of the city formerly is Luz),

Cei din Casa lui Iosif au iscodit Betelul (numele cetăţii era cândva Luz).

24 a nd the watchers see a man coming out from the city, and say to him, `Shew us, we pray thee, the entrance of the city, and we have done with thee kindness.'

Iscoadele au văzut un om ieşit afară din cetate şi i-au zis: „Arată-ne intrarea în cetate şi îţi vom arăta îndurare!“

25 A nd he sheweth them the entrance of the city, and they smite the city by the mouth of the sword, and the man and all his family they have sent away;

După ce le-a arătat intrarea în cetate, ei au trecut-o prin ascuţişul sabiei, însă pe omul acela împreună cu tot clanul lui l-au lăsat să plece.

26 a nd the man goeth to the land of the Hittites, and buildeth a city, and calleth its name Luz -- it its name unto this day.

Omul acela a ajuns pe teritoriul hitiţilor şi a zidit o cetate pe care a numit-o Luz, nume care i-a rămas până în ziua de azi.

27 A nd Manasseh hath not occupied Beth-Shean and its towns, and Taanach and its towns, and the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, and the inhabitants of Iblaim and its towns, and the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns, and the Canaanite is desirous to dwell in that land;

Cei din seminţia lui Manase nu i-au izgonit pe locuitorii din Bet-Şan şi pe cei din satele dimprejurul ei, nici pe locuitorii din Taanah şi pe cei din satele dimprejurul ei, nici pe locuitorii din Dor, Ibleam şi Meghido şi nici pe cei din satele dimprejurul lor, astfel încât canaaniţii au continuat să locuiască în aceste ţinuturi.

28 a nd it cometh to pass, when Israel hath been strong, that he setteth the Canaanite to tribute, and hath not utterly dispossessed it.

Când Israel a ajuns puternic, el i-a supus pe canaaniţi la muncă forţată, dar nu i-a izgonit.

29 A nd Ephraim hath not dispossessed the Canaanite who is dwelling in Gezer, and the Canaanite dwelleth in its midst, in Gezer.

Cei din seminţia lui Efraim nu i-au izgonit nici ei pe canaaniţii care locuiau în Ghezer şi astfel, canaaniţii au locuit printre ei.

30 Z ebulun hath not dispossessed the inhabitants of Kitron, and the inhabitants of Nahalol, and the Canaanite dwelleth in its midst, and they become tributary.

Cei din seminţia lui Zabulon nu i-au izgonit pe locuitorii din Chitron, nici pe locuitorii din Nahalol şi, prin urmare, canaaniţii au locuit printre ei, fiind puşi la muncă forţată.

31 A sher hath not dispossessed the inhabitants of Accho, and the inhabitants of Zidon, and Ahlab, and Achzib, and Helbah, and Aphik, and Rehob;

Cei din seminţia lui Aşer nu i-au izgonit nici pe locuitorii din Aco, nici pe locuitorii din Sidon, din Ahlab, din Aczib, din Helba, din Afek şi din Rehob.

32 a nd the Asherite dwelleth in the midst of the Canaanite, the inhabitants of the land, for it hath not dispossessed them.

Şi astfel aşeriţii au locuit printre canaaniţi, locuitorii acelor ţinuturi.

33 N aphtali hath not dispossessed the inhabitants of Beth-Shemesh, and the inhabitants of Beth-Anath, and he dwelleth in the midst of the Canaanite, the inhabitants of the land; and the inhabitants of Beth-Shemesh and of Beth-Anath have become tributary to them.

Cei din seminţia lui Neftali nu i-au izgonit nici pe locuitorii din Bet-Şemeş, nici pe locuitorii din Bet-Anat, ci au locuit printre canaaniţi, locuitorii acelor ţinuturi. Totuşi locuitorii din Bet-Şemeş şi Bet-Anat au fost puşi la muncă forţată.

34 A nd the Amorites press the sons of Dan to the mountain, for they have not suffered them to go down to the valley;

Amoriţii i-au respins pe daniţi înspre regiunea muntoasă şi nu le-au dat voie să coboare la câmpie.

35 a nd the Amorite is desirous to dwell in mount Heres, in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim, and the hand of the house of Joseph is heavy, and they become tributary;

Amoriţii au continuat să locuiască la muntele Heres, la Aialon şi la Şaalbim, dar cei care i-au asuprit au fost cei din Casa lui Iosif, aceştia punându-i la muncă forţată.

36 a nd the border of the Amorite from the ascent of Akrabbim, from the rock and upward.

Teritoriul amoriţilor se întindea de la Înălţimea Scorpionului până la Sela şi în sus.
