1 A nd it cometh to pass, after the death of Joshua, that the sons of Israel ask at Jehovah, saying, `Who doth go up for us unto the Canaanite, at the commencement, to fight against it?'

بَعْدَ أنْ ماتَ يَشُوعُ، سألَ بَنُو إسْرائِيلَ اللهَ: «أيَّةُ قَبِيلَةٍ مِنّا يَنْبَغِي أنْ تَذْهَبَ أوَّلاً لِتُحارِبَ الكَنعانِيِّينَ؟»

2 A nd Jehovah saith, `Judah doth go up; lo, I have given the land into his hand.'

فَقالَ اللهُ: «لِتَذْهَبْ قَبِيلَةُ يَهُوذا أوَّلاً. وَأنا سَأُعْطيهُمُ الأرْضَ.»

3 A nd Judah saith to Simeon his brother, `Go up with me into my lot, and we fight against the Canaanite -- and I have gone, even I, with thee into thy lot;' and Simeon goeth with him.

فَقالَ بَنُو يَهُوذا لِبَنِي شِمْعُونَ أقرِبائِهِمْ: «تَعالَوا مَعَنا إلَى الأرْضِ الَّتِي قُسِمَتْ لَنا، وَلنُقاتِلِ الكَنْعانِيِّينَ مَعاً. ثُمَّ نَذْهَبُ نَحْنُ مَعَكُمْ إلَى الأرْضِ الَّتِي قُسِمَتْ لَكُمْ.» فَذَهَبَ بَنُو شِمْعُونَ مَعَ بَنِي يَهُوذا.

4 A nd Judah goeth up, and Jehovah giveth the Canaanite and the Perizzite into their hand, and they smite them in Bezek -- ten thousand men;

وَذَهَبَ بَنُو يَهُوذا، وَمَكَّنَهُمْ اللهُ مِنْ هَزِيمَةِ الكَنْعانِيِّينَ وَالفِرِزِّيِّينَ. وَقَتَلُوا عَشْرَةَ آلافِ رَجُلٍ مِنْهُمْ فِي بازَقَ.

5 a nd they find Adoni-Bezek in Bezek, and fight against him, and smite the Canaanite and the Perizzite.

وَوَجَدُوا سَيِّدَ بازَقَ فِي مَدينَةِ بازَقَ، فَحارَبُوهُ، وَهَزَمُوا الكَنعانِيِّينَ وَالفِرِزِّيِّينَ.

6 A nd Adoni-Bezek fleeth, and they pursue after him, and seize him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes,

فَهَرَبَ سَيِّدُ بازَقَ، وَلَكِنَّهُمْ لَحِقُوا بِهِ، فَأمسَكُوهُ وَقَطَعُوا أباهِمَ يَدَيهِ وَرِجلَيهِ.

7 a nd Adoni-Bezek saith, `Seventy kings -- their thumbs and their great toes cut off -- have been gathering under my table; as I have done so hath God repaid to me;' and they bring him in to Jerusalem, and he dieth there.

فَقالَ سَيِّدُ بازَقَ: «قَطَعْتُ أباهِمَ أيادِي وَأرجُلَ سَبعِينَ مَلِكاً، وَجَعَلْتُهُمْ يَلتَقِطُونَ فُتاتَ الطَّعامِ تَحْتَ مائِدَتِي. وَها قَدْ جازانِي اللهُ بِمِثلِ ما فَعَلْتُهُ بِهِمْ.» ثُمَّ أخَذُوهُ إلَى مَدينَةِ القُدْسِ حَيثُ ماتَ.

8 A nd the sons of Judah fight against Jerusalem, and capture it, and smite it by the mouth of the sword, and the city they have sent into fire;

وَهاجَمَ بَنُو يَهُوذا القُدسَ وَاستَولَوا عَلَيها، وَقَتَلُوا أهلَها بِحَدِّ السَّيفِ. ثُمَّ أحرَقُوا المَدِينَةَ.

9 a nd afterwards have the sons of Judah gone down to fight against the Canaanite, inhabiting the hill-country, and the south, and the low country;

ثُمَّ نَزَلَ بَنُو يَهُوذا لِمُقاتَلَةِ الكَنْعانِيِّينَ السّاكِنِينَ فِي المِنْطَقَةِ الجَبَلِيَّةِ وَالنَّقَبِ وَسُفُوحِ التِّلالِ الغَربِيَّةِ.

10 a nd Judah goeth unto the Canaanite who is dwelling in Hebron (and the name of Hebron formerly Kirjath-Arba), and they smite Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai.

وَحارَبَ بَنُو يَهُوذا الكَنعانِيِّينَ السّاكِنِينَ فِي مَدِينَةِ حَبْرُونَ. وَكانَتِ حَبْرُونُ تُدعَى سابِقاً «قَريَةَ أربَعَ.» وَهَزَمُوا شِيشايَ وَأخِيمانَ وَتِلْمايَ. كالَبْ وَابنَتُه

11 A nd he goeth thence unto the inhabitants of Debir (and the name of Debir formerly Kirjath-Sepher),

وَانطَلَقَ بَنُو يَهُوذا مِنْ هُناكَ لِمُقاتَلَةِ سُكّانِ دَبِيرَ الَّتِي كانَتْ تُدعَى سابِقاً «قَرْيَةَ سَفَرَ.»

12 a nd Caleb saith, `He who smiteth Kirjath-Sepher -- and hath captured it -- then I have given to him Achsah my daughter for a wife.'

ثُمَّ قالَ كالَبُ: «مَنْ يُهاجِمُ قَرْيَةَ سَفَرَ وَيَستَولِي عَلَيها فَإنِّي سَأُعطِيهِ ابنَتِي عَكْسَةَ زَوجَةً لَهُ.»

13 A nd Othniel son of Kenaz, younger brother of Caleb, doth capture it, and he giveth to him Achsah his daughter for a wife.

فَاسْتَولَى عَلَيها عُثْنِيئِيلُ بْنُ قَنازَ أخُو كالَبَ، فَأعطاهُ كالَبَ ابنَتَهُ عَكْسَةَ زَوجَةً لَهُ.

14 A nd it cometh to pass in her coming in, that she persuadeth him to ask from her father the field, and she lighteth from off the ass, and Caleb saith to her, `What -- to thee?'

وَلَمّا جاءَتْ إلَى عُثْنِيئِيلَ، حَثَّها عَلَى أنْ تَطلَبَ حَقلاً مِنْ أبِيها. فَلَمّا نَزَلَتْ مِنَ عَلَى الحِمارِ، قالَ لَها كالَبُ: «ما الأمْرُ؟»

15 A nd she saith to him, `Give to me a blessing; when the south land thou hast given me -- then thou hast given to me springs of water; and Caleb giveth to her the upper springs and the lower springs.

فَقالَتْ لَهُ: «امنَحنِي بَرَكَةً. قَدْ أعطَيتَنِي أرْضاً جافَّةً فِي النَّقَبِ، فَأعطِنِي بِرَكَ ماءٍ أيضاً.» فَأعطاها البِرَكَ العُلْيا وَالسُّفلَى.

16 A nd the sons of the Kenite, father-in-law of Moses, have gone up out of the city of palms with the sons of Judah the wilderness of Judah, which in the south of Arad, and they go and dwell with the people.

وَخَرَجَ نَسلُ القَينِيِّ الَّذِي كانَ حَما مُوسَى مِنْ مَدِينَةِ النَّخلِ، مَعَ بَنِي يَهُوذا، إلَى بَرِّيَّةِ يَهُوذا فِي صَحراءِ النَّقَبِ قُرْبَ مَدينَةِ عَرادَ. ثُمَّ ذَهَبُوا وَاسْتَقَرُّوا بَينَ العَمالِقَةِ.

17 A nd Judah goeth with Simeon his brother, and they smite the Canaanite inhabiting Zephath, and devote it; and calleth the name of the city Hormah.

ثُمَّ ذَهَبَ بَنُو يَهُوذا مَعَ أقرِبائِهِمْ بَنِي شِمْعُونَ، وَهَزَمُوا الكَنْعانِيِّينَ فِي مَدينَةِ صَفاةَ، وَدَمَّرُوها تَدْمِيراً كامِلاً. فَدُعِيَتِ المَدِينَةُ «حُرْمَةَ.»

18 A nd Judah captureth Gaza and its border, and Askelon and its border, and Ekron and its border;

وَاستَولَى بَنُو يَهُوذا عَلَى غَزَّةَ وَالأراضِي المُحيطَةِ بِها، وَعَسْقَلانَ وَالأراضِي المُحيطَةِ بِها، وَعَقْرُونَ وَالأراضِي المُحيطَةِ بِها.

19 a nd Jehovah is with Judah, and he occupieth the hill-country, but not to dispossess the inhabitants of the valley, for they have chariots of iron.

وَأعانَ اللهُ بَنِي يَهُوذا، فَاسْتَولَوا عَلَى المِنْطَقَةِ الجَبَلِيَّةِ. لَكِنَّهُمْ لَمْ يَقدِرُوا أنْ يَطرُدُوا سُكّانَ السَّهلِ، لأنَّهُمْ كانُوا يَملِكُونَ مَرْكَباتٍ حَدِيدِيَّةً.

20 A nd they give to Caleb Hebron, as Moses hath spoken, and he dispossesseth thence the three sons of Anak.

وَأُعطِيَتِ حَبْرُونُ لِكالَبَ حَسَبَ وَعْدِ مُوسَى. فَطَرَدَ كالَبُ ثَلاثَ عَشائِرَ مِنْ بَنِي عَناقَ مِنْ هُناكَ. بَنُو بَنْيامِيْنَ يَسْتَقِرُّونَ فِي القُدْس

21 A nd the Jebusite, inhabiting Jerusalem, the sons of Benjamin have not dispossessed; and the Jebusite dwelleth with the sons of Benjamin, in Jerusalem, till this day.

لَكِنَّ بَنِي بَنْيامِيْنَ لَمْ يَطرُدُوا اليَبُوسِيِّينَ السّاكِنِينَ فِي القُدْسِ. فَظَلَّ اليَبُوسِيُّونَ يَسكُنُونَ فِي مَدينَةِ القُدْسِ وَسَطَ بَنِي بَنْيامِيْنَ حَتَّى يَومِنا هَذا. بَنُو يُوسُفَ يَستَولُونَ عَلَى بَيتِ إيل

22 A nd the house of Joseph go up -- even they -- to Beth-El, and Jehovah with them;

وَخَرَجَ بَنُو يُوسُفَ أيضاً لِلهُجُومِ عَلَى بَيتِ إيلَ، فَأعانَهُمْ اللهُ.

23 a nd the house of Joseph cause to spy about Beth-El (and the name of the city formerly is Luz),

فَقَدْ أرسَلَ بَنُو يُوسُفَ رِجالاً يَستَكْشِفُونَ مَدِينَةَ بَيتِ إيلَ. وَكانَتِ المَدِينَةُ تُدْعَى سابِقاً لُوزَ.

24 a nd the watchers see a man coming out from the city, and say to him, `Shew us, we pray thee, the entrance of the city, and we have done with thee kindness.'

فَرَأى المُستَكشِفُونَ رَجُلاً خارِجاً مِنَ المَدِينَةِ، فَقالُوا لَهُ: «أرِنا مَدْخَلاً إلَى المَدِينَةِ، وَسَنُعامِلُكَ بِالحُسْنَى.»

25 A nd he sheweth them the entrance of the city, and they smite the city by the mouth of the sword, and the man and all his family they have sent away;

فَأراهُمُ الرَّجُلُ مَدْخَلاً إلَى المَدِينَةِ. فَقَتَلُوا أهلَ المَدِينَةِ بِحَدِّ السَّيفِ. لَكِنَّهُمْ أطلَقُوا الرَّجُلَ وَجَميعَ عَائِلَتَهُ.

26 a nd the man goeth to the land of the Hittites, and buildeth a city, and calleth its name Luz -- it its name unto this day.

فَذَهَبَ ذَلِكَ الرَّجُلُ إلَى أرْضِ الحِثِّيِّينَ وَبَنَى مَدِينَةً أسْماها لُوزَ. وَهُوَ اسْمُ المَدِينَةِ حَتَّى يَومِنا هَذا. عَشائِرُ أُخْرَى تُحارِبُ الكَنْعانِيِّين

27 A nd Manasseh hath not occupied Beth-Shean and its towns, and Taanach and its towns, and the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, and the inhabitants of Iblaim and its towns, and the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns, and the Canaanite is desirous to dwell in that land;

وَلَمْ يَطرُدْ بَنُو مَنَسَّى سُكّانَ بَيتِ شانَ وَقُراها، وَتَعْنَكَ وَقُراها، وَدُورَ وَقُراها، وَيِبلَعامَ وَقُراها، وَمَجِدُّو وَقُراها. فَظَلَّ الكَنْعانِيُّونَ يَسْكُنُونَ تِلْكَ الأرْضَ.

28 a nd it cometh to pass, when Israel hath been strong, that he setteth the Canaanite to tribute, and hath not utterly dispossessed it.

وَلَمّا قَوِيَ بَنُو إسْرائِيلَ، جَنَّدُوا الكَنْعانِيِّينَ عَلَى العَمَلِ عَبِيداً لَدَيهِمْ، لَكِنَّهُمْ لَمْ يَطرُدُوهُمْ.

29 A nd Ephraim hath not dispossessed the Canaanite who is dwelling in Gezer, and the Canaanite dwelleth in its midst, in Gezer.

وَلَمْ يَطرُد بَنُو أفْرايِمَ الكَنْعانِيِّينَ السّاكِنِينَ فِي جازَرَ، فَسَكَنَ الكَنْعانِيُّونَ بَينَهُمْ هُناكَ.

30 Z ebulun hath not dispossessed the inhabitants of Kitron, and the inhabitants of Nahalol, and the Canaanite dwelleth in its midst, and they become tributary.

وَلَمْ يَطرُدْ بَنُو زَبُولُونَ سُكّانَ قِطْرُونَ أوْ سُكّانَ نَهلُولَ، فَسَكَنَ الكَنْعانِيِّوُّنَ بَينَهُمْ، وَأُجْبِرُوا علَى العَمَلِ عَبِيداً لَدَيهِمْ.

31 A sher hath not dispossessed the inhabitants of Accho, and the inhabitants of Zidon, and Ahlab, and Achzib, and Helbah, and Aphik, and Rehob;

وَلَمْ يَطرُدْ بَنُو آشَرَ سُكّانَ عَكُّو وَصِيدُونَ وَأحلَبَ وَأكزِيبَ وَحَلْبَةَ وَأفِيقَ وَرَحُوبَ.

32 a nd the Asherite dwelleth in the midst of the Canaanite, the inhabitants of the land, for it hath not dispossessed them.

وَسَكَنَ بَنُو آشَرَ بَينَ الكَنْعانِيِّينَ الَّذِينَ سَكَنُوا الأرْضَ، لِأنَّ بَنِي آشَرَ لَمْ يَطْرُدُوهُمْ.

33 N aphtali hath not dispossessed the inhabitants of Beth-Shemesh, and the inhabitants of Beth-Anath, and he dwelleth in the midst of the Canaanite, the inhabitants of the land; and the inhabitants of Beth-Shemesh and of Beth-Anath have become tributary to them.

وَلَمْ يَطرُدْ بَنُو نَفْتالِي سُكّانَ بَيتِ شَمْسٍ، أوْ سُكّانَ بَيتِ عَناةَ، بَلْ سَكَنُوا بَينَ الكَنْعانِيِّينَ الَّذِينَ كانُوا يَسْكُنُونَ الأرْضَ. فَأُجبِرَ سُكّانُ بَيتَ شَمْسَ وَبَيتَ عَناةَ عَلَى العَمَلِ عَبِيداً لَدَيهِمْ.

34 A nd the Amorites press the sons of Dan to the mountain, for they have not suffered them to go down to the valley;

وَأجبَرَ الأمُورِيُّونَ بَنِي دانَ عَلَى العَوْدَةِ إلَى المِنْطَقَةِ الجَبَلِيَّةِ، وَلَمْ يَسْمَحُوا لَهُمْ بِالنُّزُولِ إلَى السَّهلِ،

35 a nd the Amorite is desirous to dwell in mount Heres, in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim, and the hand of the house of Joseph is heavy, and they become tributary;

إذْ كانَ الأمُورِيُّونَ عازِمِينَ عَلَى البَقاءِ فِي جَبَلِ حارَسَ وَأيَّلُونَ وَشَعَلُبِّيمَ. لَكِنَّ بَنِي يُوسُفَ ازْدادُوا قُوَّةً وَأجبَرُوا الأمُورِيِّينَ عَلَى العَمَلِ عَبِيداً لَدَيهِمْ.

36 a nd the border of the Amorite from the ascent of Akrabbim, from the rock and upward.

وَقَدِ امْتَدَّتْ حُدُودُ الأمُورِيِّينَ مِنْ عَقَبَةِ عَقْرَبَ، وَمِنْ سالَعَ وَما وَراءَهُما مِنْ جِبالِ.
