1 A son of a year Saul in his reigning, yea, two years he hath reigned over Israel,

كَانَ شَاوُلُ فِي الثَّلاثِينَ مِنْ عُمْرِهِ لَمَّا صارَ مَلِكاً. وَبَعْدَ مُرُورِ سَنَتَينِ عَلَى حُكْمِهِ،

2 a nd Saul chooseth for himself three thousand out of Israel; and two thousand are with Saul in Michmash, and in the hill-country of Beth-El; and a thousand have been with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin; and the remnant of the people he hath sent each to his tents.

اخْتارَ ثَلاثَةَ آلافِ رَجُلٍ مِنْ إسْرائِيلَ. فَكانَ ألفانِ مِنهُمْ مَعَهُ فِي مَدينَةِ مَخْماسَ وَفِي مِنْطَقَةِ بَيتِ إيلَ الجَبَلِيَّةِ. وَبَقِيَ ألفُ رَجُلٍ مَعَ يُوناثانَ فِي جِبْعَةَ فِي بَنْيامِيْنَ. وَصَرَفَ شاوُلُ بَقِيَّةَ الرِّجالِ إلَى بُيُوتِهِمْ.

3 A nd Jonathan smiteth the garrison of the Philistines which in Geba, and the Philistines hear, and Saul hath blown with a trumpet through all the land, saying, `Let the Hebrews hear.'

فَهَزَمَ يُوناثانُ فِرقَةً مِنَ الفِلِسْطِيِّينَ فِي مُعَسكَرِهِمْ فِي جِبْعَ، وَسَمِعَ الفِلِسْطِيُّونَ بِهَذا. فَأمَرَ شاوُلُ بِأنْ تُنفُخَ الأبواقُ فِي كُلِّ أنحاءِ أرْضِ إسْرائِيلَ، وَقالَ: «فَلْيَسْمَعِ الشَّعبُ العِبرانِيُّ بِما حَدَثَ.»

4 A nd all Israel have heard, saying, `Saul hath smitten the garrison of the Philistines,' and also, `Israel hath been abhorred by the Philistines;' and the people are called after Saul to Gilgal.

فَسَمِعَ جَميعُ بَنِي إسْرائِيلَ بِالخَبَرِ. وَقالُوا: «ضَرَبَ شاوُلُ مُعَسْكَرَ الفِلِسْطِيِّينَ. وَالآنَ يُبغِضُ الفِلِسْطِيُّونَ بَنِي إسْرائِيلَ بُغضاً شَدِيداً!» فَدُعِيَ الشَّعبُ إلَى الاجْتِماعِ مَعَ شاوُلَ فِي الجِلجالِ.

5 A nd the Philistines have been gathered to fight with Israel; thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and a people as the sand which on the sea-shore for multitude; and they come up and encamp in Michmash, east of Beth-Aven.

وَاحتَشَدَ الفِلِسْطِيُّونَ لِمُقاتَلَةِ إسْرائِيلَ. فَخَيَّمَ الفِلِسْطِيُّونَ فِي مِخْماسَ شَرقِيَّ بَيتِ آوِنَ. وَكانَ مَعَهُمْ ثَلاثَةُ آلافِ مَركَبَةٍ وَسِتَّةُ آلافِ فارِسٍ. وَكانَ عَدَدُ الجُنُودِ الفِلِسْطِيِّينَ كَبِيراً كَرَملِ الشّاطِئِ.

6 A nd the men of Israel have seen that they are distressed, that the people hath been oppressed, and the people hide themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in high places, and in pits.

فَأدْرَكَ بَنُو إسْرائِيلَ أنَّهُمْ فِي وَرطَةٍ. وَأحَسُّوا بِأنَّهُمْ وَقَعُوا فِي مِصيَدَةٍ. فَرَكَضُوا وَاختَبَأُوا فِي الكُهُوفِ وَشُقُوقِ الصُّخُورِ. اختَبَأُوا بَينَ الصُّخُورِ وَفِي الآبارِ، وَفِي حُفَرٍ فِي الأرْضِ.

7 A nd Hebrews have passed over the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead; and Saul yet in Gilgal, and all the people have trembled after him.

حَتَّى إنَّ بَعْضَ العِبرانِيِّينَ عَبَرَ نَهْرَ الأُردُنِّ إلَى أرْضِ جادَ وَجِلعادَ. وَكانَ شاوُلُ ما يَزالُ فِي الجِلجالِ. وَكانَ رِجالُ جَيشِهِ يَرتَعِدُونَ خَوفاً.

8 A nd he waiteth seven days, according to the appointment with Samuel, and Samuel hath not come to Gilgal, and the people are scattered from off him.

وَحَدَّدَ صَمُوئِيلُ مَوعِداً لِلِقاءِ شاوُلَ فِي الجِلجالِ. فانتَظَرَ شاوُلُ هُناكَ سَبعَةَ أيّامٍ. لَكِنَّ صَمُوئِيلَ لَمْ يَأْتِ بَعْدُ إلَى الجِلجالِ. وَبَدَأ بَعضُ رِجالِهِ يَترُكُونَهُ.

9 A nd Saul saith, `Bring nigh unto me the burnt-offering, and the peace-offerings;' and he causeth the burnt-offering to ascend.

فَقالَ شاوُلُ: «أحْضِرُوا إلَيَّ ذَبائِحَ صاعِدَةً وَذَبائِحَ الشَّرِكَةِ.» فَقَدَّمَ شاوُلُ الذَّبِيحَةَ الصّاعِدَةَ.

10 A nd it cometh to pass at his completing to cause the burnt-offering to ascend, that lo, Samuel hath come, and Saul goeth out to meet him, to bless him;

وَما أنِ انتَهَى مِنْ تَقدِيمِها، حَتَّى وَصَلَ صَمُوئِيلُ، فَخَرَجَ شاوُلُ لِلِقائِهِ وَالتَرْحِيبِ بِهِ.

11 a nd Samuel saith, `What hast thou done?' And Saul saith, `Because I saw that the people were scattered from off me, and thou hadst not come at the appointment of the days, and the Philistines are gathered to Michmash,

فَسَألَهُ صَمُوئِيلُ: «ما هَذا الَّذِي فَعَلْتَهُ؟» فَأجابَ شاوُلُ: «بَدَأ الجُنُودُ يَترُكُونَنِي. وَأنتَ تَأخَّرتَ عَنْ مَوعِدِكَ. وَكانَ الفِلِسْطِيُّونَ يَجمَعُونَ حُشُودَهُمْ فِي مَدينَةِ مِخماسَ.

12 a nd I say, Now do the Philistines come down unto me to Gilgal, and the face of Jehovah I have not appeased; and I force myself, and cause the burnt-offering to ascend.'

فَقُلْتُ لِنَفسِي: ‹سَيَأْتِي الفِلِسْطِيُّونَ إلَى هُنا وَيُهاجِمُونَنِي فِي الجِلجالِ.› وَلَمْ أكُنْ بَعدُ قَدْ طَلَبتُ إلَى اللهِ أنْ يُعطِيَنِي عَوناً. فَلَمْ أجِدْ بَدِيلاً عَنْ تَقدِيمِ الذَّبيحَةِ بِنَفسِي.»

13 A nd Samuel saith unto Saul, `Thou hast been foolish; thou hast not kept the command of Jehovah thy God, which He commanded thee, for now had Jehovah established thy kingdom over Israel unto the age;

فَقالَ صَمُوئيلُ: «لَقَدْ عَمِلْتَ عَملاً أحْمَقَ! وَلَمْ تُطِعْ إلَهَكَ. فَلَوِ التَزَمْتَ بِوَصايا اللهِ ، لَجَعَلَكَ أنتَ وَأهلَ بَيتِكَ تَحكُمُونَ إسْرائِيلَ إلَى الأبَدِ.

14 a nd, now, thy kingdom doth not stand, Jehovah hath sought for Himself a man according to His own heart, and Jehovah chargeth him for leader over His people, for thou hast not kept that which Jehovah commanded thee.'

أمّا الآنَ، فَلَنْ تَستَمِرَّ مَملَكَتُكَ. قَدْ فَتَّشَ اللهُ عَنْ رَجُلٍ كَمَا يُرِيدُهُ قَلبُهُ، فَعَيَّنَهُ اللهُ حاكِماً عَلَى شَعبِهِ، لأنَّكَ لَمْ تَلتَزِمْ بِوَصِيَّةِ اللهِ.»

15 A nd Samuel riseth, and goeth up from Gilgal to Gibeah of Benjamin; and Saul inspecteth the people who are found with him, about six hundred men,

ثُمَّ قامَ صَمُوئِيلُ وَغادَرَ الجِلْجالَ. مَعرَكَةُ مِخماس وَغادَرَ شاوُلُ وَبَقِيَّةُ جَيشِهِ الجِلجالَ، وَذَهَبُوا إلَى جِبْعَةِ بَنْيامِيْنَ. وَأحصَى شاوُلُ الرِّجالَ الَّذِينَ بَقَوا مَعَهُ، فَكانُوا سِتَّ مِئَةِ رَجُلٍ.

16 a nd Saul, and Jonathan his son, and the people who are found with them, are abiding in Gibeah of Benjamin, and the Philistines have encamped in Michmash.

وَذَهَبَ شاوُلُ وَابنُهُ يُوناثانُ، وَجُنُودُهُ إلَى جِبْعَ فِي بَنْيامِيْنَ. وَكانَ الفِلِسْطِيُّونَ مُعَسكِرِينَ فِي مِخماسَ.

17 A nd the destroyer goeth out from the camp of the Philistines -- three detachments; the one detachment turneth unto the way of Ophrah, unto the land of Shual;

فَبَدَأ أفضَلُ جُنُودِهِمِ الهُجُومَ. وَانقَسَمَ الجَيشُ الفِلِسْطِيُّ إلَى ثَلاثِ فِرَقٍ. ذَهَبَتْ فِرقَةٌ شَمالاً فِي طَرِيقِ عَفرَةَ قُربَ شُوعالَ.

18 a nd the one detachment turneth the way of Beth-Horon, and the one detachment turneth the way of the border which is looking on the valley of the Zeboim, toward the wilderness.

وَذَهَبَتِ الفِرقَةُ الثّانِيَةُ إلَى الطَّرِيقِ نَحوَ بَيتَ حُورُونَ. وَذَهَبَتِ المَجمُوعَةُ الثّالِثَةُ شَرقاً بِاتِّجاهِ الحُدُودِ المُشرِفَةِ عَلَى وادِي صَبُوعِيمَ نَحوَ الصَّحراءِ.

19 A nd an artificer is not found in all the land of Israel, for the Philistines said, `Lest the Hebrews make sword or spear;'

وَلَمْ يَكُنْ فِي كُلِّ إسْرائِيلَ كُلِّها حَدّادٌ واحِدٌ. فَلَمْ يُعَلِّمْهُمُ الفِلِسْطِيُّونَ لِأنَّهُمْ لَمْ يَشاءَوا أنْ يَصَنَعَ بَنُو إسْرائِيلَ سُيُوفاً وَرِماحاً.

20 a nd all Israel go down to the Philistines, to sharpen each his ploughshare, and his coulter, and his axe, and his mattock;

وَعِندَما كانَ بَنُو إسْرائِيلَ يَحتاجُونَ أنْ يَشحَذُوا مَحارِيثَهُمْ أوْ مَجارِفَهُمْ أوْ فُؤُوسَهُمْ أوْ مَناجِلَهُمْ، كانُوا يُضطَرُّونَ إلَى اللُّجُوءِ إلَى الحَدّادِينَ الفِلِسْطِيِّينَ.

21 a nd there hath been the file for mattocks, and for coulters, and for three-pronged rakes, and for the axes, and to set up the goads.

وَكانَتِ الأُجرَةُ ثُلُثَ مِثْقالٍ لِشَحذِ المَحارِيثِ وَالمَجارِفِ، وَسُدسَ مِثْقالٍ لِشَحذِ المَعاوِلِ وَالفُؤُوسِ وَالرُّؤُوسِ الحَدِيدِيَّةِ لِمِنْساسِ البَقَرِ.

22 A nd it hath been, in the day of battle, that there hath not been found sword and spear in the hand of any of the people who with Saul and with Jonathan -- and there is found to Saul and to Jonathan his son.

فَلَمْ يَكُنْ بَينَ يَدَيِّ أحَدٍ مِنْ جُنُودِ بَنِي إسْرائِيلَ فِي يَومِ المَعرَكَةِ سُيُوفٌ أوْ رِماحٌ حَدِيدِيَّةٌ. لَكِنْ كانَ لَدَى شاوُلُ وَابنُهُ يُوناثانُ فَقَط أسلِحَةٌ كَهَذِهِ.

23 A nd the station of the Philistines goeth out unto the passage of Michmash.

وَكانَتْ مَجمُوعَةٌ مِنَ الجُنُودِ الفِلِسْطِيِّينَ تَحرُسُ مَعبَرَ الجَبَلِ فِي مِخماسَ.
