1 A nd Jacob seeth that there is corn in Egypt, and Jacob saith to his sons, `Why do you look at each other?'

وَعَلِمَ يَعقُوبُ أنَّ فِي مِصْرَ قَمْحاً، فَقالَ لِأولادِهِ: «لِماذا يَنظُرُ بَعْضُكُمْ إلَى بَعضٍ؟»

2 h e saith also, `Lo, I have heard that there is corn in Egypt, go down thither, and buy for us from thence, and we live and do not die;'

وَقالَ: «قَدْ سَمِعْتُ أنَّ فِي مِصْرَ قَمحاً، فانْزِلُوا إلَى هُناكَ وَاشْتَرُوا لَنا قَمحاً، فَنَحيا وَلا نَمُوتُ.»

3 a nd the ten brethren of Joseph go down to buy corn in Egypt,

فَنَزَلَ إخْوَةُ يُوسُفَ العَشْرَةُ إلَى مِصْرَ لِيَشْتَرُوا قَمْحاً.

4 a nd Benjamin, Joseph's brother, Jacob hath not sent with his brethren, for he said, `Lest mischief meet him.'

لَكِنَّ يَعقُوبَ لَمْ يُرْسِلْ بَنْيامِيْنَ شَقِيقَ يُوسُفَ مَعَ بَقِيَّةِ إخْوَتِهِ. إذْ خَشِيَ أنْ يُصِيبَهُ أذَىً.

5 A nd the sons of Israel come to buy in the midst of those coming, for the famine hath been in the land of Canaan,

فَذَهَبَ أولادُ إسْرائِيلَ مَعَ كَثِيرِينَ إلَى مِصْرَ لِشِراءِ القَمحِ، لِأنَّ المَجاعَةَ وَصَلَتْ إلَى أرْضِ كَنْعانَ.

6 a nd Joseph is the ruler over the land, he who is selling to all the people of the land, and Joseph's brethren come and bow themselves to him -- face to the earth.

وَكانَ يُوسُفُ حاكِماً عَلَى أرْضِ مِصْرَ كُلِّها. وَكانَ هُوَ الَّذِي يَتَوَلَّى عَمَلِيَّةَ بَيعِ القَمْحِ لِكُلِّ أهلِ الأرْضِ. فَجاءَ إخْوَةُ يُوسُفَ وَانحَنُوا أمامَهُ وَوُجُوهُهُمْ إلَى الأرْضِ.

7 A nd Joseph seeth his brethren, and discerneth them, and maketh himself strange unto them, and speaketh with them sharp things, and saith unto them, `From whence have ye come?' and they say, `From the land of Canaan -- to buy food.'

فَلَمّا رَأى يُوسُفُ إخْوَتَهُ، عَرَفَهُمْ، لَكِنَّهُ تَظاهَرَ بِأنَّهُ لَمْ يَعْرِفْهُمْ. وَتَكَلَّمَ مَعْهُمْ بِفَظاظَةٍ وَقالَ لَهُمْ: «مِنْ أينَ جِئْتُمْ؟» فَقالُوا: «جِئْنا مِنْ أرْضِ كَنْعانَ لِنَشْتَرِيَ طَعاماً.»

8 A nd Joseph discerneth his brethren, but they have not discerned him,

فَمَيَّزَ يُوسُفُ إخْوَتَهُ. أمّا هُمْ فَلَمْ يُمَيِّزُوهُ.

9 a nd Joseph remembereth the dreams which he dreamed of them, and saith unto them, `Ye spies; to see the nakedness of the land ye have come.'

وَتَذَكَّرَ يُوسُفُ أيضاً الأحلامَ الَّتِي رَآها عَنْهُمْ. فَقالَ لَهُمْ: «ما أنتُمْ إلّا جَواسِيسُ، جِئْتُمْ لِتَكْتَشِفوا نِقاطَ ضَعْفِ أرْضِنا.»

10 A nd they say unto him, `No, my lord, but thy servants have come to buy food;

فَقالُوا لَهُ: «لا يا سَيِّدِي! نَحنُ خُدّامَكَ جِئْنا لِنَشْتَرِيَ طَعاماً.

11 w e all of us sons of one man, we right men; thy servants have not been spies;'

وَكُلُّنا أبْناءُ رَجُلٍ واحِدٍ. وَنَحنُ رِجالٌ صادِقُونَ. نَحنُ خُدّامَكَ لَسْنا جَواسِيسَ.»

12 a nd he saith unto them, `No, but the nakedness of the land ye have come to see;'

لَكِنَّهُ قالَ: «بَلْ جِئْتُمْ لِتَعرِفُوا نِقاطَ ضَعْفِنا.»

13 a nd they say, `Thy servants twelve brethren; we sons of one man in the land of Canaan, and lo, the young one with our father to-day, and the one is not.'

فَقالُوا: «نَحْنُ، خُدّامَكَ، اثْنا عَشَرَ أخاً، أبْناءُ رَجُلٍ واحِدٍ فِي كَنْعانَ. وَأصْغَرُنا عِنْدَ أبِينا الآنَ. وَواحِدٌ ماتَ.»

14 A nd Joseph saith unto them, `This that which I have spoken unto you, saying, Ye spies,

فَقالَ لَهُمْ يُوسُفُ: «كَما سَبَقَ أنْ قُلْتُ لَكُمْ. ما أنتُمْ إلّا جَواسِيسُ!

15 b y this ye are proved: Pharaoh liveth! if ye go out from this -- except by your young brother coming hither;

لَكِنِّي سَأمتَحِنُكُمْ بِهَذِهِ الطَّرِيقَةِ: أقْسِمُ بِحَياةِ فِرعَوْنَ أنَّكُمْ لَنْ تُغادِرُوا هَذا المَكانَ حَتَّى يَأْتِيَ أخُوكُمُ الأصْغَرُ إلَى هُنا.

16 s end one of you, and let him bring your brother, and ye, remain ye bound, and let your words be proved, whether truth be with you: and if not -- Pharaoh liveth! surely ye spies;'

فَأرْسِلُوا أحَدَكُمْ لِيَجلِبَ أخاكُمْ. وَسَتَظَلُّ بَقِيَّتُكُمْ حَتَّى ذَلِكَ الحِينِ فِي السِّجْنِ. وَبِهَذا أعرِفُ إنْ كُنتُمْ صادِقِينَ، وَإلّا، فَإنِّي أُقْسِمُ بِحَياةِ فِرعَوْنَ أنَّكُمْ حَقّاً جَواسِيسُ!»

17 a nd he removeth them unto charge three days.

ثُمَّ وَضَعَهُمْ يُوسُفُ فِي السِّجْنِ ثَلاثَةَ أيّامٍ. يُوسُفُ يمتحنُ إخْوَتَه

18 A nd Joseph saith unto them on the third day, `This do and live; God I fear!

ثُمَّ قالَ لَهُمْ يُوسُفُ فِي اليَوْمِ الثّالِثِ: «افْعَلُوا ما أقُولُهُ لَكُمْ فَتَحْيُوا. فَأنا أخافُ اللهَ.

19 i f ye right men, let one of your brethren be bound in the house of your ward, and ye, go, carry in corn the famine of your houses,

إنْ كُنْتُمْ صادِقِينَ، فَلْيَبقَ أحَدُ إخْوَتِكُمْ فِي السِّجْنِ حَيثُ هُنا. وَأمّا أنتُمْ فَخُذُوا قَمْحاً يَسُدُّ جُوعَ بُيُوتِكُمْ.

20 a nd your young brother ye bring unto me, and your words are established, and ye die not;' and they do so.

ثُمَّ أحْضِرُوا لِي أخاكُمُ الأصْغَرَ فَيَثبُتَ صِدْقُ كَلامِكُمْ، فَلا أقتُلُكُمْ.» فَوافَقُوا عَلَى ذَلِكَ.

21 A nd they say one unto another, `Verily we guilty concerning our brother, because we saw the distress of his soul, in his making supplication unto us, and we did not hearken: therefore hath this distress come upon us.'

وَقالَ أحَدُهُمْ لِلآخَرِ: «لا شَكَّ فِي أنَّ اللهَ يُعاقِبُنا بِسَبَبِ ما فَعَلْناهُ بِأخِينا. فَقَدْ رَأينا ضِيقَتَهُ عِندَما تَوَسَّلَ إلَينا أنْ نَرحَمَهُ. لَكِنَّنا لَمْ نُصْغِ إلَيهِ. لِهَذا جاءَتْ عَلَينا هَذِهِ الضِّيقَةُ.»

22 A nd Reuben answereth them, saying, `Spake I not unto you, saying, Sin not against the lad? and ye hearkened not; and his blood also, lo, it is required.'

فَقالَ لَهُمْ رَأُوبَيْنُ: «ألَمْ أقُلْ لَكُمْ لا تُؤْذُوا الفَتَى! لَكِنَّكُمْ لَمْ تُصْغُوا إلَيَّ. وَها نَحْنُ سَنَدْفَعُ ثَمَنَ دَمِهِ.»

23 A nd they have not known that Joseph understandeth, for the interpreter between them;

وَلَمْ يَعرِفُوا أنَّ يُوسُفَ كانَ يَفْهَمُ ما يَقُولُونَ، لِأنَّهُ كانَ هُناكَ مُتَرْجِمٌ بَينَهُمْ وَبَينَهُ.

24 a nd he turneth round from them, and weepeth, and turneth back unto them, and speaketh unto them, and taketh from them Simeon, and bindeth him before their eyes.

ثُمَّ ابْتَعَدَ يُوسُفُ عَنهُمْ وَبَكَى. ثُمَّ عادَ إلَيْهِمْ وَكَلَّمَهُمْ. ثُمَّ أخَذَ شَمْعُونَ مِنْ بَينِهِمْ، وَأمَرَ بِأنْ يُوثَقَ أمامَ عُيُونِهِمْ.

25 A nd Joseph commandeth, and they fill their vessels corn, also to put back the money of each unto his sack, and to give to them provision for the way; and one doth to them so.

ثُمَّ أمَرَ يُوسُفُ خُدّامَهُ بِأنْ يَملأُوا أكياسَ إخْوَتِهِ بِالقَمحِ. وَأمَرَهُمْ أيضاً أنْ يُعِيدُوا مالَ كُلِّ واحِدٍ مِنْهُمْ إلَى كِيسِهِ، وَأنْ يُعطُوهُمْ طَعاماً لِلرِّحلَةِ. فَفَعَلَ الخُدّامُ هَذا.

26 A nd they lift up their corn upon their asses, and go from thence,

وَهَكَذا حَمَّلُوا قَمحَهُمْ عَلَى حَمِيرِهِمْ وَانطَلَقُوا.

27 a nd the one openeth his sack to give provender to his ass at a lodging-place, and he seeth his money, and lo, it in the mouth of his bag,

وَعِندَما تَوَقَّفُوا لِيَبِيتُوا لَيلَتَهُمْ، فَتَحَ أحَدُهُمْ كِيسَ القَمحِ لِيُطعِمَ حِمارَهُ، فَرَأى مالَهُ فِي كِيسٍ فَوْقَ القَمحِ.

28 a nd he saith unto his brethren, `My money hath been put back, and also, lo, in my bag:' and their heart goeth out, and they tremble, one to another saying, `What this God hath done to us!'

فَقالَ لإخوَتِهِ: «قَدْ رُدَّ مالِي إلَيَّ. وَها هُوَ فِي كِيسِي!» فَتَحَيَّرُوا كَثِيراً وَارتَعَدُوا خَوفاً وَقالُوا: «ما هَذا الَّذِي فَعَلَهُ اللهُ بِنا؟» وصولُ الخبرِ ليَعْقُوب

29 A nd they come in unto Jacob their father, to the land of Canaan, and they declare to him all the things meeting them, saying,

وَلَمّا جاءُوا إلَى أبِيهِمْ يَعقُوبَ فِي أرْضِ كَنْعانَ، أخْبَرُوهُ بِكُلِّ ما حَدَثَ لَهُمْ.

30 ` The man, the lord of the land, hath spoken with us sharp things, and maketh us as spies of the land;

قالُوا: «كَلَّمَنا الرَّجُلُ الَّذِي يَحكُمُ فِي مِصْرَ بِفَظاظَةٍ، وَوَضَعَنا فِي السِّجنِ كَما لَوْ أنَّنا كُنّا نَتَجَسَّسُ عَلَى أرْضِهِ.

31 a nd we say unto him, We right men, we have not been spies,

فَقُلْنا لَهُ: ‹نَحنُ رِجالٌ صادِقُونَ. وَلَسْنا بِجَواسِيسَ.

32 w e twelve brethren, sons of our father, the one is not, and the young one to-day with our father in the land of Canaan.

نَحنُ اثْنا عَشَرَ أخاً لأبينا. واحِدٌ ماتَ، وَالأصْغَرُ مَعَ أبِينا فِي أرْضِ كَنْعانَ.›

33 ` And the man, the lord of the land, saith unto us, By this I know that ye right men -- one of your brethren leave with me, and the famine of your houses take ye and go,

«فَقالَ لَنا الرَّجُلُ الَّذِي يَحكُمُ مِصْرَ: ‹بِهَذا أعلَمُ أنَّكُمْ صادِقُونَ. اتْرُكُوا أحَدَ إخْوَتِكُمْ عِنْدِي. وَخُذُوا قَمحاً يَسُدُّ جُوعَ بُيُوتِكُمْ وَامضُوا.

34 a nd bring your young brother unto me, and I know that ye not spies, but ye right men; your brother I give to you, and ye trade with the land.'

ثُمَّ أحضِرُوا إلَيَّ أخاكُمُ الأصْغَرَ. حِينَئِذٍ، سَأتَأكَّدُ مِنْ أنَّكُمْ لَسْتُمْ جَواسِيسَ، بَلْ صادِقِينَ، وَسَأُطلِقُ سَراحَ أخِيكُمْ، وَسَأسْمَحُ لَكُمْ بِأنْ تُتاجِرُوا فِي أرْضِ مِصْرَ.›»

35 A nd it cometh to pass, they are emptying their sacks, and lo, the bundle of each man's silver in his sack, and they see their bundles of silver, they and their father, and are afraid;

وَلَمّا أفرَغُوا أكياسَهُمْ، وَجَدَ كُلُّ واحِدٍ مِنْهُمْ صُرَّةَ مالِهِ فِي كِيسِهِ. وَلَمّا رَأَوْا وَأبوْهُمْ صُرَرَ مالِهِمْ خافُوا.

36 a nd Jacob their father saith unto them, `Me ye have bereaved; Joseph is not, and Simeon is not, and Benjamin ye take -- against me have been all these.'

وَقالَ لَهُمْ أبوهُمْ يَعقُوبُ: «جَرَّدْتُمُونِي مِنْ أولادِي! فَقَدْتُ يُوسُفَ وَفَقَدْتُ شَمْعُونُ، وَها أنتُمْ تَأْخُذُونَ بَنْيامِيْنَ أيضاً. فَكَيفَ أحتَمِلُ هَذا كُلَّهُ؟»

37 A nd Reuben speaketh unto his father, saying, `My two sons thou dost put to death, if I bring him not in unto thee; give him into my hand, and I -- I bring him back unto thee;'

فَقالَ رَأُوبَيْنُ لِأبِيهِ: «اقْتُلْ وَلَدَيَّ إذا لَمْ أُرجِعْ بَنْيامِيْنَ إلَيكَ. ضَعْهُ فِي عُهدَتِي، وَسَأُرجِعُهُ إلَيكَ.»

38 a nd he saith, `My son doth not go down with you, for his brother dead, and he by himself is left; when mischief hath met him in the way in which ye go, then ye have brought down my grey hairs in sorrow to sheol.'

لَكِنَّ يَعقُوبَ قالَ: «لَنْ يَنزِلَ ابْنِي مَعَكُمْ. فَشَقيقُهُ قَدْ ماتَ. وَهُوَ الوَحِيدُ الَّذِي تَبَقَّى لِي مِنْ زَوجَتِي راحِيلَ. فَإنْ أصابَهُ أذَىً فِي الطَّريقِ، سَأنْزِلُ إلَى الهاوِيَةِ عَجُوزاً حَزِيناً.»
