1 A nd Jacob seeth that there is corn in Egypt, and Jacob saith to his sons, `Why do you look at each other?'

А Яків побачив, що в Єгипті є хліб. І сказав Яків до синів своїх: Пощо ви споглядаєте один на одного?

2 h e saith also, `Lo, I have heard that there is corn in Egypt, go down thither, and buy for us from thence, and we live and do not die;'

І сказав він: Ось чув я, що в Єгипті є хліб; зійдіть туди, і купіть нам хліба ізвідти, і будемо жити, і не помремо.

3 a nd the ten brethren of Joseph go down to buy corn in Egypt,

І зійшли десятеро Йосипових братів купити збіжжя з Єгипту.

4 a nd Benjamin, Joseph's brother, Jacob hath not sent with his brethren, for he said, `Lest mischief meet him.'

А Веніямина, Йосипового брата, Яків не послав із братами його, бо сказав: Щоб не спіткало його яке нещастя!

5 A nd the sons of Israel come to buy in the midst of those coming, for the famine hath been in the land of Canaan,

І прибули Ізраїлеві сини купити хліба разом з іншими, що приходили, бо був голод у Краї ханаанськім.

6 a nd Joseph is the ruler over the land, he who is selling to all the people of the land, and Joseph's brethren come and bow themselves to him -- face to the earth.

А Йосип він володар над тим краєм, він продавав хліб усьому народові тієї землі. І прибули Йосипові брати, та й уклонилися йому обличчям до землі.

7 A nd Joseph seeth his brethren, and discerneth them, and maketh himself strange unto them, and speaketh with them sharp things, and saith unto them, `From whence have ye come?' and they say, `From the land of Canaan -- to buy food.'

І побачив Йосип братів своїх, і пізнав їх, та не дав пізнати себе. І говорив із ними суворо, і промовив до них: Звідкіля прибули ви? А вони відказали: З ханаанського Краю купити їжі.

8 A nd Joseph discerneth his brethren, but they have not discerned him,

І пізнав Йосип братів своїх, а вони не впізнали його.

9 a nd Joseph remembereth the dreams which he dreamed of them, and saith unto them, `Ye spies; to see the nakedness of the land ye have come.'

І згадав Йосип сни, що про них йому снились були. І сказав він до них: Ви шпигуни! Ви прибули підглянути слабі місця цієї землі.

10 A nd they say unto him, `No, my lord, but thy servants have come to buy food;

А вони відказали йому: Ні, пане мій, а раби твої прибули купити їжі.

11 w e all of us sons of one man, we right men; thy servants have not been spies;'

Ми всі сини одного чоловіка, ми правдиві. Раби твої не були шпигунами!

12 a nd he saith unto them, `No, but the nakedness of the land ye have come to see;'

Він же промовив до них: Ні, бо ви прийшли підглянути слабі місця цієї землі!

13 a nd they say, `Thy servants twelve brethren; we sons of one man in the land of Canaan, and lo, the young one with our father to-day, and the one is not.'

А вони відказали: Дванадцятеро твоїх рабів брати ми, сини одного чоловіка в ханаанському Краї. А наймолодший тепер із батьком нашим, а одного нема.

14 A nd Joseph saith unto them, `This that which I have spoken unto you, saying, Ye spies,

І промовив їм Йосип: Оце те, що я сказав був до вас, говорячи: Ви шпигуни.

15 b y this ye are proved: Pharaoh liveth! if ye go out from this -- except by your young brother coming hither;

Оцим ви будете випробувані: Клянуся життям фараоновим, що ви не вийдете звідси, якщо не прийде сюди наймолодший ваш брат!

16 s end one of you, and let him bring your brother, and ye, remain ye bound, and let your words be proved, whether truth be with you: and if not -- Pharaoh liveth! surely ye spies;'

Пошліть з-поміж себе одного, і нехай візьме вашого брата, а ви будете ув'язнені. І слова ваші будуть піддані пробі, чи правда з вами; а коли ні, клянуся життям фараоновим, що ви шпигуни!

17 a nd he removeth them unto charge three days.

І він забрав їх під варту на три дні.

18 A nd Joseph saith unto them on the third day, `This do and live; God I fear!

А третього дня Йосип промовив до них: Зробіть це і живіть. Я Бога боюся,

19 i f ye right men, let one of your brethren be bound in the house of your ward, and ye, go, carry in corn the famine of your houses,

якщо ви правдиві. Один брат ваш буде ув'язнений в домі вашої варти, а ви йдіть, принесіть хліба для заспокоєння голоду ваших домів.

20 a nd your young brother ye bring unto me, and your words are established, and ye die not;' and they do so.

А свого наймолодшого брата приведіть до мене, і будуть потверджені ваші слова, а ви не повмираєте. І вони зробили так.

21 A nd they say one unto another, `Verily we guilty concerning our brother, because we saw the distress of his soul, in his making supplication unto us, and we did not hearken: therefore hath this distress come upon us.'

І говорили вони один одному: Справді, винні ми за нашого брата, бо ми бачили недолю душі його, коли він благав нас, а ми не послухали... Тому то прийшло це нещастя на нас!

22 A nd Reuben answereth them, saying, `Spake I not unto you, saying, Sin not against the lad? and ye hearkened not; and his blood also, lo, it is required.'

І відповів їм Рувим, говорячи: Чи не говорив я вам, кажучи: Не грішіть проти хлопця, та ви не послухали. А оце й кров його жадається...

23 A nd they have not known that Joseph understandeth, for the interpreter between them;

А вони не знали, що Йосип їх розуміє, бо був поміж ними перекладач.

24 a nd he turneth round from them, and weepeth, and turneth back unto them, and speaketh unto them, and taketh from them Simeon, and bindeth him before their eyes.

А він відвернувся від них та й заплакав... І вернувся до них, і говорив із ними. І взяв від них Симеона, та й зв'язав його на їхніх очах.

25 A nd Joseph commandeth, and they fill their vessels corn, also to put back the money of each unto his sack, and to give to them provision for the way; and one doth to them so.

А Йосип наказав, щоб наповнили їхні мішки збіжжям, а срібло їхнє вернули кожному до його мішка, і дали їм поживи на дорогу. І їм зроблено так.

26 A nd they lift up their corn upon their asses, and go from thence,

І понесли вони хліб свій на ослах своїх, і пішли звідти.

27 a nd the one openeth his sack to give provender to his ass at a lodging-place, and he seeth his money, and lo, it in the mouth of his bag,

І відкрив один мішка свого, щоб ослові своєму дати паші на нічлігу, та й побачив срібло своє, а воно ось в отворі мішка його!

28 a nd he saith unto his brethren, `My money hath been put back, and also, lo, in my bag:' and their heart goeth out, and they tremble, one to another saying, `What this God hath done to us!'

І сказав він братам своїм: Повернене срібло моє, і ось воно в мішку моїм! І завмерло їм серце, і вони затремтіли, говорячи один до одного: Що це Бог нам зробив?

29 A nd they come in unto Jacob their father, to the land of Canaan, and they declare to him all the things meeting them, saying,

І прибули вони до Якова, батька свого, до Краю ханаанського, і розповіли йому все, що їх спіткало було, говорячи:

30 ` The man, the lord of the land, hath spoken with us sharp things, and maketh us as spies of the land;

Той муж, пан того краю, говорив із нами суворо, і прийняв був нас як шпигунів того краю.

31 a nd we say unto him, We right men, we have not been spies,

А ми сказали йому: Ми правдиві, не були ми шпигунами!

32 w e twelve brethren, sons of our father, the one is not, and the young one to-day with our father in the land of Canaan.

Ми дванадцятеро братів, сини нашого батька. Одного нема, а наймолодший тепер з нашим батьком у ханаанському Краї.

33 ` And the man, the lord of the land, saith unto us, By this I know that ye right men -- one of your brethren leave with me, and the famine of your houses take ye and go,

І сказав до нас муж той, пан того краю: З того пізнаю, що правдиві ви, зоставте зо мною одного вашого брата, а на голод домів ваших візьміть хліб та й ідіть.

34 a nd bring your young brother unto me, and I know that ye not spies, but ye right men; your brother I give to you, and ye trade with the land.'

І приведіть до мене брата вашого найменшого, і буду я знати, що ви не шпигуни, що ви правдиві. Тоді віддам вам вашого брата, і ви можете переходити цей край для купівлі.

35 A nd it cometh to pass, they are emptying their sacks, and lo, the bundle of each man's silver in his sack, and they see their bundles of silver, they and their father, and are afraid;

І сталося, вони випорожнювали мішки свої, а ось у кожного вузлик срібла його в його мішку! І побачили вузлики срібла свого, вони та їх батько, і полякались...

36 a nd Jacob their father saith unto them, `Me ye have bereaved; Joseph is not, and Simeon is not, and Benjamin ye take -- against me have been all these.'

І сказав до них Яків, їх батько: Ви позбавили мене дітей, Йосипа нема, і Симеона нема, а тепер Веніямина заберете? Усе те на мене!

37 A nd Reuben speaketh unto his father, saying, `My two sons thou dost put to death, if I bring him not in unto thee; give him into my hand, and I -- I bring him back unto thee;'

І промовив Рувим до батька свого, кажучи: Двох синів моїх уб'єш, коли не приведу його до тебе! Дай же його на руку мою, а я поверну його до тебе.

38 a nd he saith, `My son doth not go down with you, for his brother dead, and he by himself is left; when mischief hath met him in the way in which ye go, then ye have brought down my grey hairs in sorrow to sheol.'

А той відказав: Не зійде з вами мій син, бо брат його вмер, а він сам позостався... А трапиться йому нещастя в дорозі, якою підете, то в смутку зведете мою сивину до шеолу!...
