1 R emember also thy Creators in days of thy youth, While that the evil days come not, Nor the years have arrived, that thou sayest, `I have no pleasure in them.'

І пам'ятай в днях юнацтва свого про свого Творця, аж поки не прийдуть злі дні, й не наступлять літа, про які говорити ти будеш: Для мене вони неприємні!

2 W hile that the sun is not darkened, and the light, And the moon, and the stars, And the thick clouds returned after the rain.

аж поки не стемніє сонце, і світло, і місяць, і зорі, і не вернуться хмари густі за дощем,

3 I n the day that keepers of the house tremble, And men of strength have bowed themselves, And grinders have ceased, because they have become few. And those looking out at the windows have become dim,

у день, коли затремтять ті, хто дім стереже, і зігнуться мужні, і спинять роботу свою млинарі, бо їх стане мало, і потемніють ті, хто в вікно визирає,

4 A nd doors have been shut in the street. When the noise of the grinding is low, And riseth at the voice of the bird, And all daughters of song are bowed down.

і двері подвійні на вулицю замкнені будуть, як зменшиться гуркіт млина, і голос пташини замовкне, і затихнуть всі дочки співучі,

5 A lso of that which is high they are afraid, And of the low places in the way, And the almond-tree is despised, And the grasshopper is become a burden, And want is increased, For man is going unto his home age-during, And the mourners have gone round through the street.

і будуть боятись високого місця, і жахи в дорозі їм будуть, і мигдаль зацвіте, й обтяжіє кобилка, і загине бажання, бо людина відходить до вічного дому свого, а по вулиці будуть ходити довкола голосільники,

6 W hile that the silver cord is not removed, And the golden bowl broken, And the pitcher broken by the fountain, And the wheel broken at the well.

аж поки не пірветься срібний шнурок, і не зломиться кругла посудина з золота, і при джерелі не розіб'ється глек, і не зламається коло, й не руне в криницю...

7 A nd the dust returneth to the earth as it was, And the spirit returneth to God who gave it.

І вернеться порох у землю, як був, а дух вернеться знову до Бога, що дав був його!

8 V anity of vanities, said the preacher, the whole vanity.

Наймарніша марнота, сказав Проповідник, марнота усе!...

9 A nd further, because the preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge, and gave ear, and sought out -- he made right many similes.

Крім того, що Проповідник був мудрий, він навчав ще народ знання. Він важив та досліджував, склав багато приповістей.

10 T he preacher sought to find out pleasing words, and, written the upright, words of truth.

Проповідник пильнував знаходити потрібні слова, і вірно писав правдиві слова.

11 W ords of the wise as goads, and as fences planted the masters of collections, they have been given by one shepherd.

Слова мудрих немов оті леза в ґірлизі, і мов позабивані цвяхи, складачі ж таких слів, вони дані від одного Пастиря.

12 A nd further, from these, my son, be warned; the making of many books hath no end, and much study a weariness of the flesh.

А понад те, сину мій, будь обережний: складати багато книжок не буде кінця, а багато навчатися мука для тіла!

13 T he end of the whole matter let us hear: -- `Fear God, and keep His commands, for this the whole of man.

Підсумок усього почутого: Бога бійся, й чини Його заповіді, бо належить це кожній людині!

14 F or every work doth God bring into judgment, with every hidden thing, whether good or bad.'

Бо Бог приведе кожну справу на суд, і все потаємне, чи добре воно, чи лихе!
