1 A nd Jethro priest of Midian, father-in-law of Moses, heareth all that God hath done for Moses, and for Israel his people, that Jehovah hath brought out Israel from Egypt,

І почув Їтро, жрець мідіянський, Мойсеїв тесть, усе, що зробив був Бог для Мойсея та для Свого народу Ізраїлевого, що вивів Господь Ізраїля з Єгипту.

2 a nd Jethro, father-in-law of Moses, taketh Zipporah, wife of Moses, besides her parents,

І взяв Їтро, Мойсеїв тесть, жінку Мойсеєву Ціппору, по відісланні її,

3 a nd her two sons, of whom the name of the one Gershom, for he said, `a sojourner I have been in a strange land:'

та обох синів її, що ймення одному Ґершом, бо сказав був: Я став приходьком у чужому краї,

4 a nd the name of the other Eliezer, for, `the God of my father for my help, and doth deliver me from the sword of Pharaoh.'

а ймення другому Еліезер, бо Бог мого батька був мені поміччю, і визволив мене від фараонового меча.

5 A nd Jethro, father-in-law of Moses, cometh, and his sons, and his wife, unto Moses, unto the wilderness where he is encamping -- the mount of God;

І прибув Їтро, тесть Мойсеїв, і сини його та жінка його до Мойсея в пустиню, де він отаборився там біля Божої гори.

6 a nd he saith unto Moses, `I, thy father-in-law, Jethro, am coming unto thee, and thy wife, and her two sons with her.'

І сказав він до Мойсея: Я, тесть твій Їтро, приходжу до тебе, і жінка твоя, і обидва сини її з нею.

7 A nd Moses goeth out to meet his father-in-law, and boweth himself, and kisseth him, and they ask one at another of welfare, and come into the tent;

І вийшов Мойсей навпроти свого тестя, та й уклонився до землі, і поцілував його. І питали вони один одного про мир, і ввійшли до намету.

8 a nd Moses recounteth to his father-in-law all that Jehovah hath done to Pharaoh, and to the Egyptians, on account of Israel, all the travail which hath found them in the way, and Jehovah doth deliver them.

І оповів Мойсей своєму тестеві про все, що зробив був Господь фараонові та Єгиптові через Ізраїля, про всі ті труднощі, які він спіткав був по дорозі, та Господь визволив їх.

9 A nd Jethro rejoiceth for all the good which Jehovah hath done to Israel, whom He hath delivered from the hand of the Egyptians;

І тішився Їтро всім тим добром, що вчинив Господь для Ізраїля, що визволив його з єгипетської руки.

10 a nd Jethro saith, `Blessed Jehovah, who hath delivered you from the hand of the Egyptians, and from the hand of Pharaoh -- who hath delivered this people from under the hand of the Egyptians;

І промовив Їтро: Благословенний Господь, що визволив вас з єгипетської руки та з руки фараонової, що визволив народ з-під руки єгипетської.

11 n ow I have known that Jehovah greater than all the gods, for in the thing they have acted proudly -- above them!'

Тепер я знаю, що Господь більший за всіх богів, бо зробив це за те, що єгиптяни вихвалялись над ними.

12 A nd Jethro, father-in-law of Moses, taketh a burnt-offering and sacrifices for God; and Aaron cometh in, and all the elders of Israel, to eat bread with the father-in-law of Moses, before God.

І взяв Їтро, Мойсеїв тесть, цілопалення та жертви для Бога. І прийшов Аарон та всі старші Ізраїлеві їсти хліб з Мойсеєвим тестем перед Божим обличчям.

13 A nd it cometh to pass on the morrow, that Moses sitteth to judge the people, and the people stand before Moses, from the morning unto the evening;

І сталося назавтра, і сів Мойсей судити народ, а народ стояв навколо Мойсея від ранку аж до вечора.

14 a nd the father-in-law of Moses seeth all that he is doing to the people, and saith, `What this thing which thou art doing to the people? wherefore art thou sitting by thyself, and all the people standing by thee from morning till evening?'

І побачив тесть Мойсеїв усе, що він робить народові, та й сказав: Що це за річ, що ти робиш народові? Для чого ти сидиш сам один, а ввесь народ стоїть навколо від ранку аж до вечора?

15 A nd Moses saith to his father-in-law, `Because the people come unto me to seek God;

А Мойсей відказав своєму тестеві: Бо народ приходить до мене питатися суду Бога.

16 w hen they have a matter, it hath come unto me, and I have judged between a man and his neighbour, and made known the statutes of God, and His laws.'

Бо як мають вони справу, то приходять до мене, і я суджу поміж тим і тим, та оголошую постанови Божі та закони Його.

17 A nd the father-in-law of Moses saith unto him, `The thing which thou art doing not good;

І сказав тесть Мойсеїв до нього: Недобра ця річ, що ти чиниш.

18 t hou dost surely wear away, both thou, and this people which with thee, for the thing is too heavy for thee, thou art not able to do it by thyself.

Справді стомишся і ти, і народ той, що з тобою, бо ця справа тяжча за тебе. Не потрапиш ти чинити її сам один!

19 ` Now, hearken to my voice, I counsel thee, and God is with thee: be thou for the people over-against God, and thou hast brought in the things unto God;

Тепер послухай мого слова, пораджу тобі, і буде Бог із тобою! Стій за народ перед Богом, і принось справи до Бога.

20 a nd thou hast warned them the statutes and the laws, and hast made known to them the way in which they go, and the work which they do.

І ти остережеш їх за постанови та за закони, і об'явиш їм ту путь, якою вони підуть, і те діло, яке вони зроблять.

21 ` And thou -- thou dost provide out of all the people men of ability, fearing God, men of truth, hating dishonest gain, and hast placed over them, heads of thousands, heads of hundreds, heads of fifties, and heads of tens,

А ти наздриш зо всього народу мужів здібних, богобоязливих, мужів справедливих, що ненавидять зиск, і настановиш їх над ними тисяцькими, сотниками, п'ятдесятниками та десятниками.

22 a nd they have judged the people at all times; and it hath come to pass, every great matter they bring in unto thee, and every small matter they judge themselves; and lighten it from off thyself, and they have borne with thee.

І будуть вони судити народ кожного часу. І станеться, кожну велику справу вони принесуть до тебе, а кожну малу справу розсудять самі. Полегши собі, і нехай вони несуть тягар із тобою.

23 I f thou dost this thing, and God hath commanded thee, then thou hast been able to stand, and all this people also goeth in unto its place in peace.'

Коли ти зробиш цю річ, а Бог тобі накаже, то ти втримаєшся, а також увесь народ цей прийде на своє місце в мирі.

24 A nd Moses hearkeneth to the voice of his father-in-law, and doth all that he said,

І послухався Мойсей голосу тестя свого, і зробив усе, що той був сказав.

25 a nd Moses chooseth men of ability out of all Israel, and maketh them chiefs over the people, heads of thousands, heads of hundreds, heads of fifties, and heads of tens,

І вибрав Мойсей здібних мужів зо всього Ізраїля, і настановив їх начальниками над народом, тисяцькими, сотниками, п'ятдесятниками та десятниками.

26 a nd they have judged the people at all times; the hard matter they bring in unto Moses, and every small matter they judge themselves.

І судили вони народ кожного часу. Справу трудну приносили Мойсеєві, а кожну малу справу судили самі.

27 A nd Moses sendeth his father-in-law away, and he goeth away unto his own land.

І відпустив Мойсей тестя свого, і він пішов собі до краю свого.
