1 A nd the days are many, and the word of Jehovah hath been unto Elijah in the third year, saying, `Go, appear unto Ahab, and I give rain on the face of the ground;'

І минуло багато днів, і було Господнє слово до Іллі третього року, говорячи: Іди, покажися до Ахава, а Я дам дощ на поверхню землі.

2 a nd Elijah goeth to appear unto Ahab. And the famine is severe in Samaria,

І пішов Ілля показатися до Ахава. А в Асирії був сильний голод.

3 a nd Ahab calleth unto Obadiah, who over the house -- and Obadiah hath been fearing Jehovah greatly,

І покликав Ахав Овдія, що був над домом, а Овдій був дуже богобійний.

4 a nd it cometh to pass, in Jezebel's cutting off the prophets of Jehovah, that Obadiah taketh a hundred prophets, and hideth them, fifty men in a cave, and hath sustained them with bread and water --

І сталося, коли Єзавель вигублювала Господніх пророків, то Овдій узяв сотню пророків, та й сховав їх по п'ятидесяти чоловіка в печері, і годував їх хлібом та водою.

5 a nd Ahab saith unto Obadiah, `Go through the land, unto all fountains of waters, and unto all the brooks, if so be we find hay, and keep alive horse and mule, and do not cut off any of the cattle.'

І сказав Ахав до Овдія: Іди по Краю до всіх водних джерел та до всіх потоків, може знайдемо трави, і позоставимо при житті коня та мула, і не вигубимо худоби..

6 A nd they apportion to themselves the land, to pass over into it; Ahab hath gone in one way by himself, and Obadiah hath gone in another way by himself;

І поділили вони собі Край, щоб перейти по ньому, Ахав пішов однією дорогою сам, Овдій пішов сам другою дорогою.

7 a nd Obadiah in the way, and lo, Elijah -- to meet him; and he discerneth him, and falleth on his face, and saith, `Art thou he -- my lord Elijah?'

І був Овдій у дорозі, аж ось Ілля назустріч йому. І пізнав він його, і впав на обличчя своє та й сказав: Чи то ти, пане мій Іллє?

8 A nd he saith to him, `I; go, say to thy lord, Lo, Elijah.'

А той відказав йому: Я. Іди, скажи панові своєму: Ось тут Ілля!

9 A nd he saith, `What have I sinned, that thou art giving thy servant into the hand of Ahab -- to put me to death?

А він сказав: Чим я прогрішив, що ти віддаєш свого раба в Ахавову руку, щоб він убив мене?

10 J ehovah thy God liveth, if there is a nation and kingdom whither my lord hath not sent to seek thee; and they said, He is not, then he caused the kingdom and the nation to swear, that it doth not find thee;

Як живий Господь, Бог твій, немає народу та царства, що туди не посилав би пан мій шукати тебе. А коли говорили: Нема його, то він заприсягав те царство та той народ, що знайдуть тебе.

11 a nd now, thou art saying, Go, say to thy lord, Lo, Elijah;

А тепер ти говориш: Іди, скажи своєму панові: Ось тут Ілля!

12 a nd it hath been, I go from thee, and the Spirit of Jehovah doth lift thee up, whither I know not, and I have come to declare to Ahab, and he doth not find thee, and he hath slain me; and thy servant is fearing Jehovah from my youth.

І станеться, я піду від тебе, а Дух Господній понесе тебе на те місце, якого не знаю. І прийду я, щоб донести Ахаву, а коли він не знайде тебе, то вб'є мене. А раб твій боїться Господа від своєї молодости.

13 ` Hath it not been declared to my lord that which I have done in Jezebel's slaying the prophets of Jehovah, that I hide of the prophets of Jehovah a hundred men, fifty by fifty in a cave, and sustained them with bread and water?

Чи ж не було сказано панові моєму те, що зробив я, коли Єзавель побивала Господніх пророків, а я сховав був із Господніх пророків сотню чоловіка, по п'ятидесяти чоловіка в печері, і годував їх хлібом та водою?

14 a nd now thou art saying, Go, say to my lord, Lo, Elijah -- and he hath slain me!'

А тепер ти кажеш: Іди, скажи своєму панові: Ось тут Ілля, і він мене вб'є!...

15 A nd Elijah saith, `Jehovah of Hosts liveth, before whom I have stood, surely to-day I appear unto him.'

Та Ілля відказав: Як живий Господь Саваот, що я стою перед Його лицем, сьогодні я покажуся йому!

16 A nd Obadiah goeth to meet Ahab, and declareth to him, and Ahab goeth to meet Elijah,

І пішов Овдій назустріч Ахаву, та й доніс йому те. І пішов Ахав навпроти Іллі.

17 a nd it cometh to pass at Ahab's seeing Elijah, that Ahab saith unto him, `Art thou he -- the troubler of Israel?'

І сталося, коли Ахав побачив Іллю, то Ахав сказав до нього: Чи це ти, що непокоїш Ізраїля?

18 A nd he saith, `I have not troubled Israel, but thou and the house of thy father, in your forsaking the commands of Jehovah, and thou goest after the Baalim;

А той відказав: Не я внещасливив Ізраїля, а тільки ти та дім твого батька через ваше недотримання Господніх заповідей, та й ти пішов за Ваалами.

19 a nd now, send, gather unto me all Israel, unto the mount of Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the shrine, four hundred -- eating at the table of Jezebel.'

А тепер пошли, збери до мене на гору Кармел усього Ізраїля та чотири сотні й п'ятдесят Ваалових пророків, та чотири сотні пророків Астарти, що їдять зо столу Єзавелі.

20 A nd Ahab sendeth among all the sons of Israel, and gathereth the prophets unto the mount of Carmel;

І послав Ахав по всіх Ізраїлевих синах, і зібрав пророків на гору Кармел.

21 a nd Elijah cometh nigh unto all the people, and saith, `Till when are ye leaping on the two branches? -- if Jehovah God, go after Him; and if Baal, go after him;' and the people have not answered him a word.

І підійшов Ілля до всього народу й сказав: Чи довго ви будете скакати на двох галузках? Якщо Господь Бог, ідіть за Ним, а якщо Ваал ідіть за ним! Та не відповів йому народ ані слова.

22 A nd Elijah saith unto the people, `I -- I have been left a prophet of Jehovah -- by myself; and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty men;

І сказав Ілля до народу: Я сам позостався Господній пророк, а пророків Ваалових чотири сотні й п'ятдесят чоловіка.

23 a nd let them give to us two bullocks, and they choose for themselves the one bullock, and cut it in pieces, and place on the wood, and place no fire; and I -- I prepare the other bullock, and have put on the wood, and fire I do not place; --

І нехай дадуть нам двох бичків, і нехай вони виберуть собі одного бичка, і нехай заріжуть його, і нехай покладуть на дрова, а огню не покладуть. І я приготую одного бичка, і дам на дрова, а огню не покладу.

24 a nd ye have called in the name of your god, and I -- I call in the name of Jehovah, and it hath been, the god who answereth by fire -- He the God.' And all the people answer and say, `Good the word.'

І ви покличете ім'я бога вашого, а я покличу Ім'я Господа. І станеться, той Бог, що відповість огнем, Він Бог! І відповів той народ та й сказав: Це добре слово!

25 A nd Elijah saith to the prophets of Baal, `Choose for you the one bullock, and prepare first, for ye the multitude, and call ye in the name of your god, and place no fire.'

І сказав Ілля до Ваалових пророків: Виберіть собі одного бичка, і приготуйте перші, бо ви численніші, і покличте ім'я свого бога, і огню не покладете.

26 A nd they take the bullock that gave to them, and prepare, and call in the name of Baal from the morning even till the noon, saying, `O Baal, answer us!' and there is no voice, and there is none answering; and they leap on the altar that one had made.

І взяли вони того бичка, що він дав їм, і вони приготували й кликали Ваалове ім'я від ранку й аж до полудня, говорячи: Ваале, почуй нас! Та не було ані голосу, ані відповіді. І скакали вони біля жертівника, що зробили.

27 A nd it cometh to pass, at noon, that Elijah playeth on them, and saith, `Call with a loud voice, for he a god, for he is meditating, or pursuing, or on a journey; it may be he is asleep, an doth awake.'

І сталося опівдні, і сміявся з них Ілля й говорив: Кличте голосом сильнішим, бо він бог! Може він роздумує, або відлучився, або в дорозі! Може він спить, то прокинеться!

28 A nd they call with a loud voice, and cut themselves, according to their ordinance, with swords and with spears, till a flowing of blood on them;

І стали вони кликати голосом сильнішим, і кололися, за своїм звичаєм, мечами та ратищами, аж лилася з них кров.

29 a nd it cometh to pass, at the passing by of the noon, that they feign themselves prophets till the going up of the present, and there is no voice, and there is none answering, and there is none attending.

І сталося, як минувся південь, то вони пророкували аж до часу принесення хлібної жертви, та не було ані голосу, ані відповіді, ані слуху...

30 A nd Elijah saith to all the people, `Come nigh unto me;' and all the people come nigh unto him, and he repaireth the altar of Jehovah that is broken down;

І сказав Ілля до всього народу: Підійдіть до мене! І підійшов увесь народ до нього, а він поправив розбитого Господнього жертівника.

31 a nd Elijah taketh twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, unto whom the word of Jehovah was, saying, `Israel is thy name;'

І взяв Ілля дванадцятеро каміння, за числом племен синів Якова, до якого було слово Господнє, говорячи: Ізраїль буде ім'я твоє!

32 a nd he buildeth with the stones an altar, in the name of Jehovah, and maketh a trench, as about the space of two measures of seed, round about the altar.

і збудував із того каміння жертівника в Ім'я Господнє, і зробив рова, площею на дві саті насіння, навколо жертівника.

33 A nd he arrangeth the wood, and cutteth in pieces the bullock, and placeth on the wood, and saith, `Fill ye four pitchers of water, and pour on the burnt-offering, and on the wood;

І наклав дров, і зарізав бичка та й поклав на дровах.

34 a nd he saith, `Do a second time;' and they do a second time; and he saith, `Do a third time;' and they do a third time;

І він сказав: Наповніть чотири відрі води, і нехай виллють на цілопалення та на дрова. І сказав: Повторіть! І повторили. І сказав: Зробіть утретє! І зробили втретє.

35 a nd the water goeth round about the altar, and also, the trench he hath filled with water.

І потекла вода навколо жертівника, а також рів наповнився водою.

36 A nd it cometh to pass, at the going up of the present, that Elijah the prophet cometh nigh and saith, `Jehovah, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, to-day let it be known that Thou God in Israel, and I Thy servant, that by Thy word I have done the whole of these things;

І сталося в час принесення хлібної жертви, що підійшов пророк Ілля та й сказав: Господи, Боже Авраамів, Ісаків та Ізраїлів! Сьогодні пізнають, що Ти Ізраїлів Бог, а я Твій раб, і що все оце я зробив Твоїм словом.

37 a nswer me, O Jehovah, answer me, and this people doth know that Thou Jehovah God; and Thou hast turned their heart backward.'

Вислухай мене, Господи, вислухай мене, і нехай пізнає цей народ, що Ти Господь, Бог, і Ти обернеш їхнє серце назад!

38 A nd there falleth a fire of Jehovah, and consumeth the burnt-offering, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and the water that in the trench it hath licked up.

І спав Господній огонь, та й пожер цілопалення, і дрова, і каміння, і порох, і вилизав воду, що в рові...

39 A nd all the people see, and fall on their faces, and say, `Jehovah, He the God, Jehovah, He the God.'

І побачили це всі люди, та й попадали на обличчя свої й говорили: Господь, Він Бог, Господь, Він Бог!

40 A nd Elijah saith to them, `Catch ye the prophets of Baal; let not a man escape of them;' and they catch them, and Elijah bringeth them down unto the stream Kishon, and doth slaughter them there.

І сказав до них Ілля: Схопіть Ваалових пророків! Нехай ніхто не втече з них! І похапали їх, а Ілля звів їх до потоку Кішон, та й порізав їх...

41 A nd Elijah saith to Ahab, `Go up, eat and drink, because of the sound of the noise of the shower.'

І сказав Ілля до Ахава: Увійди, їж і пий, бо ось чути шум дощу.

42 A nd Ahab goeth up to eat, and to drink, and Elijah hath gone up unto the top of Carmel, and he stretcheth himself out on the earth, and he placeth his face between his knees,

І пішов Ахав, щоб їсти та пити, а Ілля зійшов на верхів'я Кармелу, і нахилився до землі, і поклав обличчя своє між свої коліна.

43 a nd saith unto his young man, `Go up, I pray thee, look attentively the way of the sea;' and he goeth up and looketh attentively, and saith, `There is nothing;' and he saith, `Turn back,' seven times.

І сказав він до свого хлопця: Вийди, подивися в напрямі моря! І той вийшов і подивився та й сказав: Нема нічого. Та він відказав: Вернися сім раз!

44 A nd it cometh to pass, at the seventh, that he saith, `Lo, a little thickness as the palm of a man is coming up out of the sea.' And he saith, `Go up, say unto Ahab, `Bind -- and go down, and the shower doth not restrain thee.'

І сталося сьомого разу, і він сказав: Ось мала хмара, немов долоня людська, підіймається з моря. А він сказав: Піди, скажи Ахавові: Запрягай і зійди, і не затримає тебе дощ.

45 A nd it cometh to pass, in the meantime, that the heavens have become black -- thick clouds and wind -- and the shower is great; and Ahab rideth, and goeth to Jezreel,

І сталося по недовгому часі, і потемніло небо від хмар, і зірвався вітер, і пішов великий дощ. А Ахав сів на воза, та й відправився в Їзреел.

46 a nd the hand of Jehovah hath been on Elijah, and he girdeth up his loins, and runneth before Ahab, till thine entering Jezreel.

А Господня рука була на Іллі. І він оперезав свої стегна, та й побіг перед Ахавом аж до самого Їзреелу.
