1 A nd Jacob dwelleth in the land of his father's sojournings -- in the land of Canaan.

І осівся Яків у Краї мешкання батька свого, в Краї ханаанському.

2 T hese births of Jacob: Joseph, a son of seventeen years, hath been enjoying himself with his brethren among the flock, (and he a youth,) with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives, and Joseph bringeth in an account of their evil unto their father.

Оце оповість про Якова. Йосип, віку сімнадцяти літ, пас, як юнак, отару з братами своїми, з синами Білги та з синами Зілпи, жінок батька свого. І Йосип доносив недобрі звістки про них до їхнього батька.

3 A nd Israel hath loved Joseph more than any of his sons, for he a son of his old age, and hath made for him a long coat;

А Ізраїль любив Йосипа над усіх синів своїх, бо він був у нього сином старости. І він справив йому квітчасте вбрання.

4 a nd his brethren see that their father hath loved him more than any of his brethren, and they hate him, and have not been able to speak him peaceably.

І бачили його браття, що їх батько полюбив його над усіх братів його, і зненавиділи його, і не могли говорити з ним спокійно.

5 A nd Joseph dreameth a dream, and declareth to his brethren, and they add still more to hate him.

І снився був Йосипові сон, і він розповів своїм браттям, а вони ще збільшили ненависть до нього.

6 A nd he saith unto them, `Hear ye, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed:

І сказав він до них: Послухайте но про той сон, що снився мені.

7 t hat, lo, we are binding bundles in the midst of the field, and lo, my bundle hath arisen, and hath also stood up, and lo, your bundles are round about, and bow themselves to my bundle.'

А ото ми в'яжемо снопи серед поля, і ось мій сніп зачав уставати, та й став. І ось оточують ваші снопи, та й вклоняються снопові моєму.

8 A nd his brethren say to him, `Dost thou certainly reign over us? dost thou certainly rule over us?' and they add still more to hate him, for his dreams, and for his words.

І сказали йому його браття: Чи справді ти будеш царювати над нами, чи теж справді ти будеш панувати над нами? І вони збільшили ненависть до нього через сни його та через слова його.

9 A nd he dreameth yet another dream, and recounteth it to his brethren, and saith, `Lo, I have dreamed a dream again, and lo, the sun and the moon, and eleven stars, are bowing themselves to me.'

І снився йому ще сон інший, і він оповів його братам своїм, та й сказав: Оце снився мені ще сон, і ось сонце та місяць та одинадцять зір вклоняються мені.

10 A nd he recounteth unto his father, and unto his brethren; and his father pusheth against him, and saith to him, `What this dream which thou hast dreamt? do we certainly come -- I, and thy mother, and thy brethren -- to bow ourselves to thee, to the earth?'

І він розповів це батькові своєму та браттям своїм. І докорив йому батько його, та й промовив до нього: Що то за сон, що снився тобі? Чи справді прийдемо ми, я та мати твоя та брати твої, щоб уклонитися тобі до землі?

11 a nd his brethren are zealous against him, and his father hath watched the matter.

І заздрили йому брати його, а батько його запам'ятав ці слова.

12 A nd his brethren go to feed the flock of their father in Shechem,

І пішли брати його пасти отару свого батька в Сихем.

13 a nd Israel saith unto Joseph, `Are not thy brethren feeding in Shechem? come, and I send thee unto them;' and he saith to him, `Here I;'

І сказав Ізраїль до Йосипа: Таж брати твої пасуть у Сихемі! Іди ж, і я пошлю тебе до них! А той відказав йому: Ось я!

14 a nd he saith to him, `Go, I pray thee, see the peace of thy brethren, and the peace of the flock, and bring me back word;' and he sendeth him from the valley of Hebron, and he cometh to Shechem.

І сказав він до нього: Піди но, побач стан братів твоїх і стан отари, та й дай мені відповідь. І він послав його з долини Хеврону, і той прибув до Сихему.

15 A nd a man findeth him, and lo, he is wandering in the field, and the man asketh him, saying, `What seekest thou?'

І знайшов його один чоловік, а він ось блукає по полю. І запитав його той чоловік, кажучи: Чого ти шукаєш?

16 a nd he saith, `My brethren I am seeking, declare to me, I pray thee, where they are feeding?'

А той відказав: Я шукаю братів своїх. Скажи ж мені, де вони випасають?

17 A nd the man saith, `They have journeyed from this, for I have heard some saying, Let us go to Dothan,' and Joseph goeth after his brethren, and findeth them in Dothan.

І сказав той чоловік: Вони пішли звідси, бо я чув, як казали вони: Ходімо до Дотаїну. І пішов Йосип за своїми братами, і знайшов їх у Дотаїні.

18 A nd they see him from afar, even before he draweth near unto them, and they conspire against him to put him to death.

А вони побачили його здалека, і поки він наблизився до них, то змовлялися на нього, щоб убити його.

19 A nd they say one unto another, `Lo, this man of the dreams cometh;

І сказали вони один одному: Ось іде той сновидець!

20 a nd now, come, and we slay him, and cast him into one of the pits, and have said, An evil beast hath devoured him; and we see what his dreams are.'

А тепер давайте вбиймо його, і вкиньмо його до однієї з ям, та й скажемо: Дикий звір з'їв його! І побачимо, що буде з його снами.

21 A nd Reuben heareth, and delivereth him out of their hand, and saith, `Let us not smite the life;'

І почув це Рувим, і визволив його з руки їхньої, і сказав: Не губімо душі його!

22 a nd Reuben saith unto them, `Shed no blood; cast him into this pit which in the wilderness, and put not forth a hand upon him,' -- in order to deliver him out of their hand, to bring him back unto his father.

І сказав до них Рувим: Не проливайте крови, киньте його до ями тієї, що в пустині, а руки не кладіть на нього, щоб визволити його з їхньої руки, щоб вернути його до батька його.

23 A nd it cometh to pass, when Joseph hath come unto his brethren, that they strip Joseph of his coat, the long coat which upon him,

І сталося, коли прийшов Йосип до братів своїх, то вони стягнули з Йосипа вбрання його, вбрання квітчасте, що на ньому було.

24 a nd take him and cast him into the pit, and the pit empty, there is no water in it.

І взяли його, та й кинули його до ями, а яма та порожня була, не було в ній води.

25 A nd they sit down to eat bread, and they lift up their eyes, and look, and lo, a company of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead, and their camels bearing spices, and balm, and myrrh, going to take down to Egypt.

І сіли вони попоїсти хліба. І звели вони очі свої та й побачили, ось караван ізмаїлітів іде з Ґілеаду, а верблюди їхні несуть пахощі, і бальзам, і ладан, іде він спровадити це до Єгипту.

26 A nd Judah saith unto his brethren, `What gain when we slay our brother, and have concealed his blood?

І сказав Юда до своїх братів: Яка користь, що вб'ємо нашого брата, і затаїмо його кров?

27 C ome, and we sell him to the Ishmaelites, and our hands are not on him, for he our brother -- our flesh;' and his brethren hearken.

Давайте продамо його ізмаїльтянам, і рука наша нехай не буде на ньому, бо він брат нам, він наше тіло. І послухалися брати його.

28 A nd Midianite merchantmen pass by and they draw out and bring up Joseph out of the pit, and sell Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty silverlings, and they bring Joseph into Egypt.

І коли проходили мідіяніти, купці, то витягли й підняли Йосипа з ями. І продали Йосипа ізмаїльтянам за двадцять срібняків, а ті повели Йосипа до Єгипту.

29 A nd Reuben returneth unto the pit, and lo, Joseph is not in the pit, and he rendeth his garments,

А Рувим вернувся до ями, аж нема Йосипа в ямі! І розірвав він одежу свою...

30 a nd he returneth unto his brethren, and saith, `The lad is not, and I -- whither am I going?'

І вернувся він до братів своїх, та й сказав: Немає хлопця! А я, куди я піду?

31 A nd they take the coat of Joseph, and slaughter a kid of the goats, and dip the coat in the blood,

А вони взяли Йосипове вбрання, і зарізали козла, і вмочили вбрання в кров.

32 a nd send the long coat, and they bring in unto their father, and say, `This have we found; discern, we pray thee, whether it thy son's coat or not?'

І послали вони квітчасте вбрання, і принесли до свого батька, та й сказали: Оце ми знайшли. Пізнай но, чи це вбрання твого сина воно, чи ні?

33 A nd he discerneth it, and saith, `My son's coat! an evil beast hath devoured him; torn -- torn is Joseph!'

А він пізнав його та й сказав: Вбрання мого сина... Дикий звір його з'їв... Справді розшарпаний Йосип!

34 A nd Jacob rendeth his raiment, and putteth sackcloth on his loins, and becometh a mourner for his son many days,

І роздер Яків одіж свою, і зодягнув веретище на стегна свої, і багато днів справляв жалобу по синові своєму...

35 a nd all his sons and all his daughters rise to comfort him, and he refuseth to comfort himself, and saith, `For -- I go down mourning unto my son, to Sheol,' and his father weepeth for him.

І зачали всі сини його та всі дочки його потішати його. Але він не міг утішитися, та й сказав: У жалобі зійду я до сина мого до шеолу. І плакав за ним його батько.

36 A nd the Medanites have sold him unto Egypt, to Potiphar, a eunuch of Pharaoh, head of the executioners.

І мідіяніти продали Йосипа до Єгипту, до Потіфара, царедворця фараонового, начальника царської сторожі.
