1 A nd the Ziphites come in unto Saul, at Gibeah, saying, `Is not David hiding himself in the height of Hachilah, on the front of the desert?'

І прийшли зіфеяни до Саула до Ґів'ї, говорячи: Он Давид ховається на взгір'ях Гахіли навпроти Єшімону!

2 A nd Saul riseth, and goeth down unto the wilderness of Ziph, and with him three thousand men, chosen ones of Israel, to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph.

І встав Саул, і зійшов у пустиню Зіф, а з ним три тисячі чоловіка, вибраних із Ізраїля, щоб шукати Давида в пустині Зіф.

3 A nd Saul encampeth in the height of Hachilah, which on the front of the desert, by the way, and David is abiding in the wilderness, and he seeth that Saul hath come after him in to the wilderness;

І таборував Саул на згір'ї Гахіли, що навпроти Єшімону, на дорозі. А Давид пробував у пустині, і побачив, що Саул вийшов за ним до пустині.

4 a nd David sendeth spies, and knoweth that Saul hath come unto Nachon,

І послав Давид підглядачів, і довідався, що Саул дійсно прийшов.

5 a nd David riseth, and cometh in unto the place where Saul hath encamped, and David seeth the place where Saul hath lain, and Abner son of Ner, head of his host, and Saul is lying in the path, and the people are encamping round about him.

А Давид устав, і прийшов до місця, де таборував Саул. І Давид побачив те місце, де лежав Саул та Авнер, син Нерів, керівник його війська. А Саул лежав у таборі, а народ таборував навколо нього.

6 A nd David answereth and saith unto Ahimelech the Hittite, and unto Abishai son of Zeruiah, brother of Joab, saying, `Who doth go down with me unto Saul, unto the camp?' and Abishai saith, `I -- I go down with thee.'

І звернувся Давид, і сказав до хіттеянина Ахімелеха та до Авішая, Церуєвого сина, Йоавого брата, говорячи: Хто зійде зо мною до Саула до табору? І сказав Авішай: Я зійду з тобою!

7 A nd David cometh -- and Abishai -- unto the people by night, and lo, Saul is lying sleeping in the path, and his spear struck into the earth at his pillow, and abner and the people are lying round about him.

І прийшов Давид та Авішай до Саулового народу вночі, аж ось Саул лежить, спить у таборі, а спис його встромлений у землю в приголів'ї його, а Авнер та народ лежать навколо нього.

8 A nd Abishai saith unto David, `God hath shut up to-day thine enemy into thy hand; and, now, let me smite him, I pray thee, with a spear, even into the earth at once -- and I do repeat to him.'

І сказав Авішай до Давида: Сьогодні Бог видав твого ворога в руку твою, а тепер проколю я його списом аж до землі одним ударом, і не повторю йому!

9 A nd David saith unto Abishai, `Destroy him not; for who hath put forth his hand against the anointed of Jehovah, and been acquitted?'

І сказав Давид до Авішая: Не губи його, бо хто простягав руку свою на Господнього помазанця, і був невинний?

10 A nd David saith, `Jehovah liveth; except Jehovah doth smite him, or his day come that he hath died, or into battle he go down, and hath been consumed --

І сказав Давид: Як живий Господь, тільки Господь уразить його: або прийде день його і він помре, або він піде на війну і загине.

11 f ar be it from me, by Jehovah, from putting forth my hand against the anointed of Jehovah; and, now, take, I pray thee, the spear which at his pillow, and the cruse of water, and we go away.'

Борони мене, Господи, простягнути свою руку на Господнього помазанця! А тепер візьми цього списа, що в приголів'ї його, та горня води, і ходімо собі!

12 A nd David taketh the spear, and the cruse of water at the pillow of Saul, and they go away, and there is none seeing, and there is none knowing, and there is none awaking, for all of them are sleeping, for a deep sleep Jehovah hath fallen upon them.

І взяв Давид списа та горня води з Саулового приголів'я, та й пішли собі. І ніхто не бачив, і не знав, і не збудився, бо всі вони спали, бо на них упав сон від Господа.

13 A nd David passeth over to the other side, and standeth on the top of the hill afar off -- great the place between them;

І перейшов Давид на той бік, і став здалека на верховині гори, а між ними велика просторінь.

14 a nd David calleth unto the people, and unto Abner son of Ner, saying, `Dost thou not answer, Abner?' and Abner answereth and saith, `Who thou hast called unto the king?'

І крикнув Давид до народу та до Авнера, Нерового сина, говорячи: Чи ж не відповіси, Авнере? А Авнер відповів та сказав: Хто ти, що кликав до царя?

15 A nd David saith unto Abner, `Art not thou a man? and who like thee in Israel? but why hast thou not watched over thy lord the king? for one of the people had come in to destroy the king, thy lord.

І сказав Давид до Авнера: Чи ти не муж? І хто рівний тобі в Ізраїлі? І чому не пильнував ти свого пана, царя? Бо приходив один із народу, щоб погубити царя, твого пана.

16 N ot good is this thing which thou hast done; Jehovah liveth, but ye sons of death, in that ye have not watched over your lord, over the anointed of Jehovah; and now, see where the king's spear, and the cruse of water which at his bolster.'

Не добра це річ, що ти зробив! Як живий Господь, ви повинні померти, бо не пильнували ви пана свого, Господнього помазанця! А тепер побач, де царів спис, та де горня води, що були в приголів'ї його?

17 A nd Saul discerneth the voice of David, and saith, `Is this thy voice, my son David?' and David saith, `My voice, my lord, O king!'

І пізнав Саул Давидів голос, та й сказав: Чи це твій голос, сину мій Давиде? А Давид сказав: Мій голос, пане мій, царю!

18 a nd he saith, `Why this -- my lord is pursuing after his servant? for what have I done, and what in my hand evil?

І далі сказав: Нащо то пан мій ганяється за своїм рабом? Бо що я зробив, і яке зло в моїй руці?

19 A nd, now, let, I pray thee, my lord the king hear the words of his servant: if Jehovah hath moved thee against me, let Him accept a present; and if the sons of men -- cursed they before Jehovah, for they have cast me out to-day from being admitted into the inheritance of Jehovah, saying, Go, serve other gods.

А тепер нехай пан мій, цар, послухає слів свого раба. Якщо Господь намовив тебе проти мене, то нехай це станеться запашною жертвою, а якщо людські сини, прокляті вони перед Господнім лицем, бо вони відігнали мене сьогодні, щоб я не належав до Господнього спадку, говорячи: Іди, служи іншим богам!

20 ` And now, let not my blood fall to the earth over-against the face of Jehovah, for the king of Israel hath come out to seek one flea, as pursueth the partridge in mountains.'

А тепер нехай не проллється моя кров на землю перед Господнім лицем, бо вийшов Ізраїлів цар шукати однієї блохи, як женуть куропатву в горах!

21 A nd Saul saith, `I have sinned; turn back, my son David, for I do evil to thee no more, because that my soul hath been precious in thine eyes this day; lo, I have acted foolishly, and do err very greatly.'

І сказав Саул: Прогрішив я! Вернися, сину мій, Давиде, бо не вчиню вже тобі зла за те, що дороге було моє життя в очах твоїх цього дня. Оце був я нерозумний, і дуже багато помилявся.

22 A nd David answereth and saith, `Lo, the king's spear; and let one of the young men pass over, and receive it;

А Давид відповів та й сказав: Ось царів спис, і нехай прийде один із слуг, і нехай його візьме.

23 a nd Jehovah doth turn back to each his righteousness and his faithfulness, in that Jehovah hath given thee to-day into hand, and I have not been willing to put forth my hand against the anointed of Jehovah,

А Господь відплатить кожному за його справедливість та правду його, що Господь дав тебе сьогодні в руку мою, та я не хотів підіймати своєї руки на Господнього помазанця.

24 a nd lo, as thy soul hath been great this day in mine eyes, so is my soul great in the eyes of Jehovah, and He doth deliver me out of all distress.'

І ось, яке велике було життя твоє цього дня в очах моїх, таке велике нехай буде моє життя в очах Господа, і нехай Він урятує мене від усякого утиску!

25 A nd Saul saith unto David, `Blessed thou, my son David, also working thou dost work, and also prevailing thou dost prevail.' And David goeth on his way, and Saul hath turned back to his place.

І сказав Саул до Давида: Благословенний ти, сину мій Давиде! І ти дійсно зробиш, і дійсно зможеш ти! І пішов Давид на свою дорогу, а Саул вернувся на своє місце.
