1 A nd the men of Ephraim say unto him, `What this thing thou hast done to us -- not to call for us when thou didst go to fight with Midian?' and they strive with him severely;

І сказали йому мужі Єфремові: Що це за річ зробив ти нам, що не покликав нас, коли йшов воювати з Мідіяном? І вони сильно сперечалися з ним.

2 a nd he saith unto them, `What have I done now like you? are not the gleanings of Ephraim better than the harvest of Abi-Ezer?

І сказав він до них: Що я зробив тепер таке, як ви? Чи не ліпше пізні виноградини Єфремові від авіезерового винобрання?

3 I nto your hand hath God given the heads of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb; and what have I been able to do like you?' Then their temper desisted from off him in his speaking this thing.

У вашу руку Бог дав мідіянітянських князів, Орева та Зеева, і що міг я зробити, як ви? Тоді заспокоївся їхній дух проти нього, як він сказав оце слово.

4 A nd Gideon cometh in unto the Jordan, passing over, he and the three hundred men who with him -- wearied, and pursuing,

І прийшов Гедеон до Йордану, і перейшов він та три сотні мужів, що з ним, змучені в погоні.

5 a nd he saith to the men of Succoth, `Give, I pray you, cakes of bread to the people who at my feet, for they wearied, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna kings of Midian.'

І сказав він до людей Суккоту: Дайте но буханців хліба народові, що за мною, бо вони змучені, а я женуся за Зевахом та Цалмунною, царями мідіянітянськими.

6 A nd the heads of Succoth say, `Is the hand of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thy hand, that we give to thy host bread?'

І сказали суккотські князі: Чи рука Зеваха та Цалмунна вже в твоїй руці, щоб давати хліб твоєму війську?

7 A nd Gideon saith, `Therefore -- in Jehovah's giving Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand -- I have threshed your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness, and with the threshing instruments.'

І сказав Гедеон: Тому то, коли Господь дасть у мою руку Зеваха та Цалмунну, то я буду молотити ваше тіло пустинними тернями та колючками!

8 A nd he goeth up thence Penuel, and speaketh unto them thus; and the men of Penuel answer him as the men of Succoth answered.

І пішов він звідти до Пенуїлу, і говорив до них те саме. А люди Пенуїлу відповіли йому, як відповіли люди Суккоту.

9 A nd he speaketh also to the men of Penuel, saying, `In my turning back in peace, I break down this tower.'

І він сказав також до людей Пенуїлу, говорячи: Коли я вертатимусь у мирі, розіб'ю оцю вежу.

10 A nd Zebah and Zalmunna in Karkor, and their camps with them, about fifteen thousand, all who are left of all the camp of the sons of the east; and those falling a hundred and twenty thousand men, drawing sword.

А Зевах та Цалмунна були в Каркорі, і з ними їхні табори, близько п'ятнадцяти тисяч, усі позосталі з усього табору синів Кедему. А тих, що впали, було сто й двадцять тисяч чоловіка, що витягали меча.

11 A nd Gideon goeth up the way of those who tabernacle in tents, on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and smiteth the camp, and the camp was confident;

А Гедеон пішов дорогою Шехуне-Боголіму зо сходу до Коваху й Йоґбеги. І розбив він табора, коли табір був безпечний.

12 a nd Zebab and Zalmunna flee, and he pursueth after them, and captureth the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and all the camp he hath caused to tremble.

І втікали Зевах та Цалмунна, а він гнався за ними. І він схопив обох мідіянітянських царів, Зеваха та Цалмунну, а на ввесь табір нагнав жаху.

13 A nd Gideon son of Joash turneth back from the battle, at the going up of the sun,

І вернувся Гедеон, син Йоашів, із війни з Маале-Гахересу.

14 a nd captureth a young man of the men of Succoth, and asketh him, and he describeth unto him the heads of Succoth, and its elders -- seventy and seven men.

І захопив він юнака з людей Суккоту, та й запитався його. І той написав йому ймення князів Суккоту та старших його, сімдесят і сім чоловіка.

15 A nd he cometh in unto the men of Succoth, and saith, `Lo Zebah and Zalmunna, with whom ye reproached me, saying, Is the hand of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thy hand that we give to thy men who wearied bread?'

І прийшов він до людей Суккоту та й сказав їм: Ось Зевах та Цалмунна, що ви ображали мене, говорячи: Чи рука Зеваха та Цалмунни тепер у твоїй руці, що дамо хліба твоїм змученим людям?

16 A nd he taketh the elders of the city, and the thorns of the wilderness, and the threshing instruments, and teacheth by them the men of Succoth,

І схопив він старших того міста, і пустинне терня та колючки, і побив ними суккотських людей.

17 a nd the tower of Penuel he hath broken down, and slayeth the men of the city.

А пенуїльську вежу розбив, і позабивав людей того міста.

18 A nd he saith unto Zebah and unto Zalmunna, `How -- the men whom ye slew in Tabor?' and they say, `As thou -- so they, one -- as the form of the king's sons.'

І сказав він до Зеваха та до Цалмунни: Які ті люди, що ви повбивали на Фаворі? А ті сказали: Як ти, так вони одне, мають вигляд царських синів.

19 A nd he saith, `My brethren -- sons of my mother -- they; Jehovah liveth, if ye had kept them alive -- I had not slain you.'

А він сказав: То брати мої, сини моєї матері. Як живий Господь, коли б ви були позоставили їх при житті, не повбивав би я вас!

20 A nd he saith to Jether his first-born, `Rise, slay them;' and the young man hath not drawn his sword, for he hath been afraid, for he yet a youth.

І сказав він до Єтера, свого первенця: Устань, забий їх! Та той юнак не витяг свого меча, бо боявся, бо він був ще малий.

21 A nd Zebah saith -- also Zalmunna -- `Rise thou, and fall upon us; for as the man -- his might;' and Gideon riseth, and slayeth Zebah and Zalmunna, and taketh their round ornaments which on the necks of their camels.

І сказав Зевах та Цалмунна: Устань ти, і кинься на нас, бо по чоловікові сила його. І встав Гедеон, і вбив Зеваха та Цалмунну, і забрав оздобні місяці, що були на шиях їхніх верблюдів.

22 A nd the men of Israel say unto Gideon, `Rule over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son's son, for thou hast saved us from the hand of Midian.'

І сказали Ізраїлеві мужі до Гедеона: Пануй над нами і ти, і син твій, і син твого сина, бо ти спас нас від руки Мідіяна.

23 A nd Gideon saith unto them, `I do not rule over you, nor doth my son rule over you; Jehovah doth rule over you.'

І сказав до них Гедеон: Не буду панувати над вами я, і не буде панувати над вами син мій, Господь пануватиме над вами.

24 A nd Gideon saith unto them, `Let me ask of you a petition, and give ye to me each the ring of his prey, for they have rings of gold, for they Ishmaelites.'

І сказав до них Гедеон: Попрошу від вас прохання, і дайте мені кожен носову сережку зо своєї здобичі, бо в них, мідіянітян, були золоті носові сережки, бо ізмаїльтяни вони.

25 A nd they say, `We certainly give;' and they spread out the garment, and cast thither each the ring of his prey;

І сказали вони: Дати дамо. І розтягнули одежу, і кидали туди кожен носову сережку зо своєї здобичі.

26 a nd the weight of the rings of gold which he asked is a thousand and seven hundred of gold, apart from the round ornaments, and the drops, and the purple garments, which on the kings of Midian, and apart from the chains which on the necks of their camels,

І була вага золотих носових сережок, що він просив, тисяча й сімсот шеклів золота, крім оздобних місяців, і сережок, і пурпурових шат, що були на мідіянітянських царях, і окрім нашийників, що на шиях їхніх верблюдів.

27 a nd Gideon maketh it into an ephod, and setteth it up in his city, in Ophrah, and all Israel go a-whoring after it there, and it is to Gideon and to his house for a snare.

А Гедеон зробив із того ефода, і поставив його у своєму місті, в Офрі. І за ним чинив там перелюб увесь Ізраїль, і це стало пасткою для Гедеона та для дому його.

28 A nd Midian is humbled before the sons of Israel, and have not added to lift up their head; and the land resteth forty years in the days of Gideon.

І був упокорений Мідіян перед Ізраїлевими синами, і він більш не підіймав своєї голови. І Край мав мир сорок літ за Гедеонових днів.

29 A nd Jerubbaal son of Joash goeth and dwelleth in his own house,

І пішов Еруббаал, син Йоашів, та й осівся в своїм домі.

30 a nd to Gideon there have been seventy sons, coming out of his loin, for he had many wives;

А в Гедеона було сімдесят синів, що походили зо стегон його, бо він мав багато жінок.

31 a nd his concubine, who in Shechem, hath born to him -- even she -- a son, and he appointeth his name Abimelech.

А наложниця його, що в Сихемі, породила йому сина й вона, а він назвав ім'я йому: Авімелех.

32 A nd Gideon son of Joash dieth, in a good old age, and is buried in the burying-place of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abi-Ezrite.

І помер Гедеон, син Йоашів, у добрій сивизні, і був похований у гробі Йоаша, батька свого, в Офрі авіезеровій.

33 A nd it cometh to pass, when Gideon dead, that the sons of Israel turn back and go a-whoring after the Baalim, and set over them Baal-Berith for a god;

І сталося, як помер Гедеон, то Ізраїлеві сини знову чинили перелюб із Ваалами, і поставили собі Ваал-Берита за бога.

34 a nd the sons of Israel have not remembered Jehovah their God, who is delivering them out of the hand of all their enemies round about,

І Ізраїлеві сини не пам'ятали Господа, Бога свого, що спасав їх від руки всіх їхніх навколишніх ворогів.

35 n either have they done kindness with the house of Jerubbaal -- Gideon -- according to all the good which he did with Israel.

І не зробили вони милости з домом Єруббаала-Гедеона такої, як усе те добро, яке він зробив для Ізраїля.
