1 A nd Joab son of Zeruial knoweth that the heart of the king on Absalom,

А Йоав, син Церуї, пізнав, що цареве серце прихилилося до Авесалома.

2 a nd Joab sendeth to Tekoah, and taketh thence a wise woman, and saith unto her, `Feign thyself a mourner, I pray thee, and put on, I pray thee, garments of mourning, and anoint not thyself with oil, and thou hast been as a woman these many days mourning for the dead,

І послав Йоав до Текої, і взяв звідти мудру жінку, та й сказав до неї: Удавай жалобу, і вберись у жалобні шати, і не намащуйся оливою, і будеш, як та жінка, що багато днів у жалобі за померлим.

3 a nd thou hast gone unto the king, and spoken unto him, according to this word;' and Joab putteth the words into her mouth.

І прийдеш ти до царя, та й скажеш до нього таке то слово. І Йоав поклав ці слова в її уста.

4 A nd the woman of Tekoah speaketh unto the king, and falleth on her face to the earth, and doth obeisance, and saith, `Save, O king.'

І говорила та текоїтянка до царя, і впала на обличчя своє на землю, і вклонилася та й сказала: Поможи, царю!

5 A nd the king saith to her, `What -- to thee?' and she saith, `Truly a widow woman I, and my husband dieth,

І сказав до неї цар: Що тобі? А та відказала: Та я жінка вдова, а чоловік мій помер.

6 a nd thy maid-servant hath two sons; and they strive both of them in a field, and there is no deliverer between them, and the one smiteth the other, and putteth him to death;

А в невільниці твоєї двоє синів. І посварилися вони обидва в полі, а рятівника між ними не було, і вдарив один одного, та й убив його.

7 a nd lo, the whole family hath risen against thy maid-servant, and say, Give up him who smiteth his brother, and we put him to death for the life of his brother whom he hath slain, and we destroy also the heir; and they have quenched my coal which is left -- so as not to set to my husband a name and remnant on the face of the ground.'

А ось увесь рід устав на невільницю твою та й кажуть: Видай убійника свого брата, і ми вб'ємо його за душу його брата, якого він убив, і вигубимо також спадкоємця. І погасять вони останню іскру мою, яка позосталася, щоб не лишити моєму чоловікові ані ймення, ані нащадків на поверхні землі...

8 A nd the king saith unto the woman, `Go to thine house, and I give charge concerning thee.'

І сказав цар до тієї жінки: Іди до свого дому, а я накажу про тебе.

9 A nd the woman of Tekoah saith unto the king, `On me, my lord, O king, the iniquity, and on the house of my father; and the king and his throne innocent.'

І сказала та текоїтянка до царя: На мене, пане мій царю, той гріх, та на дім мого батька, а цар та трон його невинні.

10 A nd the king saith, `He who speaketh unto thee, and thou hast brought him unto me, then he doth not add any more to come against thee.'

І сказав цар: Того, хто буде говорити на тебе, приведеш його до мене, і він більш уже не займе тебе.

11 A nd she saith, `Let, I pray thee, the king remember by Jehovah thy God, that the redeemer of blood add not to destroy, and they destroy not my son;' and he saith, `Jehovah liveth; if there doth fall of the hair of thy son to the earth.'

Та вона відказала: Нехай згадає цар Господа, Бога свого, щоб не помножити на згубу месника за кров та щоб вони не погубили мого сина. А він відказав: Як живий Господь, не впаде на землю й волосина сина твого!

12 A nd the woman saith, `Let, I pray thee, thy maid-servant speak unto my lord the king a word;' and he saith, `Speak.'

І сказала та жінка: Нехай но невільниця твоя скаже слово до свого пана царя! А він відказав: Говори!

13 A nd the woman saith, `And why hast thou thought thus concerning the people of God? yea, the king is speaking this thing as a guilty one, in that the king hath not brought back his outcast;

І сказала та жінка: А чому ти так думаєш проти Божого народу? Бо цар, коли сказав таке слово, сам себе обвинуватив, бо цар не вертає свого вигнанця.

14 f or we do surely die, and as water which is running down to the earth, which is not gathered, and God doth not accept a person, and hath devised devices in that the outcast is not outcast by Him.

Бо ми конче помремо, і ми як та вода, вилита на землю, що її не зібрати. Та Бог не знищить душі, і Він задумав не відвернути від Себе відігнаного.

15 ` And now that I have come to speak unto the king my lord this word, because the people made me afraid, and thy maid-servant saith, Let me speak, I pray thee, unto the king; it may be the king doth do the word of his handmaid,

І оце тепер прийшла я сказати панові моєму цареві оцю справу, бо той народ настрашив мене. І сказала твоя невільниця: Нехай скажу я цареві, може виконає цар слово своєї невільниці.

16 f or the king doth hearken to deliver his handmaid out of the paw of the man to destroy me and my son together out of the inheritance of God,

Бо цар вислухає, щоб урятувати свою невільницю з руки того чоловіка, що хоче вигубити мене та мого сина разом із Божого спадку.

17 a nd thy maid-servant saith, Let, I pray thee, the word of my lord the king be for ease; for as a messenger of God so my lord the king, to understand the good and the evil; and Jehovah thy God is with thee.'

І сказала твоя невільниця: Нехай станеться слово мого пана царя на втіху мені, бо мій пан цар як Ангол Божий, і розуміє добре та зле. А Господь, Бог твій, буде з тобою!

18 A nd the king answereth and saith unto the woman, `Do not, I pray thee, hide from me the thing that I am asking thee;' and the woman saith, `Let, I pray thee, my lord the king speak.'

А цар відповів та й сказав до тієї жінки: Не заховай передо мною нічого, про що я спитаю тебе. І сказала та жінка: Нехай же говорить пан мій цар!

19 A nd the king saith, `Is the hand of Joab with thee in all this?' And the woman answereth and saith, `Thy soul liveth, my lord, O king, none to the right or to the left from all that my lord the king hath spoken; for thy servant Joab he commanded me, and he put in the mouth of thy maid-servant all these words;

І цар сказав: Чи не Йоавова рука з тобою в усьому цьому? І відповіла та жінка та й сказала: Як жива душа моя, пане мій царю, не можна відхилитися ані праворуч, ані ліворуч від усього, що говорив мій пан цар, бо твій раб Йоав він наказав мені це, і він уклав в уста твоєї невільниці всі ці слова.

20 i n order to bring round the appearance of the thing hath thy servant Joab done this thing, and my lord wise, according to the wisdom of a messenger of God, to know all that in the land.'

Щоб змінити вигляд тієї справи, раб твій Йоав зробив оцю річ. А пан мій мудрий, як мудрий Божий Ангол, щоб знати про все, що на землі.

21 A nd the king saith unto Joab, `Lo, I pray thee, thou hast done this thing; and go, bring back the young man Absalom.'

І сказав цар до Йоава: Ось зробив ти цю річ, тож піди, поверни того юнака, Авесалома!

22 A nd Joab falleth on his face to the earth, and doth obeisance, and blesseth the king, and Joab saith, `To-day hath thy servant known that I have found grace in thine eyes, my lord, O king, in that the king hath done the word of his servant.'

І впав Йоав на обличчя своє на землю, і поклонився, та й поблагословив царя. І сказав Йоав: Сьогодні раб твій пізнав, що знайшов ласку в очах твоїх, пане мій царю, бо цар виконав прохання свого раба.

23 A nd Joab riseth and goeth to Geshur, and bringeth in Absalom to Jerusalem,

І встав Йоав і пішов до Ґешуру, і привів Авесалома до Єрусалиму.

24 a nd the king saith, `Let him turn round unto his house, and my face he doth not see.' And Absalom turneth round unto his house, and the face of the king he hath not seen.

А цар сказав: Нехай він вернеться до свого дому, але обличчя мого не побачить. І вернувся Авесалом до дому свого, та царського обличчя не бачив.

25 A nd like Absalom there was no man fair in all Israel, to praise greatly; from the sole of his foot even unto his crown there was no blemish in him;

А такого вродливого мужа, як Авесалом, не було в усьому Ізраїлі, щоб був так дуже хвалений, від стопи ноги його й аж до верху голови його не було в ньому вади.

26 a nd in his polling his head -- and it hath been at the end of year by year that he polleth, for it heavy on him, and he hath polled it -- he hath even weighed out the hair of his head -- two hundred shekels by the king's weight.

А коли він голив свою голову, а голив він щороку, бо тяжке було волосся на ньому, тому голив його то важив волосся голови своєї на двісті шеклів царської ваги.

27 A nd there are born to Absalom three sons, and one daughter, and her name Tamar; she was a woman of a fair appearance.

І народилися Авесаломові троє синів та одна дочка, а ім'я їй Тамара. Вона була жінка вродлива з вигляду.

28 A nd Absalom dwelleth in Jerusalem two years of days, and the face of the king he hath not seen;

І сидів Авесалом в Єрусалимі два роки часу, а царського обличчя не бачив.

29 a nd Absalom sendeth unto Joab, to send him unto the king, and he hath not been willing to come unto him; and he sendeth again a second time, and he hath not been willing to come.

І послав Авесалом до Йоава, щоб послати його до царя, та він не хотів прийти до нього. І послав він іще другий раз, та той не хотів прийти.

30 A nd he saith unto his servants, `See, the portion of Joab by the side of mine, and he hath barley there; go, and burn it with fire;' and the servants of Absalom burn the portion with fire.

І сказав він до своїх слуг: Погляньте на Йоавову ділянку поля, що поруч мого, а в нього там ячмінь, ідіть і підпаліть його огнем. І Авесаломові слуги підпалили ту ділянку поля огнем.

31 A nd Joab riseth and cometh unto Absalom in the house, and saith unto him, `Why have thy servants burned the portion that I have with fire?'

Тоді Йоав устав і прийшов до Авесалома до дому, та й сказав йому: Нащо слуги твої підпалили огнем ту мою ділянку поля?

32 A nd Absalom saith unto Joab, `Lo, I sent unto thee, saying, Come hither, and I send thee unto the king to say, Why have I come in from Geshur? -- good for me while I there -- and now, let me see the king's face, and if there is in me iniquity then thou hast put me to death.'

І сказав Авесалом до Йоава: Я ж посилав до тебе, говорячи: Прийди сюди, і нехай я пошлю тебе до царя сказати: Чого я прийшов із Ґешуру? Добре було б мені ще лишатися там. А тепер нехай я побачу царське обличчя, а якщо є на мені гріх, то нехай уб'є мене...

33 A nd Joab cometh unto the king, and declareth to him, and he calleth unto Absalom, and he cometh unto the king, and boweth himself to him, on his face, to the earth, before the king, and the king giveth a kiss to Absalom.

І прийшов Йоав до царя, і розповів йому те. І покликав він Авесалома, а той прийшов до царя та й поклонився йому обличчям своїм до землі. А цар поцілував Авесалома...
