1 A nd Joab son of Zeruial knoweth that the heart of the king on Absalom,

Ioab, fiul Ţeruiei, şi-a dat seama că regelui îi era dor de Absalom.

2 a nd Joab sendeth to Tekoah, and taketh thence a wise woman, and saith unto her, `Feign thyself a mourner, I pray thee, and put on, I pray thee, garments of mourning, and anoint not thyself with oil, and thou hast been as a woman these many days mourning for the dead,

A trimis pe cineva la Tekoa şi a adus de acolo o femeie înţeleaptă. I-a zis femeii: „Prefă-te că eşti în doliu: îmbracă-te în haine de doliu şi nu te unge cu ulei. Să arăţi ca o femeie care de multă vreme jeleşte după un mort.

3 a nd thou hast gone unto the king, and spoken unto him, according to this word;' and Joab putteth the words into her mouth.

Aşa să te duci la rege şi să-i vorbeşti cum te voi învăţa eu.“ Şi Ioab i-a făcut cunoscut femeii ce avea de spus.

4 A nd the woman of Tekoah speaketh unto the king, and falleth on her face to the earth, and doth obeisance, and saith, `Save, O king.'

Când femeia din Tekoa a ajuns la rege, a căzut cu faţa la pământ şi i s-a închinat. Ea i-a zis: – Ajută-mă, o, rege.

5 A nd the king saith to her, `What -- to thee?' and she saith, `Truly a widow woman I, and my husband dieth,

– Ce necaz ai? a întrebat-o regele. – Sunt o femeie văduvă, i-a răspuns femeia. Soţul meu a murit.

6 a nd thy maid-servant hath two sons; and they strive both of them in a field, and there is no deliverer between them, and the one smiteth the other, and putteth him to death;

Slujitoarea ta mai avea doi fii care, într-o zi, se băteau pe câmp şi nu era nimeni acolo care să-i despartă, astfel că unul l-a lovit pe celălalt şi l-a omorât.

7 a nd lo, the whole family hath risen against thy maid-servant, and say, Give up him who smiteth his brother, and we put him to death for the life of his brother whom he hath slain, and we destroy also the heir; and they have quenched my coal which is left -- so as not to set to my husband a name and remnant on the face of the ground.'

Acum, tot clanul s-a ridicat împotriva slujitoarei tale, spunându-i: „Predă-ni-l pe cel care şi-a ucis fratele, ca să-l omorâm, căci i-a luat viaţa fratelui său. Îl vom nimici şi pe moştenitor!“ Ei vor stinge astfel singurul cărbune care mi-a mai rămas, lăsându-l pe soţul meu fără nume şi fără moştenitor pe pământ.

8 A nd the king saith unto the woman, `Go to thine house, and I give charge concerning thee.'

Regele i-a răspuns femeii: – Du-te acasă. Voi da porunci cu privire la tine.

9 A nd the woman of Tekoah saith unto the king, `On me, my lord, O king, the iniquity, and on the house of my father; and the king and his throne innocent.'

– O, rege, stăpânul meu, i-a zis femeia din Tekoa regelui, asupra mea şi asupra familiei tatălui meu să cadă vina. Iar regele şi tronul său să rămână fără vină.

10 A nd the king saith, `He who speaketh unto thee, and thou hast brought him unto me, then he doth not add any more to come against thee.'

– Dacă cineva va vorbi împotriva ta, adu-l la mine şi nu se va mai atinge de tine, i-a zis regele.

11 A nd she saith, `Let, I pray thee, the king remember by Jehovah thy God, that the redeemer of blood add not to destroy, and they destroy not my son;' and he saith, `Jehovah liveth; if there doth fall of the hair of thy son to the earth.'

– Fie ca regele să-şi aducă aminte de Domnul, Dumnezeul său, pentru ca să-l împiedice pe răzbunătorul sângelui să mărească prăpădul şi să-mi ucidă fiul, l-a rugat femeia pe rege. – Viu este Domnul că nici un fir de păr din capul fiului tău nu va cădea la pământ, i-a zis regele.

12 A nd the woman saith, `Let, I pray thee, thy maid-servant speak unto my lord the king a word;' and he saith, `Speak.'

Atunci femeia i-a mai zis: – Dă voie, te rog, slujitoarei tale să-i spună ceva stăpânului meu, regele. – Vorbeşte! i-a zis regele.

13 A nd the woman saith, `And why hast thou thought thus concerning the people of God? yea, the king is speaking this thing as a guilty one, in that the king hath not brought back his outcast;

– De ce ai plănuit un astfel de lucru împotriva poporului lui Dumnezeu? Pentru că, din însăşi vorbele lui, regele se face vinovat neaducându-l înapoi pe cel pe care l-a izgonit.

14 f or we do surely die, and as water which is running down to the earth, which is not gathered, and God doth not accept a person, and hath devised devices in that the outcast is not outcast by Him.

În ceea ce ne priveşte, asemenea unor ape care cad pe pământ şi nu se mai adună, aşa vom muri cu toţii. Dumnezeu însă nu ia viaţa, ci dimpotrivă, plănuieşte căi prin care cel izgonit să se poată întoarce la El.

15 ` And now that I have come to speak unto the king my lord this word, because the people made me afraid, and thy maid-servant saith, Let me speak, I pray thee, unto the king; it may be the king doth do the word of his handmaid,

De aceea am venit să-i vorbesc stăpânului meu, regele, pentru că oamenii m-au înspăimântat. Slujitoarea ta şi-a zis: „Să-i vorbesc regelui, poate el va îndeplini cererea slujitoarei sale.

16 f or the king doth hearken to deliver his handmaid out of the paw of the man to destroy me and my son together out of the inheritance of God,

Poate că regele o va asculta şi o va scăpa pe slujitoarea sa de cei care vor s-o şteargă pe ea şi pe fiul ei din moştenirea lui Dumnezeu.“

17 a nd thy maid-servant saith, Let, I pray thee, the word of my lord the king be for ease; for as a messenger of God so my lord the king, to understand the good and the evil; and Jehovah thy God is with thee.'

Acum, slujitoarea ta spune: „Fie să-mi aducă pace cuvintele stăpânului meu, regele! Căci stăpânul meu, regele, este ca un înger al lui Dumnezeu, ştiind să înţeleagă binele şi răul. Fie ca Domnul, Dumnezeul tău, să fie cu tine!“

18 A nd the king answereth and saith unto the woman, `Do not, I pray thee, hide from me the thing that I am asking thee;' and the woman saith, `Let, I pray thee, my lord the king speak.'

Regele i-a zis femeii: – Să nu-mi tăinuieşti răspunsul la întrebarea pe care ţi-o voi pune. – Să întrebe stăpânul meu, regele, i-a răspuns femeia.

19 A nd the king saith, `Is the hand of Joab with thee in all this?' And the woman answereth and saith, `Thy soul liveth, my lord, O king, none to the right or to the left from all that my lord the king hath spoken; for thy servant Joab he commanded me, and he put in the mouth of thy maid-servant all these words;

– Oare mâna lui Ioab nu este ea cu tine în toate acestea? a întrebat-o regele. – Viu este sufletul tău, o, rege, stăpânul meu, că nimeni nu se poate abate nici la dreapta nici la stânga de la tot ceea ce a zis stăpânul meu, regele, i-a răspuns femeia. Într-adevăr, slujitorul tău, Ioab, mi-a poruncit şi tot el a pus în gura slujitoarei tale toate aceste cuvinte.

20 i n order to bring round the appearance of the thing hath thy servant Joab done this thing, and my lord wise, according to the wisdom of a messenger of God, to know all that in the land.'

Slujitorul tău, Ioab, a făcut acest lucru pentru a schimba situaţia. Stăpânul meu însă are o înţelepciune ca cea a unui înger al lui Dumnezeu, cunoscând tot ce se petrece în ţară.

21 A nd the king saith unto Joab, `Lo, I pray thee, thou hast done this thing; and go, bring back the young man Absalom.'

Regele i-a zis atunci lui Ioab: – Iată, vreau să fac lucrul acesta! Du-te deci şi adu-l pe tânărul Absalom.

22 A nd Joab falleth on his face to the earth, and doth obeisance, and blesseth the king, and Joab saith, `To-day hath thy servant known that I have found grace in thine eyes, my lord, O king, in that the king hath done the word of his servant.'

Ioab a căzut cu faţa la pământ, s-a închinat şi l-a binecuvântat pe rege. El a zis: – Astăzi slujitorul tău ştie că a găsit bunăvoinţă la stăpânul său, regele, fiindcă regele a făcut după cuvântul slujitorului său. Absalom se întoarce la Ierusalim

23 A nd Joab riseth and goeth to Geshur, and bringeth in Absalom to Jerusalem,

Ioab s-a ridicat, a plecat la Gheşur şi l-a adus înapoi pe Absalom la Ierusalim.

24 a nd the king saith, `Let him turn round unto his house, and my face he doth not see.' And Absalom turneth round unto his house, and the face of the king he hath not seen.

Dar regele a zis: „Să se ducă în casa lui şi să nu-mi vadă faţa!“ Absalom s-a întors astfel acasă la el şi nu a văzut faţa regelui.

25 A nd like Absalom there was no man fair in all Israel, to praise greatly; from the sole of his foot even unto his crown there was no blemish in him;

În tot Israelul nu era nici un om atât de vestit pentru frumuseţea lui, aşa cum era Absalom. Din creştetul capului şi până la talpa piciorului nu se găsea nici un cusur în el.

26 a nd in his polling his head -- and it hath been at the end of year by year that he polleth, for it heavy on him, and he hath polled it -- he hath even weighed out the hair of his head -- two hundred shekels by the king's weight.

Când îşi tundea părul – şi-l tundea în fiecare an căci devenea prea greu să-l poarte – acesta cântărea două sute de şecheli, potrivit greutăţii regale.

27 A nd there are born to Absalom three sons, and one daughter, and her name Tamar; she was a woman of a fair appearance.

Lui Absalom i s-au născut trei fii şi o fiică, fiică al cărei nume era Tamar; aceasta era foarte frumoasă.

28 A nd Absalom dwelleth in Jerusalem two years of days, and the face of the king he hath not seen;

Absalom a locuit doi ani în Ierusalim fără să vadă faţa regelui.

29 a nd Absalom sendeth unto Joab, to send him unto the king, and he hath not been willing to come unto him; and he sendeth again a second time, and he hath not been willing to come.

Apoi Absalom l-a chemat pe Ioab pentru a-l trimite la rege, însă acesta nu a vrut să vină. A trimis a doua oară după el, dar tot nu a vrut să vină.

30 A nd he saith unto his servants, `See, the portion of Joab by the side of mine, and he hath barley there; go, and burn it with fire;' and the servants of Absalom burn the portion with fire.

Atunci Absalom le-a zis slujitorilor săi: „Ogorul lui Ioab este aproape de al meu şi are semănat orz pe el. Mergeţi şi daţi-i foc!“ Slujitorii săi au făcut întocmai cum le poruncise.

31 A nd Joab riseth and cometh unto Absalom in the house, and saith unto him, `Why have thy servants burned the portion that I have with fire?'

Aflând acest lucru, Ioab s-a dus acasă la Absalom şi l-a întrebat: – De ce slujitorii tăi au dat foc ogorului meu?

32 A nd Absalom saith unto Joab, `Lo, I sent unto thee, saying, Come hither, and I send thee unto the king to say, Why have I come in from Geshur? -- good for me while I there -- and now, let me see the king's face, and if there is in me iniquity then thou hast put me to death.'

– Pentru că nu ai venit când te-am chemat. Am vrut să te trimit la rege să-i spui: „De ce am venit din Gheşur? Nu ar fi fost mai bine pentru mine să fi rămas acolo?“ Doresc acum să văd faţa regelui şi dacă este vreo nelegiuire în mine, atunci să mă omoare.

33 A nd Joab cometh unto the king, and declareth to him, and he calleth unto Absalom, and he cometh unto the king, and boweth himself to him, on his face, to the earth, before the king, and the king giveth a kiss to Absalom.

Ioab s-a dus la rege şi i-a spus lucrul acesta. Atunci regele l-a chemat la el pe Absalom. Acesta a venit la rege şi i s-a închinat cu faţa la pământ. Regele l-a sărutat pe Absalom.
