1 A nd the Canaanite -- king Arad -- dwelling in the south, heareth that Israel hath come the way of the Atharim, and he fighteth against Israel, and taketh of them captive.

Când regele canaanit al Aradului, care locuia în Neghev, a auzit că Israel venea pe drumul spre Atarim, a pornit la luptă împotriva lui Israel şi a luat câţiva prizonieri.

2 A nd Israel voweth a vow to Jehovah, and saith, `If Thou dost certainly give this people into my hand, then I have devoted their cities;'

Atunci Israel a făcut un jurământ Domnului şi a zis: „Dacă vei da poporul acesta în mâinile noastre, vom nimici în întregime cetăţile lor.“

3 a nd Jehovah hearkeneth to the voice of Israel, and giveth up the Canaanite, and he devoteth them and their cities, and calleth the name of the place Hormah.

Domnul a ascultat glasul lui Israel şi i-a dat pe canaaniţi în mâinile lor; i-au nimicit în întregime pe ei şi cetăţile lor. Locul acela a fost numit Horma. Şarpele din bronz

4 A nd they journey from mount Hor, the way of the Red Sea, to compass the land of Edom, and the soul of the people is short in the way,

De la muntele Hor au pornit pe drumul către Marea Roşie ca să ocolească ţara Edom; dar poporul şi-a pierdut răbdarea pe drum

5 a nd the people speak against God, and against Moses, `Why hast thou brought us up out of Egypt to die in a wilderness? for there is no bread, and there is no water, and our soul hath been weary of this light bread.'

şi a vorbit împotriva Domnului şi împotriva lui Moise: „De ce ne-aţi scos din Egipt, ca să murim în pustie? Nu mai avem nici pâine, nici apă şi sufletul nostru s-a scârbit de această mâncare mizerabilă!“

6 A nd Jehovah sendeth among the people the burning serpents, and they bite the people, and much people of Israel die;

Atunci Domnul a trimis împotriva poporului nişte şerpi veninoşi; ei i-au muşcat pe israeliţi şi mulţi din popor au murit.

7 a nd the people come in unto Moses and say, `We have sinned, for we have spoken against Jehovah, and against thee; pray unto Jehovah, and He doth turn aside from us the serpent;' and Moses prayeth in behalf of the people.

Poporul a venit la Moise şi i-a spus: „Am păcătuit, căci am vorbit împotriva Domnului şi împotriva ta. Roagă-te Domnului să alunge de la noi aceşti şerpi.“ Moise s-a rugat pentru popor.

8 A nd Jehovah saith unto Moses, `Make for thee a burning, and set it on an ensign; and it hath been, every one who is bitten and hath seen it -- he hath lived.

Domnul i-a zis lui Moise: „Fă un şarpe şi agaţă-l pe un stâlp. Oricine este muşcat şi va privi spre el, va trăi.“

9 A nd Moses maketh a serpent of brass, and setteth it on the ensign, and it hath been, if the serpent hath bitten any man, and he hath looked expectingly unto the serpent of brass -- he hath lived.

Şi astfel, Moise a făcut un şarpe din bronz şi l-a înălţat pe un stâlp. Oricine era muşcat de vreun şarpe şi privea spre şarpele din bronz trăia. Spre Moab

10 A nd the sons of Israel journey, and encamp in Oboth.

Israeliţii au plecat de acolo şi şi-au aşezat tabăra la Obot.

11 A nd they journey from Oboth, and encamp in Ije-Abarim, in the wilderness that on the front of Moab, at the rising of the sun.

Au plecat din Obot şi şi-au aşezat tabăra la Iye-Abarim, în pustia dinaintea Moabului, înspre răsăritul soarelui.

12 F rom thence they have journeyed, and encamp in the valley of Zared.

De acolo au plecat şi şi-au aşezat tabăra în valea Zered.

13 F rom thence they have journeyed, and encamp beyond Arnon, which in the wilderness which is coming out of the border of the Amorite, for Arnon the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorite;

De acolo au plecat şi şi-au aşezat tabăra dincolo de Arnon care curge prin pustie şi care iese din teritoriul amoriţilor. Arnonul indică hotarul dintre moabiţi şi amoriţi.

14 t herefore it is said in a book, `The wars of Jehovah,' -- `Waheb in Suphah, And the brooks of Arnon;

De aceea se spune în Cartea Războaielor Domnului: „... Waheb în Sufa şi uedurile; Arnonul

15 A nd the spring of the brooks, Which turned aside to the dwelling of Ar, And hath leaned to the border of Moab.'

şi albiile uedurilor care se întind înspre aşezarea Arului şi se proptesc de hotarul Moabului“.

16 A nd from thence to Beer; it the well which Jehovah said to Moses, `Gather the people, and I give to them -- water.'

De acolo au plecat spre Beer. La această fântână Domnul i-a zis lui Moise: „Adună poporul laolaltă şi Eu îi voi da apă.“

17 T hen singeth Israel this song, concerning the well -- they have answered to it:

Atunci Israel a cântat cântarea aceasta: „Țâşneşte, fântână! Cântaţi despre ea,

18 ` A well -- digged it have princes, Prepared it have nobles of the people, With the lawgiver, with their staves.' And from the wilderness to Mattanah,

despre fântâna pe care au săpat-o prinţii, pe care au săpat-o nobilii poporului, nobili cu sceptre şi toiege!“ Apoi a plecat din pustie spre Matana;

19 a nd from Mattanah to Nahaliel, and from Nahaliel to Bamoth,

din Matana la Nahaliel, de la Nahaliel la Bamot

20 a nd from Bamoth in the valley which in the field of Moab the top of Pisgah, which hath looked on the front of the wilderness.

şi de la Bamot în valea din regiunea Moabului, unde, de pe vârful muntelui Pisga se vede toată pustia. Înfrângerea lui Sihon şi Og

21 A nd Israel sendeth messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorite, saying,

Israel a trimis soli lui Sihon, regele amoriţilor, ca să-i spună:

22 ` Let me pass through thy land, we do not turn aside into a field, or into a vineyard, we do not drink waters of a well; in the king's way we go, till that we pass over thy border.'

„Lasă-mă să trec prin ţara ta! Nu ne vom împrăştia prin câmpii sau prin vii şi nu vom bea apă din fântâni; vom merge doar pe Drumul Regelui până vom traversa teritoriul tău.“

23 A nd Sihon hath not suffered Israel to pass through his border, and Sihon gathereth all his people, and cometh out to meet Israel into the wilderness, and cometh in to Jahaz, and fighteth against Israel.

Dar Sihon nu l-a lăsat pe Israel să-i traverseze teritoriul, ci şi-a adunat toţi oamenii, a ieşit la luptă împotriva lui Israel în pustie şi l-a atacat la Iahaţ.

24 A nd Israel smiteth him by the mouth of the sword, and possesseth his land from Arnon unto Jabbok -- unto the sons of Ammon; for the border of the sons of Ammon strong.

Însă Israel l-a învins, măcelărindu-l cu sabia. Apoi i-a luat în stăpânire ţara de la Arnon până la Iabok, până la hotarul cu amoniţii, căci amoniţii îşi întăriseră hotarul.

25 A nd Israel taketh all these cities, and Israel dwelleth in all the cities of the Amorite, in Heshbon, and in all its villages;

Israel a cucerit toate cetăţile amoriţilor şi a locuit în ele, inclusiv în Heşbon şi în toate satele din împrejurimile lui.

26 f or Heshbon is a city of Sihon king of the Amorite, and he hath fought against the former king of Moab, and taketh all his land out of his hand, unto Arnon;

Heşbonul era cetatea lui Sihon, regele amoriţilor, care luptase înainte cu fostul rege al moabiţilor şi îi luase acest pământ până la Arnon.

27 t herefore those using similes say -- `Enter ye Heshbon, Let the city of Sihon be built and ready,

De aceea zic poeţii: „Veniţi la Heşbon! Să fie rezidit! Să fie fortificată cetatea lui Sihon!

28 F or fire hath gone out from Heshbon, A flame from the city of Sihon, It hath consumed Ar of Moab, Owners of the high places of Arnon.

Un foc a ieşit din Heşbon, o flacără din cetatea lui Sihon; ea a mistuit Arul Moabului şi pe conducătorii înălţimilor Arnonului.

29 W o to thee, O Moab, Thou hast perished, O people of Chemosh, He hath given his sons who escape -- Also his daughters -- Into captivity, to a king of the Amorite -- Sihon!

Vai de tine, Moab! Eşti nimicit, popor al lui Chemoş! Ţi-ai risipit fiii şi ţi-ai dat fiicele sclave lui Sihon, regele amoriţilor!

30 A nd we shoot them, Perished hath Heshbon unto Dibon, And we make desolate unto Nophah, Which unto Medeba.'

Noi i-am spulberat, am distrus Heşbonul până la Dibon, am devastat până la Nofah, care se întinde până la Medeba.“

31 A nd Israel dwelleth in the land of the Amorite,

Astfel Israel a locuit în ţara amoriţilor.

32 a nd Moses sendeth to spy out Jaazer, and they capture its villages, and dispossess the Amorite who there,

După ce Moise a trimis iscoade la Iazer, israeliţii au cucerit satele din împrejurimi şi i-au izgonit pe amoriţii care locuiau acolo.

33 a nd turn and go up the way of Bashan, and Og king of Bashan cometh out to meet them, he and all his people, to battle, Edrei.

Apoi s-au întors şi au urcat pe drumul către Başan. Og, regele Başanului, le-a ieşit înainte împreună cu toţi oamenii lui ca să se lupte cu ei la Edrei.

34 A nd Jehovah saith unto Moses, `Fear him not, for into thy hand I have given him, and all his people, and his land, and thou hast done to him as thou hast done to Sihon king of the Amorite, who is dwelling in Heshbon.'

Domnul i-a zis lui Moise: „Nu te teme de el, căci l-am dat în mâna ta, cu tot cu poporul şi ţara sa. Să-i faci aşa cum i-ai făcut lui Sihon, regele amoriţilor, care locuia în Heşbon.“

35 A nd they smite him, and his sons, and all his people, until he hath not left to him a remnant, and they possess his land.

Astfel ei l-au lovit, pe el împreună cu fiii lui şi cu tot poporul lui, până ce n-a mai rămas nici un supravieţuitor. Apoi au luat în stăpânire ţara lui.
