1 A nd I have turned, and I see all the oppressions that are done under the sun, and lo, the tear of the oppressed, and they have no comforter; and at the hand of their oppressors power, and they have no comforter.

„M-am uitat apoi şi am văzut toate asupririle care se fac sub soare. Şi iată că lacrimile celor asupriţi nu aveau alinare; puterea era de partea asupritorilor lor şi nu exista scăpare pentru cei persecutaţi.

2 A nd I am praising the dead who have already died above the living who are yet alive.

Am declarat atunci că este mai bine de morţii care au murit demult, decât de cei vii care sunt încă în viaţă.

3 A nd better than both of them he who hath not yet been, in that he hath not seen the evil work that hath been done under the sun.

Dar mai bine decât pentru oricare dintre aceştia, este pentru cel care nu s-a născut încă, pentru cel ce nu a văzut încă faptele rele care sunt făcute sub soare.

4 A nd I have seen all the labour, and all the benefit of the work, because for it a man is the envy of his neighbour. Even this vanity and vexation of spirit.

Am văzut că orice osteneală şi orice îndemânare la lucru este pricina invidiei dintre un bărbat şi semenul său, iar aceasta este deşertăciune şi goană după vânt.

5 T he fool is clasping his hands, and eating his own flesh:

«Prostul îşi încrucişează mâinile şi se ruinează.

6 ` Better a handful quietness, than two handfuls labour and vexation of spirit.'

Mai bine puţin cu pace, decât de două ori mai mult cu osteneală şi goană după vânt!»

7 A nd I have turned, and I see a vain thing under the sun:

Am mai văzut o deşertăciune sub soare:

8 T here is one, and there is not a second; even son or brother he hath not, and there is no end to all his labour! His eye also is not satisfied with riches, and, `For whom am I labouring and bereaving my soul of good?' This also is vanity, it is a sad travail.

Există câte un om singur-singurel, care nu are nici fii, nici fraţi şi care se osteneşte fără încetare, dar nu se satură de avere. „Pentru cine mă ostenesc, se întreabă el, şi de ce-mi privez sufletul de la plăceri?“ Şi aceasta este o deşertăciune şi un lucru rău

9 T he two better than the one, in that they have a good reward by their labour.

Este mai bine în doi, decât de unul singur, căci doi obţin o plată mai bună pentru munca lor.

10 F or if they fall, the one raiseth up his companion, but wo to the one who falleth and there is not a second to raise him up!

Dacă unul dintre ei va cădea, celălalt îl va ridica, dar vai de cel care cade şi nu există un altul care să-l ridice!

11 A lso, if two lie down, then they have heat, but how hath one heat?

Tot astfel, dacă se culcă doi, se încălzesc, dar dacă cineva este singur, cum se poate încălzi?

12 A nd if the one strengthen himself, the two stand against him; and the threefold cord is not hastily broken.

Tot astfel, dacă pe unul singur îl împresoară cineva, doi pot să i se împotrivească, iar funia împletită în trei nu este ruptă uşor.

13 B etter is a poor and wise youth than an old and foolish king, who hath not known to be warned any more.

Mai bine tânăr sărac, dar înţelept, decât rege bătrân, însă fără minte şi care niciodată nu se lasă îndrumat,

14 F or from a house of prisoners he hath come out to reign, for even in his own kingdom he hath been poor.

căci cel dintâi poate ajunge la domnie direct din temniţă, chiar să se fi născut sărac în regatul celui din urmă.

15 I have seen all the living, who are walking under the sun, with the second youth who doth stand in his place;

Am văzut cum toţi cei vii, care umblă sub soare, l-au urmat pe tânărul care este al doilea după rege, cel care va domni după acesta.

16 t here is no end to all the people, to all who were before them; also, the latter rejoice not in him. Surely this also is vanity and vexation of spirit.

Tot poporul şi toţi cei înaintea cărora mergea el erau fără număr. Totuşi, cei de după el nu se vor mai bucura de acest tânăr. Şi aceasta este deşertăciune şi goană după vânt!»“
