1 A nd it cometh to pass, at the revolution of the year -- at the time of the going out of the messengers -- that David sendeth Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel, and they destroy the Bene-Ammon, and lay siege against Rabbah. And David is dwelling in Jerusalem,

La începutul anului, pe vremea când porneau regii la război, David l-a trimis pe Ioab, împreună cu slujitorii săi şi cu întreaga oştire a lui Israel, la război. Ei i-au nimicit pe amoniţi şi au asediat Raba. David însă rămăsese la Ierusalim.

2 a nd it cometh to pass, at evening-time, that David riseth from off his couch, and walketh up and down on the roof of the king's house, and seeth from the roof a woman bathing, and the woman of very good appearance,

Într-o seară, regele s-a sculat din patul său şi se plimba pe acoperişul palatului. De pe acoperiş a zărit o femeie foarte frumoasă care se îmbăia.

3 a nd David sendeth and inquireth about the woman, and saith, `Is not this Bath-Sheba, daughter of Eliam, wife of Uriah the Hittite?'

David a trimis pe cineva să afle cine este femeia şi i s-a spus că este Batşeba, fiica lui Eliam şi soţia hititului Urie.

4 A nd David sendeth messengers, and taketh her, and she cometh unto him, and he lieth with her -- and she is purifying herself from her uncleanness -- and she turneth back unto her house;

David a trimis nişte oameni ca s-o aducă la el. Ea a venit la el şi el s-a culcat cu ea (ea tocmai se curăţise de necurăţia ei). Apoi ea s-a întors acasă.

5 a nd the woman conceiveth, and sendeth, and declareth to David, and saith, `I conceiving.'

Femeia a rămas însărcinată şi i-a trimis vorbă lui David, zicând: „Sunt însărcinată!“

6 A nd David sendeth unto Joab, `Send unto me Uriah the Hittite,' and Joab sendeth Uriah unto David;

Atunci David i-a transmis lui Ioab: „Trimite-mi-l pe hititul Urie!“ Şi Ioab l-a trimis pe Urie la David.

7 a nd Uriah cometh unto him, and David asketh of the prosperity of Joab, and of the prosperity of the people, and of the prosperity of the war.

Când Urie a sosit la David, acesta l-a întrebat cum este Ioab, cum este oştirea şi cum se desfăşoară lupta.

8 A nd David saith to Uriah, `Go down to thy house, and wash thy feet;' and Uriah goeth out of the king's house, and there goeth out after him a gift from the king,

Apoi David i-a spus lui Urie: – Du-te acasă şi spală-ţi picioarele! Urie a ieşit din palatul regelui, iar după el a fost trimis un dar din partea regelui.

9 a nd Uriah lieth down at the opening of the king's house, with all the servants of his lord, and hath not gone down unto his house.

Urie însă nu s-a dus acasă, ci s-a culcat la intrarea în palat, alături de toţi slujitorii stăpânului său.

10 A nd they declare to David, saying, `Uriah hath not gone down unto his house;' and David saith unto Uriah, `Hast thou not come from a journey? wherefore hast thou not gone down unto thy house?'

Când i s-a spus lui David că Urie nu s-a dus acasă, David l-a întrebat pe Urie: – Oare nu vii din călătorie? De ce nu te duci acasă?

11 A nd Uriah saith unto David, `The ark, and Israel, and Judah, are abiding in booths, and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, on the face of the field are encamping; and I -- I go in unto my house to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife! -- thy life, and the life of thy soul -- if I do this thing.'

– Chivotul, cei din Israel şi cei din Iuda stau în corturi, i-a răspuns Urie, iar stăpânul meu, Ioab, şi slujitorii stăpânului meu şi-au aşezat tabăra în câmp. Cum aş putea, aşadar, să merg acasă să mănânc, să beau şi să mă culc cu soţia mea? Viu eşti tu şi viu este sufletul tău că nu voi face un asemenea lucru.

12 A nd David saith unto Uriah, `Abide in this also to-day, and to-morrow I send thee away;' and Uriah abideth in Jerusalem, on that day, and on the morrow,

David i-a zis: – Rămâi şi astăzi aici, iar mâine te voi trimite înapoi. Urie a rămas în Ierusalim în acea zi şi în ziua următoare.

13 a nd David calleth for him, and he eateth before him, and drinketh, and he causeth him to drink, and he goeth out in the evening to lie on his couch with the servants of his lord, and unto his house he hath not gone down.

David l-a invitat să mănânce şi să bea împreună cu el şi l-a îmbătat. Seara însă, în loc să meargă să se culce acasă, Urie s-a culcat în patul său, alături de slujitorii stăpânului său. David, vinovat de moartea lui Urie

14 A nd it cometh to pass in the morning, that David writeth a letter unto Joab, and sendeth by the hand of Uriah;

În dimineaţa următoare, David a scris o scrisoare adresată lui Ioab, pe care i-a trimis-o prin Urie.

15 a nd he writeth in the letter, saying, `Place ye Uriah over-against the front of the severest battle, and ye have turned back from after him, and he hath been smitten, and hath died.'

În ea a scris: „Trimiteţi-l pe Urie în linia întâi, unde lupta este mai crâncenă şi apoi retrageţi-vă de lângă el ca să fie lovit şi să moară.“

16 A nd it cometh to pass in Joab's watching of the city, that he appointeth Uriah unto the place where he knew that valiant men;

Aşadar, în timp ce asedia cetatea, Ioab l-a aşezat pe Urie într-un loc despre care ştia că este apărat de războinici viteji.

17 a nd the men of the city go out and fight with Joab, and there fall of the people, of the servants of David; and there dieth also Uriah the Hittite.

Războinicii din cetate au ieşit şi s-au luptat împotriva lui Ioab. Au murit câţiva dintre războinicii lui David şi a murit şi hititul Urie.

18 A nd Joab sendeth and declareth to David all the matters of the war,

Apoi Ioab a trimis un om la David ca să-l înştiinţeze de toate lucrurile privitoare la luptă.

19 a nd commandeth the messenger, saying, `At thy finishing all the matters of the war to speak unto the king,

A poruncit mesagerului următoarele: „Când vei termina de istorisit regelui lucrurile privitoare la luptă,

20 t hen, it hath been, if the king's fury ascend, and he hath said to thee, Wherefore did ye draw nigh unto the city to fight? did ye not know that they shoot from off the wall?

dacă regele se va mânia şi te va întreba: «De ce v-aţi luptat atât de aproape de cetate? Nu v-aţi dat seama că vor arunca săgeţi de pe zid?

21 W ho smote Abimelech son of Jerubbesheth? did not a woman cast on him a piece of a rider from the wall, and he dieth in Thebez? why drew ye nigh unto the wall? that thou hast said, Also thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead.'

Cine l-a ucis pe Abimelek, fiul lui Ierub-Beşet ? Nu o femeie care a aruncat asupra lui, de pe zid, piatra de sus a unei mori, astfel că el a murit la Tebeţ? De ce v-aţi apropiat, aşadar, de zid?» atunci să-i spui: «Slujitorul tău, hititul Urie, a murit şi el.»“

22 A nd the messenger goeth, and cometh in, and declareth to David all that with which Joab sent him,

Mesagerul a plecat şi, ajungând la David, i-a spus acestuia tot ceea ce Ioab îl trimisese să-i spună.

23 a nd the messenger saith unto David, `Surely the men have been mighty against us, and come out unto us into the field, and we are upon them unto the opening of the gate,

I-a zis: – Oamenii aceia au fost mai puternici decât noi. Au ieşit împotriva noastră în câmpie şi noi i-am respins până la intrarea porţii cetăţii,

24 a nd those shooting shoot at thy servants from off the wall, and of the servants of the king are dead, and also, thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead.

dar arcaşii au tras de pe zid asupra slujitorilor tăi şi unii dintre slujitorii regelui au murit. A murit şi slujitorul tău, hititul Urie.

25 A nd David saith unto the messenger, `Thus dost thou say unto Joab, Let not this thing be evil in thine eyes; for thus and thus doth the sword devour; strengthen thy warfare against the city, and throw it down -- and strengthen thou him.'

Atunci David i-a zis mesagerului: – Aşa să-i spui lui Ioab: „Să nu te întristeze lucrul acesta, căci sabia ucide când pe unul, când pe altul. Înteţeşte asediul asupra cetăţii şi distruge-o.“ Îmbărbătează-l în felul acesta.

26 A nd the wife of Uriah heareth that Uriah her husband dead, and lamenteth for her lord;

Când a auzit soţia lui Urie că soţul ei a murit, l-a jelit.

27 a nd the mourning passeth by, and David sendeth and gathereth her unto his house, and she is to him for a wife, and beareth to him a son; and the thing which David hath done is evil in the eyes of Jehovah.

După ce au trecut zilele de jale, David a trimis după ea şi a adus-o în palatul lui. Ea i-a devenit soţie şi i-a născut un fiu. Fapta aceasta a lui David nu a plăcut însă Domnului.
