1 A nd it came to pass, in Apollos' being in Corinth, Paul having gone through the upper parts, came to Ephesus, and having found certain disciples,

În timp ce Apolos era în Corint, Pavel a călătorit prin regiunile din interior şi a ajuns în Efes. Acolo a găsit câţiva ucenici

2 h e said unto them, `The Holy Spirit did ye receive -- having believed?' and they said unto him, `But we did not even hear whether there is any Holy Spirit;'

şi i-a întrebat: – Aţi primit voi Duhul Sfânt când aţi crezut? Ei i-au răspuns: – Dar nici n-am auzit că este un Duh Sfânt!

3 a nd he said unto them, `To what, then, were ye baptized?' and they said, `To John's baptism.'

El le-a zis: – Atunci cu ce botez aţi fost botezaţi? Ei i-au răspuns: – Cu botezul lui Ioan.

4 A nd Paul said, `John, indeed, did baptize with a baptism of reformation, saying to the people that in him who is coming after him they should believe -- that is, in the Christ -- Jesus;'

Pavel a zis: – Ioan a botezat cu botezul pocăinţei şi spunea poporului să creadă în Cel Ce vine după el, adică în Isus.

5 a nd they, having heard, were baptized -- to the name of the Lord Jesus,

Când au auzit ei aceasta, au fost botezaţi în Numele Domnului Isus.

6 a nd Paul having laid on them hands, the Holy Spirit came upon them, they were speaking also with tongues, and prophesying,

Când Pavel şi-a pus mâinile peste ei, Duhul Sfânt a venit peste ei şi au început să vorbească în limbi şi să profeţească.

7 a nd all the men were, as it were, twelve.

Erau, cu toţii, cam doisprezece bărbaţi.

8 A nd having gone into the synagogue, he was speaking boldly for three months, reasoning and persuading the things concerning the reign of God,

Apoi a intrat în sinagogă. Timp de trei luni a vorbit cu îndrăzneală, purtând discuţii şi încercând să convingă cu privire la lucrurile despre Împărăţia lui Dumnezeu.

9 a nd when certain were hardened and were disbelieving, speaking evil of the way before the multitude, having departed from them, he did separate the disciples, every day reasoning in the school of a certain Tyrannus.

Dar fiindcă unii rămâneau încăpăţânaţi şi necredincioşi şi vorbeau de rău Calea înaintea mulţimii, Pavel s-a îndepărtat de ei, luându-i cu el şi pe ucenici. Şi în fiecare zi purta discuţii în sala de prelegeri a lui Tiranus.

10 A nd this happened for two years so that all those dwelling in Asia did hear the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks,

Lucrul acesta a ţinut timp de doi ani, astfel că toţi cei ce locuiau în Asia, atât iudei, cât şi greci, au auzit Cuvântul Domnului.

11 m ighty works also -- not common -- was God working through the hands of Paul,

Şi Dumnezeu făcea minuni nemaipomenite prin mâinile lui Pavel,

12 s o that even unto the ailing were brought from his body handkerchiefs or aprons, and the sicknesses departed from them; the evil spirits also went forth from them.

aşa încât la cei bolnavi erau aduse până şi batistele sau şorţurile care îi atinseseră acestuia trupul, şi bolile îi părăseau, iar duhurile rele ieşeau din ei. Cei şapte fii ai lui Sceva

13 A nd certain of the wandering exorcist Jews, took upon to name over those having the evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, `We adjure you by Jesus, whom Paul doth preach;'

Nişte exorcişti iudei, care umblau din loc în loc, au încercat să cheme Numele Domnului Isus peste cei ce aveau duhuri rele, zicând: „În Numele lui Isus, pe Care-L predică Pavel, vă poruncesc să ieşiţi!“

14 a nd there were certain -- seven sons of Sceva, a Jew, a chief priest -- who are doing this thing;

Cei ce făceau lucrul aceasta erau şapte fii ai lui Sceva, un preot conducător iudeu.

15 a nd the evil spirit, answering, said, `Jesus I know, and Paul I am acquainted with; and ye -- who are ye?'

Dar duhul cel rău le-a răspuns: „Pe Isus Îl cunosc, şi pe Pavel îl ştiu, dar voi cine sunteţi?!“

16 A nd the man, in whom was the evil spirit, leaping upon them, and having overcome them, prevailed against them, so that naked and wounded they did flee out of that house,

Şi omul în care era duhul cel rău a sărit asupra lor, i-a biruit pe toţi şi i-a bătut în aşa fel încât au fugit din casa aceea goi şi răniţi.

17 a nd this became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, who are dwelling at Ephesus, and fear fell upon them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was being magnified,

Lucrul acesta a fost cunoscut atât de către toţi iudeii, cât şi de către toţi grecii care locuiau în Efes; şi pe toţi i-a cuprins frica, iar Numele Domnului era preamărit.

18 m any also of those who did believe were coming, confessing and declaring their acts,

Mulţi dintre cei ce crezuseră, veneau să mărturisească şi să-şi spună faptele.

19 a nd many of those who had practised the curious arts, having brought the books together, were burning before all; and they reckoned together the prices of them, and found five myriads of silverlings;

Şi mulţi dintre cei ce făcuseră vrăjitorii, şi-au adunat cărţile şi le-au ars în faţa tuturor. Au socotit preţul acestora şi l-au găsit ca fiind de cincizeci de mii de arginţi.

20 s o powerfully was the word of God increasing and prevailing.

Astfel, prin tăria Domnului, Cuvântul se răspândea şi se întărea. O mare tulburare în Efes

21 A nd when these things were fulfilled, Paul purposed in the Spirit, having gone through Macedonia and Achaia, to go on to Jerusalem, saying -- `After my being there, it behoveth me also to see Rome;'

După ce s-au petrecut aceste lucruri, Pavel şi-a pus în gând să se ducă la Ierusalim, trecând prin Macedonia şi Ahaia. El îşi zicea: „După ce voi merge acolo, trebuie să văd şi Roma!“

22 a nd having sent to Macedonia two of those ministering to him -- Timotheus and Erastus -- he himself stayed a time in Asia.

I-a trimis în Macedonia pe Timotei şi pe Erastus, doi dintre ajutoarele lui, iar el a mai rămas un timp în Asia.

23 A nd there came, at that time, not a little stir about the way,

În perioada aceea, s-a stârnit o mare tulburare cu privire la Cale.

24 f or a certain one, Demetrius by name, a worker in silver, making silver sanctuaries of Artemis, was bringing to the artificers gain not a little,

Un argintar pe nume Demetrius, făcea replici în argint ale templului lui Artemis şi aducea astfel lucrătorilor săi nu puţin câştig.

25 w hom, having brought in a crowd together, and those who did work about such things, he said, `Men, ye know that by this work we have our wealth;

El i-a strâns la un loc, împreună cu alţi lucrători de aceeaşi meserie, şi le-a zis: „Bărbaţi, ştiţi că prosperitatea noastră vine din meseria aceasta

26 a nd ye see and hear, that not only at Ephesus, but almost in all Asia, this Paul, having persuaded, did turn away a great multitude, saying, that they are not gods who are made by hands;

şi vedeţi şi auziţi că nu numai în Efes, ci aproape în toată Asia, acest Pavel a convins şi a dus în rătăcire o mare mulţime de oameni, spunând că zeii făcuţi de mâini nu sunt de fapt zei!

27 a nd not only is this department in danger for us of coming into disregard, but also, that of the great goddess Artemis the temple is to be reckoned for nothing, and also her greatness is about to be brought down, whom all Asia and the world doth worship.'

Prin urmare, există pericolul nu numai ca această muncă a noastră să ajungă de tot dispreţul, ci şi ca templul marii zeiţe Artemis să fie socotit ca o nimica şi chiar măreţia ei să fie distrusă, a ei, cea la care se închină toată Asia şi toată lumea!“

28 A nd they having heard, and having become full of wrath, were crying out, saying, `Great the Artemis of the Ephesians!'

Când au auzit ei aceste lucruri, s-au umplut de mânie şi au început să strige: „Mare este Artemis a efesenilor!“

29 a nd the whole city was filled with confusion, they rushed also with one accord into the theatre, having caught Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians, Paul's fellow-travellers.

Cetatea s-a umplut de zarvă. S-au repezit într-un singur gând spre teatru, târându-i acolo şi pe macedoneenii Gaius şi Aristarh, însoţitorii de drum ai lui Pavel.

30 A nd on Paul's purposing to enter in unto the populace, the disciples were not suffering him,

Pavel voia să vină la norod, dar ucenicii nu l-au lăsat.

31 a nd certain also of the chief men of Asia, being his friends, having sent unto him, were entreating him not to venture himself into the theatre.

Chiar şi unii dintre conducătorii provinciei Asia, care-i erau prieteni, au trimis la el să-l roage să nu se ducă la teatru.

32 S ome indeed, therefore, were calling out one thing, and some another, for the assembly was confused, and the greater part did not know for what they were come together;

Unii strigau ceva, alţii strigau altceva, căci adunarea era în confuzie, iar cei mai mulţi nici nu ştiau de ce se adunaseră.

33 a nd out of the multitude they put forward Alexander -- the Jews thrusting him forward -- and Alexander having beckoned with the hand, wished to make defence to the populace,

Unii din mulţime l-au înştiinţat pe Alexandru, pe care iudeii îl împingeau în faţă, spunându-i despre ce este vorba. Alexandru a făcut semn cu mâna, vrând să se apere înaintea norodului,

34 a nd having known that he is a Jew, one voice came out of all, for about two hours, crying, `Great the Artemis of the Ephesians!'

dar ei, recunoscându-l că este iudeu, au strigat cu toţii într-un glas, timp de aproape două ore: „Mare este Artemis a efesenilor!“

35 A nd the public clerk having quieted the multitude, saith, `Men, Ephesians, why, who is the man that doth not know that the city of the Ephesians is a devotee of the great goddess Artemis, and of that which fell down from Zeus?

Funcţionarul cetăţii a reuşit să liniştească mulţimea, zicând: „Bărbaţi ai Efesului, cine este omul acela care să nu ştie că cetatea Efes este păzitoarea templului măreţei Artemis şi a imaginii ei căzute din cer ?!

36 t hese things, then, not being to be gainsaid, it is necessary for you to be quiet, and to do nothing rashly.

Întrucât aceste lucruri sunt de necontestat, ar trebui să vă liniştiţi şi să nu faceţi nimic nesăbuit.

37 ` For ye brought these men, who are neither temple-robbers nor speaking evil of your goddess;

Căci i-aţi adus aici pe bărbaţii aceştia care nu sunt nici jefuitori ai templului şi nici blasfemiatori ai zeiţei noastre!

38 i f indeed, therefore, Demetrius and the artificers with him with any one have a matter, court are held, and there are proconsuls; let them accuse one another.

Deci, dacă într-adevăr Demetrius şi lucrătorii lui au o acuzaţie împotriva cuiva, tribunalele sunt deschise şi există proconsuli; să se acuze acolo unii pe alţii!

39 ` And if ye seek after anything concerning other matters, in the legal assembly it shall be determined;

Însă dacă vreţi ceva în plus, se va clarifica într-o adunare legală.

40 f or we are also in peril of being accused of insurrection in regard to this day, there being no occasion by which we shall be able to give an account of this concourse;'

Căci, din cauza celor întâmplate astăzi, suntem în pericol să fim acuzaţi de răscoală, deoarece nu există nici o cauză pentru această zarvă, şi noi nu putem motiva agitaţia aceasta!“

41 a nd these things having said, he dismissed the assembly.

Şi spunând aceste lucruri, a dat drumul adunării.
