1 A nd it came to pass, in Apollos' being in Corinth, Paul having gone through the upper parts, came to Ephesus, and having found certain disciples,

В то время, когда Аполлос был в Коринфе, Павел, пройдя через горные области, пришел в Эфес. Там он встретил нескольких учеников.

2 h e said unto them, `The Holy Spirit did ye receive -- having believed?' and they said unto him, `But we did not even hear whether there is any Holy Spirit;'

– Приняли ли вы Святого Духа, когда поверили? – спросил он их. – Мы даже и не слышали о том, что существует Святой Дух, – ответили те.

3 a nd he said unto them, `To what, then, were ye baptized?' and they said, `To John's baptism.'

Тогда Павел спросил: – Во что же вы были крещены? – В крещение Иоанна, – ответили они.

4 A nd Paul said, `John, indeed, did baptize with a baptism of reformation, saying to the people that in him who is coming after him they should believe -- that is, in the Christ -- Jesus;'

Павел сказал: – Крещение Иоанна было крещением покаяния. Он призывал народ верить в Того, Кто должен был прийти после него, то есть в Иисуса.

5 a nd they, having heard, were baptized -- to the name of the Lord Jesus,

Когда они услышали об этом, они приняли крещение во Имя Господа Иисуса.

6 a nd Paul having laid on them hands, the Holy Spirit came upon them, they were speaking also with tongues, and prophesying,

И когда Павел возложил на них руки, на них сошел Святой Дух. Они тогда начали говорить другими языками и пророчествовать.

7 a nd all the men were, as it were, twelve.

Всего их было около двенадцати человек.

8 A nd having gone into the synagogue, he was speaking boldly for three months, reasoning and persuading the things concerning the reign of God,

Павел три месяца смело говорил в синагоге, беседуя с людьми о Божьем Царстве, и убеждал их.

9 a nd when certain were hardened and were disbelieving, speaking evil of the way before the multitude, having departed from them, he did separate the disciples, every day reasoning in the school of a certain Tyrannus.

Некоторые из них, однако, ожесточались и отказывались верить, перед всеми браня Путь Иисуса. Тогда Павел оставил их. Он отделил учеников и ежедневно беседовал с ними в школе Тиранна.

10 A nd this happened for two years so that all those dwelling in Asia did hear the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks,

Так продолжалось два года, и все иудеи и греки, жившие в провинции Азия, слышали слово Господа.

11 m ighty works also -- not common -- was God working through the hands of Paul,

Бог совершал через Павла необыкновенные чудеса.

12 s o that even unto the ailing were brought from his body handkerchiefs or aprons, and the sicknesses departed from them; the evil spirits also went forth from them.

Больным давали прикоснуться к платкам и фартукам, к которым прежде прикасался Павел, и у них проходили болезни, и злые духи выходили из них.

13 A nd certain of the wandering exorcist Jews, took upon to name over those having the evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, `We adjure you by Jesus, whom Paul doth preach;'

Некоторые из бродячих иудейских заклинателей тоже попробовали призывать над одержимыми Имя Господа Иисуса. Они говорили: – Заклинаю вас Иисусом, Которого возвещает Павел.

14 a nd there were certain -- seven sons of Sceva, a Jew, a chief priest -- who are doing this thing;

Это делали и семь сыновей Скевы, главного священника иудеев.

15 a nd the evil spirit, answering, said, `Jesus I know, and Paul I am acquainted with; and ye -- who are ye?'

Но злой дух ответил им: – Иисуса я знаю, и Павел мне известен, а вы кто такие?

16 A nd the man, in whom was the evil spirit, leaping upon them, and having overcome them, prevailed against them, so that naked and wounded they did flee out of that house,

И человек, в котором был злой дух, набросился на них с такой силой, что одолел их всех, и они выбежали из дома голые и израненные.

17 a nd this became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, who are dwelling at Ephesus, and fear fell upon them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was being magnified,

Когда об этом узнали иудеи и греки, жившие в Эфесе, их охватил страх, и они стали относиться к Имени Господа Иисуса с большим почтением.

18 m any also of those who did believe were coming, confessing and declaring their acts,

Многие из поверивших приходили и открыто признавались в своих делах.

19 a nd many of those who had practised the curious arts, having brought the books together, were burning before all; and they reckoned together the prices of them, and found five myriads of silverlings;

А многие занимавшиеся прежде волшебством приносили свои колдовские свитки и перед всеми сжигали их. Когда подсчитали общую стоимость всех сожженных свитков, то она оказалась в пятьдесят тысяч драхм.

20 s o powerfully was the word of God increasing and prevailing.

Так слово Господне распространялось и набирало силу. Бунт в Эфесе

21 A nd when these things were fulfilled, Paul purposed in the Spirit, having gone through Macedonia and Achaia, to go on to Jerusalem, saying -- `After my being there, it behoveth me also to see Rome;'

После всего этого Павел решил отправиться в Иерусалим через Македонию и Ахаию. – После того как я побываю в Иерусалиме, мне нужно посетить и Рим, – говорил он.

22 a nd having sent to Macedonia two of those ministering to him -- Timotheus and Erastus -- he himself stayed a time in Asia.

Он послал в Македонию двух помощников, Тимофея и Эраста, а сам еще на некоторое время остался в провинции Азия.

23 A nd there came, at that time, not a little stir about the way,

В это время произошел большой мятеж из-за Пути.

24 f or a certain one, Demetrius by name, a worker in silver, making silver sanctuaries of Artemis, was bringing to the artificers gain not a little,

Человек по имени Димитрий, серебряных дел мастер, изготовлял из серебра модели храма богини Артемиды и тем самым давал местным ремесленникам возможность заработать.

25 w hom, having brought in a crowd together, and those who did work about such things, he said, `Men, ye know that by this work we have our wealth;

Он созвал их и других подобных мастеров и сказал: – Вы знаете, что эта работа дает нам хорошую прибыль.

26 a nd ye see and hear, that not only at Ephesus, but almost in all Asia, this Paul, having persuaded, did turn away a great multitude, saying, that they are not gods who are made by hands;

Но вы видите и слышите, что этот Павел убедил и ввел в заблуждение многих людей не только здесь в Эфесе, но и по всей провинции Азия. Он говорит, что боги, сделанные руками, – это вовсе не боги.

27 a nd not only is this department in danger for us of coming into disregard, but also, that of the great goddess Artemis the temple is to be reckoned for nothing, and also her greatness is about to be brought down, whom all Asia and the world doth worship.'

Это грозит не только тем, что наше ремесло потеряет свое доброе имя, но и что храм великой богини Артемиды уже ничего не будет значить. И сама богиня, которую почитает вся провинция Азия и весь мир, будет лишена божественного величия!

28 A nd they having heard, and having become full of wrath, were crying out, saying, `Great the Artemis of the Ephesians!'

Услышав это, они в ярости стали кричать: – Велика Артемида Эфесская!

29 a nd the whole city was filled with confusion, they rushed also with one accord into the theatre, having caught Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians, Paul's fellow-travellers.

Вскоре весь город пришел в движение. Люди схватили спутников Павла, македонян Гая и Аристарха, и все единодушно ринулись в театр.

30 A nd on Paul's purposing to enter in unto the populace, the disciples were not suffering him,

Павел хотел выйти к народу, но ученики ему не позволили.

31 a nd certain also of the chief men of Asia, being his friends, having sent unto him, were entreating him not to venture himself into the theatre.

Даже некоторые из представителей провинциальной власти, друзья Павла, передали ему просьбу не появляться в театре.

32 S ome indeed, therefore, were calling out one thing, and some another, for the assembly was confused, and the greater part did not know for what they were come together;

Собравшиеся были в замешательстве, потому что одни кричали одно, другие другое. Большинство же вообще не знали, зачем пришли.

33 a nd out of the multitude they put forward Alexander -- the Jews thrusting him forward -- and Alexander having beckoned with the hand, wished to make defence to the populace,

Из толпы вытолкнули вперед Александра – это сделали иудеи. Александр жестом призвал народ к тишине, чтобы сказать защитную речь.

34 a nd having known that he is a Jew, one voice came out of all, for about two hours, crying, `Great the Artemis of the Ephesians!'

Но когда все узнали, что он иудей, то стали в один голос кричать: – Велика Артемида Эфесская! И кричали около двух часов.

35 A nd the public clerk having quieted the multitude, saith, `Men, Ephesians, why, who is the man that doth not know that the city of the Ephesians is a devotee of the great goddess Artemis, and of that which fell down from Zeus?

Тогда к народу вышел один из начальников города. Он успокоил их и сказал: – Эфесяне, разве не известно всему миру, что город Эфес является хранителем храма великой Артемиды и упавшего с небес ее изображения?

36 t hese things, then, not being to be gainsaid, it is necessary for you to be quiet, and to do nothing rashly.

Это неопровержимый факт. Поэтому вы должны успокоиться и не поступать опрометчиво.

37 ` For ye brought these men, who are neither temple-robbers nor speaking evil of your goddess;

Вы привели сюда этих людей, хотя ни один из них не обокрал храма и не оскорбил нашей богини.

38 i f indeed, therefore, Demetrius and the artificers with him with any one have a matter, court are held, and there are proconsuls; let them accuse one another.

Если у Димитрия и у других мастеров на кого-либо жалоба, то у нас для этого есть суд и власти. Туда вы можете приносить обвинения друг на друга.

39 ` And if ye seek after anything concerning other matters, in the legal assembly it shall be determined;

Если у вас есть еще какие-либо вопросы, то представьте их на рассмотрение законного собрания.

40 f or we are also in peril of being accused of insurrection in regard to this day, there being no occasion by which we shall be able to give an account of this concourse;'

Есть опасность, что после сегодняшних событий нас могут обвинить в мятеже, и в таком случае нам нечем будет оправдаться.

41 a nd these things having said, he dismissed the assembly.

С этими словами он распустил собрание.
