1 A nd it cometh to pass after this, that Nahash king of the sons of Ammon dieth, and his son reigneth in his stead,

2 a nd David saith, `I do kindness with Hanun son of Nahash, for his father did with me kindness;' and David sendeth messengers to comfort him concerning his father. And the servants of David come in unto the land of the sons of Ammon, unto Hanun, to comfort him,

Давид подумал: «Я окажу Хануну, сыну Нахаша, милость, потому что его отец оказал милость мне». И Давид отправил к Хануну послов, чтобы выразить соболезнования о его отце. Когда люди Давида пришли к Хануну в землю аммонитян, чтобы сказать ему слова утешения,

3 a nd the heads of the sons of Ammon say to Hanun, `Is David honouring thy father, in thine eyes, because he hath sent to thee comforters? in order to search, and to overthrow, and to spy out, the land, have not his servants come in unto thee?'

аммонитские вожди сказали Хануну: – Неужели ты думаешь, что Давид прислал к тебе этих людей с соболезнованиями из уважения к твоему отцу? Разве не затем они пришли к тебе, чтобы высмотреть, разведать и разрушить эту землю?

4 A nd Hanun taketh the servants of David, and shaveth them, and cutteth their long robes in the midst, unto the buttocks, and sendeth them away.

Ханун схватил людей Давида, обрил их, обрезал их одежды наполовину, до ягодиц, и отослал их обратно.

5 A nd go, and declare to David concerning the men, and he sendeth to meet them -- for the men have been greatly ashamed -- and the king saith, `Dwell in Jericho till that your beard is grown, then ye have returned.'

Когда они еще были в пути, об этих людях рассказали Давиду, и он послал им навстречу людей, потому что они были сильно опозорены. Царь сказал: – Оставайтесь в Иерихоне, пока не отрастут ваши бороды, а потом возвращайтесь.

6 A nd the sons of Ammon see that they have made themselves abhorred by David, and Hanun and the sons of Ammon send a thousand talents of silver, to hire to them, from Aram-Naharaim, and from Aram-Maachah, and from Zobah, chariots and horsemen;

Когда аммонитяне поняли, что сделались ненавистными Давиду, Ханун и аммонитяне послали тысячу талантов серебра, чтобы нанять колесницы и колесничих из Арам-Нахараима, из Арам-Маахи и из Цовы.

7 a nd they hire to them two and thirty thousand chariots, and the king of Maachah and his people, and they come in and encamp before Medeba, and the sons of Ammon have been gathered out of their cities, and come in to the battle.

8 A nd David heareth, and sendeth Joab, and all the host of the mighty men,

9 a nd the sons of Ammon come out and set battle in array at the opening of the city, and the kings who have come by themselves in the field.

Аммонитяне вышли и расположились боевым порядком у входа в свой город, а пришедшие на помощь цари стояли отдельно в открытом поле.

10 A nd Joab seeth that the front of the battle hath been unto him, before and behind, and he chooseth out of all the choice in Israel, and setteth in array to meet Aram,

Когда Иоав увидел, что сражаться придется и впереди, и сзади, он отобрал лучших воинов Израиля и выстроил их против арамеев.

11 a nd the remnant of the people he hath given into the hand of Abishai his brother, and they set in array to meet the sons of Ammon.

Остальных людей он отдал под начало своего брата Авишая, и они выстроились против аммонитян.

12 A nd he saith, `If Aram be stronger than I, then thou hast been to me for salvation; and if the sons of Ammon be stronger than thou, then I have saved thee;

Иоав сказал: – Если арамеи станут одолевать меня, то ты придешь мне на помощь, а если аммонитяне станут одолевать тебя, то я приду к тебе на помощь.

13 b e strong, and we strengthen ourselves, for our people, and for the cities of our God, and Jehovah doth that which is good in His eyes.'

Будь мужествен! Будем храбро сражаться за наш народ и города нашего Бога, а Господь пусть сделает так, как Ему угодно.

14 A nd Joab draweth nigh, and the people who with him, before Aram to battle, and they flee from his face;

После этого Иоав со своими воинами вступил в сражение с арамеями, и те побежали перед ними.

15 a nd the sons of Ammon have seen that Aram hath fled, and they flee -- they also -- from the face of Abishai his brother, and go in to the city. And Joab cometh in to Jerusalem.

Когда аммонитяне увидели, что арамеи бегут, они тоже побежали от Авишая, брата Иоава, и отступили в город. А Иоав вернулся в Иерусалим.

16 A nd Aram seeth that they have been smitten before Israel, and send messengers, and bring out Aram that beyond the River, and Shophach head of the host of Hadarezer before them.

Увидев, что они разбиты израильтянами, арамеи послали гонцов за арамеями, жившими за рекой Евфратом, во главе которых был Шофах, начальник войска Ададезера.

17 A nd it is declared to David, and he gathereth all Israel, and passeth over the Jordan, and cometh in unto them, and setteth in array against them; yea, David setteth in array the battle to meet Aram, and they fight with him;

Когда об этом доложили Давиду, он собрал весь Израиль и переправился через Иордан. Он пришел к арамеям и выстроил против них своих воинов. Когда Давид атаковал арамеев,

18 a nd Aram fleeth from the face of Israel, and David slayeth of Aram seven thousand charioteers, and forty thousand footmen, and Shophach head of the host he hath put to death.

те побежали перед Израилем, и Давид перебил из них семь тысяч колесничих и сорок тысяч пеших воинов. Он убил и их военачальника войска Шофаха.

19 A nd the servants of Hadarezer see that they have been smitten before Israel, and they make peace with David and serve him, and Aram hath not been willing to help the sons of Ammon any more.

Увидев, что они разбиты Израилем, подданные Ададезера заключили с Давидом мир и покорились ему. И арамеи больше не хотели помогать аммонитянам.
