1 A nd Sarai, Abram's wife, hath not borne to him, and she hath an handmaid, an Egyptian, and her name Hagar;

Sarai, soţia lui Avram, nu-i născuse acestuia copii. Dar ea avea o sclavă egipteancă, pe care o chema Agar,

2 a nd Sarai saith unto Abram, `Lo, I pray thee, Jehovah hath restrained me from bearing, go in, I pray thee, unto my handmaid; perhaps I am built up from her;' and Abram hearkeneth to the voice of Sarai.

aşa că i-a spus lui Avram: „ Domnul m-a oprit să am copii. Intră, te rog, la sclava mea; poate voi primi copii prin ea.“ Avram a ascultat-o pe Sarai.

3 A nd Sarai, Abram's wife, taketh Hagar the Egyptian, her handmaid, at the end of the tenth year of Abram's dwelling in the land of Canaan, and giveth her to Abram her husband, to him for a wife,

Astfel, după ce Avram a locuit zece ani în Canaan, soţia sa, Sarai, a luat-o pe egipteanca Agar, sclava sa, şi i-a dat-o soţului ei, Avram, ca să-i fie soţie.

4 a nd he goeth in unto Hagar, and she conceiveth, and she seeth that she hath conceived, and her mistress is lightly esteemed in her eyes.

El a intrat la Agar, iar aceasta a rămas însărcinată; când a văzut că a rămas însărcinată, Agar a privit-o cu dispreţ pe stăpâna sa.

5 A nd Sarai saith unto Abram, `My violence for thee; I -- I have given mine handmaid into thy bosom, and she seeth that she hath conceived, and I am lightly esteemed in her eyes; Jehovah doth judge between me and thee.'

Atunci Sarai i-a spus lui Avram: – Fie ca răul care mi se face să cadă peste tine! Ţi-am dat-o în braţe pe sclava mea, iar când a descoperit că a rămas însărcinată, m-a privit cu dispreţ. Domnul să judece între mine şi tine!

6 A nd Abram saith unto Sarai, `Lo, thine handmaid in thine hand, do to her that which is good in thine eyes;' and Sarai afflicted her, and she fleeth from her presence.

Avram i-a răspuns lui Sarai: – Sclava ta este sub autoritatea ta; trateaz-o aşa cum crezi că este bine! Sarai a asuprit-o pe Agar, iar aceasta a fugit de la ea.

7 A nd a messenger of Jehovah findeth her by the fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way Shur,

Îngerul Domnului a găsit-o în pustie, lângă un izvor de apă – izvorul de lângă drumul care duce la Şur –

8 a nd he saith, `Hagar, Sarai's handmaid, whence hast thou come, and whither dost thou go?' and she saith, `From the presence of Sarai, my mistress, I am fleeing.'

şi a întrebat-o: – Agar, sclava lui Sarai, de unde vii şi unde mergi? – Fug de stăpâna mea, Sarai, a răspuns ea.

9 A nd the messenger of Jehovah saith to her, `Turn back unto thy mistress, and humble thyself under her hands;'

Îngerul Domnului i-a zis: – Întoarce-te la stăpâna ta şi supune-i-te.

10 a nd the messenger of Jehovah saith to her, `Multiplying I multiply thy seed, and it is not numbered from multitude;'

Îi voi înmulţi atât de mult pe urmaşii tăi, încât acea mulţime nu va putea fi numărată, a adăugat Îngerul Domnului.

11 a nd the messenger of Jehovah saith to her, `Behold thou conceiving, and bearing a son, and hast called his name Ishmael, for Jehovah hath hearkened unto thine affliction;

Îngerul Domnului i-a mai spus: – Iată că eşti însărcinată şi vei naşte un fiu. Îi vei pune numele Ismael, pentru că Domnul a auzit despre asuprirea ta.

12 a nd he is a wild-ass man, his hand against every one, and every one's hand against him -- and before the face of all his brethren he dwelleth.'

El va fi ca un măgar sălbatic; va fi împotriva tuturor oamenilor, şi toţi oamenii vor fi împotriva lui; va locui separat de toţi fraţii săi.

13 A nd she calleth the name of Jehovah who is speaking unto her, `Thou, O God, my beholder;' for she said, `Even here have I looked behind my beholder?'

Agar L-a numit pe Domnul Care i-a vorbit: „Dumnezeul Care mă vede“, zicându-şi: „L-am văzut într-adevăr aici pe Cel Care mă vede.“

14 t herefore hath one called the well, `The well of the Living One, my beholder;' lo, between Kadesh and Bered.

De aceea fântâna a fost numită Beer Lahai-Roi; ea se află între Kadeş şi Bered.

15 A nd Hagar beareth to Abram a son; and Abram calleth the name of his son, whom Hagar hath borne, Ishmael;

Agar i-a născut lui Avram un fiu, iar Avram i-a pus numele Ismael.

16 a nd Abram a son of eighty and six years in Hagar's bearing Ishmael to Abram.

Avram avea optzeci şi şase de ani când Agar i l-a născut pe Ismael.
