1 M any teachers become not, my brethren, having known that greater judgment we shall receive,

Fraţii mei, să nu fiţi mulţi învăţători, pentru că ştiţi că vom primi o judecată mai aspră!

2 f or we all make many stumbles; if any one in word doth not stumble, this one a perfect man, able to bridle also the whole body;

Toţi greşim în multe feluri. Dacă cineva nu greşeşte în vorbire, este un om desăvârşit, capabil să-şi ţină în frâu tot trupul.

3 l o, the bits we put into the mouths of the horses for their obeying us, and their whole body we turn about;

Dacă punem zăbale în gura cailor, ca să-i facem să ne asculte, putem să le conducem tot trupul.

4 l o, also the ships, being so great, and by fierce winds being driven, are led about by a very small helm, whithersoever the impulse of the helmsman doth counsel,

Iată, chiar şi corăbiile, deşi sunt atât de mari şi sunt duse de vânturi puternice, totuşi ele sunt conduse de o cârmă foarte mică oriunde vrea cârmaciul.

5 s o also the tongue is a little member, and doth boast greatly; lo, a little fire how much wood it doth kindle!

La fel şi limba: ea este un mădular mic, dar se poate lăuda cu lucruri mari. Iată, un foc mic, ce pădure mare aprinde!

6 a nd the tongue a fire, the world of the unrighteousness, so the tongue is set in our members, which is spotting our whole body, and is setting on fire the course of nature, and is set on fire by the gehenna.

Şi limba este un foc. Limba este o lume a nedreptăţii pusă între mădularele noastre. Ea pângăreşte tot trupul şi aprinde tot cursul vieţii; şi ea însăşi este aprinsă de focul Gheenei.

7 F or every nature, both of beasts and of fowls, both of creeping things and things of the sea, is subdued, and hath been subdued, by the human nature,

Orice fel de specie de animale sălbatice, păsări, animale mici sau peşti, poate fi îmblânzită şi a fost îmblânzită de neamul omenesc,

8 a nd the tongue no one of men is able to subdue, an unruly evil, full of deadly poison,

dar nimeni nu poate îmblânzi limba unui om. Ea este un rău de nestăpânit, plin de venin aducător de moarte.

9 w ith it we do bless the God and Father, and with it we do curse the men made according to the similitude of God;

Cu ea Îl binecuvântăm pe Domnul şi Tatăl nostru şi tot cu ea îi blestemăm pe oameni, care sunt după asemănarea lui Dumnezeu.

10 o ut of the same mouth doth come forth blessing and cursing; it doth not need, my brethren, these things so to happen;

Din aceeaşi gură iese şi binecuvântarea şi blestemul. Fraţii mei, aceste lucruri n-ar trebui să fie aşa!

11 d oth the fountain out of the same opening pour forth the sweet and the bitter?

Oare din aceeaşi gură de izvor curge şi apă dulce şi apă amară ?

12 i s a fig-tree able, my brethren, olives to make? or a vine figs? so no fountain salt and sweet water to make.

Fraţii mei, poate un smochin să facă măsline sau o viţă-de-vie să facă smochine? Nici izvorul de apă sărată nu poate da apă dulce. Două feluri de înţelepciune

13 W ho wise and intelligent among you? let him shew out of the good behaviour his works in meekness of wisdom,

Cine este înţelept şi priceput între voi? Să-şi arate, prin purtarea lui bună, faptele făcute cu blândeţea înţelepciunii!

14 a nd if bitter zeal ye have, and rivalry in your heart, glory not, nor lie against the truth;

Însă dacă în inima voastră aveţi invidie, amărăciune şi ambiţie egoistă, nu vă lăudaţi cu aceasta şi nu minţiţi împotriva adevărului!

15 t his wisdom is not descending from above, but earthly, physical, demon-like,

Înţelepciunea aceasta nu vine de sus, ci este pământească, firească, demonică.

16 f or where zeal and rivalry, there is insurrection and every evil matter;

Căci acolo unde este invidie şi ambiţie egoistă, acolo va fi dezordine şi răutate de orice fel.

17 a nd the wisdom from above, first, indeed, is pure, then peaceable, gentle, easily entreated, full of kindness and good fruits, uncontentious, and unhypocritical: --

Însă înţelepciunea care vine de sus este, mai întâi, curată, apoi paşnică, blândă, ascultătoare, plină de îndurare şi de roade bune, nepărtinitoare, fără ipocrizie.

18 a nd the fruit of the righteousness in peace is sown to those making peace.

Iar rodul dreptăţii este semănat în pace de către cei ce fac pace.
