1 A nd it cometh to pass, in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, come up hath Sennacherib king of Asshur against all the fenced cities of Judah, and seizeth them.

În al paisprezecelea an al domniei regelui Ezechia, Sanherib, împăratul Asiriei, a înaintat împotriva tuturor cetăţilor fortificate ale lui Iuda şi le-a cucerit.

2 A nd the king of Asshur sendeth Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem, unto the king Hezekiah, with a heavy force, and he standeth by the conduit of the upper pool, in the highway of the fuller's field,

Împăratul Asiriei l-a trimis din Lachiş pe Rab-Şache la regele Ezechia, la Ierusalim, însoţit de o oştire puternică. El s-a oprit la canalul de apă al Iazului de Sus, pe drumul către Ogorul Spălătorului.

3 a nd go forth unto him doth Eliakim son of Hilkiah, who over the house, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah son of Asaph, the remembrancer.

Eliachim, fiul lui Hilchia, administratorul palatului, scribul Şebna şi cronicarul Ioah, fiul lui Asaf, s-au dus la el.

4 A nd Rabshakeh saith unto them, `Say ye, I pray you, unto Hezekiah, `Thus said the great king, the king of Asshur, What this confidence in which thou hast confided?

Rab-Şache le-a zis: – Spuneţi-i lui Ezechia: „Aşa vorbeşte marele împărat, împăratul Asiriei: «Pe ce se bazează această încredere a ta?

5 I have said: Only, a word of the lips! counsel and might for battle: now, on whom hast thou trusted, that thou hast rebelled against me?

Tu spui că ai strategie şi putere pentru război, dar acestea sunt doar nişte vorbe goale. În cine deci te încrezi tu acum de te-ai răsculat împotriva mea?

6 ` Lo, thou hast trusted on the staff of this broken reed -- on Egypt -- which a man leaneth on, and it hath gone into his hand, and pierced it -- so Pharaoh king of Egypt to all those trusting on him.

Iată că te încrezi în Egipt, în acel toiag de trestie frântă, care străpunge şi răneşte mâna oricui se sprijină pe ea. Aşa este Faraon, monarhul Egiptului, pentru toţi cei ce se încred în el.

7 ` And dost thou say unto me, Unto Jehovah our God we have trusted? is it not He, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath turned aside, and saith to Judah and to Jerusalem, Before this altar ye do bow yourselves?

Dacă îmi vei spune: ‘Noi ne încredem în Domnul, Dumnezeul nostru!’, oare nu este El Acela ale Cărui înălţimi şi altare le-a îndepărtat Ezechia, zicând lui Iuda şi Ierusalimului: ‘Să vă închinaţi înaintea acestui altar!’»?

8 ` And now, negotiate, I pray thee, with my lord the king of Asshur, and I give to thee two thousand horses, if thou art able to put for thee riders on them.

Vino acum şi fă o înţelegere cu stăpânul meu, împăratul Asiriei: eu îţi voi da două mii de cai, dacă tu vei putea găsi călăreţi pentru ei.

9 A nd how dost thou turn back the face of one captain of the least of the servants of my lord, and dost trust for thee on Egypt, for chariot and for horsemen?

Şi cum vei putea îndepărta măcar o singură căpetenie dintre cei mai neînsemnaţi slujitori ai stăpânului meu, când tu te bazezi pe Egipt pentru care şi călăreţi?

10 A nd now, without Jehovah have I come up against this land to destroy it? Jehovah said unto me, Go up unto this land, and thou hast destroyed it.'

Mai mult, am înaintat eu oare fără Domnul împotriva acestei ţări ca s-o distrug? Domnul Însuşi mi-a zis: «Înaintează împotriva acestei ţări şi distruge-o!»“

11 A nd Eliakim saith -- and Shebna and Joah -- unto Rabshakeh, `Speak, we pray thee, unto thy servants Aramaean, for we are understanding; and do not speak unto us Jewish, in the ears of the people who on the wall.'

Atunci Eliachim, Şebna şi Ioah i-au răspuns lui Rab-Şache: – Vorbeşte, te rugăm, slujitorilor tăi în aramaică, pentru că o înţelegem, şi nu ne vorbi în limba iudaică, în auzul poporului care este pe zid!

12 A nd Rabshakeh saith, `Unto thy lord, and unto thee, hath my lord sent me to speak these words? is it not for the men -- those sitting on the wall to eat their own dung and to drink their own water with you?'

Dar Rab-Şache le- a zis: – Oare, stăpânului vostru şi vouă, m-a trimis stăpânul meu să spun aceste cuvinte? Oare nu m-a trimis la oamenii aceştia, care stau pe zid şi care, asemenea vouă, vor trebui să-şi mănânce propriile murdării şi să-şi bea propriul ud?

13 A nd Rabshakeh standeth and calleth with a great voice Jewish, and saith, `Hear ye the words of the great king, the king of Asshur:

Atunci Rab-Şache s-a ridicat şi a strigat tare în limba iudaică, astfel: – Ascultaţi cuvintele marelui împărat, împăratul Asiriei!

14 T hus said the king, Let not Hezekiah lift you up, for he is not able to deliver you;

Aşa vorbeşte împăratul: „Nu-l lăsaţi pe Ezechia să vă amăgească, pentru că el nu va putea să vă izbăvească.

15 a nd let not Hezekiah make you trust unto Jehovah, saying, Jehovah doth certainly deliver us, this city is not given into the hand of the king of Asshur.

Nu-l lăsaţi pe Ezechia să vă convingă să vă încredeţi în Domnul, zicându-vă: «Cu siguranţă, Domnul ne va izbăvi; cetatea aceasta nu va fi dată în mâinile împăratului Asiriei!»

16 ` Do not hearken unto Hezekiah, for thus said the king of Asshur, Make ye with me a blessing, and come out unto me, and eat ye each of his vine, and each of his fig-tree, and drink ye each the waters of his own well,

Nu-l ascultaţi pe Ezechia, căci aşa vorbeşte împăratul Asiriei: «Faceţi pace cu mine şi veniţi afară la mine. Atunci fiecare dintre voi va mânca din via lui şi din smochinul lui şi va bea apă din fântâna lui,

17 t ill my coming in, and I have taken you unto a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards;

până voi veni şi vă voi lua într-o ţară ca a voastră, o ţară cu belşug de grâne şi de vin, de pâine şi de vii.»

18 l est Hezekiah doth persuade you, saying, Jehovah doth deliver us. `Have the gods of the nations delivered each his land out of the hand of the king of Asshur?

Nu-l lăsaţi pe Ezechia să vă îndrume greşit, pretinzând că Domnul vă va izbăvi! Şi-a izbăvit vreunul dintre zeii neamurilor ţara din mâinile împăratului Asiriei?

19 W here the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where the gods of Sepharvaim, that they have delivered Samaria out of my hand?

Unde sunt zeii Hamatului şi ai Arpadului? Unde sunt zeii Sefarvayimului? Au putut ei salva Samaria din mâna mea?

20 W ho among all the gods of these lands they who have delivered their land out of my hand, that Jehovah doth deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?'

Care dintre toţi zeii acestor ţări şi-au izbăvit ţara din mâna mea? Prin urmare, cum ar putea Domnul să izbăvească Ierusalimul din mâna mea?“

21 A nd they keep silent, and have not answered him a word, for a command of the king is, saying, `Do not answer him.'

Dar poporul tăcea şi nu i-a răspuns nici un cuvânt, căci porunca regelui era să nu-i răspundă.

22 A nd Eliakim son of Hilkiah, who over the house, cometh in, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah son of Asaph, the remembrancer, unto Hezekiah with rent garments, and they declare to him the words of Rabshakeh.

Atunci Eliachim, fiul lui Hilchia, administratorul palatului, secretarul Şebna şi cronicarul Ioah, fiul lui Asaf, au venit la Ezechia cu hainele rupte şi i-au spus cuvintele lui Rab-Şache.
