1 A nd the days are many, and the word of Jehovah hath been unto Elijah in the third year, saying, `Go, appear unto Ahab, and I give rain on the face of the ground;'

Au trecut multe zile, iar Domnul i-a vorbit lui Ilie în al treilea an astfel: „Du-te şi înfăţişează-te înaintea lui Ahab, căci voi trimite ploaie pe pământ.“

2 a nd Elijah goeth to appear unto Ahab. And the famine is severe in Samaria,

Ilie s-a dus să se înfăţişeze înaintea lui Ahab. În Samaria era foamete mare.

3 a nd Ahab calleth unto Obadiah, who over the house -- and Obadiah hath been fearing Jehovah greatly,

Ahab l-a chemat pe Obadia, cel care răspundea de palat. Obadia se temea mult de Domnul,

4 a nd it cometh to pass, in Jezebel's cutting off the prophets of Jehovah, that Obadiah taketh a hundred prophets, and hideth them, fifty men in a cave, and hath sustained them with bread and water --

iar când Izabela i-a omorât pe profeţii Domnului, Obadia a luat o sută de profeţi, a ascuns câte cincizeci în câte o peşteră şi i-a hrănit cu pâine şi cu apă.

5 a nd Ahab saith unto Obadiah, `Go through the land, unto all fountains of waters, and unto all the brooks, if so be we find hay, and keep alive horse and mule, and do not cut off any of the cattle.'

Ahab i-a zis lui Obadia: „Du-te prin ţară, pe la toate izvoarele de apă şi pe la toate uedurile! Poate că vom găsi iarbă ca să păstrăm caii şi catârii în viaţă, astfel încât să nu trebuiască să omorâm nici unul dintre animale.“

6 A nd they apportion to themselves the land, to pass over into it; Ahab hath gone in one way by himself, and Obadiah hath gone in another way by himself;

Apoi şi-au împărţit între ei teritoriul pe care urmau să-l străbată: Ahab a plecat singur pe un drum, iar Obadia a plecat singur pe un alt drum.

7 a nd Obadiah in the way, and lo, Elijah -- to meet him; and he discerneth him, and falleth on his face, and saith, `Art thou he -- my lord Elijah?'

În timp ce era pe drum, Obadia s-a întâlnit cu Ilie. El l-a recunoscut, a căzut cu faţa la pământ şi l-a întrebat: – Tu eşti, stăpânul meu Ilie?

8 A nd he saith to him, `I; go, say to thy lord, Lo, Elijah.'

– Eu sunt, i-a răspuns el. Du-te şi spune-i stăpânului tău că a venit Ilie!

9 A nd he saith, `What have I sinned, that thou art giving thy servant into the hand of Ahab -- to put me to death?

– Cu ce am păcătuit, a întrebat Obadia, de-l dai pe slujitorul tău pe mâna lui Ahab ca să fie omorât?

10 J ehovah thy God liveth, if there is a nation and kingdom whither my lord hath not sent to seek thee; and they said, He is not, then he caused the kingdom and the nation to swear, that it doth not find thee;

Viu este Domnul, Dumnezeul tău, că n-a rămas nici un neam şi nici un regat unde stăpânul meu să nu fi trimis să te caute; iar când spuneau că nu eşti acolo, punea acel regat sau acel neam să jure că nu te-a găsit.

11 a nd now, thou art saying, Go, say to thy lord, Lo, Elijah;

Şi tu-mi ceri să merg şi să-i spun stăpânului meu că a venit Ilie.

12 a nd it hath been, I go from thee, and the Spirit of Jehovah doth lift thee up, whither I know not, and I have come to declare to Ahab, and he doth not find thee, and he hath slain me; and thy servant is fearing Jehovah from my youth.

Ştiu eu oare unde te va duce Duhul Domnului după ce mă voi despărţi de tine? Astfel, dacă mă duc şi-i spun lui Ahab, iar el nu te va găsi, mă va omorî; însă slujitorul tău se teme de Domnul din tinereţea lui.

13 ` Hath it not been declared to my lord that which I have done in Jezebel's slaying the prophets of Jehovah, that I hide of the prophets of Jehovah a hundred men, fifty by fifty in a cave, and sustained them with bread and water?

Nu i s-a spus stăpânului meu ce am făcut când Izabela îi omora pe profeţii Domnului ? Am ascuns o sută dintre profeţii Domnului, câte cincizeci în câte o peşteră, şi i-am hrănit cu pâine şi cu apă.

14 a nd now thou art saying, Go, say to my lord, Lo, Elijah -- and he hath slain me!'

Iar tu-mi ceri să merg şi să-i spun stăpânului meu că a venit Ilie. Mă va omorî!

15 A nd Elijah saith, `Jehovah of Hosts liveth, before whom I have stood, surely to-day I appear unto him.'

– Viu este Domnul Oştirilor, Căruia Îi slujesc, i-a spus Ilie, că astăzi mă voi înfăţişa înaintea lui Ahab.

16 A nd Obadiah goeth to meet Ahab, and declareth to him, and Ahab goeth to meet Elijah,

Obadia a pornit să-l întâmpine pe Ahab şi să-l înştiinţeze. Apoi Ahab s-a dus să-l întâlnească pe Ilie.

17 a nd it cometh to pass at Ahab's seeing Elijah, that Ahab saith unto him, `Art thou he -- the troubler of Israel?'

Când Ahab l-a văzut pe Ilie, i-a zis: – Tu eşti acela, cel care-l nenoroceşti pe Israel?

18 A nd he saith, `I have not troubled Israel, but thou and the house of thy father, in your forsaking the commands of Jehovah, and thou goest after the Baalim;

– Nu eu l-am nenorocit pe Israel, i-a răspuns Ilie, ci tu şi familia tatălui tău, prin faptul că aţi părăsit poruncile Domnului şi l-aţi urmat pe Baal.

19 a nd now, send, gather unto me all Israel, unto the mount of Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the shrine, four hundred -- eating at the table of Jezebel.'

Strânge acum pe tot Israelul la mine, pe muntele Carmel, pe cei patru sute cincizeci de profeţi ai lui Baal şi pe cei patru sute de profeţi ai Aşerei, care mănâncă la masa Izabelei.

20 A nd Ahab sendeth among all the sons of Israel, and gathereth the prophets unto the mount of Carmel;

Ahab a trimis după toţi israeliţii şi i-a strâns pe profeţi la muntele Carmel.

21 a nd Elijah cometh nigh unto all the people, and saith, `Till when are ye leaping on the two branches? -- if Jehovah God, go after Him; and if Baal, go after him;' and the people have not answered him a word.

Atunci Ilie s-a apropiat de tot poporul şi a zis: – Până când veţi mai şovăi între două convingeri? Dacă Domnul este Dumnezeu, urmaţi-L pe El, iar dacă Baal este Dumnezeu, urmaţi-l pe acesta! Poporul nu i-a răspuns nimic.

22 A nd Elijah saith unto the people, `I -- I have been left a prophet of Jehovah -- by myself; and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty men;

Apoi Ilie a zis poporului: – Eu sunt singurul care am rămas dintre profeţii Domnului, iar profeţii lui Baal sunt în număr de patru sute cincizeci.

23 a nd let them give to us two bullocks, and they choose for themselves the one bullock, and cut it in pieces, and place on the wood, and place no fire; and I -- I prepare the other bullock, and have put on the wood, and fire I do not place; --

Să ni se dea doi tauri. Ei să-şi aleagă un taur, să-l taie în bucăţi şi să-l aşeze pe lemnele de pe altar, dar să nu-i dea foc. Iar eu voi pregăti celălalt taur şi-l voi aşeza pe lemne, dar nu-i voi da foc.

24 a nd ye have called in the name of your god, and I -- I call in the name of Jehovah, and it hath been, the god who answereth by fire -- He the God.' And all the people answer and say, `Good the word.'

Apoi, voi să chemaţi numele dumnezeului vostru, iar eu voi chema Numele Domnului. Dumnezeul care va răspunde prin foc, Acela este adevăratul Dumnezeu. – Bine, a răspuns tot poporul.

25 A nd Elijah saith to the prophets of Baal, `Choose for you the one bullock, and prepare first, for ye the multitude, and call ye in the name of your god, and place no fire.'

Ilie le-a zis profeţilor lui Baal: „Alegeţi-vă un taur şi pregătiţi-l voi mai întâi, pentru că sunteţi mai mulţi; apoi chemaţi numele dumnezeului vostru, dar să nu aprindeţi voi focul.“

26 A nd they take the bullock that gave to them, and prepare, and call in the name of Baal from the morning even till the noon, saying, `O Baal, answer us!' and there is no voice, and there is none answering; and they leap on the altar that one had made.

Ei au luat taurul dat lor şi l-au pregătit; apoi au chemat numele lui Baal de dimineaţa până la amiază, zicând: „ Baal, răspunde-ne!“ Dar nu s-a auzit nici un glas. Nimeni n-a răspuns, deşi ei săreau în jurul altarului pe care-l construiseră.

27 A nd it cometh to pass, at noon, that Elijah playeth on them, and saith, `Call with a loud voice, for he a god, for he is meditating, or pursuing, or on a journey; it may be he is asleep, an doth awake.'

La amiază, Ilie şi-a bătut joc de ei, zicând: „Strigaţi mai tare, doar este dumnezeu! Poate că meditează sau este ocupat sau se află în călătorie; poate că doarme şi se va trezi.“

28 A nd they call with a loud voice, and cut themselves, according to their ordinance, with swords and with spears, till a flowing of blood on them;

Ei au strigat mai tare şi, după obiceiul lor, şi-au făcut tăieturi cu săbiile şi cu suliţele până a început să le curgă sângele pe ei.

29 a nd it cometh to pass, at the passing by of the noon, that they feign themselves prophets till the going up of the present, and there is no voice, and there is none answering, and there is none attending.

După ce a trecut amiaza, ei şi-au continuat invocarea până când se aducea jertfa de seară, dar nu s-a auzit nici un glas, nici un răspuns, nici un semn.

30 A nd Elijah saith to all the people, `Come nigh unto me;' and all the people come nigh unto him, and he repaireth the altar of Jehovah that is broken down;

Atunci Ilie a zis întregului popor: – Apropiaţi-vă de mine! Şi tot poporul s-a apropiat de el. Apoi el a refăcut altarul Domnului, care fusese distrus.

31 a nd Elijah taketh twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, unto whom the word of Jehovah was, saying, `Israel is thy name;'

Ilie a luat douăsprezece pietre, după numărul seminţiilor urmaşilor lui Iacov, cel căruia Domnul îi vorbise zicând: „Numele tău va fi Israel!“

32 a nd he buildeth with the stones an altar, in the name of Jehovah, and maketh a trench, as about the space of two measures of seed, round about the altar.

Cu aceste pietre, el a zidit un altar în Numele Domnului. A săpat şi un şanţ în jurul altarului, în care încăpeau două măsuri de sămânţă.

33 A nd he arrangeth the wood, and cutteth in pieces the bullock, and placeth on the wood, and saith, `Fill ye four pitchers of water, and pour on the burnt-offering, and on the wood;

A aranjat lemnele, a tăiat taurul în bucăţi şi l-a aşezat pe altar, deasupra lemnelor.

34 a nd he saith, `Do a second time;' and they do a second time; and he saith, `Do a third time;' and they do a third time;

Apoi le-a zis: – Umpleţi patru ulcioare cu apă şi goliţi-le peste arderea de tot şi peste lemne! Faceţi lucrul acesta încă o dată! a zis el. Şi ei l-au făcut încă o dată. Faceţi lucrul acesta şi a treia oară! Iar ei l-au făcut şi a treia oară.

35 a nd the water goeth round about the altar, and also, the trench he hath filled with water.

Apa curgea în jurul altarului şi a umplut chiar şi şanţul.

36 A nd it cometh to pass, at the going up of the present, that Elijah the prophet cometh nigh and saith, `Jehovah, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, to-day let it be known that Thou God in Israel, and I Thy servant, that by Thy word I have done the whole of these things;

În clipa în care se aducea jertfa de seară, profetul Ilie s-a apropiat şi a zis: „ Doamne, Dumnezeul lui Avraam, Isaac şi Israel, fă să se cunoască astăzi că Tu eşti Dumnezeu în Israel, că eu sunt robul Tău şi că am făcut toate aceste lucruri după porunca Ta.

37 a nswer me, O Jehovah, answer me, and this people doth know that Thou Jehovah God; and Thou hast turned their heart backward.'

Răspunde-mi, Doamne! Răspunde-mi, ca să cunoască acest popor că Tu, Doamne, eşti Dumnezeu şi că Tu le întorci inimile spre Tine! “

38 A nd there falleth a fire of Jehovah, and consumeth the burnt-offering, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and the water that in the trench it hath licked up.

Atunci a căzut foc de la Domnul, a mistuit arderea de tot, lemnele, pietrele şi pământul şi a înghiţit şi apa care era în şanţ.

39 A nd all the people see, and fall on their faces, and say, `Jehovah, He the God, Jehovah, He the God.'

Când tot poporul a văzut acest lucru, a căzut cu faţa la pământ şi a zis: „ Domnul este Dumnezeu! Domnul este Dumnezeu!“

40 A nd Elijah saith to them, `Catch ye the prophets of Baal; let not a man escape of them;' and they catch them, and Elijah bringeth them down unto the stream Kishon, and doth slaughter them there.

– Prindeţi-i pe profeţii lui Baal! le-a zis Ilie. Nici unul dintre ei să nu scape! I-au prins, iar Ilie i-a dus la uedul Chişon şi i-a înjunghiat acolo.

41 A nd Elijah saith to Ahab, `Go up, eat and drink, because of the sound of the noise of the shower.'

Apoi Ilie i-a zis lui Ahab: – Du-te, mănâncă şi bea, căci se aude vuietul unei ploi puternice!

42 A nd Ahab goeth up to eat, and to drink, and Elijah hath gone up unto the top of Carmel, and he stretcheth himself out on the earth, and he placeth his face between his knees,

Ahab s-a dus să mănânce şi să bea, dar Ilie s-a suit pe vârful Carmelului, s-a plecat la pământ, şi-a aşezat faţa între genunchi

43 a nd saith unto his young man, `Go up, I pray thee, look attentively the way of the sea;' and he goeth up and looketh attentively, and saith, `There is nothing;' and he saith, `Turn back,' seven times.

şi i-a zis slujitorului său: – Du-te şi uită-te spre mare! El s-a dus şi s-a uitat. – Nu se vede nimic! i-a zis el. Ilie i-a zis de şapte ori să se ducă din nou.

44 A nd it cometh to pass, at the seventh, that he saith, `Lo, a little thickness as the palm of a man is coming up out of the sea.' And he saith, `Go up, say unto Ahab, `Bind -- and go down, and the shower doth not restrain thee.'

A şaptea oară, slujitorul i-a zis: – Un nor mic cât o palmă de om se ridică din mare! – Du-te, i-a zis Ilie, şi spune-i lui Ahab: „Pregăteşte-ţi carul şi coboară-te ca să nu te prindă ploaia!“

45 A nd it cometh to pass, in the meantime, that the heavens have become black -- thick clouds and wind -- and the shower is great; and Ahab rideth, and goeth to Jezreel,

Între timp cerul s-a înnegrit de nori, vântul a început să bată şi a venit o ploaie puternică. Ahab s-a urcat în car şi s-a dus la Izreel.

46 a nd the hand of Jehovah hath been on Elijah, and he girdeth up his loins, and runneth before Ahab, till thine entering Jezreel.

Mâna Domnului a venit peste Ilie, care şi-a încins mijlocul şi a alergat înaintea lui Ahab până la intrarea în Izreel.
