1 A nd he commandeth him who over his house, saying, `Fill the bags of the men food, as they are able to bear, and put the money of each in the mouth of his bag;

După aceea, Iosif i-a poruncit administratorului gospodăriei sale: „Umple sacii acestor oameni cu mâncare, atât cât pot duce şi pune argintul fiecăruia la gura sacului său.

2 a nd my cup, the silver cup, thou dost put in the mouth of the bag of the young one, and his corn-money;' and he doth according to the word of Joseph which he hath spoken.

Pune cupa mea de argint la gura sacului celui mai mic, împreună cu argintul pentru grâne.“ Administratorul a făcut aşa cum i-a poruncit Iosif.

3 T he morning is bright, and the men have been sent away, they and their asses --

Cum s-a făcut dimineaţă, oamenii au fost trimişi cu măgarii lor.

4 t hey have gone out of the city -- they have not gone far off -- and Joseph hath said to him who over his house, `Rise, pursue after the men; and thou hast overtaken them, and thou hast said unto them, Why have ye recompensed evil for good?

Ei au ieşit din cetate, dar n-au ajuns prea departe, când Iosif i-a poruncit administratorului gospodăriei sale: „Scoală-te, urmăreşte-i pe acei oameni, iar când îi vei ajunge, întreabă-i: «De ce aţi răsplătit binele cu rău?

5 I s not this that with which my lord drinketh? and he observeth diligently with it; ye have done evil that which ye have done.'

Nu este aceasta cupa din care bea stăpânul meu şi pe care o foloseşte el pentru ghicire ? Rău lucru aţi făcut.»“

6 A nd he overtaketh them, and speaketh unto them these words,

Când i-a ajuns, administratorul le-a spus aceste cuvinte.

7 a nd they say unto him, `Why doth my lord speak according to these words? far be it from thy servants to do according to this word;

– De ce spune stăpânul nostru aceste cuvinte? i-au răspuns ei. Nici gând ca slujitorii tăi să fi făcut acest lucru!

8 l o, the money which we found in the mouth of our bags we brought back unto thee from the land of Canaan, and how do we steal from the house of thy lord silver or gold?

Noi ţi-am adus înapoi din Canaan argintul pe care-l găsisem la gura sacilor noştri; cum să fi furat argint sau aur din palatul stăpânului tău?

9 w ith whomsoever of thy servants it is found, he hath died, and we also are to my lord for servants.'

Fie ca acela dintre slujitorii tăi, la care va fi găsită cupa, să moară, iar noi ceilalţi să devenim sclavii stăpânului nostru.

10 A nd he saith, `Now, also, according to your words, so it; he with whom it is found becometh my servant, and ye are acquitted;'

– Fie aşa cum aţi spus, le-a zis el; cel la care va fi găsită cupa va fi sclavul meu, dar voi ceilalţi veţi fi consideraţi nevinovaţi.

11 a nd they hasten and take down each his bag to the earth, and each openeth his bag;

Fiecare şi-a dat repede jos sacul şi l-a deschis.

12 a nd he searcheth -- at the eldest he hath begun, and at the youngest he hath completed -- and the cup is found in the bag of Benjamin;

El a căutat cupa începând cu cel mai mare şi terminând cu cel mai mic, iar aceasta a fost găsită în sacul lui Beniamin.

13 a nd they rend their garments, and each ladeth his ass, and they turn back to the city.

Atunci ei şi-au sfâşiat hainele, fiecare şi-a încărcat măgarul şi s-au întors în cetate.

14 A nd Judah -- his brethren also -- cometh in unto the house of Joseph, and he is yet there, and they fall before him to the earth;

Iuda şi fraţii săi au intrat în palatul lui Iosif, pe când el era încă acolo şi s-au plecat la pământ înaintea lui.

15 a nd Joseph saith to them, `What this deed that ye have done? have ye not known that a man like me doth diligently observe?'

Iosif i-a întrebat: – Ce înseamnă lucrul acesta pe care l-aţi făcut? Nu ştiţi că un om ca mine poate ghici?

16 A nd Judah saith, `What do we say to my lord? what do we speak? and what -- do we justify ourselves? God hath found out the iniquity of thy servants; lo, we servants to my lord, both we, and he in whose hand the cup hath been found;'

Iuda i-a răspuns: – Ce putem să-i spunem stăpânului nostru? Ce putem spune? Cum să ne dezvinovăţim? Dumnezeu a descoperit vina slujitorilor tăi; suntem sclavii stăpânului nostru, noi şi cel la care a fost găsită cupa.

17 a nd he saith, `Far be it from me to do this; the man in whose hand the cup hath been found, he becometh my servant; and ye, go ye up in peace unto your father.'

Dar el a zis: – Nici gând să fac acest lucru! Doar cel la care a fost găsită cupa va fi sclavul meu, iar voi ceilalţi mergeţi în pace la tatăl vostru.

18 A nd Judah cometh nigh unto him, and saith, `O, my lord, let thy servant speak, I pray thee, a word in the ears of my lord, and let not thine anger burn against thy servant -- for thou art as Pharaoh.

Atunci Iuda s-a apropiat de el şi i-a zis: – Stăpânul meu, te rog, dă-i voie slujitorului tău să-i spună ceva stăpânului meu şi să nu te mânii pe slujitorul tău, pentru că tu eşti ca Faraon.

19 M y lord hath asked his servants, saying, Have ye a father or brother?

Stăpânul meu i-a întrebat pe slujitorii săi, dacă avem tată şi dacă mai avem vreun alt frate.

20 a nd we say unto my lord, We have a father, an aged one, and a child of old age, a little one; and his brother died, and he is left alone of his mother, and his father hath loved him.

Noi i-am răspuns stăpânului nostru că avem un tată în vârstă, care mai are un fiu mai tânăr ce i s-a născut la bătrâneţe. Fratele său este mort, doar el a mai rămas dintre copiii mamei sale, iar tatăl său îl iubeşte.

21 ` And thou sayest unto thy servants, Bring him down unto me, and I set mine eye upon him;

Atunci tu le-ai cerut slujitorilor tăi să-l aducă la tine ca să-l vezi cu ochii tăi.

22 a nd we say unto my lord, The youth is not able to leave his father, when he hath left his father, then he hath died;

Noi i-am spus stăpânului nostru că băiatul nu poate pleca de lângă tatăl său, pentru că, dacă ar pleca, tatăl său ar muri.

23 a nd thou sayest unto thy servants, If your young brother come not down with you, ye add not to see my face.

Dar tu le-ai spus slujitorilor tăi: „Dacă fratele nostru mai mic nu vine cu voi, nu-mi veţi mai vedea faţa“.

24 ` And it cometh to pass, that we have come up unto thy servant my father, that we declare to him the words of my lord;

Când ne-am întors la slujitorul tău, tatăl meu, i-am făcut cunoscute cuvintele stăpânului nostru.

25 a nd our father saith, Turn back, buy for us a little food,

Când tatăl nostru ne-a cerut să ne întoarcem şi să mai cumpărăm nişte mâncare,

26 a nd we say, We are not able to go down; if our young brother is with us, then we have gone down; for we are not able to see the man's face, and our young brother not with us.

noi i-am răspuns: „Nu putem merge decât dacă va veni cu noi şi fratele nostru mai mic, pentru că nu putem să vedem faţa acelui om decât dacă fratele nostru mai mic este cu noi“.

27 ` And thy servant my father saith unto us, Ye -- ye have known that two did my wife bare to me,

Atunci slujitorul tău, tatăl meu, ne-a amintit ceea ce ştiam, şi anume că soţia sa i-a născut doi fii,

28 a nd the one goeth out from me, and I say, Surely he is torn -- torn! and I have not seen him since;

dintre care unul a plecat şi se crede că a fost sfâşiat de fiare, pentru că nu a mai fost văzut de atunci

29 w hen ye have taken also this from my presence, and mischief hath met him, then ye have brought down my grey hairs with evil to sheol.

şi că, dacă i l-am lua şi pe acesta şi i se va întâmpla vreo nenorocire, cu durere îi vom coborî capul încărunţit în Locuinţa Morţilor.

30 ` And now, at my coming in unto thy servant my father, and the youth not with us (and his soul is bound up in his soul),

De aceea, dacă mă voi întoarce la slujitorul tău, tatăl meu, şi băiatul nu va fi cu noi, pentru că el este ataşat de băiat,

31 t hen it hath come to pass when he seeth that the youth is not, that he hath died, and thy servants have brought down the grey hairs of thy servant our father with sorrow to sheol;

va muri când va vedea că băiatul nu este cu noi; iar slujitorii tăi vor coborî cu durere capul încărunţit al slujitorului tău, tatăl nostru, în Locuinţa Morţilor.

32 f or thy servant obtained the youth by surety from my father, saying, If I bring him not in unto thee -- then I have sinned against my father all the days.

Slujitorul tău s-a pus garant la tatăl meu pentru băiat, promiţând că dacă nu i-l voi aduce înapoi, voi fi vinovat înaintea tatălui meu toată viaţa.

33 ` And now, let thy servant, I pray thee, abide instead of the youth a servant to my lord, and the youth goeth up with his brethren,

Astfel dar dă-i voie, te rog, slujitorului tău să rămână ca sclav al stăpânului meu în locul băiatului şi dă-i voie băiatului să se întoarcă cu fraţii săi.

34 f or how do I go up unto my father, and the youth not with me? lest I look on the evil which doth find my father.'

Cum să mă întorc la tatăl meu dacă băiatul nu este cu mine? Să nu văd durerea care va veni asupra tatălui meu!
