1 A nd Jephthah the Gileadite hath been a mighty man of valour, and he son of a woman, a harlot; and Gilead begetteth Jephthah,

Ghiladitul Iefta, fiul unei prostituate, era un războinic viteaz, fiind fiul lui Ghilad.

2 a nd the wife of Gilead beareth to him sons, and the wife's sons grow up and cast out Jephthah, and say to him, `Thou dost not inherit in the house of our father; for son of another woman thou.'

Soţia lui Ghilad îi născuse fii, iar când aceştia au crescut mari, l-au izgonit pe Iefta, zicându-i: „Tu nu vei avea moştenire în familia noastră pentru că eşti fiul unei alte femei!“

3 A nd Jephthah fleeth from the face of his brethren, and dwelleth in the land of Tob; and vain men gather themselves together unto Jephthah, and they go out with him.

Iefta a plecat dinaintea fraţilor săi şi a locuit în ţara Tob. Acolo nişte bărbaţi de nimic s-au adunat pe lângă Iefta şi au început să-l însoţească.

4 A nd it cometh to pass, after a time, that the Bene-Ammon fight with Israel,

Deci, după câtva timp, amoniţii au declarat război lui Israel.

5 a nd it cometh to pass, when the Bene-Ammon have fought with Israel, that the elders of Gilead go to take Jephthah from the land of Tob;

În timp ce amoniţii începuseră lupta cu Israel, cei din sfatul bătrânilor Ghiladului s-au dus să-l aducă pe Iefta din regatul Tob.

6 a nd they say unto Jephthah, `Come, and thou hast been to us for captain, and we fight against the Bene-Ammon.'

Ei i-au zis lui Iefta: – Vino, să ne fii căpetenie ca să ne luptăm cu amoniţii!

7 A nd Jephthah saith to the elders of Gilead, `Have not ye hated me? and ye cast me out from the house of my father, and wherefore have ye come unto me now when ye are in distress?'

Dar Iefta i-a întrebat pe cei din sfatul bătrânilor Ghiladului: – Oare nu voi sunteţi aceia care m-aţi urât şi m-aţi izgonit din familia tatălui meu? De ce aţi venit la mine acum când sunteţi în primejdie?

8 a nd the elders of Gilead say unto Jephthah, `Therefore, now, we have turned back unto thee; and thou hast gone with us, and fought against the Bene-Ammon, and thou hast been to us for head -- to all the inhabitants of Gilead.'

Cei din sfatul bătrânilor Ghiladului i-au răspuns lui Iefta: – Ne întoarcem la tine pentru că am dori să vii cu noi şi să lupţi împotriva amoniţilor. După aceea, tu vei fi căpetenia noastră, a tuturor locuitorilor Ghiladului!

9 A nd Jephthah saith unto the elders of Gilead, `If ye are taking me back to fight against the Bene-Ammon, and Jehovah hath given them before me -- I, am I to you for a head?'

Iefta i-a întrebat din nou: – Dacă mă aduceţi înapoi ca să lupt împotriva amoniţilor şi Domnul îi va da în mâna mea, voi deveni eu cu adevărat căpetenia voastră?

10 A nd the elders of Gilead say unto Jephthah, `Jehovah is hearkening between us -- if according to thy word we do not so.'

Cei din sfatul bătrânilor Ghiladului i-au răspuns: – Domnul să ne judece dacă nu vom face întocmai cum ai zis!

11 A nd Jephthah goeth with the elders of Gilead, and the people set him over them for head and for captain, and Jephthah speaketh all his words before Jehovah in Mizpeh.

Iefta a plecat cu cei din sfatul bătrânilor Ghiladului şi poporul l-a pus în fruntea lui drept căpetenie şi conducător. Apoi Iefta a rostit din nou aceste cuvinte, înaintea Domnului, la Miţpa. Iefta îi învinge pe amoniţi

12 A nd Jephthah sendeth messengers unto the king of the Bene-Ammon, saying, `What -- to me and to thee, that thou hast come in unto me, to fight in my land.'

După aceea, Iefta a trimis nişte soli la regele amoniţilor ca să-i spună: – Ce ai cu mine, de ai venit să lupţi împotriva ţării mele?

13 A nd the king of the Bene-Ammon saith unto the messengers of Jephthah, `Because Israel took my land in his coming up out of Egypt, from Arnon, and unto the Jabbok, and unto the Jordan; and now, restore them in peace.'

Regele amoniţilor le-a răspuns solilor lui Iefta: – Pentru că atunci când venea din Egipt, Israel mi-a luat ţara, de la Arnon până la Iabok şi până la Iordan. Acum, înapoiază-mi-o pe cale paşnică!

14 A nd Jephthah addeth yet and sendeth messengers unto the king of the Bene-Ammon,

Iefta a trimis din nou soli regelui amoniţilor

15 a nd saith to him, `Thus said Jephthah, Israel took not the land of Moab, and the land of the Bene-Ammon,

ca să-i spună: – Aşa vorbeşte Iefta: „Nu Israel a luat ţara Moabului şi ţara amoniţilor

16 f or in their coming up out of Egypt, Israel goeth in the wilderness unto the Red Sea, and cometh in to Kadesh,

pentru că, atunci când veneau din Egipt, israeliţii au mers prin pustie până la Marea Roşie şi apoi şi-au continuat drumul până la Kadeş.

17 a nd Israel sendeth messengers unto the king of Edom, saying, Let me pass over, I pray thee, through thy land, and the king of Edom hearkened not; and also unto the king of Moab hath sent, and he hath not been willing; and Israel abideth in Kadesh,

Israel a trimis atunci soli regelui Edomului, rugându-l să-i lase să treacă prin ţara lui, dar regele Edomului nu i-a îngăduit. A mai trimis soli şi regelui Moabului, dar nici acesta nu a acceptat. Astfel, Israel a rămas la Kadeş.

18 a nd he goeth through the wilderness, and compasseth the land of Edom and the land of Moab, and cometh in at the rising of the sun of the land of Moab, and they encamp beyond Arnon, and have not come into the border of Moab, for Arnon the border of Moab.

Apoi au călătorit prin pustie, au înconjurat ţara Edomului şi ţara Moabului, au ajuns în partea de răsărit şi şi-au aşezat tabăra dincoace de Arnon. Deci nu au păşit pe hotarul Moabului, întrucât Arnon făcea parte din teritoriul Moabului.

19 ` And Israel sendeth messengers unto Sihon, king of the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and Israel saith to him, Let us pass over, we pray thee, through thy land, unto my place,

Atunci Israel a trimis soli lui Sihon, regele amoriţilor, rege al Heşbonului. Israel l-a rugat să-l lase să treacă prin ţara lui ca să ajungă la locul lui.

20 a nd Sihon hath not trusted Israel to pass over through his border, and Sihon gathereth all his people, and they encamp in Jahaz, and fight with Israel;

Dar Sihon nu a avut încredere în Israel ca să-l lase să treacă prin teritoriul lui, ci şi-a adunat poporul, a venit la Iahaţ şi s-a luptat cu Israel.

21 a nd Jehovah, God of Israel, giveth Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smite them, and Israel possesseth all the land of the Amorite, the inhabitant of that land,

Însă Domnul, Dumnezeul lui Israel, l-a dat pe Sihon şi pe toţi oamenii săi în mâna lui Israel. Ei i-au învins şi astfel Israel a ocupat tot teritoriul amoriţilor care locuiau în această ţară.

22 a nd they possess all the border of the Amorite from Arnon, and unto the Jabbok, and from the wilderness, and unto the Jordan.

Ei au moştenit tot teritoriul amoriţilor de la Arnon până la Iabok şi din pustie până la Iordan.

23 ` And now, Jehovah, God of Israel, hath dispossessed the Amorite from the presence of His people Israel, and thou wouldst possess it!

Acum, după ce Domnul, Dumnezeul lui Israel, i-a izgonit pe amoriţi dinaintea poporului Său Israel, tu să-i ocupi teritoriul?

24 T hat which Chemosh thy god causeth thee to possess -- dost thou not possess it? and all that which Jehovah our God hath dispossessed from our presence, -- it we do possess.

Oare nu vei moşteni tu ceea ce îţi dă în stăpânire zeul tău Chemoş ? Deci şi noi vom moşteni tot ceea ce Domnul, Dumnezeul nostru, va dezmoşteni de la alţii pentru noi!

25 ` And now, thou at all better than Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab? did he at all strive with Israel? did he at all fight against them?

Crezi că eşti mai puternic decât Balak, fiul lui Ţipor, regele Moabului? S-a certat el oare vreodată cu Israel sau s-a luptat el împotriva lui?

26 I n Israel's dwelling in Heshbon and in its towns, and in Aroer and in its towns, and in all the cities which by the sides of Arnon three hundred years -- and wherefore have ye not delivered them in that time?

Israel locuieşte de trei sute de ani în Heşbon şi în satele dimprejurul lui, în Aroer şi în satele dimprejurul lui şi în toate cetăţile care sunt pe malurile Arnonului. De ce nu le-aţi luat în tot acest timp?

27 A nd I -- I have not sinned against thee, and thou art doing with me evil -- to fight against me. Jehovah, the Judge, doth judge to-day between the sons of Israel and the sons of Ammon.'

Eu nu ţi-am greşit cu nimic, iar tu îmi faci rău luptându-te cu mine. Domnul să judece astăzi! El să fie Judecător între israeliţi şi amoniţi!“

28 A nd the king of the Bene-Ammon hath not hearkened unto the words of Jephthah which he sent unto him,

Regele amoniţilor nu a luat în seamă mesajul pe care i l-a trimis Iefta.

29 a nd the Spirit of Jehovah is on Jephthah, and he passeth over Gilead and Manasseh, and passeth over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he hath passed over to the Bene-Ammon.

Atunci Duhul Domnului a venit peste Iefta. El a străbătut Ghiladul şi Manase, a trecut prin Miţpa Ghiladului şi din Miţpa Ghiladului a înaintat împotriva amoniţilor.

30 A nd Jephthah voweth a vow to Jehovah, and saith, `If Thou dost at all give the Bene-Ammon into my hand --

Iefta a făcut un jurământ înaintea Domnului, zicându-I: „Dacă îi vei da în mâna mea pe amoniţi,

31 t hen it hath been, that which at all cometh out from the doors of my house to meet me in my turning back in peace from the Bene-Ammon -- it hath been to Jehovah, or I have offered up for it -- a burnt-offering.'

atunci oricine mă va întâmpina la porţile locuinţei mele, când mă voi întoarce în pace de la amoniţi, va fi al Domnului şi îl voi aduce ca ardere de tot!“

32 A nd Jephthah passeth over unto the Bene-Ammon to fight against them, and Jehovah giveth them into his hand,

Iefta a început lupta împotriva amoniţilor şi Domnul i-a dat în mâna lui.

33 a nd he smiteth them from Aroer, and unto thy going in to Minnith, twenty cities, and unto the meadow of the vineyards -- a very great smiting; and the Bene-Ammon are humbled at the presence of the sons of Israel.

El i-a măcelărit de la Aroer până la intrarea în Minit şi până la Abel-Cheramim, distrugând douăzeci de cetăţi. A fost un măcel foarte mare. Astfel, amoniţii au fost umiliţi înaintea Israeliţilor.

34 A nd Jephthah cometh into Mizpeh, unto his house, and lo, his daughter is coming out to meet him with timbrels, and with choruses, and save her alone, he hath none, son or daughter.

Iefta s-a întors acasă, la Miţpa, şi tocmai atunci fiica sa i-a ieşit în întâmpinare cu tamburine şi dansuri. Ea era singurul lui copil. Nu mai avea nici un alt fiu sau fiică.

35 A nd it cometh to pass, when he seeth her, that he rendeth his garments, and saith, `Alas, my daughter, thou hast caused me greatly to bend, and thou hast been among those troubling me; and I -- I have opened my mouth unto Jehovah, and I am not able to turn back.'

Când a văzut-o, şi-a sfâşiat hainele şi a zis: – Vai, fata mea! Mi se frânge inima de durere! Nu ştiu ce să fac, căci am făcut un jurământ înaintea Domnului şi nu pot să-l retrag!

36 A nd she saith unto him, `My father -- thou hast opened thy mouth unto Jehovah, do to me as it hath gone out from thy mouth, after that Jehovah hath done for thee vengeance on thine enemies, on the Bene-Ammon.'

Ea i-a răspuns: – Tată, dacă ai făcut un jurământ înaintea Domnului, fă-mi potrivit cu ceea ce ai jurat, mai ales acum când Domnul te-a răzbunat pe amoniţi, duşmanii tăi!

37 A nd she saith unto her father, `Let this thing be done to me; desist from me two months, and I go on, and have gone down on the hills, and I weep for my virginity -- I and my friends.'

Îngăduie-mi însă un lucru, a continuat ea. Lasă-mă singură două luni căci vreau să plec, să mă duc în munţi cu prietenele mele şi să-mi plâng fecioria!

38 A nd he saith, `Go;' and he sendeth her away two months, and she goeth, she and her friends, and she weepeth for her virginity on the hills;

– Du-te! i-a răspuns el. Şi a lăsat-o singură două luni. Ea s-a dus cu prietenele ei şi şi-a plâns fecioria în munţi.

39 a nd it cometh to pass at the end of two months that she turneth back unto her father, and he doth to her his vow which he hath vowed, and she knew not a man; and it is a statute in Israel:

La sfârşitul celor două luni, s-a întors la tatăl ei şi el şi-a împlinit jurământul făcut. Ea fusese fecioară. De atunci s-a statornicit în Israel obiceiul

40 f rom time to time the daughters of Israel go to talk to the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite, four days in a year.

ca în fiecare an, timp de patru zile, israelitele s-o jelească pe fata ghiladitului Iefta.
