1 A nd Jephthah the Gileadite hath been a mighty man of valour, and he son of a woman, a harlot; and Gilead begetteth Jephthah,

Or Jefte, il Galaadita, era un uomo forte e valoroso, figlio di una prostituta, ed era stato generato da Galaad.

2 a nd the wife of Gilead beareth to him sons, and the wife's sons grow up and cast out Jephthah, and say to him, `Thou dost not inherit in the house of our father; for son of another woman thou.'

La moglie di Galaad gli partorì altri figli; quando i figli di sua moglie divennero adulti, scacciarono Jefte e gli dissero: Tu non avrai eredità in casa di nostro padre, perché sei figlio di un'altra donna».

3 A nd Jephthah fleeth from the face of his brethren, and dwelleth in the land of Tob; and vain men gather themselves together unto Jephthah, and they go out with him.

Jefte allora fuggì lontano dai suoi fratelli e si stabilì nel paese di Tob. Attorno a Jefte si raccolsero degli uomini di nessun valore, che facevano con lui incursioni.

4 A nd it cometh to pass, after a time, that the Bene-Ammon fight with Israel,

Qualche tempo dopo i figli di Ammon mossero guerra a Israele.

5 a nd it cometh to pass, when the Bene-Ammon have fought with Israel, that the elders of Gilead go to take Jephthah from the land of Tob;

Quando i figli di Ammon iniziarono a far guerra contro Israele, gli anziani di Galaad andarono a cercare Jefte nel paese di Tob;

6 a nd they say unto Jephthah, `Come, and thou hast been to us for captain, and we fight against the Bene-Ammon.'

e dissero a Jefte: Vieni e sii nostro capitano, per combattere contro i figli di Ammon».

7 A nd Jephthah saith to the elders of Gilead, `Have not ye hated me? and ye cast me out from the house of my father, and wherefore have ye come unto me now when ye are in distress?'

Ma Jefte rispose agli anziani di Galaad: «Non mi avete voi odiato e scacciato dalla casa di mio padre? Perché venite da me ora che siete nell'avversità?».

8 a nd the elders of Gilead say unto Jephthah, `Therefore, now, we have turned back unto thee; and thou hast gone with us, and fought against the Bene-Ammon, and thou hast been to us for head -- to all the inhabitants of Gilead.'

Gli anziani di Galaad dissero a Jefte: «è proprio per questo che siamo tornati ora da te, affinché tu venga con noi a combattere contro i figli di Ammon e sii nostro capo su tutti gli abitanti di Galaad».

9 A nd Jephthah saith unto the elders of Gilead, `If ye are taking me back to fight against the Bene-Ammon, and Jehovah hath given them before me -- I, am I to you for a head?'

Allora Jefte rispose agli anziani di Galaad: «Se mi riconducete da voi per combattere contro i figli di Ammon, e l'Eterno li dà in mio potere, io sarò vostro capo».

10 A nd the elders of Gilead say unto Jephthah, `Jehovah is hearkening between us -- if according to thy word we do not so.'

Gli anziani di Galaad dissero a Jefte: «I'Eterno sia testimone fra noi, se non facciamo come hai detto».

11 A nd Jephthah goeth with the elders of Gilead, and the people set him over them for head and for captain, and Jephthah speaketh all his words before Jehovah in Mizpeh.

Jefte quindi andò con gli anziani di Galaad e il popolo lo costituì suo capo e condottiero; e Jefte ripetè davanti all'Eterno a Mitspah tutte le parole da lui dette prima.

12 A nd Jephthah sendeth messengers unto the king of the Bene-Ammon, saying, `What -- to me and to thee, that thou hast come in unto me, to fight in my land.'

Poi Jefte inviò messaggeri al re dei figli di Ammon per dirgli: «Che c'è fra me e te, perché tu venga contro di me a far guerra nel mio paese?».

13 A nd the king of the Bene-Ammon saith unto the messengers of Jephthah, `Because Israel took my land in his coming up out of Egypt, from Arnon, and unto the Jabbok, and unto the Jordan; and now, restore them in peace.'

Il re dei figli di Ammon rispose ai messaggeri di Jefte: «Perché, quando Israele salì dall'Egitto, si impadronì del mio paese, dall'Arnon fino allo Jabbok e al Giordano. Ora dunque restituisci queste terre amichevolmente.

14 A nd Jephthah addeth yet and sendeth messengers unto the king of the Bene-Ammon,

Jefte inviò di nuovo messaggeri al re dei figli di Ammon per dirgli:

15 a nd saith to him, `Thus said Jephthah, Israel took not the land of Moab, and the land of the Bene-Ammon,

«Così dice Jefte: Israele non si impadronì del paese di Moab, né del paese dei figli di Ammon;

16 f or in their coming up out of Egypt, Israel goeth in the wilderness unto the Red Sea, and cometh in to Kadesh,

quando però Israele salì dall'Egitto e attraversò il deserto fino al mar Rosso e giunse a Kadesh,

17 a nd Israel sendeth messengers unto the king of Edom, saying, Let me pass over, I pray thee, through thy land, and the king of Edom hearkened not; and also unto the king of Moab hath sent, and he hath not been willing; and Israel abideth in Kadesh,

inviò messaggeri al re di Edom per dirgli: "Ti prego lasciami Passare per il tuo paese"; ma il re di Edom non acconsentì. Mandò pure messaggeri al re di Moab, ma anch'egli rifiutò. Così Israele rimase a Kadesh.

18 a nd he goeth through the wilderness, and compasseth the land of Edom and the land of Moab, and cometh in at the rising of the sun of the land of Moab, and they encamp beyond Arnon, and have not come into the border of Moab, for Arnon the border of Moab.

Camminando poi per il deserto, girò attorno al paese di Edom e al paese di Moab e giunse a oriente del paese di Moab; e si accampò di là dall'Arnon, senza entrare nel territorio di Moab perché l'Arnon segna il confine di Moab.

19 ` And Israel sendeth messengers unto Sihon, king of the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and Israel saith to him, Let us pass over, we pray thee, through thy land, unto my place,

Israele quindi inviò messaggeri a Sihon, re degli Amorei, re di Heshbon, e gli disse: "Ti preghiamo, lasciaci passare attraverso il tuo paese per arrivare al nostro".

20 a nd Sihon hath not trusted Israel to pass over through his border, and Sihon gathereth all his people, and they encamp in Jahaz, and fight with Israel;

Ma Sihon non si fidò a lasciar passare Israele per il suo territorio; anzi Sihon radunò tutta la sua gente, si accampò a Jahats e combattè contro Israele.

21 a nd Jehovah, God of Israel, giveth Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smite them, and Israel possesseth all the land of the Amorite, the inhabitant of that land,

Ma l'Eterno, il DIO d'Israele, diede Sihon e tutta la sua gente nelle mani d'Israele, che li sconfisse; così Israele conquistò tutto il paese degli Amorei, che abitavano quella regione;

22 a nd they possess all the border of the Amorite from Arnon, and unto the Jabbok, and from the wilderness, and unto the Jordan.

conquistò tutto il territorio degli Amorei, dall'Arnon allo Jabbok e dal deserto al Giordano.

23 ` And now, Jehovah, God of Israel, hath dispossessed the Amorite from the presence of His people Israel, and thou wouldst possess it!

E ora che l'Eterno, il DIO d'Israele, ha scacciato gli Amorei davanti al suo popolo d'Israele, vorresti possedere il loro paese?

24 T hat which Chemosh thy god causeth thee to possess -- dost thou not possess it? and all that which Jehovah our God hath dispossessed from our presence, -- it we do possess.

Non possiedi tu quello che Kemosh, il tuo dio, ti ha dato di possedere? Così anche noi possederemo il paese di quelli che l'Eterno ha scacciato davanti a noi.

25 ` And now, thou at all better than Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab? did he at all strive with Israel? did he at all fight against them?

Sei tu forse da piú di Balak, figlio di Tsippor, re di Moab? Contese egli forse con Israele, o gli fece guerra?

26 I n Israel's dwelling in Heshbon and in its towns, and in Aroer and in its towns, and in all the cities which by the sides of Arnon three hundred years -- and wherefore have ye not delivered them in that time?

Sono trecento anni che Israele abita ad Heshbon e nei suoi villaggi limitrofi ad Aroer e nei suoi villaggi limitrofi e in tutte le città sulle sponde dell'Arnon; perché non gliele avete tolte durante questo tempo?

27 A nd I -- I have not sinned against thee, and thou art doing with me evil -- to fight against me. Jehovah, the Judge, doth judge to-day between the sons of Israel and the sons of Ammon.'

Perciò io non ti ho fatto alcun torto, e tu agisci male verso di me, muovendomi guerra. L'Eterno, il giudice, faccia oggi giustizia tra i figli d'Israele e i figli di Ammon!».

28 A nd the king of the Bene-Ammon hath not hearkened unto the words of Jephthah which he sent unto him,

Ma il re dei figli di Ammon non diede ascolto alle parole che Jefte gli aveva mandato a dire.

29 a nd the Spirit of Jehovah is on Jephthah, and he passeth over Gilead and Manasseh, and passeth over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he hath passed over to the Bene-Ammon.

Allora lo Spirito dell'Eterno venne su Jefte, ed egli attraversò Galaad e Manasse, passò a Mitspah di Galaad e da Mitspah di Galaad mosse contro i figli di Ammon.

30 A nd Jephthah voweth a vow to Jehovah, and saith, `If Thou dost at all give the Bene-Ammon into my hand --

Jefte fece un voto all'Eterno e disse: «Se tu mi dai nelle mani i figli di Ammon,

31 t hen it hath been, that which at all cometh out from the doors of my house to meet me in my turning back in peace from the Bene-Ammon -- it hath been to Jehovah, or I have offered up for it -- a burnt-offering.'

ciò che uscirà dalle porte di casa mia per venirmi incontro quando tornerò vittorioso dai figli di Ammon apparterrà all'Eterno, e io l'offrirò in olocausto».

32 A nd Jephthah passeth over unto the Bene-Ammon to fight against them, and Jehovah giveth them into his hand,

Così Jefte marciò contro i figli di Ammon per far loro guerra, e l'Eterno glieli diede nelle mani.

33 a nd he smiteth them from Aroer, and unto thy going in to Minnith, twenty cities, and unto the meadow of the vineyards -- a very great smiting; and the Bene-Ammon are humbled at the presence of the sons of Israel.

Egli li sconfisse facendone una grande strage, da Aroer fino verso Minnith (prendendo loro venti città) e fino ad Abel-Keramim. Così i figli di Ammon furono umiliati davanti ai figli d'Israele.

34 A nd Jephthah cometh into Mizpeh, unto his house, and lo, his daughter is coming out to meet him with timbrels, and with choruses, and save her alone, he hath none, son or daughter.

Poi Jefte ritornò a casa sua, a Mitspah; ed ecco uscirgli incontro sua figlia con tamburelli e danze. Essa era l'unica figlia, perché egli non aveva altri figli o figlie.

35 A nd it cometh to pass, when he seeth her, that he rendeth his garments, and saith, `Alas, my daughter, thou hast caused me greatly to bend, and thou hast been among those troubling me; and I -- I have opened my mouth unto Jehovah, and I am not able to turn back.'

Come la vide, si stracciò le vesti e disse: «Ah, figlia mia, tu mi rendi grandemente infelice, tu mi porti sventura! lo ho dato la mia parola all'Eterno e non posso tirarmi indietro».

36 A nd she saith unto him, `My father -- thou hast opened thy mouth unto Jehovah, do to me as it hath gone out from thy mouth, after that Jehovah hath done for thee vengeance on thine enemies, on the Bene-Ammon.'

Ella gli disse: «Padre mio, se hai dato la tua parola all'Eterno, fa' di me secondo ciò che è uscito dalla tua bocca, perché l'Eterno ti ha vendicato dei tuoi nemici, i figli di Ammon».

37 A nd she saith unto her father, `Let this thing be done to me; desist from me two months, and I go on, and have gone down on the hills, and I weep for my virginity -- I and my friends.'

Poi disse a suo padre: «Mi sia concesso questo: «lasciami libera per due mesi, affinché possa andare in giro per i monti a piangere la mia verginità con le mie compagne».

38 A nd he saith, `Go;' and he sendeth her away two months, and she goeth, she and her friends, and she weepeth for her virginity on the hills;

Egli le rispose: «Va'!». E la lasciò andare per due mesi. Così ella se ne andò con le sue compagne e pianse sui monti la sua verginità.

39 a nd it cometh to pass at the end of two months that she turneth back unto her father, and he doth to her his vow which he hath vowed, and she knew not a man; and it is a statute in Israel:

Alla fine dei due mesi ella tornò da suo padre; ed egli fece di lei secondo il voto che aveva fatto. Ella non aveva conosciuto uomo. Così divenne usanza in Israele

40 f rom time to time the daughters of Israel go to talk to the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite, four days in a year.

che le figlie d'Israele vanno tutti gli anni a piangere la figlia di Jefte, il Galaadita, per quattro giorni.
