1 B low ye a trumpet in Zion, And shout ye in My holy hill, Tremble do all inhabitants of the earth, For coming is the day of Jehovah, for near!

Suonate la tromba in Sion e date l'allarme sul mio santo monte! Tremino tutti gli abitanti del paese, perché il giorno dell'Eterno viene, perché è vicino.

2 A day of darkness and thick darkness, A day of cloud and thick darkness, As darkness spread on the mountains, A people numerous and mighty, Like it there hath not been from of old, And after it there is not again -- till the years of generation and generation.

giorno di tenebre e di densa oscurità, giorno di nubi e di caligine. Come l'alba si estende sui monti, viene un popolo numeroso e potente, simile al quale non ci fu mai alcuno prima, né mai piú ce ne sarà per molte generazioni future.

3 B efore it consumed hath fire, And after it burn doth a flame, As the garden of Eden the land before it, And after it a wilderness -- a desolation! And also an escape there hath not been to it,

Davanti a lui un fuoco divora e dietro a lui brucia una fiamma. Davanti a lui il paese è come il giardino dell'Eden; e dietro a lui è un deserto desolato; sí, nulla gli sfugge.

4 A s the appearance of horses its appearance, And as horsemen, so they run.

Il loro aspetto è come l'aspetto di cavalli, e corrono come veloci destrieri.

5 A s the noise of chariots, on the tops of the mountains they skip, As the noise of a flame of fire devouring stubble, As a mighty people set in array for battle.

Essi balzano sulle cime dei monti con un fragore di carri, come il crepitio di una fiamma di fuoco che divora la stoppia, come un popolo forte schierato in battaglia.

6 F rom its face pained are peoples, All faces have gathered paleness.

Davanti a loro i popoli si contorcono per il dolore, ogni volto impallidisce.

7 A s mighty ones they run, As men of war they go up a wall, And each in his own ways they do go, And they embarrass not their paths.

Corrono come uomini valorosi, salgono sulle mura come uomini di guerra; ognuno procede per la sua strada senza deviare dal suo cammino.

8 A nd each his brother they press not, Each in his way they go on, If by the missile they fall, they are not cut off.

Nessuno spinge il suo vicino, ognuno procede per il suo sentiero, si slanciano in mezzo ai dardi, ma non sono feriti.

9 I n the city they run to and fro, On the wall they run, Into houses they go up by the windows, They go in as a thief.

Scorazzano per la città, corrono sulle mura, salgono sulle case, entrano dalle finestre come un ladro.

10 A t their face trembled hath the earth, Shaken have the heavens, Sun and moon have been black, And stars have gathered up their shining.

Davanti a loro trema la terra, i cieli tremano, il sole e la luna si oscurano e le stelle ritirano il loro splendore.

11 A nd Jehovah hath given forth His voice before His force, For very great His camp, For mighty the doer of His word, For great the day of Jehovah -- very fearful, And who doth bear it?

L'Eterno fa udire la sua voce davanti al suo esercito, perché il suo campo è molto grande e potente l'esecutore della sua parola. Sí, il giorno dell'Eterno è grande e assai terribile; chi potrà sostenerlo?

12 A nd also now -- an affirmation of Jehovah, Turn ye back unto Me with all your heart, And with fasting, and with weeping, And with lamentation.

«Perciò ora», dice l'Eterno, «tornate a me con tutto il vostro cuore, con digiuni, con pianti e con lamenti».

13 A nd rend your heart, and not your garments, And turn back unto Jehovah your God, For gracious and merciful He, Slow to anger, and abundant in kindness, And He hath repented concerning the evil.

Stracciate il vostro cuore e non le vostre vesti e tornate all'Eterno, il vostro DIO, perché egli è misericordioso e pieno di compassione, lento all'ira e di grande benignità, e si pente del male mandato.

14 W ho knoweth -- He doth turn back, Yea -- He hath repented, And He hath left behind Him a blessing, A present and libation of Jehovah your God?

Chi sa che non si volga e si penta, e lasci dietro a sè una benedizione, un'offerta di cibo e una libazione per l'Eterno, il vostro DIO?

15 B low ye a trumpet in Zion, Sanctify a fast -- proclaim a restraint.

Suonate la tromba in Sion, proclamate un digiuno, convocate una solenne assemblea.

16 G ather the people, sanctify an assembly, Assemble the aged, Gather infants and sucklings of the breasts, Go out let a bridegroom from his inner chamber, And a bride out of her closet.

Radunate il popolo, santificate l'assemblea, riunite i vecchi, radunate i fanciulli e quelli che succhiano al seno. Esca lo sposo dalla sua camera e la sposa dalla sua camera nuziale.

17 B etween the porch and the altar weep let the priests, ministrants of Jehovah, And let them say: `Have pity, O Jehovah, on Thy people, And give not Thy inheritance to reproach, To the ruling over them of nations, Why do they say among peoples, Where their God?'

Fra il portico e l'altare, piangano i sacerdoti, i ministri dell'Eterno, e dicano: «Risparmia, o Eterno, il tuo popolo e non dare la tua eredità al vituperio o ad essere dominata dalle nazioni. Perché si direbbe fra i popoli: "Dov'è il loro DIO?".

18 A nd let Jehovah be zealous for His land, And have pity on His people.

Allora l'Eterno si è mosso a gelosia per il suo paese e ha avuto compassione del suo popolo.

19 L et Jehovah answer and say to His people, `Lo, I am sending to you the corn, And the new wine, and the oil, And ye have been satisfied with it, And I make you no more a reproach among nations,

L'Eterno risponderà e dirà al suo popolo: «Ecco, io vi manderò grano, mosto e olio e ne avrete a sazietà e non vi renderò piú il vituperio delle nazioni.

20 A nd the northern I put far off from you, And have driven him unto a land dry and desolate, With his face unto the eastern sea, And his rear unto the western sea, And come up hath his stink, And come up doth his stench, For he hath exerted himself to work.

Allontanerò da voi l'esercito del nord e lo guiderò in una terra arida e desolata: la sua avanguardia verso il mare orientale e la sua retroguardia verso il mare occidentale, il suo puzzo salirà il suo fetore si leverà, perché ha fatto cose grandi.

21 D o not fear, O land! joy and rejoice, For Jehovah hath exerted Himself to work.

Non temere, o suolo, gioisci rallegrati, perché l'Eterno ha fatto cose grandi.

22 D o not fear, O cattle of the field! For sprung forth have pastures of a wilderness, For the tree hath borne its fruit, Fig-tree and vine have given their strength!

Non temete, o bestie dei campi, perché i terreni da pascolo, sono rinverditi gli alberi portano il loro frutto il fico e la vite danno tutta la loro ricchezza.

23 A nd ye sons of Zion, joy and rejoice, In Jehovah your God, For He hath given to you the Teacher for righteousness, And causeth to come down to you a shower, Sprinkling and gathered -- in the beginning.

Gioite quindi, o figli di Sion, e rallegratevi nell'Eterno, il vostro DIO, perché vi ha dato la prima pioggia, secondo giustizia e farà cadere per voi la pioggia, la prima pioggia e l'ultima pioggia nel primo mese.

24 A nd full have been the floors pure corn, And overflown have the presses new wine and oil.

Le aie saranno piene di grano e i tini traboccheranno di mosto e di olio

25 A nd I have recompensed to you the years That consume did the locust, the cankerworm, And the caterpillar, and the palmer-worm, My great force that I did send against you.

cosí vi compenserò delle annate che hanno divorato la cavalletta, la larva della cavalletta la locusta e il bruco, il mio grande esercito che avevo mandato contro di voi.

26 A nd ye have eaten, eating and being satisfied, And have praised the name of Jehovah your God, Who hath dealt with you wonderfully, And not ashamed are My people to the age.

E voi mangerete in abbondanza e sarete saziati, e loderete il nome dell'Eterno, il vostro DIO, che per voi ha fatto meraviglie, e il mio popolo non sarà mai piú coperto di vergogna.

27 A nd ye have known that in the midst of Israel I, And I Jehovah your God, and there is none else, And not ashamed are My people to the age.

Allora voi riconoscerete che io sono in mezzo ad Israele e che sono l'Eterno, il vostro DIO, e non ce n'è alcun altro; il mio popolo non sarà mai piú coperto di vergogna».

28 A nd it hath come to pass afterwards, I do pour out My Spirit on all flesh, And prophesied have your sons and your daughters, Your old men do dream dreams, Your young men do see visions.

«Dopo questo avverrà che io spanderò il mio Spirito sopra ogni carne, i vostri figli e le vostre figlie profetizzeranno, i vostri vecchi faranno sogni, i vostri giovani avranno visioni.

29 A nd also on the men-servants, and on the maid-servants, In those days I do pour out My Spirit.

In quei giorni spanderò il mio Spirito anche sui servi e sulle serve.

30 A nd I have given wonders in the heavens, and in the earth, Blood and fire, and columns of smoke.

Farò prodigi nei cieli e sulla terra: sangue fuoco e colonne di fumo.

31 T he sun is turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, Before the coming of the day of Jehovah, The great and the fearful.

Il sole sarà mutato in tenebre e la luna in sangue, prima che venga il grande e terribile giorno dell'Eterno.

32 A nd it hath come to pass, Every one who calleth in the name of Jehovah is delivered, For in mount Zion and in Jerusalem there is an escape, As Jehovah hath said, And among the remnants whom Jehovah is calling!

E avverrà che chiunque invocherà il nome dell'Eterno sarà salvato, perché sul monte Sion e in Gerusalemme vi sarà salvezza, come ha detto l'Eterno, e fra i superstiti che l'Eterno chiamerà».
