1 A nd passing by, he saw a man blind from birth,

Mentre passava, vide un uomo che era cieco fin dalla nascita.

2 a nd his disciples asked him, saying, `Rabbi, who did sin, this one or his parents, that he should be born blind?'

E i suoi discepoli lo interrogarono, dicendo: «Maestro, chi ha peccato, lui o i suoi genitori, perché sia nato cieco?».

3 J esus answered, `Neither did this one sin nor his parents, but that the works of God may be manifested in him;

Gesú rispose: «Né lui né i suoi genitori hanno peccato, ma ciò è accaduto, affinché siano manifestate in lui le opere di Dio.

4 i t behoveth me to be working the works of Him who sent me while it is day; night doth come, when no one is able to work: --

Bisogna che io compia le opere di colui che mi ha mandato, mentre è giorno; la notte viene in cui nessuno può operare.

5 w hen I am in the world, I am a light of the world.'

Mentre sono nel mondo, io sono la luce del mondo».

6 T hese things saying, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and rubbed the clay on the eyes of the blind man, and said to him,

Dopo aver detto queste cose, sputò in terra, con la saliva fece del fango e ne impiastrò gli occhi del cieco.

7 ` Go away, wash at the pool of Siloam,' which is, interpreted, Sent. He went away, therefore, and did wash, and came seeing;

8 t he neighbours, therefore, and those seeing him before, that he was blind, said, `Is not this he who is sitting and begging?'

Allora i vicini e quelli che lo avevano visto prima cieco, dissero: «Non è questi colui che stava seduto a mendicare?».

9 o thers said -- `This is he;' and others -- `He is like to him;' he himself said, -- `I am.'

Alcuni dicevano: «E' lui». Altri: «Gli assomiglia». Ed egli diceva: «Io sono».

10 T hey said, therefore, to him, `How were thine eyes opened?'

Gli dissero dunque: «Come ti sono stati aperti gli occhi?».

11 h e answered and said, `A man called Jesus made clay, and rubbed my eyes, and said to me, Go away to the pool of Siloam, and wash; and having gone away and having washed, I received sight;'

Egli rispose e disse: «Un uomo, chiamato Gesú, ha fatto del fango, mi ha spalmato gli occhi e mi ha detto: "Va' alla piscina di Siloe e lavati". Ed io vi sono andato, mi sono lavato e ho recuperato la vista».

12 t hey said, therefore, to him, `Where is that one?' he saith, `I have not known.'

E quelli gli dissero: «Dov'è costui?». Egli rispose: «Non lo so».

13 T hey bring him to the Pharisees who once blind,

Allora essi condussero dai farisei colui che prima era stato cieco.

14 a nd it was a sabbath when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes.

Ora era sabato quando Gesú fece del fango e gli aperse gli occhi.

15 A gain, therefore, the Pharisees also were asking him how he received sight, and he said to them, `Clay he did put upon my eyes, and I did wash -- and I see.'

Anche i farisei dunque gli domandarono di nuovo come avesse recuperato la vista. Ed egli disse loro: «Mi ha messo del fango sugli occhi, mi sono lavato e ci vedo».

16 O f the Pharisees, therefore, certain said, `This man is not from God, because the sabbath he doth not keep;' others said, `How is a man -- a sinful one -- able to do such signs?' and there was a division among them.

Allora alcuni farisei dicevano: «Quest'uomo non è da Dio, perché non osserva il sabato». Altri dicevano: «Come può un uomo peccatore compiere tali segni?». E c'era divisione tra di loro.

17 T hey said to the blind man again, `Thou -- what dost thou say of him -- that he opened thine eyes?'

Chiesero dunque di nuovo al cieco: «E tu, che dici di lui per il fatto che ti ha aperto gli occhi?». Egli disse: «E' un profeta!».

18 a nd he said -- `He is a prophet.' The Jews, therefore, did not believe concerning him that he was blind and did receive sight, till that they called the parents of him who received sight,

Ma i Giudei non credettero che lui fosse stato cieco e avesse riacquistato la vista, finché ebbero chiamato i genitori di colui che aveva riacquistato la vista.

19 a nd they asked them, saying, `Is your son, of whom ye say that he was born blind? how then now doth he see?'

E chiesero loro: «E' questo il vostro figlio che voi dite esser nato cieco? Come mai ora ci vede?».

20 H is parents answered them and said, `We have known that this is our son, and that he was born blind;

I suoi genitori, rispondendo loro dissero: «Noi sappiamo che costui è nostro figlio e che è nato cieco,

21 a nd how he now seeth, we have not known; or who opened his eyes, we have not known; himself is of age, ask him; he himself shall speak concerning himself.'

ma come ora ci veda, o chi gli abbia aperto gli occhi, noi non lo sappiamo domandatelo a lui; egli è adulto, parlerà lui stesso di sé».

22 T hese things said his parents, because they were afraid of the Jews, for already had the Jews agreed together, that if any one may confess him -- Christ, he may be put out of the synagogue;

Questo dissero i suoi genitori, perché avevano paura dei Giudei; infatti i Giudei avevano già stabilito che se uno avesse riconosciuto Gesú come il Cristo, sarebbe stato espulso dalla sinagoga.

23 b ecause of this his parents said -- `He is of age, ask him.'

Perciò i suoi genitori dissero: «E' adulto, chiedetelo a lui».

24 T hey called, therefore, a second time the man who was blind, and they said to him, `Give glory to God, we have known that this man is a sinner;'

Essi dunque chiamarono di nuovo l'uomo che era stato cieco e gli dissero: «Da' gloria a Dio; noi sappiamo che quest'uomo è peccatore».

25 h e answered, therefore, and said, `If he be a sinner -- I have not known, one thing I have known, that, being blind, now I see.'

Egli allora rispose e disse: «Se sia peccatore, non lo so; ma una cosa so, che prima ero cieco e ora ci vedo».

26 A nd they said to him again, `What did he to thee? how did he open thine eyes?'

Gli chiesero di nuovo: «Che cosa ti ha fatto? Come ti ha aperto gli occhi?».

27 H e answered them, `I told you already, and ye did not hear; why again do ye wish to hear? do ye also wish to become his disciples?'

Egli rispose loro: «Io ve l'ho già detto e voi non avete ascoltato, perché volete udirlo di nuovo? Volete forse diventare anche voi suoi discepoli?».

28 T hey reviled him, therefore, and said, `Thou art his disciple, and we are Moses' disciples;

Essi perciò l'ingiuriarono e dissero: «Tu sei suo discepolo; ma noi siamo discepoli di Mosé.

29 w e have known that God hath spoken to Moses, but this one -- we have not known whence he is.'

Noi sappiamo che Dio ha parlato a Mosé, ma quanto a costui non sappiamo da dove venga».

30 T he man answered and said to them, `Why, in this is a wonderful thing, that ye have not known whence he is, and he opened my eyes!

Quell'uomo rispose e disse loro: «Ebbene, è molto strano che voi non sappiate da dove venga; eppure egli mi ha aperto gli occhi.

31 a nd we have known that God doth not hear sinners, but, if any one may be a worshipper of God, and may do His will, him He doth hear;

Or noi sappiamo che Dio non esaudisce i peccatori, ma se uno è pio verso Dio e fa la sua volontà, egli lo esaudisce.

32 f rom the age it was not heard, that any one did open eyes of one who hath been born blind;

Da che mondo è mondo non si è mai sentito dire che uno abbia aperto gli occhi ad un cieco nato.

33 i f this one were not from God, he were not able to do anything.'

Se costui non fosse da Dio, non avrebbe potuto fare nulla».

34 T hey answered and said to him, `In sins thou wast born altogether, and thou dost teach us!' and they cast him forth without.

Essi risposero e gli dissero: «Tu sei nato completamente nei peccati e vuoi insegnare a noi?». E lo cacciarono fuori.

35 J esus heard that they cast him forth without, and having found him, he said to him, `Dost thou believe in the Son of God?'

Gesú seppe che l'avevano cacciato fuori e, trovatolo, gli disse: «Credi tu nel Figlio di Dio?».

36 h e answered and said, `Who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?'

Egli rispose e disse: «Chi è, Signore, perché io creda in lui?».

37 A nd Jesus said to him, `Thou hast both seen him, and he who is speaking with thee is he;'

E Gesú gli disse: «Tu l'hai visto, è proprio colui che ti sta parlando»

38 a nd he said, `I believe, sir,' and bowed before him.

Allora egli disse: «lo credo, Signore»; e l'adorò.

39 A nd Jesus said, `For judgment I to this world did come, that those not seeing may see, and those seeing may become blind.'

Poi Gesú disse: «lo sono venuto in questo mondo per fare un giudizio, affinché quelli che non vedono vedano e quelli che vedono diventino ciechi».

40 A nd those of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things, and they said to him, `Are we also blind?'

Alcuni dei farisei che erano con lui udirono queste cose e gli dissero: «Siamo ciechi anche noi?».

41 J esus said to them, `If ye were blind, ye were not having had sin, but now ye say -- We see, therefore doth your sin remain.

Gesú rispose loro: «Se foste ciechi, non avreste alcun peccato; ma siccome dite: "Noi vediamo perciò il vostro peccato rimane».
