1 A nd David inspecteth the people who with him, and setteth over them heads of thousands and heads of hundreds,

Davide passò in rassegna la gente che era con lui e costituí su di loro capitani di migliaia e capitani di centinaia.

2 a nd David sendeth the third of the people by the hand of Joab, and the third by the hand of Abishai, son of Zeruiah, brother of Joab, and the third by the hand of Ittai the Gittite, and the king saith unto the people, `I certainly go out -- I also -- with you.'

Poi Davide mandò avanti un terzo della sua gente sotto il comando di Joab, un terzo sotto il comando di Abishai, figlio di Tseruiah, fratello di Joab, e un terzo sotto il comando di Ittai di Gath. Poi il re disse al popolo: «Voglio andare anch'io con voi!».

3 A nd the people say, `Thou dost not go out, for if we utterly flee, they do not set heart upon us; and if half of us die, they do not set heart unto us -- for now like us ten thousand; and now, better that thou be to us from the city for an helper.'

Ma il popolo rispose: «Tu non devi venire, perché se noi fossimo messi in fuga, non darebbero alcuna importanza a noi; anche se morisse la metà di noi non darebbero alcuna importanza a noi; ma tu conti come diecimila di noi; è meglio dunque che tu sia pronto a darci aiuto dalla città».

4 A nd the king saith unto them, `That which is good in your eyes I do;' and the king standeth at the side of the gate, and all the people have gone out by hundreds and by thousands,

Il re rispose loro: «Farò ciò che vi sembra bene». Cosí il re rimase accanto alla porta, mentre tutto il popolo usciva a schiere di cento e di mille uomini.

5 a nd the king chargeth Joab, and Abishai, and Ittai, saying, `Gently -- for me, for the youth, for Absalom;' and all the people heard in the king's charging all the heads concerning Absalom.

Il re diede quest'ordine a Joab, a Abishai e a Ittai: «Per amor mio, trattate con riguardo il giovane Absalom!». Tutto il popolo udí quando il re diede a tutti i capitani quest'ordine nei confronti di Absalom.

6 A nd the people goeth out into the field to meet Israel, and the battle is in a forest of Ephraim;

Cosí l'esercito uscí in campo contro Israele e la battaglia ebbe luogo nella foresta di Efraim.

7 a nd smitten there are the people of Israel before the servants of David, and the smiting there is great on that day -- twenty thousand;

Il popolo d'Israele fu là sconfitto dai servi di Davide; e in quel luogo la strage fu grande: in quel giorno caddero ventimila uomini.

8 a nd the battle is there scattered over the face of all the land, and the forest multiplieth to devour among the people more than those whom the sword hath devoured in that day.

La battaglia si estese su tutta la regione; e la foresta divorò più gente di quanta ne avesse divorato la spada.

9 A nd Absalom meeteth before the servants of David, and Absalom is riding on the mule, and the mule cometh in under an entangled bough of the great oak, and his head taketh hold on the oak, and he is placed between the heavens and the earth, and the mule that under him hath passed on.

Poi Absalom s'imbattè nella gente di Davide. Absalom cavalcava un mulo; il mulo entrò sotto i fitti rami di una grande quercia e il capo di Absalom rimase impigliato nella quercia, e cosí rimase sospeso fra cielo e terra; mentre il mulo che era sotto di lui passava oltre.

10 A nd one man seeth, and declareth to Joab, and saith, `Lo, I saw Absalom hanged in an oak.'

Un uomo vide questo e avvertí Joab, dicendo: «Ho visto Absalom appeso a una quercia».

11 A nd Joab saith to the man who is declaring to him, `And lo, thou hast seen -- and wherefore didst thou not smite him there to the earth -- and on me to give to thee ten silverlings and one girdle?'

Allora Joab rispose all'uomo che lo aveva informato: «Ecco, tu l'hai visto? E perché non l'hai tu, sul posto steso morto al suolo? Io ti avrei dato dieci sicli d'argento e una cintura».

12 A nd the man saith unto Joab, `Yea, though I am weighing on my hand a thousand silverlings, I do not put forth my hand unto the son of the king; for in our ears hath the king charged thee, and Abishai, and Ittai, saying, Observe ye who against the youth -- against Absalom;

Ma quell'uomo disse a Joab: «Anche se mi fossero messi in mano mille sicli d'argento, io non stenderei la mano contro il figlio del re, poiché noi abbiamo udito l'ordine che il re ha dato a te, ad Abishai e a Ittai, dicendo: "State attenti dal fare alcun male al giovane Absalom".

13 o r I had done against my soul a vain thing, and no matter is hid from the king, and thou -- thou dost station thyself over-against.'

Avrei di fatto agito disonestamente contro la mia stessa vita, poiché nulla rimane nascosto al re; e tu stesso saresti sorto contro di me».

14 A nd Joab saith, `Not right -- I tarry before thee;' and he taketh three darts in his hand, and striketh them into the heart of Absalom, while he alive, in the midst of the oak.

Allora Joab disse: «Non voglio perdere tempo con te in questo modo». Cosí prese in mano tre dardi e li immerse nel cuore di Absalom, che era ancora vivo nel folto della quercia.

15 A nd they go round -- ten youths bearing weapons of Joab -- and smite Absalom, and put him to death.

Poi dieci giovani scudieri di Joab circondarono Absalom, lo colpirono ancora e lo finirono.

16 A nd Joab bloweth with a trumpet, and the people turneth back from pursuing after Israel, for Joab hath kept back the people;

Allora Joab fece suonare la tromba e il popolo smise d'inseguire Israele, perché Joab trattenne il popolo.

17 a nd they take Absalom and cast him in the forest unto the great pit, and set up over him a very great heap of stones, and all Israel have fled -- each to his tent.

Poi presero Absalom, lo gettarono in una grande fossa nella foresta ed ammassarono sopra di lui un enorme mucchio di pietre; quindi tutto Israele fuggí, ciascuno alla sua tenda.

18 A nd Absalom hath taken, and setteth up for himself in his life, the standing-pillar that in the king's valley, for he said, `I have no son to cause my name to be remembered;' and he calleth the standing-pillar by his own name, and it is called `The monument of Absalom' unto this day.

Or Absalom, mentre era in vita, si era eretto il monumento che è nella Valle del Re; perché diceva:» Io non ho un figlio che conservi il ricordo del mio nome». Cosí diede il suo nome a quel monumento, che anche oggi si chiama "monumento di Absalom".

19 A nd Ahimaaz son of Zadok said, `Let me run, I pray thee, and I bear the king tidings, for Jehovah hath delivered him out of the hand of his enemies;'

Ahimaats, figlio di Tsadok disse a Joab: «Lasciami andare di corsa a portare al re la notizia che l'Eterno gli ha fatto giustizia contro i suoi nemici».

20 a nd Joab saith to him, `Thou art not a man of tidings this day, but thou hast borne tidings on another day, and this day thou dost not bear tidings, because the king's son dead.'

Joab gli rispose: «Tu non porterai la notizia oggi; la porterai un altro giorno non porterai la notizia oggi, perché il figlio del re è morto».

21 A nd Joab saith to Cushi, `Go, declare to the king that which thou hast seen;' and Cushi boweth himself to Joab, and runneth.

Poi Joab disse all'Etiope: «Va' e riferisci al re ciò che hai visto». L'Etiope s'inchinò a Joab e partì di corsa.

22 A nd Ahimaaz son of Zadok addeth again, and saith unto Joab, `And whatever it be, let me run, I pray thee, I also, after the Cushite.' And Joab saith, `Why this -- thou art running, my son, and for thee there are no tidings found?' --

Ahimaats, figlio di Tsadok, disse di nuovo a Joab: «Qualunque cosa accada ti prego, lasciami correre dietro all'Etiope!». Joab gli disse: «Ma perché vorresti correre, figlio mio? Tanto non avrai alcuna ricompensa per la notizia che porti».

23 ` And, whatever it be, let me run.' And he saith to him, `Run;' and Ahimaaz runneth the way of the circuit, and passeth by the Cushite.

E l'altro: «Qualunque cosa avvenga, voglio correre». Joab gli disse: «Corri!». Allora Ahimaats prese a correre per la via della pianura e sorpassò l'Etiope.

24 A nd David is sitting between the two gates, and the watchman goeth unto the roof of the gate, unto the wall, and lifteth up his eyes, and looketh, and lo, a man running by himself.

Or Davide era seduto fra le due porte; la sentinella salí sul tetto della porta vicino alle mura; alzò gli occhi e guardò, ed ecco un uomo che correva tutto solo.

25 A nd the watchman calleth, and declareth to the king, and the king saith, `If by himself, tidings in his mouth;' and he cometh, coming on and drawing near.

La sentinella gridò e avvertí il re. Il re disse: «Se è solo, porta notizie». E quello andava avvicinandosi sempre più.

26 A nd the watchman seeth another man running, and the watchman calleth unto the gatekeeper, and saith, `Lo, a man running by himself;' and the king saith, `Also this one is bearing tidings.'

Poi la sentinella vide un altro uomo che correva e gridò al guardiano della porta: «Ecco un altro uomo che corre tutto solo!». Il re disse: «Anche questo porta notizie».

27 A nd the watchman saith, `I see the running of the first as the running of Ahimaaz son of Zadok.' And the king saith, `This a good man, and with good tidings he cometh.'

La sentinella soggiunse: «Il modo di correre del primo mi sembra quello di Ahimaats, figlio di Tsadok!». Il re disse: «E' un uomo dabbene e viene con buone notizie».

28 A nd Ahimaaz calleth and saith unto the king, `Peace;' and he boweth himself to the king, on his face, to the earth, and saith, `Blessed Jehovah thy God who hath shut up the men who lifted up their hand against my lord the king.'

Ahimaats gridò al re e disse: «Pace!». Poi si prostrò davanti al re con la faccia a terra e disse: «Benedetto sia l'Eterno, il tuo DIO, che ha dato in tuo potere gli uomini che avevano alzato le mani contro il re, mio signore!».

29 A nd the king saith, `Peace to the youth -- to Absalom?' And Ahimaaz saith, `I saw the great multitude, at the sending away of the servant of the king, even thy servant Joab, and I have not known what.'

Il re disse: «Sta bene il giovane Absalom?». Ahimaats rispose: «Quando Joab ha mandato il servo del re e me tuo servo ho visto un gran tumulto, ma non so di che si trattasse».

30 A nd the king saith, `Turn round, station thyself here;' and he turneth round and standeth still.

Il re gli disse: «Spostati e rimani qui». Ed egli si spostò e rimase là.

31 A nd lo, the Cushite hath come, and the Cushite saith, `Let tidings be proclaimed, my lord, O king; for Jehovah hath delivered thee to-day out of the hand of all those rising up against thee.'

Proprio allora giunse l'Etiope, e l'Etiope disse: «Buone notizie, o re mio signore. L'Eterno oggi ti ha fatto giustizia, liberandoti dalle mani di tutti quelli che erano insorti contro di te».

32 A nd the king saith unto the Cushite, `Peace to the youth -- to Absalom?' And the Cushite saith, `Let them be -- as the youth -- the enemies of my lord the king, and all who have risen up against thee for evil.'

Il re disse all'Etiope: «Sta bene il giovane Absalom?». L'Etiope rispose: «Possano i nemici del re mio signore e tutti quelli che insorgono contro di te per farti del male, essere come quel giovane!».

33 A nd the king trembleth, and goeth up on the upper chamber of the gate, and weepeth, and thus he hath said in his going, `My son! Absalom my son; my son Absalom; oh that I had died for thee, Absalom, my son, my son.'

Allora il re, fremendo tutto salí nella camera che era sopra la porta e pianse mentre andava diceva: «O mio figlio Absalom; mio figlio, mio figlio Absalom! Fossi morto io al tuo posto, o Absalom figlio mio, figlio mio!».
