1 O n that night hath the sleep of the king fled away, and he saith to bring in the book of memorials of the Chronicles, and they are read before the king,

Quella notte il re non poteva prendere sonno. Allora ordinò che gli si portasse il libro dei fatti memorabili, le Cronache; e se ne fece la lettura davanti al re.

2 a nd it is found written that Mordecai had declared concerning Bigthana and Teresh, two of the eunuchs of the king, of the keepers of the threshold, who sought to put forth a hand on king Ahasuerus.

Vi si trovò scritto che Mardocheo aveva denunciato Bigthana e Teresh, i due eunuchi del re fra i portinai, che avevano cercato di stendere la mano contro il re Assuero.

3 A nd the king saith, `What honour and greatness hath been done to Mordecai for this?' And the servants of the king, his ministers, say, `Nothing hath been done with him.'

Allora il re chiese: «Quale onore e riconoscimento è stato dato a Mardocheo per questo?». I servi del re che gli prestavano servizio risposero: «Non si è fatto nulla per lui».

4 A nd the king saith, `Who in the court?' -- and Haman hath come in to the outer court of the house of the king, to say to the king to hang Mordecai on the tree that he had prepared for him --

Il re allora disse: «Chi è nel cortile?». (Ora Haman era appena entrato nel cortile esterno del palazzo del re, per chiedere al re di far impiccare Mardocheo alla forca che aveva preparato per lui).

5 a nd the servants of the king say unto him, `Lo, Haman is standing in the court;' and the king saith, `Let him come in.'

I servi del re gli risposero: «Ecco, è Haman nel cortile». Il re disse: «Fatelo entrare».

6 A nd Haman cometh in, and the king saith to him, `What -- to do with the man in whose honour the king hath delighted?' And Haman saith in his heart, `To whom doth the king delight to do honour more than myself?'

Allora Haman entrò e il re gli disse: «Che cosa si deve fare a un uomo che il re vuole onorare?». Haman pensò in cuor suo: «Chi piú di me vorrebbe il re onorare?».

7 A nd Haman saith unto the king, `The man in whose honour the king hath delighted,

Haman rispose al re: «Per l'uomo che il re vuole onorare,

8 l et them bring in royal clothing that the king hath put on himself, and a horse on which the king hath ridden, and that the royal crown be put on his head,

si prenda la veste reale che il re ha indossato e il cavallo che il re ha montato, e si metta sulla sua testa una corona reale.

9 a nd to give the clothing and the horse into the hand of a man of the heads of the king, the chiefs, and they have clothed the man in whose honour the king hath delighted, and caused him to ride on the horse in a broad place of the city, and called before him: Thus it is done to the man in whose honour the king hath delighted.'

Si consegni la veste e il cavallo a uno dei principi piú nobili del re e si rivesta di quella veste l'uomo che il re vuole onorare; quindi lo si conduca a cavallo per le vie della città e si proclami davanti a lui: "Cosí si fa all'uomo che il re vuole onorare!"».

10 A nd the king saith to Haman, `Haste, take the clothing and the horse, as thou hast spoken, and do so to Mordecai the Jew, who is sitting in the gate of the king; there doth not fall a thing of all that thou hast spoken.'

Allora il re disse a Haman: «Presto, prendi la veste e il cavallo, come hai detto, e fa' cosí a Mardocheo il Giudeo, che siede alla porta del re; non tralasciare nulla di ciò che hai detto».

11 A nd Haman taketh the clothing, and the horse, and clothed Mordecai, and causeth him to ride in a broad place of the city, and calleth before him, `Thus it is done to the man in whose honour the king hath delighted.'

Haman prese dunque la veste e il cavallo, rivestí della veste Mardocheo e lo condusse a cavallo per le vie della città, proclamando davanti a lui: «Cosí si fa all'uomo che il re vuole onorare!».

12 A nd Mordecai turneth back unto the gate of the king, and Haman hath been hastened unto his house mourning, and with covered head,

Poi Mardocheo tornò alla porta del re, ma Haman si affrettò a tornare a casa sua, tutto addolorato e con il capo coperto.

13 a nd Haman recounteth to Zeresh his wife, and to all his friends, all that hath met him, and his wise men say to him, and Zeresh his wife, `If Mordecai of the seed of the Jews, before whom thou hast begun to fall, thou art not able for him, but dost certainly fall before him.'

Haman raccontò a sua moglie Zeresh e a tutti i suoi amici tutto ciò che gli era accaduto. Allora i suoi saggi e sua moglie Zeresh gli dissero: «Se Mardocheo davanti al quale tu hai cominciato a cadere è della stirpe dei Giudei, tu non riuscirai a vincere contro di lui, ma cadrai completamente davanti a lui».

14 T hey are yet speaking with him, and eunuchs of the king have come, and haste to bring in Haman unto the banquet that Esther hath made.

Essi stavano ancora parlando con lui, quando giunsero gli eunuchi del re, i quali si affrettarono a condurre Haman al banchetto che Ester aveva preparato.
