1 ` When Jehovah thy God doth bring thee in unto the land whither thou art going in to possess it, and He hath cast out many nations from thy presence, the Hittite, and the Girgashite, and the Amorite, and the Canaanite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite, seven nations more numerous and mighty than thou,

«Quando L'Eterno, il tuo DIO, ti avrà introdotto nel paese in cui entri per prenderne possesso, e avrà scacciato davanti a te molte nazioni: gli Hittei, i Ghirgasei, gli Amorei, i Cananei, i Perezei, gli Hivvei e i Gebusei, sette nazioni piú grandi e piú potenti di te,

2 a nd Jehovah thy God hath given them before thee, and thou hast smitten them -- thou dost utterly devote them -- thou dost not make with them a covenant, nor dost thou favour them.

e quando l'Eterno, il tuo DIO, le avrà date in tuo potere tu le sconfiggerai e le voterai al completo sterminio; non farai con esse alleanza, né userai con loro alcuna misericordia.

3 ` And thou dost not join in marriage with them; thy daughter thou dost not give to his son, and his daughter thou dost not take to thy son,

Non contrarrai matrimonio con loro. Non darai le tue figlie ai loro figli e non prenderai le loro figlie per i tuoi figli,

4 f or he doth turn aside thy son from after Me, and they have served other gods, and the anger of Jehovah hath burned against you, and hath destroyed thee hastily.

perché allontanerebbero i tuoi figli dal seguire me per servire altri dèi, e l'ira dell'Eterno si accenderebbe contro di voi e vi distruggerebbe subito.

5 ` But thus thou dost to them: their altars ye break down, and their standing pillars ye shiver, and their shrines ye cut down, and their graven images ye burn with fire;

Ma con loro vi comporterete così: demolirete i loro altari, spezzerete le loro colonne sacre, abbatterete i loro Ascerim e darete alle fiamme le loro immagini scolpite.

6 f or a holy people thou to Jehovah thy God; on thee hath Jehovah thy God fixed, to be to Him for a peculiar people, out of all the peoples who on the face of the ground.

Poiché tu sei un popolo consacrato all'Eterno, il tuo DIO; l'Eterno, il tuo DIO ti ha scelto per essere il suo tesoro particolare fra tutti i popoli che sono sulla faccia della terra.

7 ` Not because of your being more numerous than any of the peoples hath Jehovah delighted in you, and fixeth on you, for ye the least of all the peoples,

L'Eterno non ha riposto i suo amore su di voi né vi ha scelto, perché eravate piú numerosi di alcun altro popolo; eravate infatti il piú piccolo di tutti i popoli;

8 b ut because of Jehovah's loving you, and because of His keeping the oath which He hath sworn to your fathers, hath Jehovah brought you out by a strong hand, and doth ransom you from a house of servants, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

ma perché l'Eterno vi ama e perché ha voluto mantenere il giuramento fatto ai vostri padri, l'Eterno vi ha fatto uscire con mano potente e vi ha riscattati dalla casa di schiavitú, dalla mano del Faraone, re d'Egitto.

9 ` And thou hast known that Jehovah thy God He God, the faithful God, keeping the covenant, and the kindness, to those loving Him, and to those keeping His commands -- to a thousand generations,

Riconosci dunque che l'Eterno, il tuo DIO, DIO, il Dio fedele, che mantiene il suo patto e la sua benignità fino alla millesima generazione verso quelli che lo amano e osservano i suoi comandamenti,

10 a nd repaying to those hating Him, unto their face, to destroy them; He delayeth not to him who is hating Him -- unto his face, He repayeth to him --

ma rende prontamente a quelli che lo odiano facendoli perire; egli non ritarderà, ma renderà prontamente a chi lo odia.

11 a nd thou hast kept the command, and the statutes, and the judgments, which I am commanding thee to-day to do them.

Osserva dunque i comandamenti gli statuti e i decreti che oggi ti do, mettendoli in pratica.

12 ` And it hath been, because ye hear these judgments, and have kept, and done them, that Jehovah thy God hath kept to thee the covenant and the kindness which He hath sworn to thy fathers,

Così, se voi darete ascolto a queste leggi, e le osserverete e metterete in pratica, l'Eterno, il vostro DIO, manterrà con te il patto e la benignità che ha giurato ai tuoi padri.

13 a nd hath loved thee, and blessed thee, and multiplied thee, and hath blessed the fruit of thy womb, and the fruit of thy ground, thy corn, and thy new wine, and thine oil, the increase of thine oxen, and the wealth of thy flock, on the ground which He hath sworn to thy fathers to give to thee.

Egli ti amerà, ti benedirà e ti moltiplicherà, e benedirà il frutto del tuo grembo e il frutto del tuo suolo, il tuo frumento, il tuo mosto e il tuo olio, i parti delle tue vacche e delle tue pecore nel paese che giurò ai tuoi padri di darti.

14 ` Blessed art thou above all the peoples, there is not in thee a barren man or a barren woman -- nor among your cattle;

Tu sarai benedetto piú di tutti i popoli e non ci sarà in mezzo a te né uomo né donna sterile, e neppure fra il tuo bestiame.

15 a nd Jehovah hath turned aside from thee every sickness, and none of the evil diseases of Egypt (which thou hast known) doth He put on thee, and He hath put them on all hating thee.

L'Eterno allontanerà da te ogni malattia e non manderà su di te alcuno di quei funesti malanni dell'Egitto che hai conosciuto, ma li manderà su tutti quelli che ti odiano.

16 ` And thou hast consumed all the peoples whom Jehovah thy God is giving to thee; thine eye hath no pity on them, and thou dost not serve their gods, for a snare it to thee.

Sterminerai dunque tutti i popoli che l'Eterno, il tuo DIO, sta per dare in tuo potere; il tuo occhio non abbia pietà di loro, e non servire i loro dèi, perché ciò sarebbe per te un laccio.

17 ` When thou sayest in thine heart, These nations more numerous than I, how am I able to dispossess them? --

In cuor tuo potresti dire: "Queste nazioni sono piú numerose di me; come riuscirò io a scacciarle?".

18 t hou art not afraid of them; thou dost surely remember that which Jehovah thy God hath done to Pharaoh, and to all Egypt,

Non temerle, ma ricordati di ciò che l'Eterno, il tuo DIO, fece al Faraone e a tutti gli Egiziani;

19 t he great trials which thine eyes have seen, and the signs, and the wonders, and the strong hand, and the stretched-out arm, with which Jehovah thy God hath brought thee out; so doth Jehovah thy God to all the peoples of whose presence thou art afraid.

ricordati delle grandi prove che vedesti con i tuoi occhi, dei segni e dei prodigi, della mano potente e del braccio steso con i quali l'Eterno, il tuo DIO, ti fece uscire dall'Egitto; così farà l'Eterno, il tuo DIO, a tutti i popoli dei quali hai paura.

20 ` And also the locust doth Jehovah thy God send among them, till the destruction of those who are left, and of those who are hidden from thy presence;

Inoltre, l'Eterno, il tuo DIO, manderà contro di loro i calabroni, finché quei che sono rimasti e quei che si sono nascosti per paura di te siano periti.

21 t hou art not terrified by their presence, for Jehovah thy God in thy midst, a God great and fearful.

Non spaventarti di loro, perché l'Eterno, il tuo DIO, è in mezzo a te, un Dio grande e terribile.

22 ` And Jehovah thy God hath cast out these nations from thy presence little little, (thou art not able to consume them hastily, lest the beast of the field multiply against thee),

L'Eterno, il tuo DIO, scaccerà a poco a poco queste nazioni davanti a te; tu non riuscirai a distruggerle subito, perché altrimenti le fiere della campagna diventerebbero troppo numerose per te;

23 a nd Jehovah thy God hath given them before thee, and destroyed them -- a great destruction -- till their destruction;

ma l'Eterno, il tuo DIO, le darà in tuo potere, e le getterà in grande confusione finché siano sterminate.

24 a nd He hath given their kings into thy hand, and thou hast destroyed their name from under the heavens; no man doth station himself in thy presence till thou hast destroyed them.

Ti darà nelle mani i loro re e tu farai scomparire i loro nomi di sotto ai cieli; nessuno potrà resistere davanti a te, finché tu le abbia distrutte.

25 ` The graven images of their gods ye do burn with fire; thou dost not desire the silver and gold on them, nor hast thou taken to thyself, lest thou be snared by it, for the abomination of Jehovah thy God it;

Darai alle fiamme le immagini scolpite dei loro dèi; non desidererai l'oro o l'argento che è su di esse e non lo prenderai per te, altrimenti saresti preso nel laccio da questo, perché è una cosa abominevole per l'Eterno, il tuo DIO;

26 a nd thou dost not bring in an abomination unto thy house -- or thou hast been devoted like it; -- thou dost utterly detest it, and thou dost utterly abominate it; for it devoted.

e non introdurrai cosa abominevole in casa tua, perché saresti condannato alla distruzione come essa; la detesterai e l'abominerai totalmente, perché é una cosa votata alla distruzione».
