1 A nd two of the messengers come towards Sodom at even, and Lot is sitting at the gate of Sodom, and Lot seeth, and riseth to meet them, and boweth himself -- face to the earth,

Ora i due angeli giunsero a Sodoma verso sera, mentre Lot era seduto alla porta di Sodoma; come li vide egli si alzó per andar loro incontro e si prostrò con la faccia a terra,

2 a nd he saith, `Lo, I pray you, my lords, turn aside, I pray you, unto the house of your servant, and lodge, and wash your feet -- then ye have risen early and gone on your way;' and they say, `Nay, but in the broad place we do lodge.'

e disse: «Miei signori, vi prego, venite in casa del vostro servo, passatevi la notte e lavatevi i piedi; poi domattina potrete alzarvi presto e continuare il vostro cammino». Essi risposero: «No; passeremo la notte sulla piazza».

3 A nd he presseth on them greatly, and they turn aside unto him, and come in unto his house; and he maketh for them a banquet, and hath baked unleavened things; and they do eat.

Ma egli insistette così tanto che vennero da lui ed entrarono in casa sua. Quindi egli preparò loro un banchetto e cosse dei pani senza lievito, ed essi mangiarono.

4 B efore they lie down, the men of the city -- men of Sodom -- have come round about against the house, from young even unto aged, all the people from the extremity;

Ma prima che andassero a coricarsi, gli uomini della città, gli uomini di Sodoma, circondarono la casa, giovani e vecchi l'intera popolazione venuta da ogni dove;

5 a nd they call unto Lot and say to him, `Where the men who have come in unto thee to-night? bring them out unto us, and we know them.'

chiamarono Lot e gli dissero: «Dove sono gli uomini che sono venuti da te questa notte? Portaceli fuori. affinché li possiamo conoscere!».

6 A nd Lot goeth out unto them, to the opening, and the door hath shut behind him,

Lot uscì verso di loro davanti alla porta di casa, chiuse la porta dietro di sé e disse:

7 a nd saith, `Do not, I pray you, my brethren, do evil;

«Deh fratelli miei, non comportatevi in modo così malvagio!

8 l o, I pray you, I have two daughters, who have not known any one; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do to them as good in your eyes; only to these men do not anything, for therefore have they come in within the shadow of my roof.'

Sentite, io ho due figlie che non hanno conosciuto uomo; deh, lasciate che ve le porti fuori e fate loro quel che vi pare; ma non fate nulla a questi uomini, perché essi sono entrati sotto la protezione del mio tetto».

9 A nd they say, `Come nigh hither;' they say also, `This one hath come in to sojourn, and he certainly judgeth! now, we do evil to thee more than them;' and they press against the man, against Lot greatly, and come nigh to break the door.

Ma essi dissero: «fatti in là!». Poi continuarono: «Costui è venuto qui come straniero, e vuol far da giudice! Ora faremo a te peggio che a quelli!». E spingendo Lot con violenza si avvicinarono per sfondare la porta.

10 A nd the men put forth their hand, and bring in Lot unto them, into the house, and have shut the door;

Ma quegli uomini allungarono le loro mani e tirarono Lot in casa con loro, e chiusero la porta.

11 a nd the men who at the opening of the house they have smitten with blindness, from small even unto great, and they weary themselves to find the opening.

colpirono quindi di cecità la gente che era alla porta della casa, dal piú piccolo al piú grande, cosicché si stancarono nel tentativo i trovare la porta.

12 A nd the men say unto Lot, `Whom hast thou here still? son-in-law, thy sons also, and thy daughters, and all whom thou hast in the city, bring out from this place;

Allora quegli uomini dissero a Lot: «Chi altro hai tu qui? Fa' uscire da questo luogo i tuoi generi, i tuoi figli e le tue figlie, e chiunque tu abbia in città,

13 f or we are destroying this place, for their cry hath been great the face of Jehovah, and Jehovah doth send us to destroy it.'

poiché noi stiamo per distruggere questo luogo, perché il grido dei suoi abitanti è grande davanti all'Eterno e l'Eterno ci ha mandati a distruggerlo».

14 A nd Lot goeth out, and speaketh unto his sons-in-law, those taking his daughters, and saith, `Rise, go out from this place, for Jehovah is destroying the city;' and he is as mocking in the eyes of his sons-in-law.

Allora Lot uscì e parlò ai suoi generi che avevano sposato le sue figlie, e disse: «Levatevi, uscite da questo luogo, perché l'Eterno sta per distruggere la città». Ma ai generi parve che egli volesse scherzare.

15 A nd when the dawn hath ascended, then the messengers press upon Lot, saying, `Rise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters who are found present, lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city.'

Come spuntò l'alba, gli angeli sollecitarono Lot, dicendo: «Levati, prendi tua moglie e le tue figlie che si trovano qui, affinché tu non perisca nel castigo di questa città».

16 A nd he lingereth, and the men lay hold on his hand, and on the hand of his wife, and on the hand of his two daughters, through the mercy of Jehovah unto him, and they bring him out, and cause him to rest without the city.

Ma siccome egli si indugiava, quegli uomini presero per mano lui, sua moglie e le sue due figlie, perché l'Eterno aveva avuto misericordia di lui, lo fecero uscire e lo condussero in salvo fuori della città.

17 A nd it cometh to pass when he hath brought them out without, that he saith, `Escape for thy life; look not expectingly behind thee, nor stand thou in all the circuit; to the mountain escape, lest thou be consumed.'

Come essi li conducevano fuori uno di loro disse: «Fuggi per salvare la tua vita! Non guardare indietro e non ti fermare in alcun luogo della pianura; salvati al monte che tu non abbia a perire!».

18 A nd Lot saith unto them, `Not, I pray thee, my lord;

Ma Lot rispose loro: «No, mio signore!

19 l o, I pray thee, thy servant hath found grace in thine eyes, and thou dost make great thy kindness which thou hast done with me by saving my life, and I am unable to escape to the mountain, lest the evil cleave me, and I have died;

Ecco, il tuo servo ha trovato grazia agli occhi tuoi e tu hai usato grande misericordia verso di me, salvandomi la vita; ma io non riuscirò a raggiungere il monte prima che il disastro mi sopraggiunga ed io perisca.

20 l o, I pray thee, this city near to flee thither, and it little; let me escape, I pray thee, thither, (is it not little?) and my soul doth live.'

Ecco, questa città è abbastanza vicina per potervi arrivare, ed è piccola. Deh, lascia che io fugga là (non è essa piccola?), e così avrò salva la vita».

21 A nd he saith unto him, `Lo, I have accepted thy face also for this thing, without overthrowing the city which thou hast spoken;

L'angelo gli disse: «Ecco, io ti concedo anche questa richiesta: di non distruggere la città, di cui hai parlato.

22 h aste, escape thither, for I am not able to do anything till thine entering thither;' therefore hath he calleth the name of the city Zoar.

Affrettati, fuggi là, perché io non posso fare nulla finché tu vi sia giunto». Perciò quella città fu chiamata Tsoar.

23 T he sun hath gone out on the earth, and Lot hath entered into Zoar,

Il sole si levava sulla terra quando Lot arrivò a Tsoar.

24 a nd Jehovah hath rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from Jehovah, from the heavens;

Allora l'Eterno fece piovere dal cielo su Sodoma e Gomorra zolfo e fuoco, da parte dell'Eterno.

25 a nd He overthroweth these cities, and all the circuit, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which is shooting up from the ground.

Così egli distrusse quelle città, tutta la pianura, tutti gli abitanti della città e quanto cresceva sul suolo.

26 A nd his wife looketh expectingly from behind him, and she is -- a pillar of salt!

Ma la moglie di Lot si volse a guardare indietro e diventò una statua di sale.

27 A nd Abraham riseth early in the morning, unto the place where he hath stood the face of Jehovah;

Abrahamo si levò al mattino presto e andò al luogo dove si era fermato davanti all'Eterno;

28 a nd he looketh on the face of Sodom and Gomorrah, and on all the face of the land of the circuit, and seeth, and lo, the smoke of the land went up as smoke of the furnace.

poi guardò verso Sodoma e Gomorra e verso tutta la regione della pianura, ed ecco vide un fumo che si levava dalla terra, come il fumo di una fornace

29 A nd it cometh to pass, in God's destroying the cities of the circuit, that God remembereth Abraham, and sendeth Lot out of the midst of the overthrow in the overthrowing of the cities in which Lot dwelt.

Così avvenne che, quando DIO distrusse la città della pianura, DIO si ricordò di Abrahamo e fece allontanare Lot di mezzo al disastro, quando distrusse le città dove Lot aveva dimorato.

30 A nd Lot goeth up out of Zoar, and dwelleth in the mountain, and his two daughters with him, for he hath been afraid of dwelling in Zoar, and he dwelleth in a cave, he and his two daughters.

Poi lot uscì da Tsoar e andò ad abitare sul monte insieme con le sue due figlie, perché aveva paura di stare a Tsoar; e si stabilì in una caverna con le sue due figlie.

31 A nd the first-born saith unto the younger, `Our father old, and a man there is not in the earth to come in unto us, as the way of all the earth;

Ora la maggiore disse alla minore: «Nostro padre è vecchio, e non vi è piú alcun uomo nel paese che possa unirsi a noi, come si usa su tutta la terra.

32 c ome, we cause our father to drink wine, and lie with him, and preserve from our father -- a seed.'

vieni, facciamo bere del vino a nostro padre e corichiamoci con lui; così potremo assicurare una discendenza a nostro padre».

33 A nd they cause their father to drink wine on that night; and the first-born goeth in, and lieth with her father, and he hath not known in her lying down, or in her rising up.

Così quella stessa notte fecero bere del vino al loro padre; e la maggiore entrò e si coricò con suo padre: ed egli non si accorse né quando ella si coricò né quando si levò.

34 A nd it cometh to pass, on the morrow, that the first-born saith unto the younger, `Lo, I have lain yesterday-night with my father: we cause him to drink wine also to-night, and go thou in, lie with him, and we preserve from our father -- a seed.'

All'indomani la maggiore disse alla minore: «ecco, la notte scorsa io mi sono coricata con mio padre; Facciamogli bere del vino anche questa notte; poi tu entra e coricati con lui, affinché possiamo assicurare una discendenza a nostro padre».

35 A nd they cause their father to drink wine on that night also, and the younger riseth and lieth with him, and he hath not known in her lying down, or in her rising up.

Anche quella notte fecero bere del vino al loro padre, e la minore andò a coricarsi con lui; ed egli non si accorse né quando ella si coricò né quando si levò.

36 A nd the two daughters of Lot conceive from their father,

Così le due figlie di Lot rimasero incinte per mezzo del loro padre.

37 a nd the first-born beareth a son, and calleth his name Moab; he father of Moab unto this day;

La maggiore diede alla luce un figlio, al quale pose nome Moab. Questi è il padre dei Moabiti, che sussistono fino al giorno d'oggi.

38 a s to the younger, she also hath born a son, and calleth his name Ben-Ammi: he father of the Beni-Ammon unto this day.

Anche la minore partorì un figlio, al quale pose nome Ben-Ammi. Questi è il padre degli Ammoniti, ce sussistono fino al giorno d'oggi.
