1 A nd these the nations which Jehovah left, to try Israel by them, all who have not known all the wars of Canaan;

Queste sono le nazioni che l'Eterno lasciò allo scopo di mettere per mezzo loro alla prova Israele, cioè tutti quelli che non avevano conosciuto le guerre di Canaan:

2 ( only for the sake of the generations of the sons of Israel's knowing, to teach them war, only those who formerly have not known them) --

(questo aveva come unico scopo di far conoscere e insegnare la guerra ai figli d'Israele, almeno a quelli che non l'avevano conosciuta prima)

3 f ive princes of the Philistines, and all the Canaanite, and the Zidonian, and the Hivite inhabiting mount Lebanon, from mount Baal-Hermon unto the entering in of Hamath;

i cinque principi dei Filistei, tutti i Cananei, i Sidoni e gli Hivvei che abitavano sul monte Libano, dal monte Baal-Heon fino all'ingresso di Hamath.

4 a nd they are to prove Israel by them, to know whether they obey the commands of Jehovah that He commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.

Queste nazioni furono lasciate per mettere alla prova Israele, per vedere se essi avrebbero ubbidito ai comandamenti che l'Eterno aveva prescritto ai loro padri per mezzo di Mosè.

5 A nd the sons of Israel have dwelt in the midst of the Canaanite, the Hittite, and the Amorite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite,

Così i figli d'Israele abitarono in mezzo ai Cananei, agli Hittei, agli Amorei, ai Perezei, agli Hivvei e ai Gebusei;

6 a nd take their daughters to them for wives, and their daughters have given to their sons, and they serve their gods;

presero in moglie le loro figlie e diedero le proprie figlie in moglie ai loro figli, e servirono ai loro dèi.

7 a nd the sons of Israel do the evil thing in the eyes of Jehovah, and forget Jehovah their God, and serve the Baalim and the shrines.

Così i figli d'Israele fecero ciò che è male agli occhi dell'Eterno; dimenticarono l'Eterno, il loro DIO, e servirono i Baal e le Asceroth.

8 A nd the anger of Jehovah burneth against Israel, and He selleth them into the hand of Chushan-Rishathaim king of Aram-Naharaim, and the sons of Israel serve Chushan-Rishathaim eight years;

Perciò l'ira dell'Eterno si accese contro Israele, ed egli li diede nelle mani di Kushan-Rishathaim per otto anni.

9 a nd the sons of Israel cry unto Jehovah, and Jehovah raiseth a saviour to the sons of Israel, and he saveth them -- Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother;

Poi i figli d'Israele gridarono all'Eterno, e l'Eterno suscitò loro un liberatore Othniel, figlio di Kenaz, fratello minore di Caleb; ed egli li liberò.

10 a nd the Spirit of Jehovah is upon him, and he judgeth Israel, and goeth out to battle, and Jehovah giveth unto his hand Chushan-Rishathaim king of Aram, and strong is his hand against Chushan-Rishathaim;

Lo Spirito dell'Eterno fu sopra di lui, ed egli fu giudice d'Israele, uscì a combattere e l'Eterno gli diede nelle mani Kushan-Rishathaim re di Mesopotamia, e la sua mano fu potente contro Kushan-Rishathaim.

11 a nd the land resteth forty years. And Othniel son of Kenaz dieth,

Il paese ebbe riposo per quarant'anni; poi Othniel, figlio di Kenaz, morì.

12 a nd the sons of Israel add to do the evil thing in the eyes of Jehovah; and Jehovah strengtheneth Eglon king of Moab against Israel, because that they have done the evil thing in the eyes of Jehovah;

Ma i figli d'Israele ripresero a fare ciò che é male agli occhi dell'Eterno; allora l'Eterno rese forte Eglon, re di Moab, contro Israele, perché essi avevano fatto ciò che è male agli occhi dell'Eterno.

13 a nd he gathereth unto him the Bene-Ammon and Amalek, and goeth and smiteth Israel, and they possess the city of palms;

Eglon radunò attorno a sé i figli di Ammon e di Amalek, e andò e sconfisse Israele, e si impadronì della città delle palme.

14 a nd the sons of Israel serve Eglon king of Moab eighteen years.

Così i figli d'Israele furono servi di Eglon re di Moab per diciotto anni.

15 A nd the sons of Israel cry unto Jehovah, and Jehovah raiseth to them a saviour, Ehud son of Gera, a Benjamite (a man -- shut of his right hand), and the sons of Israel send by his hand a present to Eglon king of Moab;

Ma i figli d'Israele gridarono all'Eterno, e l'Eterno suscitò loro un liberatore, Ehud, figlio di Ghera, Beniaminita, che era mancino. I figli d'Israele mandarono per mezzo di lui il tributo a Eglon, re di Moab.

16 a nd Ehud maketh for himself a sword, and it hath two mouths (a cubit its length), and he girdeth it under his long robe on his right thigh;

Ehud si fece una spada a due tagli, lunga un cubito; e se la cinse sotto la veste, al fianco destro.

17 a nd he bringeth near the present to Eglon king of Moab, and Eglon a very fat man.

Poi portò il tributo a Eglon, re di Moab, che era uomo molto grasso.

18 A nd it cometh to pass, when he hath finished to bring near the present, that he sendeth away the people bearing the present,

Quando ebbe finito la presentazione del tributo, rimandò la gente che aveva portato il tributo.

19 a nd he himself hath turned back from the graven images which at Gilgal, and saith, `A secret word I have unto thee, O king;' and he saith, `Hush!' and go out from him do all those standing by him.

Ma egli dal luogo degli idoli presso Ghilgal tornó indietro, e disse: «O re, ho qualcosa da dirti in segreto». Il re disse: «Fate silenzio!». E tutti quelli che lo scortavano uscirono.

20 A nd Ehud hath come unto him, and he is sitting in the upper chamber of the wall which he hath for himself, and Ehud saith, `A word of God I have unto thee;' and he riseth from off the throne;

Allora Ehud si avvicinò al re (che era seduto da solo al fresco, nella sala di sopra). Ehud disse: «Ho una parola da dirti da parte di DIO». Così il re si alzò dal suo seggio;

21 a nd Ehud putteth forth his left hand, and taketh the sword from off his right thigh, and striketh it into his belly;

allora Ehud stese la mano sinistra, estrasse la spada dal suo fianco destro e gliela conficcò nel ventre.

22 a nd the haft also goeth in after the blade, and the fat shutteth on the blade, that he hath not drawn the sword out of his belly, and it goeth out at the fundament.

Anche l'elsa entrò dopo la lama; e il grasso si richiuse dietro la lama, perché egli non ritrasse la spada dal ventre del re; e i suoi intestini uscirono.

23 A nd Ehud goeth out at the porch, and shutteth the doors of the upper chamber upon him, and hath bolted;

Poi Ehud uscì nel portico, chiuse dietro di sé le porte della sala di sopra e le serrò a chiave.

24 a nd he hath gone out, and his servants have come in, and look, and lo, the doors of the upper chamber are bolted, and they say, `He is only covering his feet in the inner chamber of the wall.'

Quando fu uscito, vennero i servi a guardare ed ecco che le porte della sala di sopra erano chiuse a chiave; così dissero: «Certo egli fa i suoi bisogni nello stanzino della sala fresca».

25 A nd they stay till confounded, and lo, he is not opening the doors of the upper chamber, and they take the key, and open, and lo, their lord is fallen to the earth -- dead.

E aspettarono tanto da essere confusi; ma poiché non apriva le porte della sala essi presero la chiave ed aprirono; ed ecco che il loro signore giaceva a terra, morto.

26 A nd Ehud escaped during their tarrying, and hath passed by the images, and is escaped to Seirath.

Mentre essi indugiavano, Ehud ebbe tempo di fuggire, passò oltre il posto degli idoli e si mise in salvo nella Seirah.

27 A nd it cometh to pass, in his coming in, that he bloweth with a trumpet in the hill-country of Ephraim, and go down with him do the sons of Israel from the hill-country, and he before them;

Appena arrivato, suonò la tromba nella regione montuosa di Efraim. e i figli d'Israele scesero con lui dalla regione montuosa. ed egli si mise alla loro testa.

28 a nd he saith unto them, `Pursue after me, for Jehovah hath given your enemies, the Moabites, into your hand;' and they go down after him, and capture the passages of the Jordan towards Moab, and have not permitted a man to pass over.

E disse loro: «Seguitemi, perché l'Eterno vi ha dato nelle mani i Moabiti, vostri nemici». Quelli scesero dietro a lui si impadronirono dei guadi del Giordano che portavano a Moab e non lasciarono passare alcuno.

29 A nd they smite Moab at that time, about ten thousand men, all robust, and every one a man of valour, and not a man hath escaped,

In quel tempo sconfissero circa diecimila Moabiti, tutti robusti e valorosi non ne scampò neppure uno.

30 a nd Moab is humbled in that day under the hand of Israel; and the land resteth eighty years.

Così in quel giorno, Moab fu umiliato sotto la mano d'Israele, e il paese ebbe riposo per ottant'anni.

31 A nd after him hath been Shamgar son of Anath, and he smiteth the Philistines -- six hundred men -- with an ox-goad, and he saveth -- he also -- Israel.

Dopo Ehud, venne Shamgar figlio di Anath. Egli sconfisse seicento Filistei con un pungolo da buoi; anch'egli liberò Israele.
