1 A nd Jethro priest of Midian, father-in-law of Moses, heareth all that God hath done for Moses, and for Israel his people, that Jehovah hath brought out Israel from Egypt,

Or Jethro, sacerdote di Madian, suocero di Mosè, udì tutto ciò che DIO aveva fatto per Mosè e per Israele suo popolo: come l'Eterno aveva fatto uscire Israele dall'Egitto.

2 a nd Jethro, father-in-law of Moses, taketh Zipporah, wife of Moses, besides her parents,

Allora Jethro, suocero di Mosè, prese Sefora, moglie di Mosè,

3 a nd her two sons, of whom the name of the one Gershom, for he said, `a sojourner I have been in a strange land:'

che gli aveva rinviata, e i due figli di lei, di cui uno si chiamava Ghershom, (perché Mosè aveva detto: Sono stato ospite in terra straniera»)

4 a nd the name of the other Eliezer, for, `the God of my father for my help, and doth deliver me from the sword of Pharaoh.'

e l'atro Eliezer (perché aveva detto: Il DIO di mio padre è stato il mio aiuto e mi ha liberato dalla spada del Faraone»).

5 A nd Jethro, father-in-law of Moses, cometh, and his sons, and his wife, unto Moses, unto the wilderness where he is encamping -- the mount of God;

Jethro dunque, suocero di Mosè, venne da Mosè con i suoi figli e con sua moglie, nel deserto dove era accampato, al monte di Dio.

6 a nd he saith unto Moses, `I, thy father-in-law, Jethro, am coming unto thee, and thy wife, and her two sons with her.'

Egli aveva mandato a dire a Mosè: «Io Jethro, tuo suocero, vengo da te con tua moglie e i suoi due figli con lei».

7 A nd Moses goeth out to meet his father-in-law, and boweth himself, and kisseth him, and they ask one at another of welfare, and come into the tent;

Così Mosè uscì ad incontrare suo suocero, si inchinò e o baciò; si interrogarono a vicenda sulla loro salute, poi entrarono nella tenda.

8 a nd Moses recounteth to his father-in-law all that Jehovah hath done to Pharaoh, and to the Egyptians, on account of Israel, all the travail which hath found them in the way, and Jehovah doth deliver them.

Allora Mosè raccontò a suo suocero tutto ciò che l'Eterno aveva fatto al Faraone e agli Egiziani a motivo d'Israele, tutte le avversità incontrate durante il viaggio, e come l'Eterno li aveva liberati.

9 A nd Jethro rejoiceth for all the good which Jehovah hath done to Israel, whom He hath delivered from the hand of the Egyptians;

E Jethro si rallegrò di tutto il bene che l'Eterno aveva fatto a Israele, liberandolo dalla mano degli Egiziani.

10 a nd Jethro saith, `Blessed Jehovah, who hath delivered you from the hand of the Egyptians, and from the hand of Pharaoh -- who hath delivered this people from under the hand of the Egyptians;

Quindi Jethro disse: Benedetto sia l'Eterno, che vi ha liberati dalla mano degli Egiziani e dalla mano del Faraone, e ha liberato il popolo dal giogo degli Egiziani!

11 n ow I have known that Jehovah greater than all the gods, for in the thing they have acted proudly -- above them!'

Ora so che l'Eterno è piú grande di tutti gli dei; si, egli lo ha dimostrato loro, quando hanno agito orgogliosamente contro Israele».

12 A nd Jethro, father-in-law of Moses, taketh a burnt-offering and sacrifices for God; and Aaron cometh in, and all the elders of Israel, to eat bread with the father-in-law of Moses, before God.

Poi Jethro, suocero di Mosè, prese un olocausto e dei sacrifici per offrirli a DIO; e Aaronne e tutti gli anziani d'Israele vennero a mangiare col suocero di Mosè davanti a DIO.

13 A nd it cometh to pass on the morrow, that Moses sitteth to judge the people, and the people stand before Moses, from the morning unto the evening;

Or avvenne che, il giorno seguente, Mosè si assise per giudicare il popolo; e il popolo stette intorno a Mosè dal mattino fino alla sera.

14 a nd the father-in-law of Moses seeth all that he is doing to the people, and saith, `What this thing which thou art doing to the people? wherefore art thou sitting by thyself, and all the people standing by thee from morning till evening?'

Quando il suocero di Mosè vide tutto ciò che egli faceva per il popolo, disse: «Che è questo che tu fai col popolo? Perché siedi solo, e tutto il popolo ti sta attorno dal mattino fino alla sera?».

15 A nd Moses saith to his father-in-law, `Because the people come unto me to seek God;

Mosè rispose a suo suocero: «Perché il popolo viene da me per consultare DIO.

16 w hen they have a matter, it hath come unto me, and I have judged between a man and his neighbour, and made known the statutes of God, and His laws.'

Quando essi hanno un problema, vengono da me, e io giudico fra l'uno e l'altro e faccio loro conoscere gli statuti di DIO e le sue leggi».

17 A nd the father-in-law of Moses saith unto him, `The thing which thou art doing not good;

Ma il suocero di Mosè gli disse: «Ciò che tu fai non va bene.

18 t hou dost surely wear away, both thou, and this people which with thee, for the thing is too heavy for thee, thou art not able to do it by thyself.

Finirai senz'altro per esaurirti, tu e questo popolo che è con te, perché il compito è troppo arduo. Non puoi farcela da solo.

19 ` Now, hearken to my voice, I counsel thee, and God is with thee: be thou for the people over-against God, and thou hast brought in the things unto God;

Ora ascoltami; io ti darò un consiglio e DIO sia con te: Rappresenta tu il popolo davanti a DIO e porta a DIO i loro problemi.

20 a nd thou hast warned them the statutes and the laws, and hast made known to them the way in which they go, and the work which they do.

Insegna loro gli statuti e le leggi e mostra loro la via per la quale devono camminare e ciò che devono fare.

21 ` And thou -- thou dost provide out of all the people men of ability, fearing God, men of truth, hating dishonest gain, and hast placed over them, heads of thousands, heads of hundreds, heads of fifties, and heads of tens,

Ma scegli fra tutto il popolo degli uomini capaci che temano DIO, degli uomini fidati, che detestino il guadagno ingiusto, e stabiliscili sul popolo come capi di migliaia, capi di centinaia, capi di cinquantine e capi di diecine.

22 a nd they have judged the people at all times; and it hath come to pass, every great matter they bring in unto thee, and every small matter they judge themselves; and lighten it from off thyself, and they have borne with thee.

lascia che siano loro a giudicare il popolo in ogni tempo; essi riporteranno a te ogni problema di grande importanza, ma ogni piccolo problema lo decideranno loro. Così sarà piú facile per te, ed essi porteranno il peso con te.

23 I f thou dost this thing, and God hath commanded thee, then thou hast been able to stand, and all this people also goeth in unto its place in peace.'

Se tu fai questo, e così DIO ti ordina, potrai durare; e anche tutto questo popolo arriverà felicemente al luogo loro destinato».

24 A nd Moses hearkeneth to the voice of his father-in-law, and doth all that he said,

Mosè diede ascolto alla voce del suo suocero, e fece tutto ciò che egli aveva detto.

25 a nd Moses chooseth men of ability out of all Israel, and maketh them chiefs over the people, heads of thousands, heads of hundreds, heads of fifties, and heads of tens,

Così Mosè scelse fra tutto Israele degli uomini capaci e li stabilì capi del popolo: capi di migliaia, capi di centinaia, capi di cinquantine e capi di diecine.

26 a nd they have judged the people at all times; the hard matter they bring in unto Moses, and every small matter they judge themselves.

Così essi giudicavano il popolo in ogni tempo; le cause difficili le portavano a Mosè, ma ogni piccolo problema lo decidevano loro.

27 A nd Moses sendeth his father-in-law away, and he goeth away unto his own land.

Poi Mosè congedò suo suocero, il quale se ne tornò al suo paese.
