1 A man often reproved, hardening the neck, Is suddenly broken, and there is no healing.

L'uomo che irrigidisce il collo quando è ripreso, sarà improvvisamente spezzato senza alcun rimedio.

2 I n the multiplying of the righteous the people rejoice, And in the ruling of the wicked the people sigh.

Quando i giusti sono in autorità, il popolo si rallegra, ma quando domina l'empio, il popolo geme.

3 A man loving wisdom rejoiceth his father, And a friend of harlots destroyeth wealth.

L'uomo che ama la sapienza rallegra suo padre; ma chi frequenta le prostitute dissipa la sua ricchezza.

4 A king by judgment establisheth a land, And one receiving gifts throweth it down.

Il re rende stabile il paese con la giustizia, ma chi riceve regali lo manda in rovina.

5 A man taking a portion above his neighbour, Spreadeth a net for his own steps.

L'uomo che adula il suo prossimo tende una rete sui suoi passi.

6 I n the transgression of the evil a snare, And the righteous doth sing and rejoice.

Nel peccato di un uomo malvagio c'è un laccio, ma il giusto canta e si rallegra.

7 T he righteous knoweth the plea of the poor, The wicked understandeth not knowledge.

Il giusto si interessa della causa dei miseri, ma l'empio non comprende tale interesse.

8 M en of scorning ensnare a city, And the wise turn back anger.

Gli schernitori fomentano sedizioni in città, ma gli uomini saggi placano.

9 A wise man is judged by the foolish man, And he hath been angry, And he hath laughed, and there is no rest.

Se un uomo saggio viene a contesa con uno stolto, e lo stolto si adira e ride, non c'è pace.

10 M en of blood hate the perfect, And the upright seek his soul.

Gli uomini di sangue odiano chi è integro, ma gli uomini retti cercano di proteggere la sua vita.

11 A fool bringeth out all his mind, And the wise till afterwards restraineth it.

Lo stolto dà sfogo a tutta la sua ira ma il saggio la trattiene e la calma.

12 A ruler who is attending to lying words, All his ministers wicked.

Se un sovrano dà retta a parole menzognere, tutti i suoi ministri diventano empi.

13 T he poor and the man of frauds have met together, Jehovah is enlightening the eyes of them both.

Il povero e l'oppressore hanno questo in comune: l'Eterno illumina gli occhi di entrambi.

14 a king that is judging truly the poor, His throne for ever is established.

Il re che fa giustizia ai miseri in verità avrà il trono stabilito per sempre.

15 A rod and reproof give wisdom, And a youth let away is shaming his mother.

La verga e la riprensione danno sapienza; ma il fanciullo lasciato a se stesso fa vergogna a sua madre.

16 I n the multiplying of the wicked transgression multiplieth, And the righteous on their fall do look.

Quando gli empi aumentano, aumentano pure le trasgressioni, ma i giusti vedranno la loro rovina.

17 C hastise thy son, and he giveth thee comfort, Yea, he giveth delights to thy soul.

Correggi tuo figlio, egli ti darà conforto e procurerà delizie all'anima tua.

18 W ithout a Vision is a people made naked, And whoso is keeping the law, O his happiness!

Quando non c'è visione profetica il popolo diventa sfrenato, ma beato chi osserva la legge.

19 B y words a servant is not instructed though he understand, And there is nothing answering.

Un servo non si corregge solo a parole; anche se comprende non ubbidisce.

20 T hou hast seen a man hasty in his words! More hope of a fool than of him.

Hai visto un uomo precipitoso nel suo parlare? C'è piú speranza per uno stolto che per lui,

21 W hoso is bringing up his servant delicately, from youth, his latter end also he is continuator.

Se uno alleva delicatamente da fanciullo il suo servo, alla fine egli vorrà essere suo successore.

22 A n angry man stirreth up contention, And a furious man is multiplying transgression.

L'uomo iracondo fomenta contese e l'uomo collerico commette molti peccati.

23 T he pride of man humbleth him, And humility of spirit upholdeth honour.

L'orgoglio dell'uomo lo porta in basso, ma chi è umile di spirito otterrà gloria.

24 W hoso is sharing with a thief is hating his own soul, Execration he heareth, and telleth not.

Chi si fa socio di un ladro odia la sua vita. Egli ode il giuramento ma non denuncia nulla.

25 F ear of man causeth a snare, And the confident in Jehovah is set on high.

La paura dell'uomo costituisce un laccio, ma chi confida nell'Eterno è al sicuro.

26 M any are seeking the face of a ruler, And from Jehovah the judgment of each.

Molti cercano il favore del principe, ma la giustizia per ogni uomo viene dall'Eterno.

27 A n abomination to the righteous the perverse man, And an abomination to the wicked the upright in the way!

L'uomo iniquo è un abominio per i giusti, e chi cammina rettamente è un abominio per gli empi.
