1 A nd Eliphaz the Temanite answereth and saith: --

2 T o God is a man profitable, Because a wise man to himself is profitable?

«Può forse l'Uomo recare qualche beneficio a Dio? Certamente il saggio reca beneficio a se stesso.

3 I s it a delight to the Mighty One That thou art righteous? is it gain, That thou makest perfect thy ways?

Quale piacere ne riceve l'Onnipotente, se tu sei giusto, o quale guadagno ne ha, se la tua condotta è integra?

4 B ecause of thy reverence Doth He reason thee? He entereth with thee into judgment:

E' forse per la paura che ha di te che ti castiga e viene in giudizio con te?

5 I s not thy wickedness abundant? And there is no end to thine iniquities.

Non è piuttosto per la tua grande malvagità e per le tue innumerevoli colpe?

6 F or thou takest a pledge of thy brother for nought, And the garments of the naked Thou dost strip off.

Senza motivo infatti prendevi pegni dai tuoi fratelli e spogliavi gli ignudi delle loro vesti.

7 T hou causest not the weary to drink water, And from the hungry thou withholdest bread.

Non davi da bere acqua allo stanco e rifiutavi il pane all'affamato.

8 A s to the man of arm -- he hath the earth, And the accepted of face -- he dwelleth in it.

La terra apparteneva all'uomo potente e vi abitava l'uomo onorato.

9 W idows thou hast sent away empty, And the arms of the fatherless are bruised.

Rimandavi la vedova a mani vuote, e le braccia degli orfani erano spezzate.

10 T herefore round about thee snares, And trouble thee doth fear suddenly.

Ecco perché sei circondato ovunque da lacci e spaventi improvvisi ti turbano,

11 O r darkness -- thou dost not see, And abundance of waters doth cover thee.

oppure un'oscurità non ti permette di vedere e una piena di acque ti sommerge.

12 I s not God high heaven? And see the summit of the stars, That they are high.

Non è forse Dio nell'alto dei cieli? Guarda le stelle eccelse, quanto sono alte!

13 A nd thou hast said, `What -- hath God known? Through thickness doth He judge?

E tu dici: che cosa sa Dio? Può forse giudicare attraverso dense tenebre?

14 T hick clouds a secret place to Him, And He doth not see;' And the circle of the heavens He walketh habitually,

Fitte nubi lo coprono cosí non può vedere, e passeggia sulla volta dei cieli.

15 T he path of the age dost thou observe, That men of iniquity have trodden?

Vuoi tu seguire la via antica già percorsa da uomini malvagi,

16 W ho have been cut down unexpectedly, A flood is poured out on their foundation.

che furono portati via prima del tempo, e il cui fondamento fu spazzato via da un fiume, in piena?

17 T hose saying to God, `Turn aside from us,' And what doth the Mighty One to them?

Essi dicevano a Dio: Allontanati da noi! Che cosa ci può fare l'Onnipotente?

18 A nd he hath filled their houses good: (And the counsel of the wicked Hath been far from me.)

Eppure Dio aveva colmato le loro case di beni. Ma io mi tengo lontano dal consiglio degli empi.

19 S ee do the righteous and they rejoice, And the innocent mocketh at them,

I giusti vedono ciò e si rallegrano, e l'innocente si fa beffe di loro:

20 ` Surely our substance hath not been cut off, And their excellency hath fire consumed.'

sí certo, i nostri nemici sono distrutti, e il fuoco ne divora quel che resta.

21 A cquaint thyself, I pray thee, with Him, And be at peace, Thereby thine increase good.

Riconciliati dunque con Dio e sarai al sicuro; cosí avrai benessere.

22 R eceive, I pray thee, from His mouth a law, And set His sayings in thy heart.

Ricevi istruzioni dalla sua bocca e riponi le sue parole nel tuo cuore.

23 I f thou dost return unto the Mighty Thou art built up, Thou puttest iniquity far from thy tents.

Se ritorni all'Onnipotente, sarai ristabilito; se allontani dalle tue tende l'iniquità

24 S o as to set on the dust a defence, And on a rock of the valleys a covering.

e getti l'oro nella polvere e l'oro d'Ofir tra i sassi del torrente,

25 A nd the Mighty hath been thy defence, And silver strength to thee.

allora l'Onnipotente sarà il tuo oro, il tuo tesoro d'argento.

26 F or then on the Mighty thou delightest thyself, And dost lift up unto God thy face,

Poiché allora troverai il tuo diletto nell'Onnipotente e alzerai la faccia verso Dio.

27 T hou dost make supplication unto Him, And He doth hear thee, And thy vows thou completest.

Lo pregherai ed egli ti esaudirà, e tu adempirai i tuoi voti.

28 A nd thou decreest a saying, And it is established to thee, And on thy ways hath light shone.

Deciderai una cosa e ti riuscirà, e sul tuo cammino splenderà la luce.

29 F or they have made low, And thou sayest, `Lift up.' And the bowed down of eyes he saveth.

Quando ti umiliano, dirai: "L'innalzamento verrà". Egli soccorrerà l'umile

30 H e delivereth the not innocent, Yea, he hath been delivered By the cleanness of thy hands.

e libererà anche chi non è innocente sí, egli sarà liberato per la purità delle tue mani».
