1 A nd Eliphaz the Temanite answereth and saith: --

Então respondeu Elifaz, o temanita:

2 T o God is a man profitable, Because a wise man to himself is profitable?

Pode o homem ser de algum proveito a Deus? Antes a si mesmo é que o prudenté será proveitoso.

3 I s it a delight to the Mighty One That thou art righteous? is it gain, That thou makest perfect thy ways?

Tem o Todo-Poderoso prazer em que tu sejas justo, ou lucro em que tu faças perfeitos os teus caminhos?

4 B ecause of thy reverence Doth He reason thee? He entereth with thee into judgment:

É por causa da tua reverência que te repreende, ou que entra contigo em juízo?

5 I s not thy wickedness abundant? And there is no end to thine iniquities.

Não é grande a tua malícia, e sem termo as tuas iniqüidades?

6 F or thou takest a pledge of thy brother for nought, And the garments of the naked Thou dost strip off.

Pois sem causa tomaste penhôres a teus irmaos e aos nus despojaste dos vestidos.

7 T hou causest not the weary to drink water, And from the hungry thou withholdest bread.

Não deste ao cansado água a beber, e ao faminto retiveste o pão.

8 A s to the man of arm -- he hath the earth, And the accepted of face -- he dwelleth in it.

Mas ao poderoso pertencia a terra, e o homem acatado habitava nela.

9 W idows thou hast sent away empty, And the arms of the fatherless are bruised.

Despediste vazias as viúvas, e os braços dos órfãos foram quebrados.

10 T herefore round about thee snares, And trouble thee doth fear suddenly.

Por isso é que estás cercado de laços, e te perturba um pavor repentino,

11 O r darkness -- thou dost not see, And abundance of waters doth cover thee.

ou trevas de modo que nada podes ver, e a inundação de águas te cobre.

12 I s not God high heaven? And see the summit of the stars, That they are high.

Não está Deus na altura do céu? Olha para as mais altas estrelas, quão elevadas estão!

13 A nd thou hast said, `What -- hath God known? Through thickness doth He judge?

E dizes: Que sabe Deus? Pode ele julgar através da escuridão?

14 T hick clouds a secret place to Him, And He doth not see;' And the circle of the heavens He walketh habitually,

Grossas nuvens o encobrem, de modo que não pode ver; e ele passeia em volta da abóbada do céu.

15 T he path of the age dost thou observe, That men of iniquity have trodden?

Queres seguir a vereda antiga, que pisaram os homens iníquos?

16 W ho have been cut down unexpectedly, A flood is poured out on their foundation.

Os quais foram arrebatados antes do seu tempo; e o seu fundamento se derramou qual um rio.

17 T hose saying to God, `Turn aside from us,' And what doth the Mighty One to them?

Diziam a Deus: retira-te de nós; e ainda: Que é que o Todo-Poderoso nos pode fazer?

18 A nd he hath filled their houses good: (And the counsel of the wicked Hath been far from me.)

Contudo ele encheu de bens as suas casas. Mas longe de mim estejam os conselhos dos ímpios!

19 S ee do the righteous and they rejoice, And the innocent mocketh at them,

Os justos o vêem, e se alegram: e os inocentes escarnecem deles,

20 ` Surely our substance hath not been cut off, And their excellency hath fire consumed.'

dizendo: Na verdade são exterminados os nossos adversários, e o fogo consumiu o que deixaram.

21 A cquaint thyself, I pray thee, with Him, And be at peace, Thereby thine increase good.

Apega-te, pois, a Deus, e tem paz, e assim te sobrevirá o bem.

22 R eceive, I pray thee, from His mouth a law, And set His sayings in thy heart.

Aceita, peço-te, a lei da sua boca, e põe as suas palavras no teu coração.

23 I f thou dost return unto the Mighty Thou art built up, Thou puttest iniquity far from thy tents.

Se te voltares para o Todo-Poderoso, serás edificado; se lançares a iniqüidade longe da tua tenda,

24 S o as to set on the dust a defence, And on a rock of the valleys a covering.

e deitares o teu tesouro no pó, e o ouro de Ofir entre as pedras dos ribeiros,

25 A nd the Mighty hath been thy defence, And silver strength to thee.

então o Todo-Poderoso será o teu tesouro, e a tua prata preciosa.

26 F or then on the Mighty thou delightest thyself, And dost lift up unto God thy face,

Pois então te deleitarás no Todo-Poderoso, e levantarás o teu rosto para Deus.

27 T hou dost make supplication unto Him, And He doth hear thee, And thy vows thou completest.

Tu orarás a ele, e ele te ouvirá; e pagarás os teus votos.

28 A nd thou decreest a saying, And it is established to thee, And on thy ways hath light shone.

Também determinarás algum negócio, e ser-te-á firme, e a luz brilhará em teus caminhos.

29 F or they have made low, And thou sayest, `Lift up.' And the bowed down of eyes he saveth.

Quando te abaterem, dirás: haja exaltação! E Deus salvará ao humilde.

30 H e delivereth the not innocent, Yea, he hath been delivered By the cleanness of thy hands.

E livrará até o que não é inocente, que será libertado pela pureza de tuas mãos.
