1 A nd there is a word of Jehovah unto Jonah son of Amittai, saying:

Ora veio a palavra do Senhor a Jonas, filho de Amitai, dizendo:

2 ` Rise, go unto Nineveh, the great city, and proclaim against it that their wickedness hath come up before Me.'

Levanta-te, vai ã grande cidade de Nínive, e clama contra ela, porque a sua malícia subiu até mim.

3 A nd Jonah riseth to flee to Tarshish from the face of Jehovah, and goeth down Joppa, and findeth a ship going Tarshish, and he giveth its fare, and goeth down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the face of Jehovah.

Jonas, porém, levantou-se para fugir da presença do Senhor para Társis. E, descendo a Jope, achou um navio que ia para Társis; pagou, pois, a sua passagem, e desceu para dentro dele, para ir com eles para Társis, da presença do Senhor.

4 A nd Jehovah hath cast a great wind on the sea, and there is a great tempest in the sea, and the ship hath reckoned to be broken;

Mas o Senhor lançou sobre o mar um grande vento, e fez-se no mar uma grande tempestade, de modo que o navio estava a ponto de se despedaçar.

5 a nd the mariners are afraid, and cry each unto his god, and cast the goods that in the ship into the sea, to make light of them; and Jonah hath gone down unto the sides of the vessel, and he lieth down, and is fast asleep.

Então os marinheiros tiveram medo, e clamavam cada um ao seu deus, e alijaram ao mar a carga que estava no navio, para o aliviarem; Jonas, porém, descera ao porão do navio; e, tendo-se deitado, dormia um profundo sono.

6 A nd the chief of the company draweth near to him, and saith to him, `What -- to thee, O sleeper? rise, call unto thy God, it may be God doth bethink himself of us, and we do not perish.'

O mestre do navio, pois, chegou-se a ele, e disse-lhe: Que estás fazendo, ó tu que dormes? Levanta-te, clama ao teu deus; talvez assim ele se lembre de nós, para que não pereçamos.

7 A nd they say each unto his neighbour, `Come, and we cast lots, and we know on whose account this evil on us.' And they cast lots, and the lot falleth on Jonah.

E dizia cada um ao seu companheiro: Vinde, e lancemos sortes, para sabermos por causa de quem nos sobreveio este mal. E lançaram sortes, e a sorte caiu sobre Jonas.

8 A nd they say unto him, `Declare to us, we pray thee, on what account this evil on us? what thine occupation, and whence comest thou? what thy country, seeing thou art not of this people?'

Então lhe disseram: Declara-nos tu agora, por causa de quem nos sobreveio este mal. Que ocupação é a tua? Donde vens? Qual é a tua terra? E de que povo és tu?

9 A nd he saith unto them, `A Hebrew I, and Jehovah, God of the heavens, I am reverencing, who made the sea and the dry land.'

Respondeu-lhes ele: Eu sou hebreu, e temo ao Senhor, o Deus do céu, que fez o mar e a terra seca.

10 A nd the men fear a great fear, and say unto him, `What this thou hast done!' for the men have known that from the face of Jehovah he is fleeing, for he hath told them.

Então estes homens se encheram de grande temor, e lhe disseram: Que é isso que fizeste? pois sabiam os homens que fugia da presença do Senhor, porque ele lho tinha declarado.

11 A nd they say unto him, `What do we do to thee that the sea may cease from us, for the sea is more and more tempestuous?'

Ainda lhe perguntaram: Que te faremos nós, para que o mar se nos acalme? Pois o mar se ia tornando cada vez mais tempestuoso.

12 A nd he saith unto them, `Lift me up, and cast me into the sea, and the sea doth cease from you; for I know that on my account this great tempest upon you.'

Respondeu-lhes ele: Levantai-me, e lançai-me ao mar, e o mar se vos aquietará; porque eu sei que por minha causa vos sobreveio esta grande tempestade.

13 A nd the men row to turn back unto the dry land, and are not able, for the sea is more and more tempestuous against them.

Entretanto os homens se esforçavam com os remos para tornar a alcançar a terra; mas não podiam, porquanto o mar se ia embravecendo cada vez mais contra eles.

14 A nd they cry unto Jehovah, and say, `We pray Thee, O Jehovah, let us not, we pray Thee, perish for this man's life, and do not lay on us innocent blood, for Thou, Jehovah, as Thou hast pleased, Thou hast done.'

Por isso clamaram ao Senhor, e disseram: Nós te rogamos, ó Senhor, que não pereçamos por causa da vida deste homem, e que não ponhas sobre nós o sangue inocente; porque tu, Senhor, fizeste como te aprouve.

15 A nd they lift up Jonah, and cast him into the sea, and the sea ceaseth from its raging;

Então levantaram a Jonas, e o lançaram ao mar; e cessou o mar da sua fúria.

16 a nd the men fear Jehovah -- a great fear, and sacrifice a sacrifice to Jehovah, and vow vows.

Temeram, pois, os homens ao Senhor com grande temor; e ofereceram sacrifícios ao Senhor, e fizeram votos.

17 A nd Jehovah appointeth a great fish to swallow up Jonah, and Jonah is in the bowels of the fish three days and three nights.

Então o Senhor deparou um grande peixe, para que tragasse a Jonas; e esteve Jonas três dias e três noites nas entranhas do peixe.
