1 B etter a name than good perfume, And the day of death than the day of birth.

Melhor é o bom nome do que o melhor ungüento, e o dia da morte do que o dia do nascimento.

2 B etter to go unto a house of mourning, Than to go unto a house of banqueting, For that is the end of all men, And the living layeth unto his heart.

Melhor é ir ã casa onde há luto do que ir a casa onde há banquete; porque naquela se vê o fim de todos os homens, e os vivos o aplicam ao seu coração.

3 B etter sorrow than laughter, For by the sadness of the face the heart becometh better.

Melhor é a mágoa do que o riso, porque a tristeza do rosto torna melhor o coração.

4 T he heart of the wise in a house of mourning, And the heart of fools in a house of mirth.

O coração dos sábios está na casa do luto, mas o coração dos tolos na casa da alegria.

5 B etter to hear a rebuke of a wise man, Than a man to hear a song of fools,

Melhor é ouvir a repreensão do sábio do que ouvir alguém a canção dos tolos.

6 F or as the noise of thorns under the pot, So the laughter of a fool, even this vanity.

Pois qual o crepitar dos espinhos debaixo da panela, tal é o riso do tolo; também isso é vaidade.

7 S urely oppression maketh the wise mad, And a gift destroyeth the heart.

Verdadeiramente a opressão faz endoidecer até o sábio, e a peita corrompe o coração.

8 B etter the latter end of a thing than its beginning, Better the patient of spirit, than the haughty of spirit.

Melhor é o fim duma coisa do que o princípio; melhor é o paciente do que o arrogante.

9 B e not hasty in thy spirit to be angry, For anger in the bosom of fools resteth.

Não te apresses no teu espírito a irar-te, porque a ira abriga-se no seio dos tolos.

10 S ay not thou, `What was it, That the former days were better than these?' For thou hast not asked wisely of this.

Não digas: Por que razão foram os dias passados melhores do que estes; porque não provém da sabedoria esta pergunta.

11 W isdom good with an inheritance, And an advantage to those beholding the sun.

Tão boa é a sabedoria como a herança, e mesmo de mais proveito para os que vêem o sol.

12 F or wisdom a defense, money a defence, And the advantage of the knowledge of wisdom, She reviveth her possessors.

Porque a sabedoria serve de defesa, como de defesa serve o dinheiro; mas a excelência da sabedoria é que ela preserva a vida de quem a possui.

13 S ee the work of God, For who is able to make straight that which He made crooked?

Considera as obras de Deus; porque quem poderá endireitar o que ele fez torto?

14 I n a day of prosperity be in gladness, And in a day of evil consider. Also this over-against that hath God made, To the intent that man doth not find anything after him.

No dia da prosperidade regozija-te, mas no dia da adversidade considera; porque Deus fez tanto este como aquele, para que o homem nada descubra do que há de vir depois dele.

15 T he whole I have considered in the days of my vanity. There is a righteous one perishing in his righteousness, and there is a wrong-doer prolonging in his wrong.

Tudo isto vi nos dias da minha vaidade: há justo que perece na sua justiça, e há ímpio que prolonga os seus dias na sua maldade.

16 B e not over-righteous, nor show thyself too wise, why art thou desolate?

Não sejas demasiadamente justo, nem demasiadamente sábio; por que te destruirias a ti mesmo?

17 D o not much wrong, neither be thou a fool, why dost thou die within thy time?

Não sejas demasiadamente ímpio, nem sejas tolo; por que morrerias antes do teu tempo?

18 g ood that thou dost lay hold on this, and also, from that withdrawest not thy hand, for whoso is fearing God goeth out with them all.

Bom é que retenhas isso, e que também daquilo não retires a tua mão; porque quem teme a Deus escapa de tudo isso.

19 T he wisdom giveth strength to a wise man, more than wealth the rulers who have been in a city.

A sabedoria fortalece ao sábio mais do que dez governadores que haja na cidade.

20 B ecause there is not a righteous man on earth that doth good and sinneth not.

Pois não há homem justo sobre a terra, que faça o bem, e nunca peque.

21 A lso to all the words that they speak give not thy heart, that thou hear not thy servant reviling thee.

Não escutes a todas as palavras que se disserem, para que não venhas a ouvir o teu servo amaldiçoar-te;

22 F or many times also hath thy heart known that thou thyself also hast reviled others.

pois tu sabes também que muitas vezes tu amaldiçoaste a outros.

23 A ll this I have tried by wisdom; I have said, `I am wise,' and it far from me.

Tudo isto provei-o pela sabedoria; e disse: Far-me-ei sábio; porém a sabedoria ainda ficou longe de mim.

24 F ar off that which hath been, and deep, deep, who doth find it?

Longe está o que já se foi, e profundíssimo; quem o poderá achar?

25 I have turned round, also my heart, to know and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and reason, and to know the wrong of folly, and of foolishness the madness.

Eu me volvi, e apliquei o meu coração para saber, e inquirir, e buscar a sabedoria e a razão de tudo, e para conhecer que a impiedade é insensatez e que a estultícia é loucura.

26 A nd I am finding more bitter than death, the woman whose heart nets and snares, her hands bands; the good before God escapeth from her, but the sinner is captured by her.

E eu achei uma coisa mais amarga do que a morte, a mulher cujo coração são laços e redes, e cujas mãos são grilhões; quem agradar a Deus escapará dela; mas o pecador virá a ser preso por ela.

27 S ee, this I have found, said the Preacher, one to one, to find out the reason

Vedes aqui, isto achei, diz o pregador, conferindo uma coisa com a outra para achar a causa;

28 ( that still my soul had sought, and I had not found), One man, a teacher, I have found, and a woman among all these I have not found.

causa que ainda busco, mas não a achei; um homem entre mil achei eu, mas uma mulher entre todas, essa não achei.

29 S ee, this alone I have found, that God made man upright, and they -- they have sought out many devices.

Eis que isto tão-somente achei: que Deus fez o homem reto, mas os homens buscaram muitos artifícios.
