1 A nd Job answereth and saith: --

Então Jó respondeu:

2 H ear ye diligently my word, And this is your consolation.

Ouvi atentamente as minhas palavras; seja isto a vossa consolação.

3 B ear with me, and I speak, And after my speaking -- ye may deride.

Sofrei-me, e eu falarei; e, havendo eu falado, zombai.

4 I -- to man my complaint? and if, wherefore May not my temper become short?

É porventura do homem que eu me queixo? Mas, ainda que assim fosse, não teria motivo de me impacientar?

5 T urn unto me, and be astonished, And put hand to mouth.

Olhai para mim, e pasmai, e ponde a mão sobre a boca.

6 Y ea, if I have remembered, then I have been troubled. And my flesh hath taken fright.

Quando me lembro disto, me perturbo, e a minha carne estremece de horror.

7 W herefore do the wicked live? They have become old, Yea, they have been mighty in wealth.

Por que razão vivem os ímpios, envelhecem, e ainda se robustecem em poder?

8 T heir seed is established, Before their face with them, And their offspring before their eyes.

Os seus filhos se estabelecem ã vista deles, e os seus descendentes perante os seus olhos.

9 T heir houses peace without fear, Nor a rod of God upon them.

As suas casas estão em paz, sem temor, e a vara de Deus não está sobre eles.

10 H is bullock hath eaten corn, and doth not loath. His cow bringeth forth safely, And doth not miscarry.

O seu touro gera, e não falha; pare a sua vaca, e não aborta.

11 T hey send forth as a flock their sucklings, And their children skip,

Eles fazem sair os seus pequeninos, como a um rebanho, e suas crianças andam saltando.

12 T hey lift up at timbrel and harp, And rejoice at the sound of an organ.

Levantam a voz, ao som do tamboril e da harpa, e regozijam-se ao som da flauta.

13 T hey wear out in good their days, And in a moment Sheol go down.

Na prosperidade passam os seus dias, e num momento descem ao Seol.

14 A nd they say to God, `Turn aside from us, And the knowledge of Thy ways We have not desired.

Eles dizem a Deus: retira-te de nós, pois não desejamos ter conhecimento dos teus caminhos.

15 W hat the Mighty One that we serve Him? And what do we profit when we meet with Him?'

Que é o Todo-Poderoso, para que nós o sirvamos? E que nos aproveitará, se lhe fizermos orações?

16 L o, not in their hand their good, (The counsel of the wicked Hath been far from me.)

Vede, porém, que eles não têm na mão a prosperidade; esteja longe de mim o conselho dos ímpios!

17 H ow oft is the lamp of the wicked extinguished, And come on them doth their calamity? Pangs He apportioneth in His anger.

Quantas vezes sucede que se apague a lâmpada dos ímpios? que lhes sobrevenha a sua destruição? que Deus na sua ira lhes reparta dores?

18 T hey are as straw before wind, And as chaff a hurricane hath stolen away,

que eles sejam como a palha diante do vento, e como a pragana, que o redemoinho arrebata?

19 G od layeth up for his sons his sorrow, He giveth recompense unto him -- and he knoweth.

Deus, dizeis vós, reserva a iniqüidade do pai para seus filhos, mas é a ele mesmo que Deus deveria punir, para que o conheça.

20 H is own eyes see his destruction, And of the wrath of the Mighty he drinketh.

Vejam os seus próprios olhos a sua ruina, e beba ele do furor do Todo-Poderoso.

21 F or what his delight in his house after him, And the number of his months cut off?

Pois, que lhe importa a sua casa depois de morto, quando lhe for cortado o número dos seus meses?

22 T o God doth teach knowledge, And He the high doth judge?

Acaso se ensinará ciência a Deus, a ele que julga os excelsos?

23 T his dieth in his perfect strength, Wholly at ease and quiet.

Um morre em plena prosperidade, inteiramente sossegado e tranqüilo;

24 H is breasts have been full of milk, And marrow his bones doth moisten.

com os seus baldes cheios de leite, e a medula dos seus ossos umedecida.

25 A nd this dieth with a bitter soul, And have not eaten with gladness.

Outro, ao contrário, morre em amargura de alma, não havendo provado do bem.

26 T ogether -- on the dust they lie down, And the worm doth cover them over.

Juntamente jazem no pó, e os vermes os cobrem.

27 L o, I have known your thoughts, And the devices against me ye do wrongfully.

Eis que conheço os vossos pensamentos, e os maus intentos com que me fazeis injustiça.

28 F or ye say, `Where the house of the noble? And where the tent -- The tabernacles of the wicked?'

Pois dizeis: Onde está a casa do príncipe, e onde a tenda em que morava o ímpio?

29 H ave ye not asked those passing by the way? And their signs do ye not know?

Porventura não perguntastes aos viandantes? e não aceitais o seu testemunho,

30 T hat to a day of calamity is the wicked spared. To a day of wrath they are brought.

de que o mau é preservado no dia da destruição, e poupado no dia do furor?

31 W ho doth declare to his face his way? And that which he hath done, Who doth give recompence to him?

Quem acusará diante dele o seu caminho? e quem lhe dará o pago do que fez?

32 A nd he -- to the graves he is brought. And over the heap a watch is kept.

Ele é levado para a sepultura, e vigiam-lhe o túmulo.

33 S weet to him have been the clods of the valley, And after him every man he draweth, And before him there is no numbering.

Os torrões do vale lhe são doces, e o seguirão todos os homens, como ele o fez aos inumeráveis que o precederam.

34 A nd how do ye comfort me vanity, And in your answers hath been left trespass?

Como, pois, me ofereceis consolações vãs, quando nas vossas respostas só resta falsidade?
