1 E ntão Jó respondeu:

And Job answereth and saith: --

2 O uvi atentamente as minhas palavras; seja isto a vossa consolação.

Hear ye diligently my word, And this is your consolation.

3 S ofrei-me, e eu falarei; e, havendo eu falado, zombai.

Bear with me, and I speak, And after my speaking -- ye may deride.

4 É porventura do homem que eu me queixo? Mas, ainda que assim fosse, não teria motivo de me impacientar?

I -- to man my complaint? and if, wherefore May not my temper become short?

5 O lhai para mim, e pasmai, e ponde a mão sobre a boca.

Turn unto me, and be astonished, And put hand to mouth.

6 Q uando me lembro disto, me perturbo, e a minha carne estremece de horror.

Yea, if I have remembered, then I have been troubled. And my flesh hath taken fright.

7 P or que razão vivem os ímpios, envelhecem, e ainda se robustecem em poder?

Wherefore do the wicked live? They have become old, Yea, they have been mighty in wealth.

8 O s seus filhos se estabelecem ã vista deles, e os seus descendentes perante os seus olhos.

Their seed is established, Before their face with them, And their offspring before their eyes.

9 A s suas casas estão em paz, sem temor, e a vara de Deus não está sobre eles.

Their houses peace without fear, Nor a rod of God upon them.

10 O seu touro gera, e não falha; pare a sua vaca, e não aborta.

His bullock hath eaten corn, and doth not loath. His cow bringeth forth safely, And doth not miscarry.

11 E les fazem sair os seus pequeninos, como a um rebanho, e suas crianças andam saltando.

They send forth as a flock their sucklings, And their children skip,

12 L evantam a voz, ao som do tamboril e da harpa, e regozijam-se ao som da flauta.

They lift up at timbrel and harp, And rejoice at the sound of an organ.

13 N a prosperidade passam os seus dias, e num momento descem ao Seol.

They wear out in good their days, And in a moment Sheol go down.

14 E les dizem a Deus: retira-te de nós, pois não desejamos ter conhecimento dos teus caminhos.

And they say to God, `Turn aside from us, And the knowledge of Thy ways We have not desired.

15 Q ue é o Todo-Poderoso, para que nós o sirvamos? E que nos aproveitará, se lhe fizermos orações?

What the Mighty One that we serve Him? And what do we profit when we meet with Him?'

16 V ede, porém, que eles não têm na mão a prosperidade; esteja longe de mim o conselho dos ímpios!

Lo, not in their hand their good, (The counsel of the wicked Hath been far from me.)

17 Q uantas vezes sucede que se apague a lâmpada dos ímpios? que lhes sobrevenha a sua destruição? que Deus na sua ira lhes reparta dores?

How oft is the lamp of the wicked extinguished, And come on them doth their calamity? Pangs He apportioneth in His anger.

18 q ue eles sejam como a palha diante do vento, e como a pragana, que o redemoinho arrebata?

They are as straw before wind, And as chaff a hurricane hath stolen away,

19 D eus, dizeis vós, reserva a iniqüidade do pai para seus filhos, mas é a ele mesmo que Deus deveria punir, para que o conheça.

God layeth up for his sons his sorrow, He giveth recompense unto him -- and he knoweth.

20 V ejam os seus próprios olhos a sua ruina, e beba ele do furor do Todo-Poderoso.

His own eyes see his destruction, And of the wrath of the Mighty he drinketh.

21 P ois, que lhe importa a sua casa depois de morto, quando lhe for cortado o número dos seus meses?

For what his delight in his house after him, And the number of his months cut off?

22 A caso se ensinará ciência a Deus, a ele que julga os excelsos?

To God doth teach knowledge, And He the high doth judge?

23 U m morre em plena prosperidade, inteiramente sossegado e tranqüilo;

This dieth in his perfect strength, Wholly at ease and quiet.

24 c om os seus baldes cheios de leite, e a medula dos seus ossos umedecida.

His breasts have been full of milk, And marrow his bones doth moisten.

25 O utro, ao contrário, morre em amargura de alma, não havendo provado do bem.

And this dieth with a bitter soul, And have not eaten with gladness.

26 J untamente jazem no pó, e os vermes os cobrem.

Together -- on the dust they lie down, And the worm doth cover them over.

27 E is que conheço os vossos pensamentos, e os maus intentos com que me fazeis injustiça.

Lo, I have known your thoughts, And the devices against me ye do wrongfully.

28 P ois dizeis: Onde está a casa do príncipe, e onde a tenda em que morava o ímpio?

For ye say, `Where the house of the noble? And where the tent -- The tabernacles of the wicked?'

29 P orventura não perguntastes aos viandantes? e não aceitais o seu testemunho,

Have ye not asked those passing by the way? And their signs do ye not know?

30 d e que o mau é preservado no dia da destruição, e poupado no dia do furor?

That to a day of calamity is the wicked spared. To a day of wrath they are brought.

31 Q uem acusará diante dele o seu caminho? e quem lhe dará o pago do que fez?

Who doth declare to his face his way? And that which he hath done, Who doth give recompence to him?

32 E le é levado para a sepultura, e vigiam-lhe o túmulo.

And he -- to the graves he is brought. And over the heap a watch is kept.

33 O s torrões do vale lhe são doces, e o seguirão todos os homens, como ele o fez aos inumeráveis que o precederam.

Sweet to him have been the clods of the valley, And after him every man he draweth, And before him there is no numbering.

34 C omo, pois, me ofereceis consolações vãs, quando nas vossas respostas só resta falsidade?

And how do ye comfort me vanity, And in your answers hath been left trespass?
