1 O ra, digo que por todo o tempo em que o herdeiro é menino, em nada difere de um servo, ainda que seja senhor de tudo;

And I say, so long time as the heir is a babe, he differeth nothing from a servant -- being lord of all,

2 m as está debaixo de tutores e curadores até o tempo determinado pelo pai.

but is under tutors and stewards till the time appointed of the father,

3 A ssim também nós, quando éramos meninos, estávamos reduzidos ã servidão debaixo dos rudimentos do mundo;

so also we, when we were babes, under the elements of the world were in servitude,

4 m as, vindo a plenitude dos tempos, Deus enviou seu Filho, nascido de mulher, nascido debaixo de lei,

and when the fulness of time did come, God sent forth His Son, come of a woman, come under law,

5 p ara resgatar os que estavam debaixo de lei, a fim de recebermos a adoção de filhos.

that those under law he may redeem, that the adoption of sons we may receive;

6 E , porque sois filhos, Deus enviou aos nossos corações o Espírito de seu Filho, que clama: Aba, Pai.

and because ye are sons, God did send forth the spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying, `Abba, Father!'

7 P ortanto já não és mais servo, mas filho; e se és filho, és também herdeiro por Deus.

so that thou art no more a servant, but a son, and if a son, also an heir of God through Christ.

8 O utrora, quando não conhecíeis a Deus, servíeis aos que por natureza não são deuses;

But then, indeed, not having known God, ye were in servitude to those not by nature gods,

9 a gora, porém, que já conheceis a Deus, ou, melhor, sendo conhecidos por Deus, como tornais outra vez a esses rudimentos fracos e pobres, aos quais de novo quereis servir?

and now, having known God -- and rather being known by God -- how turn ye again unto the weak and poor elements to which anew ye desire to be in servitude?

10 G uardais dias, e meses, e tempos, e anos.

days ye observe, and months, and times, and years!

11 T emo a vosso respeito não haja eu trabalhado em vão entre vós.

I am afraid of you, lest in vain I did labour toward you.

12 I rmãos, rogo-vos que vos torneis como eu, porque também eu me tornei como vós. Nenhum mal me fizestes;

Become as I -- because I also as ye brethren, I beseech you; to me ye did no hurt,

13 e vós sabeis que por causa de uma enfermidade da carne vos anunciei o evangelho a primeira vez,

and ye have known that through infirmity of the flesh I did proclaim good news to you at the first,

14 e aquilo que na minha carne era para vós uma tentação, não o desprezastes nem o repelistes, antes me recebestes como a um anjo de Deus, mesmo como a Cristo Jesus.

and my trial that in my flesh ye did not despise nor reject, but as a messenger of God ye did receive me -- as Christ Jesus;

15 O nde está, pois, aquela vossa satisfação? Porque vos dou testemunho de que, se possível fora, teríeis arrancado os vossos olhos, e mos teríeis dado.

what then was your happiness? for I testify to you, that if possible, your eyes having plucked out, ye would have given to me;

16 T ornei-me acaso vosso inimigo, porque vos disse a verdade?

so that your enemy have I become, being true to you?

17 E les vos procuram zelosamente não com bons motivos, mas querem vos excluir, para que zelosamente os procureis a eles.

they are zealous for you -- not well, but they wish to shut us out, that for them ye may be zealous;

18 N o que é bom, é bom serdes sempre procurados, e não só quando estou presente convosco.

and good to be zealously regarded, in what is good, at all times, and not only in my being present with you;

19 M eus filhinhos, por quem de novo sinto as dores de parto, até que Cristo seja formado em vós;

my little children, of whom again I travail in birth, till Christ may be formed in you,

20 e u bem quisera estar presente convosco agora, e mudar o tom da minha voz; porque estou perplexo a vosso respeito.

and I was wishing to be present with you now, and to change my voice, because I am in doubt about you.

21 D izei-me, os que quereis estar debaixo da lei, não ouvis vós a lei?

Tell me, ye who are willing to be under law, the law do ye not hear?

22 P orque está escrito que Abraão teve dois filhos, um da escrava, e outro da livre.

for it hath been written, that Abraham had two sons, one by the maid-servant, and one by the free-woman,

23 T odavia o que era da escrava nasceu segundo a carne, mas, o que era da livre, por promessa.

but he who of the maid-servant, according to flesh hath been, and he who of the free-woman, through the promise;

24 O que se entende por alegoria: pois essas mulheres são dois pactos; um do monte Sinai, que dá ã luz filhos para a servidão, e que é Agar.

which things are allegorized, for these are the two covenants: one, indeed, from mount Sinai, to servitude bringing forth, which is Hagar;

25 O ra, esta Agar é o monte Sinai na Arábia e corresponde ã Jerusalém atual, pois é escrava com seus filhos.

for this Hagar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and doth correspond to the Jerusalem that now, and is in servitude with her children,

26 M as a Jerusalém que é de cima é livre; a qual é nossa mãe.

and the Jerusalem above is the free-woman, which is mother of us all,

27 P ois está escrito: Alegra-te, estéril, que não dás ã luz; esforça-te e clama, tu que não estás de parto; porque mais são os filhos da desolada do que os da que tem marido.

for it hath been written, `Rejoice, O barren, who art not bearing; break forth and cry, thou who art not travailing, because many the children of the desolate -- more than of her having the husband.'

28 O ra vós, irmãos, sois filhos da promessa, como Isaque.

And we, brethren, as Isaac, are children of promise,

29 M as, como naquele tempo o que nasceu segundo a carne perseguia ao que nasceu segundo o Espírito, assim é também agora.

but as then he who was born according to the flesh did persecute him according to the spirit, so also now;

30 Q ue diz, porém, a Escritura? Lança fora a escrava e seu filho, porque de modo algum o filho da escrava herdará com o filho da livre.

but what saith the Writing? `Cast forth the maid-servant and her son, for the son of the maid-servant may not be heir with the son of the free-woman;'

31 P elo que, irmãos, não somos filhos da escrava, mas da livre.

then, brethren, we are not a maid-servant's children, but the free-woman's.
