1 M ais digno de ser escolhido é o bom nome do que as muitas riquezas; e o favor é melhor do que a prata e o ouro.

A name is chosen rather than much wealth, Than silver and than gold -- good grace.

2 O rico e o pobre se encontram; quem os faz a ambos é o Senhor.

Rich and poor have met together, The Maker of them all Jehovah.

3 O prudente vê o perigo e esconde-se; mas os simples passam adiante e sofrem a pena.

The prudent hath seen the evil, and is hidden, And the simple have passed on, and are punished.

4 O galardão da humildade e do temor do Senhor é riquezas, e honra e vida.

The end of humility the fear of Jehovah, Riches, and honour, and life.

5 E spinhos e laços há no caminho do perverso; o que guarda a sua alma retira-se para longe deles.

Thorns -- snares in the way of the perverse, Whoso is keeping his soul is far from them.

6 I nstrui o menino no caminho em que deve andar, e até quando envelhecer não se desviará dele.

Give instruction to a youth about his way, Even when he is old he turneth not from it.

7 O rico domina sobre os pobres; e o que toma emprestado é servo do que empresta.

The rich over the poor ruleth, And a servant the borrower to the lender.

8 O que semear a perversidade segará males; e a vara da sua indignação falhará.

Whoso is sowing perverseness reapeth sorrow, And the rod of his anger weareth out.

9 Q uem vê com olhos bondosos será abençoado; porque dá do seu pão ao pobre.

The good of eye -- he is blessed, For he hath given of his bread to the poor.

10 L ança fora ao escarnecedor, e a contenda se irá; cessarao a rixa e a injúria.

Cast out a scorner -- and contention goeth out, And strife and shame cease.

11 O que ama a pureza do coração, e que tem graça nos seus lábios, terá por seu amigo o rei.

Whoso is loving cleanness of heart, Grace his lips, a king his friend.

12 O s olhos do Senhor preservam o que tem conhecimento; mas ele transtorna as palavras do prevaricador.

The eyes of Jehovah have kept knowledge, And He overthroweth the words of the treacherous.

13 D iz o preguiçoso: um leão está lá fora; serei morto no meio das ruas.

The slothful hath said, `A lion without, In the midst of the broad places I am slain.'

14 C ova profunda é a boca da adúltera; aquele contra quem o Senhor está irado cairá nela.

A deep pit the mouth of strange women, The abhorred of Jehovah falleth there.

15 A estultícia está ligada ao coração do menino; mas a vara da correção a afugentará dele.

Folly is bound up in the heart of a youth, The rod of chastisement putteth it far from him.

16 O que para aumentar o seu lucro oprime o pobre, e dá ao rico, certamente chegará

He is oppressing the poor to multiply to him, He is giving to the rich -- only to want.

17 I nclina o teu ouvido e ouve as palavras dos sábios, e aplica o teu coração ao meu conhecimento.

Incline thine ear, and hear words of the wise, And thy heart set to my knowledge,

18 P orque será coisa suave, se os guardares no teu peito, se estiverem todos eles prontos nos teus lábios.

For they are pleasant when thou dost keep them in thy heart, They are prepared together for thy lips.

19 P ara que a tua confiança esteja no senhor, a ti tos fiz saber hoje, sim, a ti mesmo.

That thy trust may be in Jehovah, I caused thee to know to-day, even thou.

20 P orventura não te escrevi excelentes coisas acerca dos conselhos e do conhecimento,

Have I not written to thee three times With counsels and knowledge?

21 p ara te fazer saber a certeza das palavras de verdade, para que possas responder com palavras de verdade aos que te enviarem?

To cause thee to know the certainty of sayings of truth, To return sayings of truth to those sending thee.

22 N ão roubes ao pobre, porque é pobre; nem oprimas ao aflito na porta;

Rob not the poor because he poor, And bruise not the afflicted in the gate.

23 p orque o Senhor defenderá a sua causa em juízo, e aos que os roubam lhes tirará a vida.

For Jehovah pleadeth their cause, And hath spoiled the soul of their spoilers.

24 N ão faças amizade com o iracundo; nem andes com o homem colérico;

Shew not thyself friendly with an angry man, And with a man of fury go not in,

25 p ara que não aprendas as suas veredas, e tomes um laço para a tua alma.

Lest thou learn his paths, And have received a snare to thy soul.

26 N ão estejas entre os que se comprometem, que ficam por fiadores de dívidas.

Be not thou among those striking hands, Among sureties burdens.

27 S e não tens com que pagar, por que tirariam a tua cama de debaixo de ti?

If thou hast nothing to pay, Why doth he take thy bed from under thee?

28 N ão removas os limites antigos que teus pais fixaram.

Remove not a border of olden times, That thy fathers have made.

29 V ês um homem hábil na sua obrar? esse perante reis assistirá; e não assistirá perante homens obscuros.

Hast thou seen a man speedy in his business? Before kings he doth station himself, He stations not himself before obscure men!
