1 O ra, ouvindo os adversários de Judá e de Benjamim que os que tornaram do cativeiro edificavam o templo ao Senhor, Deus de Israel,

And adversaries of Judah and Benjamin hear that the sons of the captivity are building a temple to Jehovah, God of Israel,

2 c hegaram-se a Zorobabel e aos chefes das casas paternas, e disseram-lhes: Deixai-nos edificar convosco; pois, como vós, buscamos o vosso Deus; como também nós lhe temos sacrificado desde os dias de Esar-Hadom, rei da Assíria, que nos fez subir para aqui.

and they draw nigh unto Zerubbabel, and unto heads of the fathers, and say to them, `Let us build with you; for, like you, we seek to your God, and we are not sacrificing since the days of Esar-Haddon king of Asshur, who brought us up hither.'

3 R esponderam-lhes, porém, Zorobabel e Jesuá e os outros chefes das casas paternas de Israel: Não convém que vós e nós edifiquemos casa a nosso Deus: mas nós sozinhos a edificaremos ao Senhor, Deus de Israel, como nos ordenou o rei Ciro, rei da Pérsia.

And Zerubbabel saith to them, also Jeshua, and the rest of the heads of the fathers of Israel, `Not for you, and for us, to build a house to our God; but we ourselves together do build to Jehovah God of Israel, as the king Cyrus, king of Persia, commanded us.'

4 E ntão o povo da terra debilitava as mãos do povo de Judá, e os inquietava, impedindo-os de edificar;

And it cometh to pass, the people of the land are making the hands of the people of Judah feeble, and troubling them in building,

5 e assalariaram contra eles conselheiros para frustrarem o seu plano, por todos os dias de Ciro, rei da Pérsia, até o reinado de Dario, rei da Pérsia.

and are hiring against them counsellors to make void their counsel all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even till the reign of Darius king of Persia.

6 N o reinado de Assuero, no princípio do seu reino, escreveram uma acusação contra os habitantes de Judá e de Jerusalém.

And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the commencement of his reign, they have written an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem;

7 T ambém nos dias de Artaxerxes escreveram Bislão, Mitredate, Tabeel, e os companheiros destes, a Artaxerxes, rei da Pérsia; e a carta foi escrita em caracteres aramaicos, e traduzida na língua aramaica.

and in the days of Artaxerxes have Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of his companions written unto Artaxerxes king of Persia, and the writing of the letter is written in Aramaean, and interpreted in Aramaean.

8 R eum, o comandante, e Sinsai, o escrivão, escreveram uma carta contra Jerusalém, ao rei Artaxerxes, do teor seguinte,

Rehum counsellor, and Shimshai scribe have written a letter concerning Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king, thus:

9 i sto é, escreveram Reum, o comandante, Sinsai, o escrivão, e os seus companheiros, os juízes, os governadores, os oficiais, os persas, os homens de Ereque, os babilônios, os susanquitas, isto é, os elamitas,

Then Rehum counsellor, and Shimshai scribe, and the rest of their companions, Dinaites, and Apharsathchites, Tarpelites, Apharsites, Archevites, Babylonians, Susanchites, (who are Elamites),

10 e as demais nações que o grande e afamado Osnapar transportou, e que fez habitar na cidade de Samária e no restante da província dalém do Rio.

and the rest of the nations that the great and honourable Asnapper removed and set in the city of Samaria, and the rest beyond the river, and at such a time:

11 E is, pois, a cópia da carta que mandaram ao rei Artaxerxes: Teus servos, os homens de além do Rio, assim escrevem:

This a copy of a letter that they have sent unto him, unto Artaxerxes the king: `Thy servants, men beyond the river, and at such a time;

12 S aiba o rei que os judeus que subiram de ti a nós foram a Jerusalém e estão reedificando aquela rebelde e malvada cidade, e vão restaurando os seus muros e reparando os seus fundamentos.

Be it known to the king, that the Jews who have come up from thee unto us, have come in to Jerusalem, the rebellious and base city they are building, and the walls they have finished, and the foundations they join.

13 A gora saiba o rei que, se aquela cidade for reedificada e os muros forem restaurados, eles não pagarão nem tributo, nem imposto, nem pedágio; e assim se danificará a fazenda dos reis.

`Now, be it known to the king, that if this city be builded, and the walls finished, toll, tribute, and custom they do not give; and at length the kings it doth cause loss.

14 A gora, visto que comemos do sal do palácio, e não nos convém ver a desonra do rei, por isso mandamos dar aviso ao rei,

Now, because that the salt of the palace our salt, and the nakedness of the king we have no patience to see, therefore we have sent and made known to the king;

15 p ara que se busque no livro das crônicas de teus pais; e acharás no livro das crônicas e saberás que aquela é uma cidade rebelde, e danosa a reis e províncias, e que nela houve rebelião em tempos antigos; por isso é que ela foi destruída.

so that he doth seek in the book of the records of thy fathers, and thou dost find in the book of the records, and dost know, that this city a rebellious city, and causing loss kings and provinces, and makers of sedition in its midst from the days of old, therefore hath this city been wasted.

16 N ós, pois, estamos avisando ao rei que, se aquela cidade for reedificada e os seus muros forem restaurados, não terás porção alguma a oeste do Rio.

We are making known to the king that, if this city be builded and the walls finished, by this means a portion beyond the river thou hast none.'

17 E ntão o rei enviou esta resposta a Reum, o comandante, e a Sinsai, o escrivão, e aos demais seus companheiros, que habitavam em Samária e no restante do país a oeste do Rio: 'Paz.

An answer hath the king sent unto Rehum counsellor, and Shimshai scribe, and the rest of their companions who are dwelling in Samaria, and the rest beyond the river, `Peace, and at such a time:

18 A carta que nos enviastes foi claramente lida na minha presença.

The letter that ye sent unto us, explained, hath been read before me,

19 E , ordenando-o eu, buscaram e acharam que desde tempos antigos aquela cidade se tem levantado contra os reis, e que nela se tem feito rebelião e sedição.

and by me a decree hath been made, and they sought, and have found that this city from the days of old against kings is lifting up itself, and rebellion and sedition is made in it,

20 E tem havido reis poderosos sobre Jerusalém, os quais dominavam igualmente toda a província dalém do Rio; e a eles se pagavam tributos, impostos e pedágio.

and mighty kings have been over Jerusalem, even rulers over all beyond the river, and toll, tribute, and custom is given to them.

21 A gora, pois, dai ordem para que aqueles homens parem, a fim de que não seja edificada aquela cidade até que eu dê ordem.

`Now, make ye a decree to cause these men to cease, and this city is not builded, till by me a decree is made.

22 E guardai-vos de serdes remissos nisto; não suceda que o dano cresça em prejuízo dos reis.

And beware ye of negligence in doing this; why doth the hurt become great to the loss of the kings?'

23 E ntão, logo que a cópia da carta do rei Artaxerxes foi lida perante Reum e Sinsai, o escrivão, e seus companheiros, foram eles apressadamente a Jerusalém, aos judeus, e os impediram ã força e com violência.

Then from the time that a copy of the letter of king Artaxerxes is read before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they have gone in haste to Jerusalem, unto the Jews, and caused them to cease by force and strength;

24 E ntão cessou a obra da casa de Deus, que estava em Jerusalém, ficando interrompida até o segundo ano do reinado de Dario, rei da Pérsia.

then ceased the service of the house of God that in Jerusalem, and it ceased till the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.
