1 O Senhor Deus assim me fez ver: e eis que ele formava gafanhotos no princípio do rebentar da erva serôdia, e eis que era a erva serôdia depois da segada do rei.

Thus hath the Lord Jehovah shewed me, and lo, He is forming locusts at the beginning of the ascending of the latter growth, and lo, the latter growth after the mowings of the king;

2 E quando eles tinham comido completamente a erva da terra, eu disse: Senhor Deus, perdoa, peço-te; como subsistirá Jacó? pois ele é pequeno.

and it hath come to pass, when it hath finished to consume the herb of the land, that I say: `Lord Jehovah, forgive, I pray Thee, How doth Jacob arise -- for he small?'

3 E ntão o Senhor se arrependeu disso. Não acontecerá, disse o Senhor.

Jehovah hath repented of this, `It shall not be,' said Jehovah.

4 A ssim me mostrou o Senhor Deus: eis que o Senhor Deus ordenava que por meio do fogo se decidisse o pleito; o fogo, pois, consumiu o grande abismo, e também queria consumir a terra.

Thus hath the Lord Jehovah shewed me, and lo, the Lord Jehovah is calling to contend by fire, and it consumeth the great deep, yea, it hath consumed the portion, and I say:

5 E ntão eu disse: Senhor Deus, cessa agora; como subsistirá Jacó? pois ele é pequeno.

`Lord Jehovah, cease, I pray Thee, How doth Jacob arise -- for he small?'

6 T ambém disso se arrependeu o Senhor. Nem isso acontecerá, disse o Senhor Deus.

Jehovah hath repented of this, `It also shall not be,' said the Lord Jehovah.

7 M ostrou-me também assim: eis que o senhor estava junto a um muro levantado a prumo, e tinha um prumo na mão.

Thus hath He shewed me, and lo, the Lord is standing by a wall a plumb-line, and in His hand a plumb-line;

8 P erguntou-me o Senhor: Que vês tu, Amós? Respondi: Um prumo. Então disse o Senhor: Eis que eu porei o prumo no meio do meu povo Israel; nunca mais passarei por ele.

and Jehovah saith unto me, `What art thou seeing, Amos?' And I say, `A plumb-line;' and the Lord saith: `Lo, I am setting a plumb-line in the midst of My people Israel, I do not add any more to pass over to it.

9 M as os altos de Isaque serão assolados, e destruídos os santuários de Israel; e levantar-me-ei com a espada contra a casa de Jeroboão.

And desolated have been high places of Isaac, And sanctuaries of Israel are wasted, And I have risen against the house of Jeroboam with a sword.'

10 E ntão Amazias, o sacerdote de Betel, mandou dizer a Jeroboão, rei de Israel: Amós tem conspirado contra ti no meio da casa de Israel; a terra não poderá suportar tedas as suas palavras.

And Amaziah priest of Beth-El sendeth unto Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, `Amos hath conspired against thee in the midst of the house of Israel; the land is not able to bear all his words,

11 P ois assim diz Amós: Jeroboão morrerá ã espada, e Israel certamente será levado cativo para fora da sua terra.

for thus said Amos: By sword die doth Jeroboam, And Israel certainly removeth from off its land.'

12 D epois Amazias disse a Amós: Vai-te, ó vidente, foge para a terra de Judá, e ali come o pão, e ali profetiza;

And Amaziah saith unto Amos, `Seer, go flee for thee unto the land of Judah, and eat there bread, and there thou dost prophesy;

13 m as em Betel daqui por diante não profetizarás mais, porque é o santuário do rei, e é templo do reino.

and Beth-El do not add to prophesy any more, for it the king's sanctuary, and it the royal house.'

14 E respondeu Amós, e disse a Amazias: Eu não sou profeta, nem filho de profeta, mas boieiro, e cultivador de sicômoros.

And Amos answereth and saith unto Amaziah, `I no prophet, nor a prophet's son I, but a herdsman I, and a cultivator of sycamores,

15 M as o Senhor me tirou de após o gado, e o Senhor me disse: Vai, profetiza ao meu povo Israel.

and Jehovah taketh me from after the flock, and Jehovah saith unto me, Go, prophesy unto My people Israel.

16 A gora, pois, ouve a palavra do Senhor: Tu dizes: Não profetizes contra Israel, nem fales contra a casa de Isaque.

And now, hear a word of Jehovah: thou art saying, Do not prophesy against Israel, nor drop against the house of Isaac,

17 P ortanto assim diz o Senhor: Tua mulher se prostituirá na cidade, e teus filhos e tuas filhas cairão ã espada, e a tua terra será repartida a cordel; e tu morrerás numa terra imunda, e Israel certamente será levado cativo para fora da sua terra.

therefore thus said Jehovah: Thy wife in the city doth go a-whoring, And thy sons and thy daughters by sword do fall, And thy land by line is apportioned, And thou on an unclean land diest, And Israel certainly removeth from off its land.'
