1 D omnul Dumnezeu mi -a trimes vedenia aceasta. Iată, făcea nişte lăcuste, în clipa cînd începea să crească otava; era otava după cositul împăratului.

Thus hath the Lord Jehovah shewed me, and lo, He is forming locusts at the beginning of the ascending of the latter growth, and lo, the latter growth after the mowings of the king;

2 Ş i după ce au mîncat ele cu desăvîrşire toată iarba din ţară, am zis:,, Doamne Dumnezeule, iartă! Cum ar putea să stea Iacov în picioare? Căci este aşa de slab!``

and it hath come to pass, when it hath finished to consume the herb of the land, that I say: `Lord Jehovah, forgive, I pray Thee, How doth Jacob arise -- for he small?'

3 A tunci Domnul S'a căit de lucrul acesta:,, Nu se va întîmpla una ca aceasta, a zis Domnul.``

Jehovah hath repented of this, `It shall not be,' said Jehovah.

4 D omnul Dumnezeu mi -a trimes vedenia aceasta: Iată, Domnul Dumnezeu vestea pedeapsa prin foc; şi focul mînca Adîncul cel mare şi apucase şi cîmpia.

Thus hath the Lord Jehovah shewed me, and lo, the Lord Jehovah is calling to contend by fire, and it consumeth the great deep, yea, it hath consumed the portion, and I say:

5 E u am zis:,, Doamne Dumnezeule, opreşte! Cum ar putea să stea în picioare Iacov? Căci este aşa de slab!``

`Lord Jehovah, cease, I pray Thee, How doth Jacob arise -- for he small?'

6 A tunci Domnul S'a căit şi de lucrul acesta.,, Nici una ca aceasta nu se va întîmpla, a zis Domnul Dumnezeu.``

Jehovah hath repented of this, `It also shall not be,' said the Lord Jehovah.

7 E l mi -a trimes vedenia aceasta: Iată, Domnul stătea pe un zid făcut la cumpănă, şi avea o cumpănă în mînă.

Thus hath He shewed me, and lo, the Lord is standing by a wall a plumb-line, and in His hand a plumb-line;

8 D omnul mi -a zis:,, Ce vezi, Amos?`` Eu am răspuns:,, O cumpănă.`` Şi Domnul a zis:,, Iată, voi pune cumpăna în mijlocul poporului Meu Israel, şi nu -l voi mai ierta;

and Jehovah saith unto me, `What art thou seeing, Amos?' And I say, `A plumb-line;' and the Lord saith: `Lo, I am setting a plumb-line in the midst of My people Israel, I do not add any more to pass over to it.

9 c i înălţimile lui Isaac vor fi pustiite; sfintele locaşuri ale lui Israel vor fi dărîmate, şi Mă voi ridica împotriva casei lui Ieroboam cu sabia.``

And desolated have been high places of Isaac, And sanctuaries of Israel are wasted, And I have risen against the house of Jeroboam with a sword.'

10 A tunci Amaţia, preotul din Betel, a trimes să spună lui Ieroboam, împăratul lui Israel:,, Amos unelteşte împotriva ta în mijlocul casei lui Israel; ţara nu poate să sufere toate cuvintele lui!

And Amaziah priest of Beth-El sendeth unto Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, `Amos hath conspired against thee in the midst of the house of Israel; the land is not able to bear all his words,

11 C ăci iată ce zice Amos:, Ieroboam va fi ucis de sabie, şi Israel va fi dus în robie departe de ţara sa!`.``

for thus said Amos: By sword die doth Jeroboam, And Israel certainly removeth from off its land.'

12 Ş i Amaţia a zis lui Amos:,, Pleacă, văzătorule, şi fugi în ţara lui Iuda! Mănîncă-ţi pînea acolo, şi acolo prooroceşte.

And Amaziah saith unto Amos, `Seer, go flee for thee unto the land of Judah, and eat there bread, and there thou dost prophesy;

13 D ar nu mai prooroci la Betel, căci este un locaş sfînt al împăratului, şi este un templu al împărăţiei!``

and Beth-El do not add to prophesy any more, for it the king's sanctuary, and it the royal house.'

14 A mos a răspuns lui Amaţia:,, Eu nu sînt nici prooroc, nici fiu de prooroc; ci sînt păstor, şi strîngător de smochine de Egipt.

And Amos answereth and saith unto Amaziah, `I no prophet, nor a prophet's son I, but a herdsman I, and a cultivator of sycamores,

15 D ar Domnul m'a luat dela oi, şi Domnul mi -a zis:, Du-te şi prooroceşte poporului Meu Israel!`

and Jehovah taketh me from after the flock, and Jehovah saith unto me, Go, prophesy unto My people Israel.

16 A scultă acum Cuvîntul Domnului, tu care zici:, Nu prooroci împotriva lui Israel, nu vorbi împotriva casei lui Isaac!`

And now, hear a word of Jehovah: thou art saying, Do not prophesy against Israel, nor drop against the house of Isaac,

17 D in pricina aceasta, iată ce zice Domnul:, Nevastă-ta va curvi în cetate, fiii şi fiicele tale vor cădea loviţi de sabie, ogorul tău va fi împărţit cu frînghia de măsurat; tu însă vei muri într'un pămînt necurat, şi Israel va fi dus în robie departe de ţara lui!``

therefore thus said Jehovah: Thy wife in the city doth go a-whoring, And thy sons and thy daughters by sword do fall, And thy land by line is apportioned, And thou on an unclean land diest, And Israel certainly removeth from off its land.'
