1 A hab a spus Izabelei tot ce făcuse Ilie, şi cum ucisese cu sabia pe toţi proorocii.

And Ahab declareth to Jezebel all that Elijah did, and all how he slew all the prophets by the sword,

2 I zabela a trimes un sol la Ilie, să -i spună:,, Să mă pedepsească zeii cu toată asprimea lor, dacă mîne, la ceasul acesta, nu voi face cu viaţa ta ce ai făcut tu cu viaţa fiecăruia din ei.``

and Jezebel sendeth a messenger unto Elijah, saying, `Thus doth the gods, and thus do they add, surely about this time to-morrow, I make thy life as the life of one of them.'

3 I lie, cînd a văzut lucrul acesta, s'a sculat şi a plecat, ca să-şi scape viaţa. A ajuns la Beer-Şeba, care ţine de Iuda, şi şi -a lăsat slujitorul acolo.

And he feareth, and riseth, and goeth for his life, and cometh in to Beer-Sheba, that Judah's, and leaveth his young man there,

4 E l s'a dus în pustie unde, după un drum de o zi, a şezut subt un ienuper, şi dorea să moară, zicînd:,, Destul! Acum, Doamne, ia-mi sufletul, căci nu sînt mai bun decît părinţii mei.``

and he himself hath gone into the wilderness a day's Journey, and cometh and sitteth under a certain retem-tree, and desireth his soul to die, and saith, `Enough, now, O Jehovah, take my soul, for I not better than my fathers.'

5 S 'a culcat şi a adormit subt un ienuper. Şi iată, l -a atins un înger şi i -a zis:,, Scoală-te şi mănîncă.``

And he lieth down and sleepeth under a certain retem-tree, and lo, a messenger cometh against him, and saith to him, `Rise, eat;'

6 E l s'a uitat, şi la căpătîiul lui era o turtă coaptă pe nişte pietre încălzite şi un ulcior cu apă. A mîncat şi a băut, apoi s'a culcat din nou.

and he looketh attentively, and lo, at his bolster a cake burning stones, and a dish of water, and he eateth, and drinketh, and turneth, and lieth down.

7 Î ngerul Domnului a venit a doua oară, l -a atins, şi a zis:,, Scoală-te şi mănîncă, fiindcă drumul pe care -l ai de făcut este prea lung pentru tine.``

And the messenger of Jehovah turneth back a second time, and cometh against him, and saith, `Rise, eat, for the way is too great for thee;'

8 E l s'a sculat, a mîncat şi a băut; şi, cu puterea pe care i -a dat -o mîncarea aceasta, a mers patruzeci de zile şi patruzeci de nopţi pînă la muntele lui Dumnezeu, Horeb.

and he riseth, and eateth, and drinketh, and goeth in the power of that food forty days and forty nights, unto the mount of God -- Horeb.

9 Ş i acolo, Ilie a intrat într'o peşteră, şi a rămas în ea peste noapte. Şi cuvîntul Domnului i -a vorbit astfel:,, Ce faci tu aici, Ilie?``

And he cometh in there, unto the cave, and lodgeth there, and lo, the word of Jehovah unto him, and saith to him, `What -- to thee, here, Elijah?'

10 E l a răspuns:,, Am fost plin de rîvnă pentru Domnul, Dumnezeul oştirilor; căci copiii lui Israel au părăsit legămîntul Tău, au sfărîmat altarele Tale, şi au ucis cu sabia pe proorocii Tăi; am rămas numai eu singur, şi caută să-mi ia viaţa!``

And he saith, `I have been very zealous for Jehovah, God of Hosts, for the sons of Israel have forsaken Thy covenant -- Thine altars they have thrown down, and Thy prophets they have slain by the sword, and I am left, I, by myself, and they seek my life -- to take it.'

11 D omnul i -a zis:,, Ieşi, şi stai pe munte înaintea Domnului!`` Şi iată că Domnul a trecut pe lîngă peşteră. Şi înaintea Domnului a trecut un vînt tare şi puternic, care despica munţii şi sfărîma stîncile. Domnul nu era în vîntul acela. Şi după vînt, a venit un cutremur de pămînt. Domnul nu era în cutremurul de pămînt.

And He saith, `Go out, and thou hast stood in the mount before Jehovah.' And lo, Jehovah is passing by, and a wind -- great and strong -- is rending mountains, and shivering rocks before Jehovah: -- not in the wind Jehovah; and after the wind a shaking: -- not in the shaking Jehovah;

12 Ş i după cutremurul de pămînt, a venit un foc: Domnul nu era în focul acela. Şi după foc, a venit un susur blînd şi supţire.

and after the shaking a fire: -- not in the fire Jehovah; and after the fire a voice still small;

13 C înd l -a auzit Ilie, şi -a acoperit faţa cu mantaua, a ieşit şi a stătut la gura peşterii.

and it cometh to pass, at Elijah's hearing, that he wrappeth his face in his robe, and goeth out, and standeth at the opening of the cave, and lo, unto him a voice, and it saith, `What -- to thee, here, Elijah?'

14 E l a răspuns:,, Am fost plin de rîvnă pentru Domnul, Dumnezeul oştirilor; căci copiii lui Israel au părăsit legămîntul Tău, au sfărîmat altarele Tale, şi au ucis cu sabia pe proorocii Tăi; am rămas numai eu singur, şi caută să-mi ia viaţa.``

And he saith, `I have been very zealous for Jehovah, God of Hosts; for the sons of Israel have forsaken Thy covenant, Thine altars they have thrown down, and Thy prophets they have slain by the sword, and I am left, I, by myself, and they seek my life -- to take it.'

15 D omnul i -a zis:,, Du-te, întoarce-te pe drumul tău prin pustie pînă la Damasc; şi cînd vei ajunge, să ungi pe Hazael ca împărat al Siriei.

And Jehovah saith unto him, `Go turn back on thy way to the wilderness of Damascus, and thou hast gone in, and anointed Hazael for king over Aram,

16 S ă ungi şi pe Iehu, fiul lui Nimşi, ca împărat al lui Israel; şi să ungi pe Elisei, fiul lui Şafat, din Abel-Mehola, ca prooroc în locul tău.

and Jehu son of Nimshi thou dost anoint for king over Israel, and Elisha son of Shaphat, of Abel-Meholah, thou dost anoint for prophet in thy stead.

17 Ş i se va întîmpla că pe cel ce va scăpa de sabia lui Hazael îl va omorî Iehu; şi pe cel ce va scăpa de sabia lui Iehu, îl va omorî Elisei.

`And it hath been, him who is escaped from the sword of Hazael, put to death doth Jehu, and him who is escaped from the sword of Jehu put to death doth Elisha;

18 D ar voi lăsa în Israel şapte mii de bărbaţi, şi anume pe toţi cei ce nu şi-au plecat genunchii înaintea lui Baal, şi a căror gură nu l-au sărutat.``

and I have left in Israel seven thousand, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that hath not kissed him.'

19 I lie a plecat de acolo, şi a găsit pe Elisei, fiul lui Şafat, arînd. Înaintea lui erau douăsprezece perechi de boi, şi el era cu a douăsprezecea. Ilie s'a apropiat de el, şi şi -a aruncat mantaua pe el.

And he goeth thence, and findeth Elisha son of Shaphat, and he is plowing; twelve yoke before him, and he with the twelfth; and Elijah passeth over unto him, and casteth his robe upon him,

20 E lisei a părăsit boii, a alergat după Ilie, şi a zis:,, Lasă-mă să sărut pe tatăl meu şi pe mama mea, şi te voi urma.`` Ilie i -a răspuns:,, Du-te, şi apoi întoarce-te: dar gîndeşte-te la ce ţi-am făcut.``

and he forsaketh the oxen, and runneth after Elijah, and saith, `Let me give a kiss, I pray thee, to my father and to my mother, and I go after thee.' And he saith to him, `Go, turn back, for what have I done to thee?'

21 D upă ce s'a depărtat de Ilie, s'a întors şi a luat o păreche de boi pe cari i -a adus jertfă; cu uneltele boilor le -a fiert carnea, şi a dat -o oamenilor s'o mănînce. Apoi s'a sculat, a urmat pe Ilie, şi a fost în slujba lui.

And he turneth back from after him, and taketh the yoke of oxen, and sacrificeth it, and with instruments of the oxen he hath boiled their flesh, and giveth to the people, and they eat, and he riseth, and goeth after Elijah, and serveth him.
