1 C el ursuz caută ce -i place lui, se supără de orice lucru bun. -

For desire he who is separated doth seek, With all wisdom he intermeddleth.

2 N ebunului nu -i este de învăţătură, ci vrea să arate ce ştie el. -

A fool delighteth not in understanding, But -- in uncovering his heart.

3 C înd vine cel rău, vine şi dispreţul; şi odată cu ruşinea, vine şi ocara. -

With the coming of the wicked come also hath contempt, And with shame -- reproach.

4 C uvintele gurii unui om sînt ca nişte ape adînci; izvorul înţelepciunii este ca un şivoi care curge într'una. -

Deep waters the words of a man's mouth, The fountain of wisdom a flowing brook.

5 N u este bine să ai în vedere faţa celui rău, ca să nedreptăţeşti pe cel neprihănit la judecată. -

Acceptance of the face of the wicked not good, To turn aside the righteous in judgment.

6 V orbele nebunului aduc ceartă, şi gura lui înjură pînă stîrneşte lovituri. -

The lips of a fool enter into strife, And his mouth for stripes calleth.

7 G ura nebunului îi aduce pieirea, şi buzele îi sînt o cursă pentru suflet. -

The mouth of a fool ruin to him, And his lips the snare of his soul.

8 C uvintele bîrfitorului sînt ca prăjiturile: alunecă pînă în fundul măruntaielor. -

The words of a tale-bearer as self-inflicted wounds, And they have gone down the inner parts of the heart.

9 C ine se leneveşte în lucrul lui este frate cu cel ce nimiceşte. -

He also that is remiss in his work, A brother he to a destroyer.

10 N umele Domnului este un turn tare; cel neprihănit fuge în el, şi stă la adăpost. -

A tower of strength the name of Jehovah, Into it the righteous runneth, and is set on high.

11 A verea este o cetate întărită pentru cel bogat; în închipuirea lui, ea este un zid înalt. -

The wealth of the rich the city of his strength, And as a wall set on high in his own imagination.

12 Î nainte de pieire, inima omului se îngîmfă, dar smerenia merge înaintea slavei. -

Before destruction the heart of man is high, And before honour humility.

13 C ine răspunde fără să fi ascultat, face o prostie şi îşi trage ruşinea. -

Whoso is answering a matter before he heareth, Folly it is to him and shame.

14 D uhul omului îl sprijineşte la boală; dar duhul doborît de întristare, cine -l va ridica? -

The spirit of a man sustaineth his sickness, And a smitten spirit who doth bear?

15 O inimă pricepută dobîndeşte ştiinţa, şi urechea celor înţelepţi caută ştiinţa. -

The heart of the intelligent getteth knowledge, And the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge.

16 D arurile unui om îi fac loc, şi -i deschid intrarea înaintea celor mari. -

The gift of a man maketh room for him, And before the great it leadeth him.

17 C el care vorbeşte întîi în pricina lui, pare că are dreptate, dar vine celalt, şi -l ia la cercetare. -

Righteous the first in his own cause, His neighbour cometh and hath searched him.

18 S orţul pune capăt neînţelegerilor, şi hotărăşte între cei puternici. -

The lot causeth contentions to cease, And between the mighty it separateth.

19 F raţii nedreptăţiţi sînt mai greu de cîştigat decît o cetate întărită, şi certurile lor sînt tot aşa de greu de înlăturat ca zăvoarele unei case împărăteşti. -

A brother transgressed against is as a strong city, And contentions as the bar of a palace.

20 D in rodul gurii lui îşi satură omul trupul, din venitul buzelor lui se satură. -

From the fruit of a man's mouth is his belly satisfied, increase of his lips he is satisfied.

21 M oartea şi viaţa sînt în puterea limbii; oricine o iubeşte, îi va mînca roadele. -

Death and life in the power of the tongue, And those loving it eat its fruit.

22 C ine găseşte o nevastă bună, găseşte fericirea; este un har pe care -l capătă dela Domnul. -

hath found a wife hath found good, And bringeth out good-will from Jehovah.

23 S ăracul vorbeşte rugîndu-se, dar bogatul răspunde cu asprime. -

supplications doth the poor speak, And the rich answereth fierce things.

24 C ine îşi face mulţi prieteni, îi face spre nenorocirea lui, dar este un prieten care ţine mai mult la tine decît un frate. -

A man with friends to show himself friendly, And there is a lover adhering more than a brother!
