1 S inguraticul caută ce-i place lui însuşi; el sfidează orice înţelepciune.

3 C ând vine cel rău, vine şi dispreţul şi o dată cu ruşinea, vine şi ocara.

With the coming of the wicked come also hath contempt, And with shame -- reproach.

4 C uvintele gurii unui om sunt ca nişte ape adânci; izvorul înţelepciunii este ca un pârâu curgător.

Deep waters the words of a man's mouth, The fountain of wisdom a flowing brook.

5 N u este bine să fii părtinitor cu cel rău, sau să nedreptăţeşti pe cel nevinovat la judecată.

Acceptance of the face of the wicked not good, To turn aside the righteous in judgment.

6 B uzele prostului aduc ceartă şi gura lui cere lovituri.

The lips of a fool enter into strife, And his mouth for stripes calleth.

7 G ura celui prost îi aduce ruina şi buzele lui sunt o cursă pentru sufletul lui.

The mouth of a fool ruin to him, And his lips the snare of his soul.

8 C uvintele bârfitorului sunt ca nişte prăjituri; ele alunecă până în adâncul stomacului.

The words of a tale-bearer as self-inflicted wounds, And they have gone down the inner parts of the heart.

9 C ine este leneş în lucrul lui este confrate cu cel ce distruge.

He also that is remiss in his work, A brother he to a destroyer.

10 N umele Domnului este un turn tare; cel drept fuge în el şi este protejat.

A tower of strength the name of Jehovah, Into it the righteous runneth, and is set on high.

11 A verea este o cetate întărită pentru cel bogat; şi-o închipuie ca pe un zid înalt.

The wealth of the rich the city of his strength, And as a wall set on high in his own imagination.

12 Î nainte de pieire omul se îngâmfă, dar smerenia merge înaintea gloriei.

Before destruction the heart of man is high, And before honour humility.

13 C ine răspunde fără să fi ascultat face o prostie şi îşi atrage ruşinea.

Whoso is answering a matter before he heareth, Folly it is to him and shame.

14 D uhul omului îl încurajează când este bolnav, dar cine poate sprijini un duh zdrobit?

The spirit of a man sustaineth his sickness, And a smitten spirit who doth bear?

15 M intea celor cu discernământ dobândeşte cunoştinţă şi urechea celor înţelepţi caută învăţătură.

The heart of the intelligent getteth knowledge, And the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge.

16 U n dar deschide uşi celui ce îl oferă şi-l duce înaintea celor mari.

The gift of a man maketh room for him, And before the great it leadeth him.

17 P rimul care-şi apără cauza pare că are dreptate, până vine altul şi-i pune întrebări.

Righteous the first in his own cause, His neighbour cometh and hath searched him.

18 A runcarea sorţului pune capăt neînţelegerilor şi decide între cei puternici.

The lot causeth contentions to cease, And between the mighty it separateth.

19 U n frate nedreptăţit este mai greu de câştigat decât o cetate întărită şi neînţelegerile sunt ca porţile închise ale unei cetăţi.

A brother transgressed against is as a strong city, And contentions as the bar of a palace.

20 D in rodul gurii lui omul îşi satură fiinţa şi din venitul buzelor lui se satură.

From the fruit of a man's mouth is his belly satisfied, increase of his lips he is satisfied.

21 V iaţa şi moartea stau în puterea limbii, iar cei ce o iubesc îi vor mânca roadele.

Death and life in the power of the tongue, And those loving it eat its fruit.

22 C el ce-şi găseşte o soţie găseşte ce este bine şi primeşte astfel o favoare de la Domnul.

hath found a wife hath found good, And bringeth out good-will from Jehovah.

23 S ăracul vorbeşte implorând milă, dar bogatul răspunde cu asprime.

supplications doth the poor speak, And the rich answereth fierce things.

24 C ine are mulţi prieteni poate ajunge la ruină, dar există un amic care ţine la tine mai mult decât un frate.

A man with friends to show himself friendly, And there is a lover adhering more than a brother!
